2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 112 complaints across the 8 model-year 2020 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2020–2022 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel, 7.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
These trucks introduced the 10-speed automatic (10R140) and the 7.3L V8 gas engine ("Godzilla"). The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas carried over.
We counted 949 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2022 F-250s and F-350s: 633 from diesel trucks, 210 from 7.3L gas trucks and 90 from 6.2L gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem: harsh or delayed shifts, and on early diesels, recalls for parts that can fail.
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4) on diesels was recalled (24S78).
- Front-end shake is reported far less than on 2017–2019 trucks (7% of complaints vs. more than half).
- Several recalls cover the steering column, driveshafts, rear axles and cameras.
10-speed transmission
Transmission problems are the top topic: 90 diesel complaints (14%) and 48 7.3L complaints (23%). Owners describe harsh or clunky shifts, delays going into gear after the truck sits, and in some cases transmission replacement under warranty.
Recalls on 2020 diesels:
- A washer inside the transmission can break apart and stop the truck from holding Park (recall 22V256000).
- A brittle torque converter part can cause stalling (recall 20V365000).
When buying: let the truck sit, then shift into Drive and Reverse and note any long delay or hard clunk. On the test drive, watch for harsh or hunting shifts. Ask for transmission service and warranty records.
Diesel fuel pump (CP4) recall
Ford recalled 2020–2022 6.7L trucks because deposits from aged biodiesel can make the high-pressure fuel pump fail, causing power loss or stalling (recall 24V957000, Ford number 24S78). The fix is a software update, and Ford issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (recall 26V158000). Fuel pump problems come up in 94 diesel complaints.
When buying: confirm both recalls show as completed for the VIN.
7.3L gas
Most owners are happy with the 7.3L. Transmission complaints lead, and a smaller number of owners report valvetrain (lifter or camshaft) failures. Listen for ticking at idle.
Other recalls to check
- Steering column upper shaft may come apart on 2020–2021 trucks (recall 25V626000)
- Driveshaft damage on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
- Rear axle housing on 2020–2021 F-350 diesels with Dana 275 axles (recall 21V536000)
- Fuel filter cap leak on 2021 diesels (recall 22V013000)
- Several rear and 360-degree camera recalls
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN. There are many on these years.

Subject: Request for Review of Recall Remedy Effectiveness – Ford Recall 24S78 / NHTSA Recall 24V-957 Vehicle: 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty 6.7L Power Stroke VIN: [XXX] To Whom It May Concern: I am submitting this letter to document a significant safety event involving my 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty and to request that NHTSA consider whether the current recall remedy associated with Ford Recall 24S78 / NHTSA Recall 24V-957 adequately addresses vehicles that are already exhibiting symptoms of CP4 fuel pump deterioration. I am not submitting this complaint to seek financial compensation. My purpose is to provide information that may assist NHTSA in evaluating whether the existing remedy sufficiently protects motorists from the safety risks associated with CP4 pump failure. Background My vehicle's VIN has been confirmed as included in the affected population covered by the CP4 fuel pump recall. Prior to the ultimate failure, the vehicle exhibited symptoms that, in hindsight, may have been indicators of fuel-system deterioration. In February 2026, I documented concerns regarding abnormal starting behavior and specifically questioned whether either vehicle battery was failing. No battery issue was identified. Believing the issue might be battery related, I replaced both batteries at my own expense. The starting concern continued. 10r140 paired with 6.7 powerstroke in a 2020 f250 build date 11/19 at the Kentucky plant. My truck specs and build date and location is in the timeframe of the planetary gear recall, ford has also issued tsb’s about the cdf bushing that should have been a recall because it is a design flaw on every 2020-2022 model truck. It’s not fair that we should have to pay for a tsb bc we don’t have warranty left. My truck has 84,000 miles but is out of the 5 years warranty period. Symptoms I am having with my transmission are: Harsh engaging to drive and reverse Flair shifts bad sometimes almost like it goes into neutral between changing gears Has shifted from 4th to 1st instead of 4th to 5th or 6th, then it started shifting normal right after. Had my factory 3250rpm limiter not been moved to 4500rpm the truck would have locked the rear wheels up and possible caused driveline damage or other damaged. Also had a car been behind me when this happened I would have been in a wreck because it slammed to a low speed and the car would have rear ended me. Slips in 4th and 7th gear the most but sometimes in other gears Bumps when it shifts a lot of the gears Sometimes shudders and shakes and will almost make like a pop noise Will clunk on downshift from 5-3 Sometimes clunks when upshifting 3-5 I have had the truck looked at by an independent diesel mechanic I use and he said there is a problem somewhere in the transmission, it’s either planetary gear or cdf bushing has moved or the drum itself has cracked. The component itself has not been inspected because the only was to inspect this is to tear the transmission down. The pan has been dropped and had a lot of metal material on the magnet. No codes on the dash but my mechanic said I had dtcs stored for the transmission. I have created a case claim with Ford trying to see if they will extend the recall for the known issue but I have had zero luck with them. I have videos of the issues but can’t upload them on here.

