2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 112 complaints across the 8 model-year 2020 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2020–2022 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel, 7.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
These trucks introduced the 10-speed automatic (10R140) and the 7.3L V8 gas engine ("Godzilla"). The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas carried over.
We counted 949 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2022 F-250s and F-350s: 633 from diesel trucks, 210 from 7.3L gas trucks and 90 from 6.2L gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem: harsh or delayed shifts, and on early diesels, recalls for parts that can fail.
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4) on diesels was recalled (24S78).
- Front-end shake is reported far less than on 2017–2019 trucks (7% of complaints vs. more than half).
- Several recalls cover the steering column, driveshafts, rear axles and cameras.
10-speed transmission
Transmission problems are the top topic: 90 diesel complaints (14%) and 48 7.3L complaints (23%). Owners describe harsh or clunky shifts, delays going into gear after the truck sits, and in some cases transmission replacement under warranty.
Recalls on 2020 diesels:
- A washer inside the transmission can break apart and stop the truck from holding Park (recall 22V256000).
- A brittle torque converter part can cause stalling (recall 20V365000).
When buying: let the truck sit, then shift into Drive and Reverse and note any long delay or hard clunk. On the test drive, watch for harsh or hunting shifts. Ask for transmission service and warranty records.
Diesel fuel pump (CP4) recall
Ford recalled 2020–2022 6.7L trucks because deposits from aged biodiesel can make the high-pressure fuel pump fail, causing power loss or stalling (recall 24V957000, Ford number 24S78). The fix is a software update, and Ford issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (recall 26V158000). Fuel pump problems come up in 94 diesel complaints.
When buying: confirm both recalls show as completed for the VIN.
7.3L gas
Most owners are happy with the 7.3L. Transmission complaints lead, and a smaller number of owners report valvetrain (lifter or camshaft) failures. Listen for ticking at idle.
Other recalls to check
- Steering column upper shaft may come apart on 2020–2021 trucks (recall 25V626000)
- Driveshaft damage on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
- Rear axle housing on 2020–2021 F-350 diesels with Dana 275 axles (recall 21V536000)
- Fuel filter cap leak on 2021 diesels (recall 22V013000)
- Several rear and 360-degree camera recalls

The transmission began malfunctioning by having hard shifting issues and losing power in some gears. An indicator on the dash lit up resembling a mechanics open-end wrench. Research online showed that the vehicle should not be driven and taken immediately to a mechanic or dealership. If driven especially pulling a heavy load like the fifth wheel that I bought the truck to tow the transmission could fail causing a serious safety issue. I immediately took the vehicle to a certified Ford dealership. At the dealership they informed me that parts in the transmission had failed and that it was the same exact condition as shown in recall 20S33. The noted recall was for trucks manufactured in January and February of 2020. My truck was manufactured March of 2020. The time warranty had expired for the vehicle but the mileage warranty was for 60,000 mi and the truck failed at $29,800. The transmission failed due to a manufacturing defect but I was billed over $9,800 for the repair. I have attached photos of the work order and receipt.

I am the owner of a 2020 Ford F‑350 equipped with the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine. My vehicle is subject to an open safety recall, NHTSA 24V957, involving the high‑pressure fuel system. I have been informed by an authorized Ford dealer that there is currently no effective repair remedy available. While I have not experienced loss of power, my vehicle has exhibited abnormal transmission shifting behavior beginning around 40,000 miles. This concern was documented by the dealer and described as normal operation. The condition persisted and was documented again around 60,000 miles, although the dealer stated they could not replicate the issue. Given the unresolved safety recall and ongoing powertrain behavior, I am concerned about vehicle safety, drivability, and long‑term reliability, and I am submitting this complaint to document the risk before a safety‑related failure occurs.

Ford sent this recall letter in October, 2025. It’s unbelievable, and unacceptable that Ford would describe a “potential loss of steering control resulting in a crash or injury (or death). However we don’t instruct you to stop driving your vehicle. Parts to fix your defective steering column which could come apart in your hands while driving down the interstate with loved ones, or towing (full ton trucks are meant for heavy towing) won’t be available until 1st quarter 2026”. Are you serious? It’s now halfway through 1st quarter 2026, & still no follow up from Ford. How many people have to die, before the actuaries at NHTSA decide it’s time to put pressure on Ford to expedite this fix? I had no choice but to risk driving my truck 1,200 miles to Florida last week. Thankfully, we made it. However, I refuse to drive it any further as it’s parked in my driveway. I will not hook up my boat or horse trailer until Ford manufactures a new, safe part, and installs it in my truck’s steering to correct this deadly condition. What is NHTSA doing to pressure Ford to get this done? If you send me a standard, boiler plate answer like others have received “be patient, don’t call us, call Ford (and talk to their AI robot)” I will get together with others affected by this recall, and we will go to the media, and possibly higher, if that’s what it takes. Shame on you, claiming to be on the side of living people who just want to stay alive.

