2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 74 complaints across the 8 model-year 2021 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2022 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel, 7.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

These trucks introduced the 10-speed automatic (10R140) and the 7.3L V8 gas engine ("Godzilla"). The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas carried over.

We counted 949 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2022 F-250s and F-350s: 633 from diesel trucks, 210 from 7.3L gas trucks and 90 from 6.2L gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem: harsh or delayed shifts, and on early diesels, recalls for parts that can fail.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4) on diesels was recalled (24S78).
  • Front-end shake is reported far less than on 2017–2019 trucks (7% of complaints vs. more than half).
  • Several recalls cover the steering column, driveshafts, rear axles and cameras.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems are the top topic: 90 diesel complaints (14%) and 48 7.3L complaints (23%). Owners describe harsh or clunky shifts, delays going into gear after the truck sits, and in some cases transmission replacement under warranty.

Recalls on 2020 diesels:

  • A washer inside the transmission can break apart and stop the truck from holding Park (recall 22V256000).
  • A brittle torque converter part can cause stalling (recall 20V365000).

When buying: let the truck sit, then shift into Drive and Reverse and note any long delay or hard clunk. On the test drive, watch for harsh or hunting shifts. Ask for transmission service and warranty records.

Diesel fuel pump (CP4) recall

Ford recalled 2020–2022 6.7L trucks because deposits from aged biodiesel can make the high-pressure fuel pump fail, causing power loss or stalling (recall 24V957000, Ford number 24S78). The fix is a software update, and Ford issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (recall 26V158000). Fuel pump problems come up in 94 diesel complaints.

When buying: confirm both recalls show as completed for the VIN.

7.3L gas

Most owners are happy with the 7.3L. Transmission complaints lead, and a smaller number of owners report valvetrain (lifter or camshaft) failures. Listen for ticking at idle.

Other recalls to check

  • Steering column upper shaft may come apart on 2020–2021 trucks (recall 25V626000)
  • Driveshaft damage on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
  • Rear axle housing on 2020–2021 F-350 diesels with Dana 275 axles (recall 21V536000)
  • Fuel filter cap leak on 2021 diesels (recall 22V013000)
  • Several rear and 360-degree camera recalls

The high pressure fuel pump failed sending metal shavings through out the entire fuel system. I had no heads up and the failure left me stranded on top of a bridge. I called 911 twice and finally the cops showed up and wrecker towed me off the bridge. Ford is aware of this known issue with this make and model, and even put a recall partial recall / quick fix to increase the flow around the pump to keep it cooler. I had the quick fix recall completed but it did not prevent the failure and me being stranded on a bridge.

Vehicle went into limp mode and we towed it to the dealership. They ran diagnostics and found that the fuel filter was causing a fault for water in the fuel filter. They replaced the fuel filter and ran diagnostics again and it flagged failure for Low pressure fuel pump. They replaced the low pressure fuel pump and reran diagnostics. When they reran diagnostics it flagged for High pressure fuel pump failure and now they are in the process of tearing it down to the point of failure to find out the cause. My vehicles vin was not included in the original recall and believe that it should have been included.

Vehicle Safety Complaint – 2021 Ford F-350 I am submitting this complaint regarding a safety-related failure involving my 2021 Ford F-350. While driving under normal conditions, the vehicle suddenly entered “limp mode,” resulting in a significant and immediate loss of power. Approximately 20 miles later, the vehicle completely shut down, leaving me stranded and requiring the truck to be towed to Gene Messer Ford for diagnosis and repair. The failure created a potentially dangerous situation, as the loss of power limited my ability to maintain safe speeds and respond to surrounding traffic conditions. After the vehicle was delivered to the dealership, it took approximately one week for inspection and an additional two weeks to complete repairs. During the repair process, I was informed that newly installed components—including the fuel rail and two fuel injectors—were defective and required replacement again. This raises concerns about whether the root cause of the failure was properly identified and whether contamination or systemic failure within the fuel system was present. I am also aware of widely reported issues involving high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failures in Ford diesel engines, which can result in catastrophic damage to the entire fuel system, including injectors, fuel rails, and lines. Given the nature of my vehicle’s failure and the components involved, I am concerned that this incident may be related to a broader, known defect. This type of failure—sudden loss of power followed by complete shutdown—poses a serious safety risk, particularly if it occurs at highway speeds or in high-traffic conditions. I am requesting that this complaint be reviewed as part of a broader investigation into potential fuel system defects in Ford diesel trucks. Cold side intercooler boost tube cracked due to constant vibration impact from coolant overflow hose routed directly above and on top of it. Part and vehicle is available for inspection. The split in the boost hose caused me to loose power while attempting to merge onto a road, almost being hit by another vehicle. After research there are multiple other instances of complaints of the same thing happening to others and multiple aftermarket manufacturers producing replacement and upgraded parts with references and warnings of the same thing happening for the last 10 years. No warning lamps or symptoms prior to failure. After failure no warning lamps but could hear an audible hiss. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the dealer or police. I was told by their parts people it is a regular failure and the part costs typically around 200 and they only sold it as a full part and not just the rubber replacement hose althought they are separate parts connected with hose clamps.

