Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 245 complaints across the 8 model-year 2017 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2017–2019 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The 2017 Super Duty got an aluminum body on a new steel frame. Engines are the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 6.2L V8 gas.

We counted 3,942 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2017–2019 F-250s and F-350s: 2,905 from diesel trucks and 970 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Front-end shake ("death wobble") dominates: more than half of all complaints (over 2,000), on both diesel and gas trucks.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is still the most expensive known diesel failure.
  • Several recalls cover tailgates, driveshafts, block heaters and rear cameras. Check that they were done.

Front-end shake ("death wobble")

1,532 diesel complaints and 542 gas complaints describe a violent front-end shake, usually after a bump at highway speed. That's the highest share of any truck generation we cover. Owners filed a class-action lawsuit over it in 2019. No recall has been issued, so the fix is up to the owner.

Owners and front-end shops most often report lasting fixes from replacing worn parts, especially the track bar, ball joints and tie rods, and checking alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone frequently only hides it.

When buying: ask whether the shake has ever happened and what was replaced. Have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends. Hit bumps at 50–70 mph on the test drive. A truck with a documented front-end rebuild can be a safer bet than one that's never been touched.

6.7L diesel

  • High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2): when it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, with repairs commonly reported at $8,000 or more. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall covers 2020–2022 trucks, not 2017–2019. Ask for fuel filter records and whether the pump was replaced.
  • Other commonly reported repairs: EGR cooler clogging, exhaust temperature sensors, radiator leaks, and the plastic intercooler pipe cracking under boost.

Recalls to check on these years

  • Tailgate may open by itself (water shorting the electric release switch, recall 19V864000)
  • Driveshaft may fracture on 2017–2018 4x4s (recall 22V880000), and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
  • Engine block heater cord may short and overheat (recalls 18V894000 and 19V278000)
  • 2019 4x4 front axle weld problem (recall 20V576000) and 2019 rear axle shaft on trucks with a locking rear differential (recall 19V688000)
  • Several rear camera recalls

Body and rust

The aluminum body doesn't rust like steel, but check where steel and aluminum meet, along with the steel frame and brake lines.

  • Front-end shake (death wobble)

    Moderate DIY

Signs: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.

Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.

  • High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Easy DIY

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.

Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • 6.7L cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, sudden loss of power, boost or limp-mode codes.

Fix: Replace the plastic cold-side intercooler pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

  • Tailgate opens by itself

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The tailgate drops open while driving or parked, often after rain or a car wash.

Fix: Covered by a Ford recall for the electric release switch.

May be covered free by recall 19V864000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Driveshaft failure risk

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: Vibration from under the truck. A failure can cause loss of drive power.

Fix: Covered by Ford recalls on certain 2017–2018 4x4s and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts.

May be covered free by recall 22V880000 / 22V087000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

2017 F250 99k miles . got off the interstate and went to turn and the steering wheel immediately came loose. I had to press down while turning. I brought it to a repair shop and it was stated that it looked as if was glued and the locknut was never tightened . This could have been catastrophic. I didn't bring it to the dealer because it would take three days to look at it.

All factory setup. Vehicle will get death wobble due at highway speeds. There was a recall for steering related issues.

    • Filed Jan 2026

2017 Ford F250 issue is with the steering damper and the reported "death wobble" caused by the faulty part. In 2019, on several occasions driving on the highway I experienced uncontrollable shaking in the front end. Each time, I had to slow my speed down to under 10 MPH for the wobble to stop. When I took the vehicle to Ford dealer, they knew what the issue was and told me to properly fix the issue I needed to purchase and Aftermarket part, that Ford did not have the proper part to fix this. This comment was straight from the Ford Service Tech. I paid for the fix and up to 2025 the problem was gone. Starting in November 2025 the same issue is back. Each time of the problem, either my wife or I were traveling on a highway, traveling between 65 - 75 MPH. It takes both hands firmly holding the wheel simply to hang on until the truck can be slowed to, again, under 10 MPH. This puts us in a bad situation when on the major highways around the Ft. Worth Texas area. This time the Ford dealer charged ~$600 to fix the steering and re-align the front end. And once again, the Ford Service Tech said this is only a temporary fix and we would be back!! This has been a well known and documented issue with these trucks but Ford has refused to issue a total recall. I guess in this day it takes "confirmed body counts" before recalls actually happen. Why does it take the loss of life for this to happen? Ford should be proactive and fix the issue before deaths occur...but this would be expensive and bottom line financial statements to share with Wall Street take precedence over peoples lives.

