2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 103 complaints across the 8 model-year 2022 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2022 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel, 7.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

These trucks introduced the 10-speed automatic (10R140) and the 7.3L V8 gas engine ("Godzilla"). The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas carried over.

We counted 949 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2022 F-250s and F-350s: 633 from diesel trucks, 210 from 7.3L gas trucks and 90 from 6.2L gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem: harsh or delayed shifts, and on early diesels, recalls for parts that can fail.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4) on diesels was recalled (24S78).
  • Front-end shake is reported far less than on 2017–2019 trucks (7% of complaints vs. more than half).
  • Several recalls cover the steering column, driveshafts, rear axles and cameras.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems are the top topic: 90 diesel complaints (14%) and 48 7.3L complaints (23%). Owners describe harsh or clunky shifts, delays going into gear after the truck sits, and in some cases transmission replacement under warranty.

Recalls on 2020 diesels:

  • A washer inside the transmission can break apart and stop the truck from holding Park (recall 22V256000).
  • A brittle torque converter part can cause stalling (recall 20V365000).

When buying: let the truck sit, then shift into Drive and Reverse and note any long delay or hard clunk. On the test drive, watch for harsh or hunting shifts. Ask for transmission service and warranty records.

Diesel fuel pump (CP4) recall

Ford recalled 2020–2022 6.7L trucks because deposits from aged biodiesel can make the high-pressure fuel pump fail, causing power loss or stalling (recall 24V957000, Ford number 24S78). The fix is a software update, and Ford issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (recall 26V158000). Fuel pump problems come up in 94 diesel complaints.

When buying: confirm both recalls show as completed for the VIN.

7.3L gas

Most owners are happy with the 7.3L. Transmission complaints lead, and a smaller number of owners report valvetrain (lifter or camshaft) failures. Listen for ticking at idle.

Other recalls to check

  • Steering column upper shaft may come apart on 2020–2021 trucks (recall 25V626000)
  • Driveshaft damage on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
  • Rear axle housing on 2020–2021 F-350 diesels with Dana 275 axles (recall 21V536000)
  • Fuel filter cap leak on 2021 diesels (recall 22V013000)
  • Several rear and 360-degree camera recalls

The contact owns a 2022 Ford F-250 SD. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds over a speed bump and raising the foot off the accelerator pedal, the engine continued to rev for an additional four seconds after releasing the accelerator pedal. Additionally, while pulling into the traffic and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to immediately accelerate as intended. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer on several occasions due to the failures and the throttle body and PCM was updated but the failures persisted. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 3,511.

I was driving from [XXX] back to [XXX] on I-5. I was at 70mph when a slower vehicle merged into my lane and I got on the gas to pass them. The transmission locked into 10th gear and never downshifted, the engine revved, and then I lost complete power of the transmission for several seconds. I went from 70 to 55 and then it jerked back into gear. I had my 2 small kids in the back seat and wife in the truck. This happened to me with my 2020 F-150 when my wife was pregnant and then eventually got worse and worse. My transmission shifts hard when put in gear and most times will lurch forward. It bogs down in 4th gear a lot and lately all the way through 6th gear. Doesn't happen all the time but enough to worry whether its safe to keep driving with my family in it (only vehicle in the family). Subject: Safety Recall 24V-957 – Loss of Power Risk – Dealer Mishandling I am filing a complaint regarding Ford recall 24V-957 (Ford reference 24S78) for my vehicle. The recall states the defect can cause: “Loss of driving power, increasing the risk of a crash” “Engine stall” “Loss of motive power while driving” My vehicle has shown symptoms consistent with these safety risks. When I brought the vehicle to the dealership: 1. They claimed fuel contamination but provided a fuel sample with a Dec 3 timestamp, even though they originally claimed the issue was discovered on Nov 26, raising chain-of-custody concerns. 2. They have refused to properly address the recall or escalate the matter. 3. They threatened to report my rental car as stolen, even though I have not refused to return it and the vehicle is still under an unresolved recall safety issue. 4. Ford Customer Care refuses to intervene and instructs me to deal only with the dealership, despite this being a manufacturer safety recall. This situation has left me without clear direction, without safe transportation, and with concerns about dealership misconduct and improper handling of a safety-critical recall. I am requesting NHTSA review this recall handling and ensure Ford properly manages recall repairs, towing, rental support, and dealer oversight.

