2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 106 complaints across the 6 model-year 2012 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
Price & value
We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.
Is it a good deal?
- Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
- Enter that value and the asking price below.
Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.
The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.
What owners should know
Covers 2011–2016 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
Most 2011–2016 F-350s have the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. The F-350 shares its engines, front end and most of its problems with the F-250 of the same years.
We counted 834 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2011–2016 F-350s: 726 from 6.7L diesel trucks and 74 from 6.2L gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Front-end shake ("death wobble") is the most frequently reported problem by far: 4 in 10 diesel complaints (291 of 726).
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is the most expensive known 6.7L failure.
- 2011–2012 trucks have extra early problems: turbochargers, exhaust temperature sensors and NOx sensors.
- The 6.2L gas engine draws far fewer complaints and has a simple, durable reputation.
Front-end shake ("death wobble")
Owners describe a violent shaking of the front end and steering wheel after a bump at highway speed. Ford released a service bulletin in 2011 that added a new steering stabilizer, but owners frequently report that the shake comes back unless worn parts are replaced, especially the track bar and its bushings, plus ball joints and tie rods. Bigger tires and lifts make it more likely.
When buying: have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends for movement. Hit bumps at 50–70 mph on the test drive.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2)
When the 6.7L's Bosch CP4.2 pump fails, it can send metal through the whole fuel system, and the repair often means replacing the pump, injectors, lines and rails. Owners commonly describe bills of $8,000 or more. Failures are commonly linked to water or contamination in the fuel. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall covers 2020–2022 trucks only, not these years.
When buying: ask for fuel filter service records and whether the pump has ever been replaced.
2011–2012 early-production issues
- Turbocharger: early turbos used ceramic bearings that frequently failed; Ford later switched to steel bearings. Ask whether the turbo was replaced.
- Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors can cause power loss or shutdowns (26 F-350 complaints). Ford recalled 2011–2015 F-350s with ambulance or fire truck packages for this (recall 15V175000), but not regular pickups.
- NOx sensors (2011): Ford ran a program to replace them on 2011 trucks.
Emissions, cooling and rust
- DEF and NOx sensor problems come up in 34 diesel complaints. Look for exhaust fluid warnings and ask whether the emissions system has been removed ("deleted").
- Radiator leaks and leaks at the upper radiator hose fitting and coolant bottle are commonly reported on 6.7L trucks.
- Check cab corners, rocker panels, wheel arches and cab mounts for rust in salt-belt states.
Maintenance tips for owners
Ford's published intervals for these years (use "severe" if you tow, plow or idle a lot): engine oil every 10,000 miles (5,000 severe), both fuel filters every 22,500 miles (15,000 severe), and transmission fluid every 150,000 miles (50,000 severe). Drain the water separator whenever the dash says "water in fuel."

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Front-end shake (death wobble)
Moderate DIYSigns: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.
Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure
Easy DIYSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.
Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
6.7L exhaust temperature (EGT) sensor failure
Moderate DIYSigns: Check engine light, reduced power, or the engine shutting down. Most common on 2011–2012 trucks.
Fix: Scan for codes to find which sensor failed and replace it. There are four on the exhaust.
6.7L coolant leaks
Moderate DIYSigns: Low coolant, a sweet smell, dried coolant crust on the upper radiator hose fitting, radiator or coolant bottle.
Fix: Find the source. The upper radiator hose O-ring is a common and simple fix. Radiators and coolant bottles are bigger jobs.
6.7L DEF heater and NOx sensors
Moderate DIYSigns: DEF or exhaust fluid warnings, reduced power, check engine light.
Fix: Scan for codes. Common fixes are a NOx sensor or the DEF heater and pump assembly.

The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while his son was driving 25 MPH, the front track bar unexpectedly fractured into two pieces, causing the vehicle to swerve off the road. Additionally, the vehicle had experienced the death wobble. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the front track bar fracture caused the rear axle to be pushed into the fuel cooler, which caused the fuel cooler to be punctured and to leak. The contact was informed that the front track bar and the fuel cooler needed to be replaced, and a coolant flush needed to be performed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 300,000.

