About Know Your Truck
Know Your Truck is a free tool for anyone buying a used pickup. It covers the pickups sold in the US, from compacts like the Ford Maverick to midsize trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and Honda Ridgeline, half-tons like the F-150 and Ram 1500, heavy-duty diesels and electric trucks like the Cybertruck and Rivian R1T. It's built by a truck owner who wanted one place to check a truck before handing over the money.
Where the information comes from
- Recalls, owner complaints and safety ratings come straight from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Complaints are reports owners file with NHTSA; they aren't verified, and we remove names, phone numbers, emails and street addresses before showing them.
- Maintenance schedules are copied from each manufacturer's official owner's manual, with the manual and page numbers listed under every schedule.
- "What owners should know" notes are written by hand from owner forums, repair shops and NHTSA complaints, with sources linked. They describe patterns owners report, not a guarantee about any one truck.
- Prices come from Kelley Blue Book, which you look up yourself in one click. We don't guess at what a truck is worth.
What it costs
Nothing. The checker and My Garage are free. Some parts links may earn a small commission, which is always disclosed next to the links.
Not affiliated
Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with NHTSA, Ford, Ram, Chevrolet, GMC or Kelley Blue Book. Always have a used truck inspected by a mechanic you trust before you buy, and bring our inspection checklist.
