2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 105 complaints across the 8 model-year 2019 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2017–2019 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The 2017 Super Duty got an aluminum body on a new steel frame. Engines are the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 6.2L V8 gas.
We counted 3,942 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2017–2019 F-250s and F-350s: 2,905 from diesel trucks and 970 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Front-end shake ("death wobble") dominates: more than half of all complaints (over 2,000), on both diesel and gas trucks.
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is still the most expensive known diesel failure.
- Several recalls cover tailgates, driveshafts, block heaters and rear cameras. Check that they were done.
Front-end shake ("death wobble")
1,532 diesel complaints and 542 gas complaints describe a violent front-end shake, usually after a bump at highway speed. That's the highest share of any truck generation we cover. Owners filed a class-action lawsuit over it in 2019. No recall has been issued, so the fix is up to the owner.
Owners and front-end shops most often report lasting fixes from replacing worn parts, especially the track bar, ball joints and tie rods, and checking alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone frequently only hides it.
When buying: ask whether the shake has ever happened and what was replaced. Have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends. Hit bumps at 50–70 mph on the test drive. A truck with a documented front-end rebuild can be a safer bet than one that's never been touched.
6.7L diesel
- High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2): when it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, with repairs commonly reported at $8,000 or more. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall covers 2020–2022 trucks, not 2017–2019. Ask for fuel filter records and whether the pump was replaced.
- Other commonly reported repairs: EGR cooler clogging, exhaust temperature sensors, radiator leaks, and the plastic intercooler pipe cracking under boost.
Recalls to check on these years
- Tailgate may open by itself (water shorting the electric release switch, recall 19V864000)
- Driveshaft may fracture on 2017–2018 4x4s (recall 22V880000), and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
- Engine block heater cord may short and overheat (recalls 18V894000 and 19V278000)
- 2019 4x4 front axle weld problem (recall 20V576000) and 2019 rear axle shaft on trucks with a locking rear differential (recall 19V688000)
- Several rear camera recalls
Body and rust
The aluminum body doesn't rust like steel, but check where steel and aluminum meet, along with the steel frame and brake lines.

Front-end shake (death wobble)
Moderate DIYSigns: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.
Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure
Easy DIYSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.
Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
6.7L cracked intercooler pipe
Easy DIYSigns: A loud pop, sudden loss of power, boost or limp-mode codes.
Fix: Replace the plastic cold-side intercooler pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.
Tailgate opens by itself
Dealer (recall)Signs: The tailgate drops open while driving or parked, often after rain or a car wash.
Fix: Covered by a Ford recall for the electric release switch.
May be covered free by recall 19V864000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Driveshaft failure risk
Dealer (recall)Signs: Vibration from under the truck. A failure can cause loss of drive power.
Fix: Covered by Ford recalls on certain 2017–2018 4x4s and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts.
May be covered free by recall 22V880000 / 22V087000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

While driving at highway speeds, I drove over an expansion joint on a bridge and experienced violent shaking of the vehicle. This included violent shaking of the steering wheel and interior of the truck. I also slowed down to under 30 mph on the highway to stop the shaking. This occurred several other times and, upon researching, found it to be called a "death wobble". I brought my truck to a Ford dealership service center and mentioned the death wobble, which was immediately acknowledged. This cost $1758 out of pocket to fix. From research I have done, it seems all suspension components should not need any type of repair or replacement prior to reaching 50,000 miles, with some components lasting as much as 100,000 miles.

While driving on I-44 at approx. 70 MPH (12:30 PM, bright sunny day, lots of traffic), I hit a bump (not large or deep, just your ordinary bump on a U.S. Interstate), the truck began shaking violently (I'm talking hard to control, teeth rattling, I think we are going to crash). The steering wheel shook violently, my wife was startled, I managed to get it down to abut 45 MPH and the shaking stopped. I was 300 miles from home and it happened at least six more times before I got home.

I was driving on a 1200 mile trip with my 39ft camper. I came off an overpass bridge and my truck felt like both front tires had popped. My steering wheel was bouncing like crazy and luckily I was able to get the vehicle to a stop and off the road. My 2 children and fiancé were also in the car and were lucky not to be killed. After stopping I looked over the truck and trailer and saw nothing wrong. We started to look up the death wobble on this model and it appears many people have also reported it. This truck only has 44k miles on it. I reported it to ford and they have made it clear that they will not be doing anything, other than allowing my extended service plan to replace the same parts if they find an issue. After talking with ford, I was driving my truck again without the trailer and the same thing happened. Luckily I was able to gain control of the truck again. The first instance I was going approximately 70 mph and the second I was around 60 mph. I am now afraid to drive this vehicle with my family and unfortunately I’m still 1000 miles from home.