I'm currently experiencing the "Death Wobble" with my vehicle, making it unsafe to drive past 60 mph due to intense shaking. This is a serious safety concern for both me and my family. This issue happens frequently on the freeway, and we all fear that the wheels could fall off or the vehicle might flip over. When I took the vehicle to the service center, the advisor told me I needed to add a stabilizer to my front wheels and suggested that I buy the part online and install it myself, recommending YouTube for guidance. However, I have no idea what part to buy or where to get it. I’m not the designer of the truck, and I shouldn’t have to add extra parts for it to drive properly. I also believe this is a manufacturer issue, especially since multiple people seem to be experiencing the same problem.

2012 F350 Lariat 4x4, 125000 miles. While driving at 65 mph. I hit a spilt in the highway and the truck went into a death wobble, the most violent and scary thing to experience on the crowded highway. Only thing I could do was let it slow down coasting when it finally went away I accelerated back to highway speed and hit yet another bump in the highway and it went into another death wobble so violent I could not control the truck. This truck has no lift and is stock. This will kill someone one day or cause a serious accident. Ford should own this defect and fix it before they responsible for actual death.

I was on the road and I hit a bump on the freeway only going between 55 and 65 mph and the Truck immediately started to whobble out of control I almost hit the car next to me because I could not control it . It was a life and death experience I could never shake off . I spoke to the dealer and they claimed they had never heard of such thing and acted like they didn’t believe me. What ever is wrong with it needs to be recalled because I’m surprised that no one was hurt on rush our in a busy city like Salt Lake City. Ford is being very irresponsible for not fixing the problem.

Summary: We purchased a brand new 60000 dollar truck in 2012 or 2013 and was assured by the dealer that it had a warranty to cover any issues until either 100,000 miles or 5-6 years, whichever came first. After 4 years of ownership and around 67,000 miles, the truck started experiencing problems with a high idle and then abruptly shutting off. When taken to the dealer, they couldn't replicate the issues during a brief evaluation. However, a week later, while on the way to the bank, to get cash out for are stay at the hospital to give birth to are 6th child the truck shut off and wouldn't start again. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty high-pressure fuel pump due to water in the fuel and tried to charge the author $15,000 for repairs. The author questioned why the diesel fuel water separator and the second fuel filter system on the truck didn't catch the issue earlier and criticized the dealer for their negligence in ensuring safe and reliable transportation.

WE own a 2012 Ford F350 and have had two bad incidents with the dreaded “death wobble” and are afraid to even drive it because the truck now seems unsafe as it feels unsturdy as if it is starting to wobble and I don't dare even taking it on the freeway. My daughter had told me that the truck began shaking violently on her while on the freeway and I didn't fully understand what she meant until it happened to me. I was traveling on the freeway in cruise control, going the speed limit of 80 mph. Suddenly the truck began to shake violently. The whole front end, the steering wheel, my arms, my body, etc. were all shaking violently. I hit the brakes. I screamed and was terrified. I thought a tire had blown out or something and was sure I was going to wreck. Upon stopping, I just sat there for a moment in disbelief, trying to catch my breath. I am fortunate that no one hit me as I was halfway in the right lane of traffic. I got out expecting to see some kind of damage but saw none. I slowly drove to the first off ramp and gingerly drove home. Holding onto the steering wheel had left my arms feeling bruised and my mental being shaken. I was telling someone about what happened and he said "Oh, that is called a "Death Wobble" and he told me that Ford Super Duty F250s and F350s were known to have this problem. I went home a went on Google to educate myself about this "Death Wobble" and was so angry that Ford has done nothing to correct this problem or have a recall. I feel very lucky to not have caused or been in a serious accident. I look at this truck and am afraid to even drive it. I read that numerous drivers have reported frightening incidents of losing control of their trucks and that there have been serious accidents with injuries, and even deaths due to this defect on these Ford trucks. They should pay to correct whatever the problem is.