I was travelling back home at about 65mph on the highway in my 2018 ford f250 crew cab and my left front wheel hit a small bump in the road. The whole truck started to shake violently and I couldn't hold the steering wheel as it was also shaking uncontrollably. I thought at first that I had had a puncture but the truck wasn't leaning as such. The wheels where simply shaking from side to side very fast. I hit the hazard lights and gently brakes down to about 30 mph, pulled over to the side of the ride gently to avoid the risk of flipping over and stopped. When I started up again, the wobbling had stopped. I later looked up the.probable cause and learned about the (infamous) death wobble which several people have experienced. It was truly scary as everything was shaking and I couldn't control the steering wheel. If it would have happened on a bend I would have gone straight over and flipped the truck as I wouldn't have been able to slow down in a straight line to stop the wobbling and shaking... This is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed as people will die...

This issue with the truck has been going on since last year can be driving down the highway at a speed of 55 to 70 mph depending on the speed limit and the truck will start jerking and bucking to the point where it will almost sling you through the windshield and the reduced engine power will come on and you have no power at all taking it to the Ford dealership to get the powertrain control module reprogrammed I was informed that would fix the issue it did not there was a recall on the cp4 high pressure fuel pump that was manufactured by Bosch i have one of those fuel pumps in the ford company said 2017 f250 super duty diesel wasn't apart of the recall why did they all of a sudden do a recall to have the power train control module programmed on my 2017 Ford f250 super duty diesel that is the same thing that is called for in the recall of the high pressure cp4 fuel pump on other models this is becoming an issue because i have the exact same fuel pump made by Bosch and the same symptoms are happening as to the recall of the fuel pump in other year models I took my truck to the dealership to have it reprogrammed and it is still doing the same thing the day that I took it over there and they do nothing about it this could cause someone's life to be on the line when driving this particular year make and model and they do not want to recognize that it's coming from the cp4 high pressure fuel pump

My vista sunroof on my 2017 F250 Super Duty Platinum made a popping noise and failed to open when I attempted to open it. It became bound to the rear glass which in turn commenced to fracture across the entire piece. Fortunately no one was injured as this glass could have dropped large shards into the cab. I an concerned that this could still present a problem when driving and is an imminent safety hazard. I found out that this is a common issue that Ford is aware of on the F series trucks with the panoramic roofs and it is due to the rail/track system fracturing on the front glass (sunroof) and will not replace/repair it because it is not under warranty. This a safety hazard for passengers due to a manufacturer defect and poor design and needs to be replaced immediately to avoid any risks.

On [XXX], I went to start my 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty (6.2L) and found that it would crank but not start. On [XXX], I had the truck towed to a local certified repair shop. They diagnosed that the fuel pump control module overheated and melted into the fuse box, causing extensive electrical damage and frying the main wire harness that connects to the fuse box. This is not something that should happen on a well-maintained vehicle with only 75,688 miles. I paid $2,600 for repairs out of pocket. The shop also informed me that this type of electrical failure could have easily caused a fire, especially since the truck was parked in my garage at the time of failure. This appears to be a serious electrical defect and a potential fire hazard. I’m requesting that Ford and NHTSA investigate this issue for possible recall or safety action. During the course of the region cycle, vehicle began to smoke excessively and realizing this wan not normal, I was able to yield to the right shoulder of the roadway. Almost immediately the vehicle ignited on fire and completely burned to the ground. The fire appeared to have commenced in the engine compartment, driver side near the firewall. The location of which appears to be consistent with reports of fuel filter failures I have read about in the past. The resulting fire ignited nearby brush which burned several hundred feet of brush and resulted in the spillage of diesel fuel and coolant which combined from the resulting melting of the coolant system and fuel tank and lines. This incident put both me and surrounding communities at risk, particularly from the resulting fire and HAZMAT spill. The vehicle was in good running condition prior to this incident. The incident was investigated by the Templeton California Highway Patrol.