I haul a truck camper and I do disaster relief/recovery with several groups. I use my truck to get there and sleep in my camper due a lack of resources during a disaster. This recall has prevented me from responding. Ford has given no indication of when this is to be repaired.

Vehicle produced symptoms over time: Loss of Ford Pass connectivity, Inconsistent turn signal function, occasional dashboard alarm for Open Driver Door while driving, unwarranted security alarm triggers when still at home. Second to last incident was an unwarranted security alarm that triggered, and was unable to be stopped by use of the security controls (lock/unlock, alarm key button). Horn "wore out" as if fuse burned. Disconnected battery to stop. Two days later, after reconnecting the battery I drove the vehicle, Horn was not functional, and I was unable to stop the engine. Once started, the vehicle did not turn off, even with key completely removed from ignition switch. This was repeatable, every ignition cycle, thereafter. I drove to the dealer, that morning. The dealer mechanic was required to shut off the engine. Dealer mechanic diagnosed failed Battery Junction Box. After Repair, Mechanic diagnosed faulty Body Control Module. Dealer mechanic also recommended replacement of full "Main" wiring harness, interconnecting the two. The cause for all failures was corrosion and electrical shorts due to water ingress. I am aware Ford has issued numerous TSBs and recalls for faulty BCMs, in the same age range as this vehicle. Also, TSBs for water intrusion into the BCM. The mechanic took photos of corrosion on both the BCM and main wiring harness. My prior vehicle was a 2011 Ford F-150, with the same 6.2L engine. No such faults were experienced up to Nov. 2023 sale. Photos of the corrosion on main wiring harness and BCM attached. Dealer has possession of the vehicle. Repairs in progress. Ford has declined support for faulty components; Recalls not associated with this vehicle. Estimated repairs to date on 6 year old vehicle on critical electronics in excess of $7,000.

My vehicle was built in October of 2020 which falls into the same time frame of the other vehicle models and build dates. Will Ford be held accountable if I happen to back up and hit someone or damage something? My vehicle along with probably many other vehicles need to be added to this recall.

Our 2020 Ford F-350 experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure while in motion. The driveline disconnected, the rear axle locked up, and the transmission bellhousing was destroyed—leaving the truck completely immobile and blocking traffic. This occurred with no prior warning and posed a significant crash risk. At the time, Ford Safety Recall 22S22 (related to a known defect in the transmission’s output planetary four assembly) was open and had not yet been completed. The symptoms and failure we experienced match the failure scenario described in Ford's own bulletin for 22S22: driveline separation, internal transmission damage, and loss of control or Park function. Ford has denied coverage, stating the failure was due to a "loose pinion flange nut" and unrelated to the recall. However, they have not provided any inspection documentation, photos, or evidence that the recalled components were properly inspected or ruled out as the root cause. We have repeatedly requested this documentation from both Ford and the dealership, but neither has provided it. We are concerned that the failure was caused by the exact defect identified in Recall 22S22, and that Ford is failing to take responsibility or follow full recall procedures—including post-failure inspection and transparency. We are requesting that NHTSA investigate this case as a potential mishandling of a known safety defect and failure to comply with recall responsibilities.

The component/system that failed or malfunctioned is the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) NOx Catalyst Efficiency system, triggering DTC P20EE – SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). This issue began immediately after Ford Recall 24S78 (PCM software update) was performed on April 29, 2026 at Ferman Ford of Countryside. The truck had zero emissions or check-engine issues prior to the recall flash and was perfectly maintained to Ford standards with Howes diesel treatment every tank. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed multiple times by the dealer: After the May 4 PCM reprogram per TSB 21-2248 After replacement of both NOx sensors on May 5 (code returned in under 17 miles) After replacement of the DEF injector (code returned again) The dealer only performed one manual DPF regeneration instead of the two required by Ford SSM 49202 and pinpoint test RD15, and they did not complete the SCR Parameter Reset. They are now quoting an additional ~$2,000 out-of-pocket for a DPF replacement after partial goodwill assistance was approved. The vehicle has been repeatedly inspected and repaired by Ferman Ford. No independent inspection yet. Ford Customer Service has been contacted and partial goodwill was approved, but significant out-of-pocket costs remain. Warning lamps/messages (Service Engine Soon light + “exhaust emission control system is not operating as expected”) first appeared immediately after the April 29 recall PCM flash and have continued ever since. Safety risk: A loss of motive power, entry into limp mode, or reduced power while driving could result in a crash or inability to maintain highway speed. This appears to be a direct consequence of the Recall 24S78 PCM software update tightening emissions monitoring. A component has not yet failed but an existing recall (Ford recall 24S78 / NHTSA ID 24V957) describes the potential for loss of motive power increasing the risk of a crash. This recall was issued in December of 2024. I received a notice in January of 2026 that the repair was available, went to my local dealer and was told the recall had been paused on 02/03/2026 - no actual repair is currently available. I live full-time in my 2021, 20,000 lb., 5th-wheel RV and frequently tow it with no other option than my 2020 F350 with the open recall. To quote the recall document, "Ford has not issued instructions to stop driving your vehicle under this safety recall" but a loss of motive power is exponentially worse when towing a large load which is what this vehicle was purpose-built to do.