October 2024 (while out of state vacation): The transmission violently downshifted upon moderate acceleration such that truck lurched with a loud bang, went into limp safe mode in traffic, with no rear warning because brakes were not applied. I was able to shut the vehicle off and restart, and able to engage the transmission, though engagement remained harsh. No Check Engine Lights were illuminated. Upon return home, I got the truck to local dealer service center. They had the truck for a week and said they could not determine a cause or problem...no scanner codes recorded? Their tech could not duplicate. From October 2024 until June 2025, this same behavior occurred 2-4 times, all without CELs. June 2025: Truck taken to local dealership with symptom list, only now occurring more frequently. At my insistence, I asked the dealer to involve Ford Engineering, to diagnose, and to compel Ford to honor the active full warranty still in place. This unresolved issue began October 2024. The dealer had the truck for over a month, and said he could not proceed further in diagnosing unless Ford authorized warranty payment for labor and parts. No progress was made, and it was told to me I HAVE TO CONTACT FORD and push, because the dealer is an independent shop, not Ford proper. I took the truck away and drove, to allow possible worsening, or some other code to be recorded or CELs to show. October 2025: Truck violentlt downshifted without acceleration or deceleration from 35 mph to almost )mph, skidding and fishtailing, going into limp mode, and I was almost rear ended by following traffic...since brakes were not activated to cause this. Truck went immediately into limp mode, and would not now engage PARK. I turned it off, restarted, and transmission would hardly go into DRIVE. I limped home, and vowed I will not drive it again until repaired! No CELs illuminated. The truck was towed to the dealer at my cost, and has been there over 2.5 weeks as of 11/8/25. Ford denies help.

10 day roundtrip from [XXX] to [XXX]. 5 incidents of catastrophic engine failure on interstates. Truck started to jerk, sputter, lost power at an alarming rate. No engine light until failure ocurred. Very dangerous with heavy holiday traffic. Lives were in danger, us and other vehicles around us. No one expects travel to go from 70 mph,to 50, 30, 15 in such a short period of time. Pulled over to "investigate" code failures we deemed as o2 sensors. Afterwards the truck started back up, no engine lights and drove as normal. Started using premium gasoline, hoping it would help. Vehicle: 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty Component: Door latch / door ajar sensor system This complaint concerns a latent manufacturing defect involving the door latch / door ajar sensor system on a 2022 Ford F-250. The defect causes the vehicle to falsely indicate that doors are open when they are fully closed, triggering alarms and safety warnings and impairing normal vehicle operation. This failure was detectable during the warranty period and manifested shortly after expiration of the bumper-to-bumper warranty, consistent with a latent defect rather than wear or maintenance. The same defect has occurred on multiple Ford vehicles purchased by the same family, including an identical repair performed on another Ford truck for the same door latch sensor failure. This demonstrates a patterned manufacturing issue, not an isolated incident. Numerous owner reports document this same failure mode on 2022 Ford F-250 vehicles, frequently occurring immediately following warranty expiration. The dealership declined to classify the failure as a defect and limited review to warranty dates only, refusing to provide a written determination or pursue goodwill consideration. Because this defect affects vehicle security systems and driver safety alerts, it warrants investigation as a systemic manufacturing defect. The dealership has also failed to repair recalls on the vehicle due to part shipment delays per their service team.

