Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 105 complaints across the 8 model-year 2019 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2017–2019 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The 2017 Super Duty got an aluminum body on a new steel frame. Engines are the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 6.2L V8 gas.

We counted 3,942 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2017–2019 F-250s and F-350s: 2,905 from diesel trucks and 970 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Front-end shake ("death wobble") dominates: more than half of all complaints (over 2,000), on both diesel and gas trucks.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is still the most expensive known diesel failure.
  • Several recalls cover tailgates, driveshafts, block heaters and rear cameras. Check that they were done.

Front-end shake ("death wobble")

1,532 diesel complaints and 542 gas complaints describe a violent front-end shake, usually after a bump at highway speed. That's the highest share of any truck generation we cover. Owners filed a class-action lawsuit over it in 2019. No recall has been issued, so the fix is up to the owner.

Owners and front-end shops most often report lasting fixes from replacing worn parts, especially the track bar, ball joints and tie rods, and checking alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone frequently only hides it.

When buying: ask whether the shake has ever happened and what was replaced. Have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends. Hit bumps at 50–70 mph on the test drive. A truck with a documented front-end rebuild can be a safer bet than one that's never been touched.

6.7L diesel

  • High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2): when it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, with repairs commonly reported at $8,000 or more. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall covers 2020–2022 trucks, not 2017–2019. Ask for fuel filter records and whether the pump was replaced.
  • Other commonly reported repairs: EGR cooler clogging, exhaust temperature sensors, radiator leaks, and the plastic intercooler pipe cracking under boost.

Recalls to check on these years

  • Tailgate may open by itself (water shorting the electric release switch, recall 19V864000)
  • Driveshaft may fracture on 2017–2018 4x4s (recall 22V880000), and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
  • Engine block heater cord may short and overheat (recalls 18V894000 and 19V278000)
  • 2019 4x4 front axle weld problem (recall 20V576000) and 2019 rear axle shaft on trucks with a locking rear differential (recall 19V688000)
  • Several rear camera recalls

Body and rust

The aluminum body doesn't rust like steel, but check where steel and aluminum meet, along with the steel frame and brake lines.

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • Front-end shake (death wobble)

    Moderate DIY

Signs: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.

Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.

  • High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Easy DIY

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.

Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • 6.7L cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, sudden loss of power, boost or limp-mode codes.

Fix: Replace the plastic cold-side intercooler pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

  • Tailgate opens by itself

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The tailgate drops open while driving or parked, often after rain or a car wash.

Fix: Covered by a Ford recall for the electric release switch.

May be covered free by recall 19V864000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Driveshaft failure risk

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: Vibration from under the truck. A failure can cause loss of drive power.

Fix: Covered by Ford recalls on certain 2017–2018 4x4s and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts.

May be covered free by recall 22V880000 / 22V087000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

My truck has only 13000 miles on it. We were going on vacation pulling our camper. I was doing about 63 MPH when we hit a bump in the interstate and the truck started VIOLENTLY shaking out of control. They cal it the death wobble. After doing some research it seams to be a very common problem that ford will not fully address. They put a bandage over a serious issue. They put me, my family and others in very serious danger. It took everything I had to keep us from going in the ditch. A vehicle with only 13000 miles on it should not experience something like this.

We started to have issues with our back up camera sporadically working, images appearing fuzzy and now the camera has gone completely blank - blue screen. We use this pickup truck to plow in the winter and the camera is important for that. Not having a working back up camera is a safety hazard under normal conditions as well. The issue is that Ford has a recall on "certain" 2019 F-350 trucks with back up camera issues WHICH ARE THE EXACT SAME ISSUES that are happening with our back up camera. This can not be a coincidence. I have called the Ford recall line and spoke to a representative who told me he would document my issue and forward the call information on to his manager. In June 2024, I experienced serious sustained steering wheel oscillation to the point of having to stop the vehicle while traveling over 70 mph to regain control before proceeding on my way. I scheduled an appointment with my dealer (Woody Anderson Ford, Huntsville, AL) after July 4th weekend and was assigned an appointment date of August 9, 2024 at 10:00am. In May 2024, after traveling about 47 mph over a semi-diagonal railroad tracks on level pavement, the steering became violent but was recoverable after reducing speed to under 20 mph. This was the second instance. In March 2024, after transitioning across a section of highway in town at about +/- 45 mph, which the highway had appeared to have been poorly repaired my steering began to oscillate but I was able to recover with no concern. This was the first instance.

Steering suspension has been failing over and over for months. Several severe incidents while driving 70+ mph down the road. Complete loss of control of the vehicle, uncontrollable death wobbles. One incident put me in a ditch, while the others were near collisions. First incident - was no longer able to drive above 30mph without sever death wobble. After “repairs”, recreated the issue at 75 mph and I’m unable to drive safely above 35 mph. Ford has confirmed many parts needing replacement but will not take ownership in replacing them. First incident -$5,300. Second incident - nearly $2500. There were no warning lamps, messages, or any notification of failure prior to incident. The entire front end of these vehicles need to be recalled. There is a class action lawsuit for a reason. I’m unable to sell my truck, or drive it do to costly RECURRING repairs. I’m fearful for my life in my Ford.

