2020–2022 Ford F-250 / F-350 Super Duty common problems and fixes

Front-end shake drops sharply; the new 10-speed transmission and a diesel fuel pump recall lead the complaints.

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2022 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel, 7.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-07

These trucks introduced the 10-speed automatic (10R140) and the 7.3L V8 gas engine ("Godzilla"). The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas carried over.

We counted 948 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2022 F-250s and F-350s (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once): 631 from diesel trucks, 212 from 7.3L gas trucks and 90 from 6.2L gas trucks, identified by VIN; the rest (15) couldn't be matched to an engine. No complaints had a VIN belonging to another vehicle. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem: harsh or delayed shifts, and on early diesels, recalls for parts that can fail.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4) on diesels was recalled (24S78).
  • Front-end shake is reported far less than on 2017–2019 trucks (66 complaints, 7%, vs. more than half).
  • Dual-rear-wheel F-350s: certain 2021 and 2022 trucks were recalled because a front wheel can come off; NHTSA's records say do not drive them until repaired.
  • Several recalls cover the steering column, a gas-engine fuel pump, driveshafts, rear axles and cameras.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems are the top topic: 71 diesel complaints (11%) and 44 7.3L complaints (21%) mention the transmission. Owners describe harsh or clunky shifts, delays going into gear after the truck sits, and in some cases transmission replacement under warranty.

Recalls on 2020 diesels:

  • A washer inside the transmission can break apart and jam the Park mechanism on certain 2020 diesels; the dealer replaces a gearset (recall 22V256000).
  • A brittle torque converter part can cause stalling on certain 2020 diesels; the dealer replaces the transmission (recall 20V365000).

When buying: let the truck sit, then shift into Drive and Reverse and note any long delay or hard clunk. On the test drive, watch for harsh or hunting shifts. Ask for transmission service and warranty records.

Diesel fuel pump (CP4) recall

Ford recalled certain 2020–2022 6.7L trucks because deposits from aged biodiesel can make the high-pressure fuel pump fail, causing power loss or stalling (recall 24V957000, Ford number 24S78). The fix is a software update, and Ford issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (recall 26V158000). Fuel pump problems come up in 94 diesel complaints (fuel pump, CP4 or high-pressure pump).

When buying: confirm both recalls show as completed for the VIN.

7.3L gas

On 7.3L trucks, transmission complaints lead (44 of 212), and a smaller number of owners report valvetrain (lifter or camshaft) failures. Listen for ticking at idle.

Other recalls to check

  • Front wheel hub extenders on dual-rear-wheel F-350s may not be tight enough, so the front wheel and extender can come off. NHTSA's records say do not drive these trucks until the dealer inspects the extender nuts and tightens them (certain 2021 trucks, recall 21V390000) or, if they're loose, replaces the extender, nuts and hub assembly (certain 2022 trucks, recall 23V758000).
  • Gas engine fuel pump: the low-pressure fuel pump may fail and stall the engine on certain 2021–2022 gas trucks (6.2L and 7.3L); the dealer replaces the pump (recall 25V455000)
  • Steering column upper shaft may come apart on certain 2020–2021 trucks (recall 25V626000)
  • Driveshaft damage on certain gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
  • Rear axle housing on certain 2020–2021 F-350 diesels with Dana 275 axles (recall 21V536000)
  • Fuel filter cap leak on certain 2021 diesels (recall 22V013000)
  • Rear and 360-degree camera recalls on certain trucks (20V575000, 22V644000, 25V048000, 25V686000)
  • Trailer brakes and lights on certain 2022 trucks: while towing, the integrated trailer brake module may lose communication with the truck, so the trailer's brake lights, turn signals or brakes can stop working. The fix is a software update from the dealer or over the air (recall 26V104000).

  • Front wheel can come off a dual-rear-wheel F-350 (recall, do not drive)

    Dealer job

Signs: Often no warning: front wheel hub extender nuts that aren't tight enough can let the wheel and extender separate from the truck.

Fix: **Do not drive the truck until the recall repair is done**, NHTSA's records say. Covered by Ford recalls 21V390000 (certain 2021 F-350s with dual rear wheels: the dealer inspects and tightens the hub extender nuts) and 23V758000 (certain 2022 F-350s with front hub extenders: the dealer inspects the nuts and, if they're loose, replaces the extender, nuts and hub assembly). Both repairs are free; ask the dealer about towing. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.

May be covered free by recall 21V390000 / 23V758000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 10-speed transmission harsh or delayed shifts

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Clunky or harsh shifts, a long delay going into Drive or Reverse after the truck sits, trouble holding Park.

Fix: Check the VIN for recalls 22V256000 (certain 2020 diesels: a gearset is replaced because a broken washer can jam the Park mechanism) and 20V365000 (certain 2020 diesels: transmission replaced for a brittle torque converter part). Otherwise have a dealer read the codes, check the fluid, look for software updates and run the transmission's adaptive relearn; internal repairs or replacement should follow only if diagnosis points to them.

May be covered free by recall 22V256000 / 20V365000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 6.7L fuel pump (CP4) recall

    Dealer job

Signs: Power loss or stalling. Ford found deposits from aged biodiesel can cause the pump to fail.

Fix: Covered by Ford recall 24S78 (a software update), plus a follow-up for trucks repaired incorrectly. Keep up with fuel filter changes too. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.

May be covered free by recall 24V957000 / 26V158000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Steering column upper shaft

    Dealer job

Signs: Loose or clunky steering. In rare cases the shaft can separate.

Fix: Covered by Ford recall 25V626000 on certain 2020–2021 trucks: the dealer inspects the steering column and repairs or replaces the upper shaft as needed. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.

May be covered free by recall 25V626000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 7.3L gas ticking (lifters)

    Best left to a shop

Signs: A ticking noise that gets louder with engine speed, sometimes a misfire.

Fix: Have a shop diagnose it. Some owners report lifter or camshaft failures, which may be covered if the truck is still within warranty.