The backup camera failed. Vehicle had a 1 year customer satisfaction program and Ford would not repair this because it failed outside the 1 year window. Now, they came out with a 15 year one time fix, but Ford does not have a remedy. This is a safety issue and should be a recall (just like it is on our 2 Ford Mavericks)! The camera was also hanging up and not allowing the sync system to shut off which was consistently draining our battery. Had our sync system updated at local mechanics shop and camera/sync started working again for a couple of weeks and its back to blue or black screen saying “camera unavailable contact dealership.” My dealership said no remedy available until Feb 2027. The vehicle also states “check your surroundings” but you can’t because it doesn’t work. This at a minimum should be a recall as it is a safety issue and it is on other Ford vehicles.

I am writing to report a potential safety defect on my 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty. Since purchasing the vehicle new, the hole in the towing receiver where the pin inserts has ovaled out while towing. On a recent drive, this caused the hitch pin to shift, knocking out the cotter pin that secures it. This created a dangerous situation where the trailer could have disconnected. I contacted the dealership, Ford Country at 280 N Gibson Rd Henderson nv 89014 but they stated this is not covered under warranty. My Vehicle is still under the 3yr 36k warranty and i have the extended 6yr coverage. I believe this is a manufacturing or design defect that could affect other F-250 owners who tow. Please investigate this issue for the safety of all drivers on the road. Thank you,

An engine failure while traveling at highway speeds could be a disastrous to occupants and others around them. This appears to be a common problem with the 7.3l engine. The check engine light illuminated after i noticed the ticking noise.

Hello,  I am reporting a safety issue involving my Ford F250 vehicle related to Safety Recall 25S75 (low-pressure fuel pump failure). Approximately one month ago, while driving on the freeway at approximately 65 mph, my vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power. This created a dangerous situation as I was traveling at highway speed and the vehicle became unable to maintain normal operation. The vehicle is now inoperable. The failure is consistent with the condition described in Recall 25S75. This is not a preventative concern — the defect has already occurred and has rendered the vehicle undrivable. I contacted Ford Customer Relations and explained that the failure matches the recall condition. However, my case was closed without resolution, without any determination of responsibility, and without conducting a repair or transportation support. Ford has indicated that the official recall remedy is not yet available. Despite this, I have been told I may be responsible for out-of-pocket repair costs, even though the failure is consistent with an active safety recall.  This situation presents both a safety concern and an unreasonable financial burden, as the vehicle cannot be safely operated and no interim remedy or support has been provided. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter, as the manufacturer is not addressing a recall-related failure that has already occurred and resulted in a loss of power at highway speed. If you need any additional details, please do not hesitate to reach out.  Thanks, [XXX]   INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

      1. Fuel Pump failure occurred September 4th 2025 2. While towing a travel trailer from Raleigh NC to Surf City NC. When the truck stalled we lost all power and power steering and there was no clear path to pull off the single lane road with no shoulder. With a line of vehicle's behind us, including tractor trailers this created very serious safety situation not only for us but other travelers heading toward us and behind us. We were fortunate that the tractor trailer behind us was alert. I was able to restart the vehicle and drive to a safe location. We left the travel trailer at the coast, and returned vehicle to Capital Ford on or about September 9th. So yes, our safety and the safety of other was in serious risk. 3. No the problem has not been reproduced. 4. Yes the dealer, Capital Ford, Inc of Raleigh, NC has inspected and confirmed root cause to be fuel pump recall. 5. As I recall the truck hesitated, check engine light came on, and truck stalled ( unsure if light came on before or after stall) in a very short period of time. I do not recall the exact amount of time but I do recall the hesitation, I told my wife something is not right, engine stalled and we lost all power. Currently it has been 8 months since notification and, for the safety of the driver and other on the road, we have been unable to use vehicle for reason purchased since the incident.