Driving down i70 in Colorado and hit a section where there is concrete. One of the cracks in the concrete caused the steering wheel to vibrate uncontrollably until the speed dropped below 50 mph. During the incident braking made the vibration worse and it felt as though the front of the truck was bouncing at a rapid rate. Steering in any direction was nearly impossible. I have a service scheduled to look at this in a few weeks but until then I fear driving as it was a complete loss of control. This happened a few more times on the journey home and seems to be tied to bumps in the road when traveling over 55 mph. This incident happened without warning and did not cause any warning lights to appear. This truck has less than 15k miles on it so I was surprised it would behave this way.

I’ve experienced 3 nearly identical incidents: after driving over bumps in the road or uneven pavement, my F350 went into an uncontrolled wobble, violently shaking, causing total loss of steering control. In each case, the uncontrolled wobble only stopped after I slowed the vehicle to under 15 mph. Because these incidents occurred on major freeways with fast moving traffic, a significant danger was posed to me and my passengers and other drivers. After searching online resources, I read several similar instances of this happening to other F350/250 owners, aka “the death wobble.”

Possibly the new program used to reprogram the computer is either for newer vehicles with different engines and/or transmissions.

This model has the same Bosh CP4 high pressure fuel pump as the recalled models 2020-2022 and in fact being older the catastrophic failure risk is higher due to additional mileage. If this part fails the engine shuts off with loss of steering and braking even when pulling 15-20K pounds. The safety concern for this year is the same or greater then newer models.

Failed component was the upper fuel filter/ fuel filter connecting lines located on top of the 6.7 power stroke engine broke and poured diesel all over the engine and into the valley causing the engine and engine bay to catch on fire while driving down the road. Safety was the fact that our entire truck burnt down and there was extreme risk of loss of life and ended up total loss of property. There have been multiple cases of power strokes from 2011-2026 equipped with the 6.7L power stroke diesel engine having this exact same problem due to the poor placement and inadequate materials to be used in high pressure fuel lines and filters. The vehicle was inspected by insurance and they did determine that was the cause of the fire. There were no warnings, we started smelling something and then smoke began coming through the vents. Pulled over and by then the engine bay was on fire and even the fire extinguisher could not put the diesel out and the entire truck was engulfed in flames in a matter of minutes. Ford needs to fix this issue with the placement of their upper fuel filters and should be held accountable to their customers who have suffered loss for this.

There is currently a recall for the rear camera on this truck that Ford has yet to repair because they say they don't have the replacement parts. This truck has the 360 view package. There are cameras all around this truck and they all are getting cloudy to the point it's hard to see from any of them, not just the rear view camera. I?M DRIVING MY 2019 FORD PICKUP AT NIGHT. THE TRUCK IS EQUIPPED WITH AUTO HIGH-BEAMS AND THEY ARE ENABLED IN THE SETTINGS. IT IS NIGHT AND I DON?T WANT MY HIGH-BEAMS ON SO I TOGGLE THEM OFF BY FLIPPING THE TURN INDICATOR HANDLE. A CAR IS APPROACHING FORM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. AS THE CAR APPROACHES AND PASSES BY ? WHAT SHOULD MY HIGH-BEAMS DO, STAY OFF OR TURN ON? SENSE I TURNED THEM OFF, I WOULD THINK THEY SHOULD SAY OFF BUT THEY DON?T, THEY COME ON. THIS CAN BE FURTHER EXACERBATED IN FOG. WE ALL KNOW THAT DRIVING WITH HIGH-BEAMS IN FOG IS DANGEROUS ? THE DRIVER COULD BE BLINDED BY THE LIGHT REFLECTION OFF THE FOG. THE SAME SCENARIO ABOVE BUT NOW DRIVING IN FOG WITH THE HIGH-BEAMS OFF ? A CAR IS APPROACHING FORM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD AND AFTER PASSING BY AND THE AUTO HIGH-BEAMS TURNS ON AND I BLINDED BY THE REFLECTION - I SWERVE OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A PEDESTRIAN (THAT LAST PART DID NOT HAPPEN, BUT IT COULD). WHO WOULD BE LIABLE IN THIS CASE? MY FORD DEALER SAYS THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY AUTO HIGH-BEAMS AND THAT IS THE WAY THEY ARE DESIGNED TO OPERATE. I THINK THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION AND MUST BE ADDRESS AND RESOLVED. MY TRUCK HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER TWICE TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE LAST TIME THE TRUCK WAS IN THE SHOP (2 WEEKS) FORD ADMITTED THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG AND THAT OTHER OWNERS ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE TOO BUT THEY DON?T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE MY TRUCK HOME AND I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN FORD HAD A SOLUTION. THAT WAS OVER 2 WEEKS AGO (JUNE 5TH). DEALER FOR REPAIR IS WILSON MOTORS IN CORVALLIS OR. *TR