The last time it was at this dealership they cracked my windshield and said they get back with me about getting it fixed so far nothing and I have called a number of times and now being told they had no idea about it. It has been several months but guess that is going to have to fall on me because no one wants to take accountability of their own actions. While driving at speeds above 30mph truck will have the death wobble. We will lose complete control in direction of steering. Have to try to stop and then turn the wheel right and left before the truck will regain normal travel. Is a huge safety issue and has almost caused us to wreck. Has happened multiple times and we have been unable to determine what has caused the issue. We have had the steering column recall fixed and have even changed the tie rod ends with no change.

02/04/2026 69k miles. I brought my vehicle in because I got a check engine light on the dash and had loss of power. Was informed that my fuel pump had failed and sent metal shards through the whole fuel system. The damage was covered by the recall, which also included reprogramming of the tcm and pcm. Was then told that the reflash of those systems was a failure, and that the Ford Motor Company was working on a remedy. My dealership has since completed a full fuel system replacement, and there still isn't a fix for the programming issue. This is a revenue generating vehicle, and the only one, for my small business. I lost many clients due to inability to perform the work I was contracted to do. My dealership did offer me a loaner vehicle, but it's not one that can perform the work that my truck was able to do, and was told not to use the vehicle for any commercial work or towing, as thats not allowed. Ive reached out to customer relations to get updates, and have had no help from them, save for telling me they're working on it, and will hope to have a remedy soon.

NHTSA Complaint Text (Copy/Paste) Vehicle: 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty 6.7L Power Stroke Recall: 24S78 – Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Software Update Complaint: Ford has issued Recall 24S78 for the high-pressure fuel pump defect on my 2020 F-250, but the company has not provided an actual remedy. The recall shows as open on my VIN, and Ford’s documentation says a PCM software update is the fix, but Ford released the software and then pulled it back within a week. My dealership confirmed Ford removed the remedy from their system, so they cannot perform the recall at all. This leaves my truck exposed to a known safety defect with no available repair. The high-pressure fuel pump failure this recall addresses can cause sudden loss of power, engine stall, or complete shutdown while driving. Until a working remedy is released, I’m driving a truck that Ford has admitted has a serious safety defect, but they have not provided any fix or timeline. I am requesting NHTSA investigate why the remedy was withdrawn, why no replacement remedy has been provided, and why Ford is leaving owners with a known safety risk for an extended period. This is an expensive vehicle, and the defect can cause catastrophic engine damage and create a hazardous situation on the road. Owners deserve an effective recall remedy that is actually available. Not exactly sure when the recall was first brought to light but I do know it has been months now.