At around 139,000 miles i started to noticed some intermittent noise coming from the drivetrain. I took it to two different repair shops and was told it was tire noise. over time the grinding noise increased to the point of shuddering and jerking while shifting with no warning lamps showing. At 144,500 miles I contacted my aftermarket warranty and they said to take it to a certified shop to get it checked out. They did not have any preferred shops in my area so I took it to US Automotive. At 145,000 miles the shop contacted the warranty company and proceeded with investigation of the issue. After inspection and tear down they confirmed the transmission had the typical failure for the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions. They turned over there findings and the warranty company which has agreed to the findings and has offered a replacement used transmission with 125,000 miles on it and will also not cover the full cost to install the used unit. I feel that this is fraud and outside of the warranty agreement. I am now paying the expense to put the original transmission back into the truck to try to take it the 2.5 hours back to the dealership which sold me the truck along with the warranty to see what they will do in the matter. I hope it doesn't fail on the highway on the way.

transfer case is shifting from 2 wheel high to 4 wheel high while driving down the highway. it does not engage the the 4wheel drive front hubs when doing this so no indication this is happening. eventually the shift fork breaks and transfer case is then either locked in 4 wheel high without knowing or the transfer case goes to a neutral position and loss of all power. in the my incident i was driving on the interstate and transfer case went to neutral without warning. i was in the middle of 4 lanes of traffic and total loss of movement. i was able to navigate the truck to the side of the interstate safely. however had this been in the middle of rush hour traffic this would most likely been a fatality report with multiple cars involved. After discussions with ford techs i was advised this is an ongoing issue that has not been addressed by ford and they are seeing more and more of these issues, so much so that their transmission techs are backed up for 3-5 weeks with these repairs. seems to me this kind of failure nhtsa would be very aware of and demanding a recall be issued to fix this issue. rather the owners are eating the cost of repair for a blatant safety issue being over looked.

Original Fuel pump stated intermittent long cracks about 35,000 miles. And continues to do so. It seems like FORD uses the all time favorite “ we cannot recreate the issue” in order to send the customer on their way and not take ANY responsibility whatsoever ,WOW! Its rediculous that they don’t want to acknowledge the issue after thousands of customers complain. Our whole family has been riding in this vehicle when the truck experienced the truck lag and turn off at highway speeds. Does someone have to be hurt or killed by this for this company to finally own up? I hope none does!!! Make it right FORD!!! Yet they changes and updated the newer trucks pumps after this, why? My husband was driving our 2019 F250 on the highway at over 75 mph and the truck totally shut down/stalled without warning, could have killed him or another person, lucky he was able to coast to the shoulder and stop, we took to the Ford dealership and was caused by the faulty CP4 fuel pump the truck was made with that has had class action lawsuits and recalls, we are out of pocket over $14,000 to rebuild entire fuel system due to the fact that fuel pump is NOT compatible with our diesel fuel leading to metal shavings build up in fuel system. Our truck still has no recall on this and it should and we should be reimbursed for the extremely expensive and lengthy repair, this is a very dangerous issue. The mechanic also stated he "duplicated" the stall when he go on the highway and hit speeds over 60 mph, thank goodness he is ok as well.

Without warning while I was driving at ~70 mph on the highway the engine in my truck died and left me with no power brakes or power steering in busy traffic. This is a very scary situation to be in. I pulled over and checked the truck best I could. Started it back up and carefully pulled back out onto the highway when it died again. I took it to the closest Ford service center and after diagnosis, they told me the CP4 pump is failing and will need to be replaced at a cost of ~$14,000. My research shows this is a common issue for Ford for a certain year range which my truck is in and they have recently paused the recall addressing the issue so the recall is not showing up when searching my VIN. I would appreciate Ford claiming that this is a safety issue and reimburse me for my out of pocket costs.

The black plastic "roof rails" on the roof of my truck began cracking several months ago - I reported this to the dealership and just got excuses. I showed this to my dealership again on Friday and they said they would look into it. Today while driving the truck the entire roof rail came off and flew into traffic on the highway.. luckily no one hit it or did it cause a crash, etc. However when I did look this issue up on the internet it seems Ford already has an active recall for this type of problem on another model car, however google searching the issue with my truck I found hundreds of complaints on different bulleting boards, and the other problem is apparently Ford is not covering the replacement of this part, and the only way to replace it is to remove the rear window (which has also resulted in MANY shattered windows) Ford did a recall for a similar issue with the Ford Explorer - The Ford reference number for this recall is 21S22. I fell this is an issue that should be addressed and how Ford plans to fix this as I even purchased an extended "platinum warranty" from Ford on this vehicle - - yet now they are refusing to do anything I dont have to pay hundreds of dollars to fix or risk shattering my windows.

