Know Your Truck

Privacy Policy

Last updated October 7, 2026

The short version

  • You can look up trucks without an account, and we don't ask who you are.
  • If you use My Garage, we store the truck details you enter so you can see them later. Only you can see them.
  • We don't sell your personal information.
  • You can delete your trucks at any time, or ask us to delete everything.

This policy explains how Know Your Truck ("we", "us") handles information when you use knowyourtruck.com (the "site"). Using the site is also covered by our Terms of Service.

1. Information you give us

  • Account. If you create an account for My Garage, you give us your email address (and anything else you choose to add to your profile). Sign-in is handled by our account provider, Clerk.
  • My Garage. The trucks you save: nickname, make, model, year, trim, engine, drivetrain, VIN, what you paid, the miles and date you bought it, mileage and Kelley Blue Book value updates you enter, maintenance and repair records (including parts, cost and notes), your settings, and any photos you upload. Photos are stored privately and shown only to you.
  • Contact form. Your email address, the topic you pick and your message. These are emailed to us so we can reply.
  • VIN lookups. When you look up a VIN, it is sent to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to decode it. We don't save VINs you look up unless you save the truck to My Garage, though our host's short-lived logs may briefly record the request.

Please don't put other people's personal information, or your phone number, in notes, messages or photos.

2. Information collected automatically

  • Visitor statistics. We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages and buttons get used, where visitors came from, and general details like country, device type and browser. It doesn't use cookies and doesn't identify you.
  • Network address (IP address). Like every website, our host receives your network address with each request and keeps short-lived logs for security and troubleshooting. We also turn your address into a scrambled code (a "hash") to count unique visitors (kept for 30 days) and to stop spam and abuse of the contact form and VIN lookup (kept for up to 1 hour). We don't store the address itself for these.
  • Stored on your device. The inspection checklist remembers your ticks in your browser's storage, and the site remembers whether your visit was already counted. This stays on your device; clear your browser data to remove it.

3. Cookies and ads

We use cookies only where a feature needs them:

  • Sign-in cookies from Clerk keep you logged in to My Garage. The site can't keep you signed in without them.
  • Advertising cookies. When ads are shown, they come from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalized ads in Google's Ad Settings or at aboutads.info. Learn more in how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
  • Amazon links. Some parts links go to Amazon. If you click one, Amazon may set a cookie so we can earn a small commission on qualifying purchases. As an Amazon Associate, Know Your Truck earns from qualifying purchases. It doesn't change what you pay.

Your browser lets you block or delete cookies. Our site doesn't respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals, because there is no common standard for them. You can use the ad settings above instead.

4. How we use information

  • To run My Garage and show you your own trucks, records and photos.
  • To answer your messages.
  • To understand which pages help people, and to fix and improve the site.
  • To keep the site secure and stop spam and abuse.
  • To show ads and parts links that help keep the site free.
  • To follow the law.

We don't send marketing emails. If we add email reminders later, you'll only get them if you turn them on, and every email will have an unsubscribe link.

5. Who we share information with

We don't sell your personal information for money. We share it only with companies that help run the site, and only what they need to do their job. When ads are on, Google may use cookies to show personalized ads, which some state laws treat as "sharing" or "targeted advertising"; you can opt out as described in section 3.

  • Vercel: hosting, visitor statistics and private photo storage
  • Clerk: accounts and sign-in, with a bot check from Cloudflare at sign-up
  • Neon: the database that stores My Garage
  • Upstash: the visitor counter and spam limits (scrambled codes only)
  • Resend: delivers contact form messages to our inbox
  • NHTSA: decodes VINs you look up
  • Google (AdSense) and Amazon (Associates), as described in section 3

We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or if the site is sold or transferred (in which case this policy keeps applying to your information).

6. How long we keep it

  • My Garage information: until you delete it or ask us to delete your account.
  • Contact messages: as long as we need to answer you and follow up, then deleted. Our email providers may keep copies for a limited time under their own policies.
  • Scrambled network address codes: 30 days at most.
  • Our service providers' security logs: according to their own policies, usually days to weeks.

7. Your choices and rights

  • See and change your data: everything you saved is in My Garage, where you can edit or delete trucks, records and photos at any time.
  • Delete your account and everything in it: send a request through our contact form or to sam@knowyourtruck.com using the email on your account. To protect you, we'll email that address to confirm before deleting anything, then delete it within 30 days and let you know when it's done. Deleting your sign-in account from the account menu does not erase your saved trucks, so delete your trucks first or ask us to delete everything.
  • Get a copy of your data, or ask what we have about you: use the contact form.

Depending on where you live (including Texas, California and other states), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, and to opt out of targeted advertising or the sale of your data. We give these choices to everyone, wherever they live. If we turn down a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and we'll respond within 60 days. We won't treat you differently for using your rights.

8. Security

Connections to the site are encrypted, My Garage is only visible when you're signed in, and photos are stored privately. No website is perfectly secure, so we can't promise that information will never be accessed without permission. If a breach affects your information, we'll tell you as the law requires.

9. Children

The site is for people buying and owning trucks and isn't meant for children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

10. Where information is stored

The site and its service providers are based in the United States, and your information is stored and processed there.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also show a notice on the site or email account holders before it takes effect.

12. Contact us