The drivers door power door lock fails to operate either to unlock the vehicle or to lock it. This is a safety risk as the power door lock should automatically lock the door once the vehicle reaches a certain speed to help doors remain shut in roll over accidents. Automatically locking the door also provides some security to occupants for carjacking. This problem first started when the door lock actuator failed to work in freezing weather at approximately 19,000 miles. The dealer was unwilling to repair it under warranty do to not being able to duplicate the condition despite video evidence. The problem has progressed to where it now no longer functions at all. With ambient outdoor temperatures below freezing the front right drivers door latch/lock is frozen and not operable during at least the last 5 days. Also, the manual locking mechanism is unable to be pulled to unlocked at it sits flush with the top of door panel leaving the door not operable. It is clearly frozen as the latch/lock starts working after the truck is allowed to warmup after significant run time (usually more than 30 minutes). ***NHTSA something needs to be done with these latches. I previously owned a 2017 Ford F-250 that experienced the same freezing lock/latch issues. Ford supposedly revised the installation and some minor parts for these locks/latches. I cannot fathom how has been allowed to continue and no recall has been issued. DOOR LATCHES KEEP DOORS CLOSED, UNDER THE RIGHT CONDITIONS THE 2017 SUPER DUTY I HAD WOULD NOT ALLOW THE DOORS TO LATCH CLOSED. I fear this will be the same on this truck.

The 5th wheel trailer has been in the shop 3 different times trying to find a problem with the trailer but have not found any braking problems since they pulled the trailer with another truck and had no braking issues. Ford dealers have seen the vehicle twice now and say they plugged in an instrument and do not see any problems. Ford had a recall for F-150 Trailer brake controller but not for the F-250 back in April of 2022. It seems to be a possible software problem. I have to pull a trailer but I am afraid it will cause an accident. Any suggestions on what to do next.

Nothing hit this roof. The roof simply exploded. It caused me to swerve and almost hit the car next to me and cars behind me were swerving to avoid glass pellets that were blowing off the top of the truck. My wife and I both experienced superficial cuts to our fingers and my wife cut her toe cleaning up the glass. This is a safety issue in every way. Ford refused to stand behind the repair and I was forced to pay for the repair.

Mileage: approx 4005mi Tire pressures: 78 psi TPMS tire temperatures: 84 F and 102 F immediately before failures. Speed: 50 MPH No impact with road hazards, winds were calm, terrain was flat paved road. Failures were on separate axles. The Trailer was weighted on a certified CAT scale and was not overloaded. The remaining tires were replaced out of safety concern after blown tires and camper were inspected by an independent mechanic who found no defects or concerns with the camper but reported the tires "clearly failed from the inside." Camper VIN: [XXX] Trailer type: ZT32QB13 GVWR: 9750 Each axle has a 5000# capacity, Camper weight on the CAT scale was 8400# the same day as the blow out. The first blow out occurred XXX @ 2:41PM while driving 50-55mph on a flat road, I heard a loud explosion, my TPMS alarmed, I immediately slowed, pulled over, and changed the tire. The remainder of the trip was 23 miles; I did not exceed 30 MPH or make aggressive maneuvers. I backed it into the camp site. The second blow out Occurred Sunday XXX @ 12:00 PM. Tire pressures as we departed the campground were 72 cold. My husband was driving; I was following immediately behind him. Doing 45-50 on a flat road after a slight downhill, there was what appeared to be a flashing or vibration from the Drivers front tire, which I was watching to see if it was just road lines, or sun glare, it just didn't look right. There was a sudden explosion again and the drivers front axle tire went flat immediately. My husband immediately slowed, pulled over, and we changed the tire. About a month ago the passenger side rear axle tire had a suspected valve stem failure, the camper had been stationary in our driveway for a couple weeks prior to the flat. The spare tire valve stem began leaking air on XXX also. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Good Year Adventure All terrain M&S LT 275/70R18 load range E DOT [XXX] these tires came on my brand new 2022 Ford F250 bought at a Ford dealership in Colorado Springs February 2023 I drove it off the lot with only 67 miles on it. The truck as been driven 99% of time on paved roads with a unpaved county road here an there. The problem I am having is with all four mounted tires on the truck I noticed at approximately 9,000 miles the tread was peeling/chunking looking very rough & wearing fast for being so new. On October 16, 2023 took truck into dealer where I bought it at with 9,556 miles after returning from my trip they agreed it was unusual looking passed it off for me to contact Good Year which they looked at and said same but not willing to do full replacement of tires. Ford will not replace tires under warranty because "wear is consistent with driving on gravel or unpaved roads" Is that not what all terrain tires are made for? With me driving so little on unpaved roads I really think there most be a problem with the tire compound in this set of tires. After moving truck parked on concrete there are shreds/little pieces of rubber off of the tires that cannot be normal. The tires were rotated as recommend at the dealership at 5,553 miles. The leather covering on the instrument panel top pad of my 2022 F-250 Limited has shrunk and pulled away from its substrate on both the driver and passenger sides. On the passenger side, the covering has contracted enough that it has separated at the seam and lifted at the A-pillar corner, leaving an open gap and exposed backing material. The affected passenger-side panel is the airbag deployment cover; the panel is embossed "AIRBAG" directly on the failed surface. I am concerned that a covering which has shrunk, delaminated from its substrate, and separated at the seam will not tear along its designed deployment path. Ford has previously acknowledged this failure mode in the same component family: NHTSA campaign 22V684000 (Ford 22C23) recalled 2022 F-150 vehicles because an incorrectly manufactured right-side instrument panel cover could break and project fragments into the cabin or allow the airbag to deploy improperly, in noncompliance with FMVSS 208. The vehicle was delivered new on 05/16/2022 and is four years old. It has never been in a collision and the dashboard has never been repaired or disturbed. No dressing, protectant, or conditioner of any kind has ever been applied to this panel — it has only ever been cleaned with mild soap and water. The vehicle is garaged or covered roughly half the time, and I have used a windshield sunshade over this panel consistently since delivery. The failed surface is therefore the single most protected surface in the cabin, and it is the one that failed. Nothing about normal driving contacts it. This is a materials or adhesive failure that originated in manufacture. I reported the condition to the selling dealer, Sam Pack's Five Star Ford of Lewisville, TX. Repair was declined on the basis of elapsed time and mileage. No inspection of the deployment integrity of the panel was performed. I am filing this complaint so the condition is on record and so that NHTSA can determine whether this failure is occurring across the Su