On October 3, 2025 our 2020 Ford F250 King Ranch 6.7 diesel broke down with no start and check engine light. We contacted Ford. We towed the vehicle, at our expense to the dealership we purchased it from approximately one year ago on October 6, 2025. I contacted Ford on October 3, 2025 and received a claim number. On October 7, 2025 the Ford dealership contacted us to inform us the high pressure fuel pump catastrophically failed. It cracked the pump housing. It is a 12,000.00 repair. It is a safety recall. The pickup on has approximately 56,000 miles. The 5 year power train warranty ended September 15, 2025. I have contacted Ford twice sense January 0f 2025 to see if there was a resolution to this recall and they stated there is no fix as of this time. The dealership and I have contacted Ford Customer Service several times. I have left several messages for the representative handling our case and was promised call backs but never did. On October 10, 2025 there was a new case generated due to the lack of communication. Both the dealership and I were promised a call back and we did not receive one. We use this pickup for work and we are losing income. I asked for a loaner and I was told that was not possible. I pulled a Carfax on this pickup and found that possibility this vehicle was bought back twice. When we purchased it, the service record give to us did not show that information. We would like for the repairs to be completed in a timely manner. The dealership stated on October 8, 2025 that the entire fuel system would need to be replaced and could have it completed in three business days. I am not feeling comfortable knowing the pickup has been bought back from Ford two other times and not informing us. Also I am worried it may have caused engine damage.

My 2020 Ford F-250 King Ranch with a 6.7L V8 Turbo Diesel engine experienced severe engine failure while I was driving. The engine was completely destroyed and had to be replaced. My warranty company paid to install a new engine into the truck, but did not pay to have the remaining components fixed that were directly damaged by the engine failure. There was severe damage done to the fuel pump, DEF system, and wiring harnesses that caused the truck to be permanently into a mode called "LIMP Mode" which electronically governs the truck to 50 MPH. There was and still is an unresolved recall on the truck. The recall is as follows: #24S78 POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE UPDATE BIODIESEL DEPOSIT ACCUMULATION. The NHTSA number is: NHTSA: #24V957. There were absolutely zero (0) warning signs that alerted me that this was an issue before the engine failed. No alerts or warning lamps were illuminated on the truck before it failed. All i got was a letter in the mail stating that the engine could fail due to this components and that there is no known solution to fixing the problem. This issue caused my engine to fail while I was driving to work. There are issues with the truck still that were directly caused by this issue that the warranty will not cover INCLUDING this recalled component that has no available solution. I have a 2 month old son and a wife that rely on me having this truck. I have risked the safety of my family, and others on the roads, unknowingly by operating this truck on the roads. I am asking that Ford Motor Company be held Liable for all damages to my truck, and the repurchase of the truck for full price. This is unacceptable from a company as big as Ford Motor Company.

I have not received any response or confirmation of receipt. I want to correct my earlier characterization — after further research, I understand that 20B39 is a Customer Satisfaction Program, not a safety recall. That said, the core issue and my position remain the same, and I want to lay out where things stand clearly. The situation: - My vehicle is covered under CSP 20B39 (Front View and CHMSL Camera — PCB conductivity issue causing intermittent camera operation) - The program is in effect through November 30, 2030 or 150,000 miles, and the repair is to be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner - My servicing dealer, Santa Margarita Ford, attempted to complete the CSP work but could not because the vehicle's Gateway Module is not communicating properly - The dealer has advised that the Gateway Module must be replaced before the camera work under XXX can be completed My position: Ford issued CSP XXX and committed to completing this repair at no charge. If the Gateway Module must be functional in order for Ford's own program to be executed, then resolving the Gateway Module issue is Ford's prerequisite to meet — not an out-of-pocket cost to push to the customer. I'm not asking for anything beyond INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Component: Air Conditioning / Heater Subject: Recurrent HVAC System Failure - Passenger-Side Temperature Control Malfunction I am reporting a recurring failutre of the vehicle's HVAC system affecting the passenger-side temperature control. Specifically the passenger-side air vents intermittently and repeatedly blowing hot air while the driver-side continue to operate normally with cooled air. This condition results in inconsistent cabin temperature control andrenders the air conditioning system ineffective for occupants on the passenger side. Timeline of Failures and Repairs: July 2023: Initial occurrence of passenger side hot air condition. Vehicle was taken to authorized Ford dealership (McRee Ford). Repairs were performed; however the specific root cause either identified or not permanently corrected as another recurrence happened August 2025: Took it back to McRee Ford due to an identical issue reoccurred where the passenger side was blowing hot air. They attempted to repair with the same technician and was again only a temporary resolution as the issue again occurred March 2026: Passenger side blowing hot air for the third time. Took it to a different authorized Ford dealership (Cook Ford) where again, it was identified as a blend door actuator issue. Safety Concern: While the issue may appear to be a comfort concern, it presents a potential safety risk in high temperature environments such as Texas. (Heat related stress or illness for passengers) Multiple authorized dealership seem to be unable to resolve the issue. Currently vehicle is with Cook Ford and was advised that additional funding would be needed for a permanent fix. I've already been financially burdened with taking the vehicle twice to McRee Ford and now a third time to Cook Ford for the same issue, and being told upfront that the failure may again happen. I request an investigation into this matter and HVAC issue. Thank you.