I purchased my F350 new in 2012. Since that time I have experienced a severe wobble in the front end while I am driving. It starts vibrating at about 45mph and sometimes escalates to where I have to almost slam on the brakes to stop it. It has done this probably 12-15 times and since 2022 it is definitely getting worse and worse. Ford says its my motor mounts, but it has done this since it was new! I read about the "death wobble" on the internet and I definitely have a defective front end. I am concerned that it may cause me to be in a bad accident after having to hit the brakes so hard to stop it. Can you assist?

when the truck is traveling at highway speeds and goes over an imperfection in the road surface like a bump, bridge expansion joint etc... The truck will vibrate violently and will not stop until the speed is reduced often times under 50 mph which can be dangerous on a highway. This has been happening for the past year and a half. I have tried brining it to multiple mechanics and have replaced a number of parts.

THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT MY TRUCK HAS LEFT ME ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. FORD HAD A RECALL OF ALL 2012 AMBULANCE F350 BECAUSE OF THIS EXACT SITUATION AND IS LEAVING THE CONSUMER TO WORRY WITH IT ON THEIR OWN. THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS THE EGT SENSOR 13 AND 14 IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. THESE SENSORS CONTINUE TO FAIL AND ALL FORD CAN DO IS TO KEEP MY VEHICLE FOR 4-5 DAYS AND TELL ME THAT THEY CANT FIND THE ISSUE AND THEY REPLACE THE SENSORS (ONLY TO FAIL AGAIN IN ABOUT A MONTH). I CAN NOT DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ANYWHERE WITHOUT THE THOUGHT OF FAILURE. THERE IS NO WAY I CAN TAKE THIS TRUCK OUT OF MY NORMAL AROUND TOWN AREA AS IF FAILURE DOES OCCUR, I AM STUCK. I AM AFRAID THAT IT IS GOING TO DIE ON ME IN TRAFFIC AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR DEATH OF MYSELF OR A PASSENGER. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO 3 DIFFERENT LOCAL DEALERS ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE AND KNOW NOTHING OF ANY OTHER SIMILAR INSTANCES OF THIS EVER HAPPENING. (I CAN SHOW YOU 50 CASES ONLINE THAT HAVE HAPPENED TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE) I AM LOOKING TO GET THIS TAKEN CARE OF AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS I AM DRIVING AT $65,000 VEHICLE THAT I CANT TRUST TO DRIVE ACROSS THE STATE LINE. ANY RECOURSE THAT YOU CAN OFFER IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AS FORD IS ACTING CLUELESS TO THIS ONGOING ISSUE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. *JS

On a Clear day, no rain while traveling on an interstate hwy at approx 70mph, I drove onto a bridge and my truck starting violently shaking , the complete front end was causing the truck to move from side to side and I could hardly hold onto the steering wheel! My wife was was so afraid we were going to roll over, as was I! Finally after taking my foot off of the gas, at about 30 or 40 mph it stopped! I'm taking it to my dealership first thing in the morning! Its not safe to drive, as I might not be so lucky next time it happens. I'm finished with ford trucks that's for sure!!!!

FOR A TRUCK THAT PEOPLE PAY UP TO $40,000 OT SHOULD BE ABLE TO CRUISE AT SPEEDS ABOVE 60-70 MPH WITH NO PROBLEM. IT SEEMS TO BE THROWN OFF BY THE SMALLEST DIVIT OR BUMP IN THE ROADS BUT ONLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WHICH MAKES IT THAT MUCH MORE DANGEROUS. I HAVE A 6 YEAR OLD THAT WAS IN THE TRUCK MANY TIMES AS THIS HAPPENS AND IT'S A SCARY THING IT FEELS LIKE THE WHEELS ARE GOING TONCOME OFF. ONLY HAD THIS TRUCK FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS NOW ALSO. IT SEEMS IN MINT CONDITION EXCEPT FOR THE SPEED WOBBLE.