At this point, nothing has happened. This is a fuel pump, bio-diesel issue that can cause a lack of power which is a safety risk. This recall has been active for 7 months with no remedy listed, but according to Ford Motor Company will require a software update? The remedy is replacing the fuel pump with a DCR valve. Waiting for the truck to breakdown and potentially leading to loss of life should not be acceptable. They know about the issue, they say no remedy, yet they are continuing to manufacture these vehicles. Are they manufacturing new vehicles with a known safety risk or did they fix the problem on newer model vehicles and just stonewalling current owners?

There is an active recall on my truck and it is affecting my ability to use my truck for work purposes. I am not allowed to used a vehicle with an open, active recall, therefore I cannot use my truck. This recall has been active for more than six months and a remedy has not yet been identified. I am posting a complaint to try and speed up the recall process, which if I understand correctly is a software update for the engine to reduce biodiesel buildup in the engine which "could" cause loss of power.

I was driving my truck home when it completely shut off, I lost all power to everything, including the power steering brakes. When I got home, I did some research on the Internet to see possible causes. Apparently there is a service bulletin for the fuse box having water getting into it from the cowl of the hood, which states it can do exactly what happened to my truck? You can also keep your truck running and not shutting off and just to hold host of other safety issues with the service bulletin. . So I brought my truck in to get diagnosed by Ford and they did indeed say it was the fuse box under the hood that got water into it and shorted it out. Ford would not cover this part even though I have a factory extended warranty, annoying this is a common issue for 2020 to 2022 Ford trucks they issued a recall on expeditions in a couple other vehicles, but not Ford trucks specifically the super duties. How is this? OK that they don’t tell a customer who purchased a vehicle that this could potentially happen and then when it happens, they refuse to cover anything even though it’s their fault why it happened.

On 7 Aug 2022, I lost cruise control, Navigation function (GPS0 and had problems with other elecrical functions on instrument cluster. I took truck to my local ford dealer; they rand Ford diagnostics on truck and it had 3 module errors listed. They cleared the codes and tried to get me to accept the vehicle. Road tested it and there efforts of clearing the codes did not fix any thing. Brought back in shop on 10 Aug 2022. Diagnostics ran again now narrowed it down to APIM failing 3 times in 2 days. Now deallership says they have to order part from California if they have them in stock. This truck only has 22,000 miles on it. Has had multiple failures of equipment for fuel system listing codes P0191 2 and threee times per day. Dealer will NOT attempt to fix that problem. Just says deal with it.

My Ford F350 is experiencing the recall deficiency issued by Ford in January 2025 after repeated calls Ford still is unable or unwilling to fix my vehicle. Ford motor company, and the local dealership have told me workarounds could be performed, but they would be done at my expense. A rearview camera on a pick up truck is used often and is a safety hazard when backing up Blind to low objects.

While driving my 21 F350 my truck would go into limp mode. The climate control stopped working, passenger window stopped, blind spot monitors, along with the mirror. After running forscan it showed every code possible. After an exhaustive search I finally found the main plug under the bed just above the spare tire. The wires inside of the insulation had corroded away to the point it had to be stripped back at least 1/2 inch before getting decent wires that wouldn't crumble when touched. This is a terrible place to put a plug that controls so much.

My setup: truck is level, trailer is 3/8" drop in front, and hitch ball up leaving one hole open from top. After installing product, ensuring proper setup, there is concern for towing safety, as the bottom of the drawbar drop is ~8-1/2" from ground, with reports from others that this setup has on numerous occasions, caused the drop portion of bar to contact pavement under normal towing conditions across the U.S. This has caused concern for possible catastrophic failure of drawbar drop when towing, believing that the welds on drawbar could become weakened and result in a disconnect of tow vehicle and trailer. I contacted the company, asking if they had plans to offer a 0" (would be an actual 3" length drop per their specs on the 6" and 8" drops) drop, or if they could say how much of the excess could be removed/cut from the drop safely. Their response is that there are no current plans to offer other drops and modifying the drawbar would void warranty. Others on various social media have warned of the drop making contact with pavement during the likes of National and State park entries/exits, as well as intersection transitions, etc.. I continued with my order/install, believing they had possibly installed incorrectly, but now see the concern, and do not want to void warranty, and in turn do not want to have a catastrophic failure that could kill someone..