Truck's power door lock actuators are failing and fail to unlock the doors via remote or the interior door(s) electric unlock button(s). The only way to open the door is via exterior key (if you happen to have it accessible) or if you pull the vehicle's interior door handle, which then "pops" the door lock button. This failure is alarming as in the event of an emergency, access to the interior cab of the vehicle can not be gained from the exterior without a key. Similarly, access to the interior of the cab can only be provided when one squeezes, or pulls, the vehicle's interior door handle. If a driver/passenger is incapacitated for some emergent reason, there is no easy way to gain rapid access to the passenger compartment without extrication type equipment. From my on-line research it appears that Ford has had previous problems with this and actually acknowledge this through Ford Customer Satisfaction Program(s) 20M04, 19N06, 18N03. Appreciate any assistance and insight you may be able to provide.

The connectors (part #1 HUZZ-14S411-HB) and (part #2 HUZZ-14S411-FA) are located in on the frame of the truck where the back wheels throw water towards when driving on wet terrain. They tend to hold water which causes electrical damage. This is happening on multiple ford trucks from 2020 - current models. This is causing tail light, AC, radio and other failures to occur.

I am the issues as the recalls for the 2023 f350 The Problem: The Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM/ITM) may lose communication with the vehicle when it starts up, resulting in a loss of trailer brake function, turn signals, and stop lamps.
- Filed Mar 2026

In 2020 I Purchased Meyer Products Night Saber 4 LED Headlights for my snowplow. I thought they would be better than Meyers Nite Blaster 2 Halogen Headlights. Which I have found not to be the case. The Lens Defroster does not work well in heavy snow. They do not stay on constantly to keep melting snow off of the lens. Which becomes heavly snow laden severely impacting driving visibility. On more than one occasion I have had to pull over and manually clean the snow build up off of the lens. The most recent was the evening of Thursday [XXX] in which Maine had a heavy wet snow fall in Penobscot & Waldo County area. I had called Meyer Products in the past to complain about the the heater grid issue of not being able to keep up with keeping the lens clear & free of snow build up. I have included a picture of the plow headlight. So you can view the heater grid. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I WAS DRIVING FORWARD APPROX 5 MPH AND LOST ALL CONTROL OF THE STEERING. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NOT MOVING THE FRONT TIRES AT ALL. THERE WAS NO WARNING, AND INDICATION THAT THE STEERING WAS GOING BAD. THE TRUCK IS 2020 WITH APPROX 80,0000 MILES. NOT LIFTED, NO OFF ROADING. THE STEERING WHEEL WILL JUST SPIN NO STOP TO IT IN EITHER DIRECTION. MY UNDERSTANING WITH THIS TRUCK IS THERE IS NO INTERMIDATED SHAFT SO IT DIDNT SLOWLY GO OUT. THE NIGHT BEFORE MY FAMILY AND I WERE COMING DOWN FROM LAKE TAHOE WITH A BOAT ATTACHED. HAD THIS HAPPENED AT THAT SPPED WITH A TRAILER IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT OUTCOME.

Passenger, right side door mirror has failed in that while driving, regardless of speed, the mirror no longer stays outright and provides rear and blind spot view capabilities, therefore making lane changes hazardous with a high potential for crash probability. The internal mechanism(s) have failed and while driving the side mirror folds inward and collapses towards the door making it impossible to see what is next to you in an adjacent lane as well as what may be approaching from the right rear and right lane. The vehicle is scheduled to be inspected by a Ford dealership tomorrow (8/1/2025) to be assessed and see if they will replace the mirror. The mirror in question is pristine and has not been subjected to harsh treatment or been struck by any outside forces that would cause internal damage. No crash reports are associated with this vehicle.

I have made multiple attempts since I received notice of the recall to schedule an appointment to have the issue repaired, but the dealership has yet to return a single call.

Cannot put truck in tow mode or any other mode-defaults to slippery road mode. Again dangerous. Says hill start assist, hill descent assist and pre-collision assist is unavailable . This is all very potentially dangerous especially when hauling! Dealer cannot find problem. After truck is driven a while settings can be re-entered-truck has to be turned off first.