4 MONTHS AGO I WAS TRAVELING AT 50 MPH. WHILE DRIVING MY FORD F350 SUPERDUTY AT THAT SPEED THE TRUCK HAD AN EXTREMELY BAD AND VIOLENT SHAKE IN THE STEERING WHEEL. DURING THIS TIME I HAD NO STEERING CONTROL, BRAKING WAS AT A VERY MINIMAL, AND PULLED THE TRUCK INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS HAS HAPPENED 6 OTHER TIMES IN THE PAST 4 MONTHS. DURING THIS TIME FORD MECHANICS HAVE TOLD ME THAT THIS DOESNT APPEAR TO BE A COMMON ISSUE SINCE IT DOESNT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. I REPLACED SHOCKS, TIRES, AND EVEN HAD THE SUSPENSION LOOKED AT BY CERTIFIED MECHANICS AND NOBODY HAS AN ANSWER FOR THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM IS A KNOWN ISSUE BY NHTSA AND FORD AND NOBODY SEEMS TO BE DOING ANYTHING TO FIX THIS ISSUE. IT'S GETTING TO THE POINT WHERE I CANNOT DRIVE MY ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION FOR FEAR OF CAUSING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT INJURING OR KILLING MYSELF, MY FAMILY, OR SOMEONE ELSE IN THE ROAD. WE WERE SOUTHBOUND ON INTERSTATE 5 IN ENCINITAS, CA WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE TRUCK POWERED DOWN AND AN ALERT APPEARED ON THE DASH: "STOP SAFELY NOW". I HAD VIRTUALLY NO POWER DESPITE DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS FORCED TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD WHERE I AS ABLE TO PARK WITH ONLY INCHES SEPARATING MY VEHICLE/TRAILER AND THE FREEWAY TRAFFIC. AS SOON AS I PLACED IT IN PARK, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. MY WIFE AND TWO YOUNG CHILDREN WERE WITH ME AND FOUND MYSELF IN A HELPLESS AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. I KNOW FROM READING OTHER POSTS THAT SOME WHO EXPERIENCED THE SAME EQUIPMENT FAILURE FOUND THEMSELVES UNABLE TO MOVE TO A SAFE LOCATION AND WERE LEFT STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROADWAY. MY COMPLAINT STEMS FROM THE KNOWLEDGE THAT FORD IS AWARE AND HAS BEEN AWARE FOR SOMETIME OF THE ISSUE OF BAD EGT SENSORS WHICH WHAT WAS ULTIMATELY DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED ON MY VEHICLE. HOWEVER THERE ARE FOUR SUCH SENSORS AND FROM READING OTHER COMPLAINTS REPLACING ONLY ONE (WHICH IS ALL FORD WOULD DO UNDER WARRANTY) ONLY DELAYS THE INEVITABLE FAILURE OF ANOTHER OF THE REMAINING SENSORS. I'M AWARE OF A RECENT RECALL OF AMBULANCES BY FORD FOR THE EXACT SAME REASON. I ONLY SPECULATE THAT FORD SAW THE LIABILITY IN HAVING AN AMBULANCE STALL IN A PRECARIOUS SPOT WITH A PERSON IN NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION ON BOARD. I FEEL MY EXPERIENCES AS WELL AS COUNTLESS OTHERS WOULD RISE TO THE LEVEL OF A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN THAT OF THE AMBULANCES WHICH FORD HAS ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY FOR. MY TRUCK IS A BLACK 2012 FORD, F-350 SUPER DUTY, FX4, LARIAT. 1.WHILE DRIVING ON I-10 TRAVELING ~67MPH I FELT A SUDDEN BUMPING OF ONE OF MY TIRES BEFORE I COULD REDUCE MY SPEED AND PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER TO GET OFF THE ROAD THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE CAUSING DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK AND BARELY MISSING OTHER VEHICLES I WAS PASSING ON THE ROAD. 2.AS I REDUCED MY SPEED AND WHILE PULLING OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, THE TIRE BLEW OUT, I WAS ABLE TO KEEP MY TRUCK UNDER CONTROL AND MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD SO THE TIRE COULD BE REMOVED SAFELY.