Loss of power windows, loss of A/C and heat, loss of turn signals, loss of radio, and loss of head lights. As well as engine not shutting off after key is pulled out. The first initial problems arose a year ago, not long after purchasing a 2022 Ford f250 superduty. Only when it rained or during very cold days the power to the front dash would be out including power windows and locks, radio, and A/C and heat. Ford dealership was unable to diagnose the problem. A year down the road, directly following a hard rain, the engine would not shut off when turning the key and removing it. I had to pull the fuel pump relay fuse from under hood to get the truck to shut off. After removing the lid, which was way too easy to take off, I noticed that all th box fuses were submerged in water. Yes there are safety concerns, what if my child ir myself was to get trapped inside the truck if the power windows and locks are malfunctioning? And on a hot day when the heat and air conditioning are also not working? How long would the truck have to continue to run before it shut off? There are electrical fire risks directly correlated with water in the fuse box. There were no warning lamps. Ford posted a service bulletin on regards to this matter. The power distribution module and the fuse box lid are at fault. The truck has since been repaired and are making us pay for it because it is 5,000 miles out of warranty. WE ARE extremely dissatisfied Ford customers!

I live in a mountain area, many steep hills. When driving down a steep windy road (speed under 30 MPH) I use the exhaust brake so I don't have to ride my brakes. However, the exhaust brake keeps going off and on. Worse yet the engine throttles up increasing speed. I have to then press my brake peddle to slow the truck down. Once I release the brake the truck repeats the same process of speeding up. If I turn off the exhaust brake the issue goes away but then I need to ride the brake. If I am on a steep straight road going over 40 MPH the exhaust brake works like it is supposed to. Another issue of safety is when approaching a stop the engine RPM will not drop below 1200 RPM allowing the truck to slow down unless I push the brake harder then normal. This also happens when driving in a parking lot. The engine will stay at high idle moving the truck to fact in a parking lot situation. These issues are very consistent not just one in a while.