Cannot believe this is not required to be repaired as it really jeopardizes the safety of infants in car seats. Such a easy fix for this type of possible safety issue. I have 3 Ford trucks and 1 Ford Explorer but very concerned the newest is a accident waiting to happen with one of my Grandkids and these inoperative locks.

Tailgate will open by itself going down the road and sometimes when parked. Key fob is in console not my pocket so I know the button is not being pressed accidentally. Some mornings when I leave for work it will be down. Seems to do it more often when I start truck, release parking brake and shift into reverse. If I’m pulling my trailer and it does this it’s going to damage tailgate also safety concern loosing cargo while going down road. I have checked the key fob and it takes two consecutive presses to open tailgate. That seems to work fine.

Mine and my families saftey was at risk when the A/C failed to run during a trip home. It was a damp rainy day and the windshield completely fogged over on the inside. Running heat and opening windows would not clear the visibly issue. There was 0% visibility. I had to drive with my head out the window to slow to a stop and wait hours before the A/C resumed working. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The problem has been reproduced every time I drive the truck and has been verified and attempted service by two separate Ford Dealers. The truck was with the first Dealer for 1.5 months. I am in communication with the second Dealer now. This was a Ford buy-back vehicle. The claim was that the vehicle was overheating and that a fan shroud was replaced to fix the issue. I am skeptical that there wasn't more to the issue that wasn't resolved. No warning prior to failure. July 2022 is when the problem caused me issue. I do believe the issue was there since I purchased the vehicle used in August 2021, but the vehicle was not driven much so it never affected me.

On 4/24/2022, during a snow storm the passenger side wiper failed to work and came disconnected from the vehicle. The drivers side wiper stopped working and would not return to the downward (parked) position. Both wiper arms are stripped and non-functional. I was forced to wait for two days for weather/roads to clear before I could leave for my destination, due to the non-functioning wipers and weather. I tried to order new wiper arms from on-line dealers and third party dealers only to have all orders canceled as that there are no parts available, and that new availability was unknown. While in search of these parts, I found that there is a Ford recall on this issue, Safety notice #22S26 / NATSA #22V250. On 5/18/2022 I went to a Ford dealer for repairs and was told there are no parts, with no known time of receiving such parts. On 6/10/2022 I returned to the dealer and was told the same information, no parts. On 6/14/2022 I called Ford and was given a case number, and informed that the arrival of any new replacement parts was still unknown. The truck is obviously not safe to drive in, or when inclement weather is advised and/or happening. I have had to pull off the road and wait out rain storms and fog as well. Ford has made no offer of reimbursement due to lost use of this vehicle , or offered to sponser a loaner truck for use while waiting for the the repairs/parts to come available. At best, Ford has offered to try and escalate my request for replacement parts, which to date is still unknown, and parts are still unavailable. ... Which leaves me with a, new 2020 F-250 that is, and has been, unsafe drive since April of this year (which, by the way, I pay almost $1000.00 per month in a loan payment on.)