Subject: Urgent Safety Concern Regarding Rocker Arm Failure on My Truck I am writing to formally express my concern regarding a critical issue with the rocker arms on my 2019 Ford F250 6.7L Diesel which has caused significant safety concerns. I believe that the failure of these parts poses a serious risk to both the driver and others on the road. Recently, I experienced a failure of the rocker arms while driving. This unexpected breakdown caused engine misfire, loss of power, and unusual noise and severely impacted the performance of the vehicle. It is concerning that such a vital component could fail under normal driving conditions, compromising the engine’s functionality and potentially causing complete engine failure. The failure of the rocker arms is not only costly in terms of repair but also represents a significant safety hazard. Should the issue worsen while driving, it could lead to sudden loss of power, stalling, or even damage to other critical engine components, putting the driver at risk of an accident. This danger is exacerbated if the failure occurs while driving at high speeds or in hazardous conditions. I strongly urge you to investigate the underlying cause of these failures and provide a resolution as soon as possible. Given the serious safety implications, I request a prompt response with information on how this issue will be addressed, whether through a recall, repair, or replacement of the defective parts, and a review of any related safety concerns.

I HAVE ALSO HAD A HANDFUL OF SITUATIONS WHERE IT WILL BEGIN JUST SLIGHTLY AND I WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY SLOW DOWN AND IT WOULD GO AWAY. HOWEVER, IF THERE ARE MULTIPLE BUMPS IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WITH ALMOST 100% PREDICTABILITY. I AM A PRIOR FEDERAL AGENT AND HAVE BEEN TRAINED FOR TACTICAL DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. WITH THAT SAID, THE SHAKING AND LOSS OF CONTROL EXPERIENCED ON A ROUGHLY $75K VEHICLE THAT IS AROUND A YEAR OLD IS NOT ONLY RIDICULOUS FROM A PRODUCT STAND POINT, BUT ALSO, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, IN TERMS OF PASSENGER SAFETY. OUR CHILDREN WERE WITH US ON 2 OF THESE OCCASIONS. THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE RATTLING, OR SHAKING. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE DRIVEN AND IT IS A VIOLENT WOBBLING OF THE ENTIRE TRUCK, NOT JUST THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION AND IS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM AND ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE FOR OTHER VEHICLES NEARBY. IN ONE INCIDENT THE DRIVER OF ANOTHER VEHICLE TO MY LEFT WAS GLANCING OVER AT ME AS I SLOWED DOWN DURING THE VIOLENT SHAKING BACK AND FORTH. THE DRIVER ALSO HAD A VERY CONCERNED LOOK AND EXPRESSION OF PANIC, UNDOUBTEDLY WONDERING WHY A NEW TRUCK WOULD BE WOBBLING UNCONTROLLABLY AT HIGH SPEED DOWN A FREEWAY. TRUCKS IN PARTICULAR SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE BUMPS IN THE ROAD AND ARE GENERALLY CONSIDERED TO BE MORE RUGGED THAN OTHER VEHICLES. THE FACT THAT THE PROBLEM SEIZES AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE IS ALSO PUZZLING.