AT 55 MILES AN HOUR ON ROUGH PAVEMENT, THE TRUCK BEGIN TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE BACK AND FORTH. THIS SHAKING AND JERKING CAUSED ME TO ENTER INTO THE ONCOMING LANE OF TRAFFIC. IN ORDER TO REGAIN I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKE PEDAL CONTROL THEREBY GETTING THE SPEED DOWN TO 40 MILES AN HOUR. FORD SUGGESTED I CHECKING THE BALL JOINTS AND THE STEERING STABILIZERS. AFTER SPENDING OVER $600 IN PARTS (NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY)AND REPLACING THE WHOLE FRONT END LINKAGE, THE VEHICLE THEN DROVE FINE UNTIL I REACHED ANOTHER 45 THOUSAND MILES OR APPROXIMATELY 90 THOUSAND MILES TOTAL ON TRUCK. NOW IT HAS REPEATED THE SAME PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN THROWING ME INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE OF TRAFFIC. THE REASON FOR PURCHASING A NEW TRUCK IS TO HAVE A SAVE VEHICLE TO USE FOR PERFORMING MY JOB. THIS TRUCK HAS ALL ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT AND HAS NOT BEEN ALTERED IN ANY WAY PRIOR TO THIS EXPERIENCE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD. I HAVE FOUND AN AFTERMARKET STABILIZER BAR THAT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER I FEEL THAT FORD SHOULD RECALL AND REPAIR THIS PROBLEM WITH THE PROPER EQUIPMENT BEFORE SOMEONE LOOSES THEIR LIFE OF IT. *TR

FREQUENTLY ON DAMP AND COLD DAYS, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM STARTS MALFUNCTIONING. THE WIPERS FAIL TO WORK. THE LIGHTS (HEAD, PARKING FOG, BLINKERS) ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE TRUCK DON'T WORK. WHEN I REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE TRUCK THE RADIO AND ALL THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON EVEN AFTER I TRY TO LOCK THE DOORS. SOMETIMES THE RADIO RANDOMLY TURNS ON WHILE I'M NOT IN THE TRUCK. WHILE DRIVING THE TRUCK THE POWER STEERING SEEMS TO FREEZE UP AND THE TRUCK PULLS HARD TO THE RIGHT. WHENEVER THE TRUCK IS TURNED ON THERE IS A LOUD HUMMING NOISE THAT COMES FROM UNDER THE HOOD.

MOON ROOF SHATTERED WHILE TRAVELING ON A PAVED HIGHWAY ON A CLEAR DAY AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES PER HOUR. I HEARD A LOUD NOISE SIMILAR TO A GUN SHOT AND I FIRST THOUGHT A LARGE ROCK HAD HIT THE VEHICLE BUT I COULD NOT SEE ANY DAMAGE. I WAS APPROXIMATELY 200 YARDS BEHIND A TRACTOR TRAILER RIG WHICH WAS NOT A GRAVEL TRUCK OR AN OFF ROAD TYPE RIG. THE NEXT DAY I NOTICED A PIECE OF TINTED GLASS IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK AND CLIMBED INTO THE BED AND NOTICED THE MOON ROOF HAD SHATTERED IN AN OUTWARD DIRECTION. A LARGE QUANTITY OF BROKEN GLASS HAD FALLEN DOWN AND WERE LAYING ON THE MOON ROOF INSIDE COVER. IF I HAD NOT HAD THE COVER CLOSED AT THE TIME OF THE BREAKAGE, I COULD HAVE BEEN COVER IN SMALL PIECES OF BROKEN GLASS WITH POTENTIALLY A DIFFERENT OUTCOME. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT I HAVE HAD THIS YEAR WITH A SHATTERED MOON ROOF. IN MID OCTOBER, I WAS DRIVING A 2014 LEXUS ES300H AND THE MOON ROOF EXPLODED WITH A TREMENDOUS NOISE, ALSO IN AN OUTWARD DIRECTION. I WAS GOING 70 MILES PER HOUR AND WAS NOT IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE NOR WAS I IN ANY TRAFFIC. AGAIN I DID NOT HAVE THE COVER OPEN AND NO GLASS CAME INTO THE VEHICLE. I WILL ALSO ADD THIS COMPLAINT TO THE DATABASE AS A SEPARATE COMPLAINT. *TR

Safety ratings
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings from government crash tests. Ratings can differ by cab style and 2WD/4WD.
NHTSA hasn't published star ratings for this truck. Many heavy-duty pickups aren't included in NHTSA's crash-test program, so this doesn't mean the truck is unsafe.