[XXX] watch?v=4QLrqlCd3c0 * This video is about the South Texas taillight theft rings that local Ford Dealers are aware of and not notifying the customers to protect their property. The Tail lights only take 30 to 45 seconds to steal and cost between $3,500.00 to $4,200.00 to buy plus install and coding. They are in shortage according to local Ford dealer because of the thefts. So, you have to go out to Facebook Market Place and buy your lights back from a host of characters reselling these lights. The consumers are out a lot of money and time dealing with , body shop, insurance company, and a host of characters. It's the next Ford part theft ring that cost folks money they cannot spare ....This is BS Ford Motor and Dealers!!!!!. The thieves easily bypass the alarm because of Ford's design that allows tailgate to be open from inside after easily removing inspection cover (4 screws) and remove the lights in 30 seconds (two screws per tail light). The theft of the Tail Lights makes the truck undriveable. The Ford Light Theft is so bad that there are a shortage of lights and Body Shop long lead-times if you try and order and install through Ford Body Shop. Could be all corrected if factory alarm would go off when tail gate drops after being set and using $10.00 worth of anti theft screws. Ford is not notifying F150/f250 customers when they know this is happening. Cost to consumer $4,500 to $5,000.00 and months of waiting for your truck. The thieves are advertising the lights on Facebook Market Place and E-Bay Motors. * This is a circus that Ford can stop by fixing a alarm system and using anti thief fasteners. The components in questions is transmission. My sister had borrowed my truck. She put the truck in park and walked back inside to grab an item. Her dog ran out of the house and at that moment she realized the truck was rolling forward. Luckily they was a passenger in the passenger seat that was quick to act and climbed over the middle console and pressed on the brake. There is a video of the insistent. The passenger then confirmed the truck was In park and moved the selector to reverse then park then reverse and park again. Please note the truck was on relatively flat ground. Not a huge incline hill. The truck could have killed the dog or even ran over my sister in her pursuit to get her dog away from the truck. They problem was attempted to be recreated at the moment of the incident but wasn’t retractable at the time. I will be checking it every time I drive the truck from hear on. AS A RESULT IT HAS A LOOP IN IT THAT IS POSITIONED BETWEEN THE MAIN LEAF SPRINGS AND A SECONDARY SPRING THAT I BELIEVE ENGAGES WHEN THE TRUCK IS FULLY LOADED. 2020 Ford F250 Super Duty, I have a Severe Death Wobble that has developed for the second time in a short period of time. The Ford Death Wobble is The Violent Shaking of the Vehicle can cause loss of control of the vehicle and difficulty steering wile vehicle is in operation at any time under typical driving conditions or speed. This exposes the driver and occupants of vehicle, as well as others who share the road with them, to an increased risk of accident, injury, or death. This description of death wobble was taken from a class action lawsuit that was filed in 2019. The first occurrence happened around 47,000 miles. I brought it in to the dealership; they said it was a steering damper not covered under the warranty. I paid for the replacement of steering damper. However the replacement did not fix the issue. I took it back in for further evaluation and repairs. After nearly a week of them having the vehicle at the dealership; they finally agreed to have the track bar replaced under warranty. The technician working on vehicle said that an axle needed to be replaced as well but it was not replaced at the time. After track bar was replaced; there was a drastic improvement and problem was resolved but short lived. About 7 months later and at 85,000 miles the death wobble has returned and is much worse. Due to the issue, steering is very loose and sloppy. causing you to catch the vehicle from side to side of the lane due to the steering wheel not being straight. setting off errors and disables many of the safety features. Some of the features that are disabled wile driving: advanced traction control system, pre-collision assist system fault, abs system, hill descent control fault, hill start assist. After bringing truck to dealership for this issue again; they quickly realized that the issue has returned again and stated that the axle shaft will need to be replaced this time in addition to prior parts. They again are trying to say that warranty may not cover repairs

Left rear seat belt buckle or system failed causing a fault in the Airbag/Restraint system. The fault initially happened in June of 2025 with about 50k miles on the vehicle. I took it to a dealer who told me the buckle was not available and the whole system needed to be replaced for over $1500. Vehicle seldom has anyone in the back seat but that is where my children sit. Looking at posts on the internet, this seems to be a common enough problem that this should be taken care of under recall or customer service warranty.