SHE NO LONGER WANTS TO DRIVE THE TRUCK AND DOES NOT WANT ME DRIVING IT EITHER.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 75 MPH WHEN I WENT OVER A BRIDGE TRANSITION. THE TRUCKS STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY AND I HAD TO SLOW THE TRUCK DOWN TO 20 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC TO GET THE SHAKING TO STOP. THE TRUCKS BRAKES SEEMED TO NOT WORK AT NORMAL LEVELS WHEN SLOWING DOWN, I HAD TO LET OFF THE GAS TO GET THE TRUCK TO SLOW DOWN. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE. I COULD BARELY CONTROL THE TRUCK ENOUGH TO CHANGE LANES TO START GETTING OVER TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. I AM HESITANT TO DRIVE MY TRUCK ANYMORE IF THIS DEATH WOBBLE IS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the electronic tailgate opened without warning. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the same local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The mechanic informed the contact that the key fob button might have been opening the tailgate. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed not to drive with the key fob in his pocket. The approximate failure mileage was 12,500. After last servicing done by Apple Ford I received a phone call from their customer service on a bad review I gave with the safety issue with the tailgate open while driving. What Apple Ford found out from their regional Manager was that the tailgate can be opened with the key fob while the truck is moving from 0 mph to 3.1 mph. I tested this and my finding were as follows: (1st test) Sat in truck while it running, and in Park. Pressed tailgate open on Key fob and tailgate would not open. (Test 2) While sitting in truck with it running and foot on brake pedal, I put truck in Drive and pressed tailgate open on Key Fob and tailgate opened. (Test 3) While in track and it's running, I put into Drive and start to move forward (between 1 and 2 mph). As the truck started roll, I pushed the Tailgate open button on the Key Fob and the tailgate opened. (Test 4) Same as Test 3, but I waited till truck was moving about 15 mph before I pressed the Tailgate open button on the Key Fob, and the Tailgate did not open. NOTE: There is notification lights or sounds on the instrumental panel that indicated that the tailgate is unlocked or open. Where the Safety issue is when towing trailer or even caring something tin the truck bed and when you come to a stop (with Key Fob in pocket) there is the risk of coming to a stop (light) and somehow the Open Tailgate button gets pressed while in my pocket and the tailgate opens and I have no idea that it open. This a SAFETY Issue, Potential of losing load out of truck bed, causing accident when towing camper/trailer.

No warning when it happens, all control is lost and up till now we have been lucky. Truck did this at 20000 miles and again at 32000 miles I currently only have 32250 total miles on this vehicle. Tire size LT285/75 R18 Component/System Failure: The front suspension and steering damper malfunctioned, leading to the "death wobble." This issue also caused excessive tire wear due to the violent vibrations and instability in the steering system. The components are available for inspection, and the worn tires and replaced parts can be provided if necessary. Safety Risk: The excessive tire wear, combined with the loss of steering control due to the wobble, significantly increased the risk of a blowout or loss of traction. At highway speeds, this made it difficult to control the vehicle, posing a serious risk to myself and others on the road. Problem Reproduced/Confirmed: Yes, the problem, including excessive tire wear and steering instability, was reproduced and confirmed by a Ford dealership service center during their inspection. Vehicle/Component Inspection: The vehicle was inspected by the Ford dealership, where they identified the steering and suspension issues that contributed to the wobble and tire wear. No other entities, such as insurance or police, have inspected the vehicle since no accidents occurred. Warning Lamps/Symptoms: There were no warning lamps or messages before the failure. However, prior to the issue, symptoms included rapid and uneven tire wear, increased steering vibrations, and vehicle instability, particularly after hitting bumps or potholes.

I own a 2019 F250 platinum diesel and the last 5 months have been teetering on a very thin line of causing a serious accident. At highway speeds, my truck will start to violently shake after hitting small bumps, bridge entrances/exits, potholes. Pretty much any un-level surface has the potential to cause my truck to violently shake. It’s referred to as Death wobble and for good reason. It feels like all 4 tires had just blown out at highway speeds. It’s very hard to control the vehicle and the only way to fix the issue is to come to a complete stop as fast as you can before you lose control. I have contacted ford several times and they are aware of the issue. There still has been no recall as far as I know. This is completely unacceptable and is risking potential lives. It’s only a matter of time before some is seriously injured or killed from this. Ford put my name down, and I was told in about 2 months they might have the parts to fix it. That just isn’t a good answer. Something needs to be done. Unfortunately I don’t have another vehicle so I am forced to drive this death trap. I’m not sure what to do, and don’t want to get in an accident or end up hurting someone but I have to get to and from work. I refuse to let my family drive in the truck because it’s so unsafe. This doesn’t just happen once in a while. It happens every single time I’m on the freeway which is every day, sometimes multiple times driving to and from work. Im hoping someone can give me some help. I really feel like ford has swept this under the rug and left it’s customers in a terrible position. My truck is one of fords top models and it has under 50k miles. This shouldn’t be happening and they are not too concerned about getting it fixed fast in my opinion. I hope to hear from you soon, thank you.

The housing for the headlights have started to delaminate from the inside of the housing and starting to create a problem with the effective lighting and turn signal area. Where the delaminating is occurring, the lens has a milky , etched, , water spot film like appearance clearly on the inside of the housing. Since it first appeared , it has grown in size on both headlamps and appears that it will continue to grow over time. I first noticed this several months ago and reported it to the Ford dealer. After a lot of back and forth , and much to my dismay Ford is refusing to cover this under its top tier extended warranty even though it is a safety issue . It would have been covered under the initial 3/36 bumper to bumper .