I am reporting a serious safety issue involving my 2017 Ford F-250 diesel truck. While towing a 34-foot fifth wheel trailer and traveling from [XXX] to [XXX] , the vehicle experienced a sudden and dangerous failure near [XXX] . The engine warning light appeared, the vehicle went into low power mode, and then completely shut down on the highway. This created a serious safety hazard, particularly while towing a large trailer at highway speeds. The vehicle was towed to a repair facility where it was determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had catastrophically failed. The pump had developed a significant crack and released metal debris throughout the entire fuel system. This required extensive repairs, including: - Replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump - Replacement of fuel lines - Full fuel system cleaning, including the fuel tank The total repair cost exceeded $14,000 USD (near $20,000 CAD). The mechanic indicated that this type of failure should not occur under normal operating conditions. Additionally, the Ford parts dealer advised that the failed fuel pump could be returned for credit, suggesting the failure may not be consistent with normal wear and tear. This failure occurred suddenly, without warning, and resulted in a complete loss of power while driving, which I believe represents a significant safety concern. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential safety-related defect involving high-pressure fuel pumps in diesel vehicles. This past year I experienced catastrophic failure with my Bosch, CP4 fuel pump in my 2017 Ford F250 with a 6.7 L diesel. Recalls have been published by Ford, but not beyond a 2018 vehicle. After seeing metal fragments in my fuel water separator, I was forced to flush my entire fuel system, replace the CP4 fuel pump with a CDR high pressure pump (replacement), flush the entire fuel rail system and replace my fuel injectors. This repair cost me approximately $13,000. I find it difficult to understand why my 2017 vehicle was not included in the recall when it had the defective item as the later models had. The truck has 129,000 miles on it currently. Certainly, these are not excessive miles given the year of the vehicle. I would like to know what can be done for older models(the Bosch CP4 fuel pump goes all the way back to 2011). Thank you for your consideration and attention to this

On Tuesday, [XXX], at approximately [XXX] PM, I was driving southbound on [XXX] near Coalinga, CA, when my truck suddenly experienced a failure. I noticed smoke in the side mirror and asked my passenger to confirm. Moments later, a "Low Fuel Pressure" message appeared on the dashboard, and smoke began coming from the hood. I immediately pulled over and attempted to pop the hood, at which point flames erupted from the engine bay. The fire quickly spread, fully engulfing the vehicle within minutes. Emergency responders, including Cal-Fire and CHP, arrived on the scene. The truck was towed by Cal-State Towing Service in Huron, CA. The Fire Captain on site provided an incident card, but the full fire report is expected to take at least a week to obtain. There were no prior indications of mechanical issues before this incident, and no recent repairs or modifications to the fuel system or engine. However, I recently became aware of an ongoing NHTSA investigation into fuel leaks and fire risks in Ford Super Duty trucks equipped with the 6.7L diesel engine (TFL Truck Report). The investigation highlights a potential issue with fractures in the secondary fuel filter housing, which could lead to fuel leaks and fire hazards. Given that my truck displayed a Low Fuel Pressure warning immediately before catching fire, I strongly suspect this failure may be related to the issue under investigation. The truck is currently in tow yard storage and is available for inspection upon request. This incident posed a serious safety risk to myself, my father and others on the roadway, and I believe it warrants further examination by NHTSA. Owner went inside the house, came back out 5 minutes later to find the vehicle had rolled unattended backwards causing the trailer to jack knife. The result was damage to the truck and trailer. This was very lucky considering another vehicle could have come over the hill and hit the truck and trailer and people could have been injured. This is the third instance of this truck rolling unattended. I have contacted Ford, written complaints. I spoke with my local dealership and they informed me that this is a common issue with these trucks normally caused by the transmission drum, valve body and/or solenoids. There were no warnings before this started and it's worse when the transmission is cold. As the transmission gets hotter the issue seems to get better but will suddenly hard downshift without warning.

The dealership I had gotten it from worked on the truck and replaced the computer and it still popped up the same code. Hadn't had the truck 3 weeks when the first incident happened. Then they had it for 3monhs and got it back saying it was fixed and it done it again on my way home from work. The transmission jumps gears while driving without warning or anything. I JUST RESEARCHED THE VIOLENT SHAKE OF MY FRONT END THAT ALMOST CAUSED ME TO HIT THE VEHICLE NEXT TO ME. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 60 MPH AND DROVE OVER A BUMP ON THE ROAD AND MY STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLE. I IMMEDIATELY STOMPED ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AS FAST AS I COULD. I WAS DRIVING IN THE FAST LANE AND SLOWED TO ABOUT 20 MPH BEFORE THE SHAKE STOPPED. I WAS LUCKY NOT TO HIT THE VEHICLE NEXT TO ME SINCE THE TRUCK WENT RIGHT OF CENTER. THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME ALMOST REAR ENDED ME SINCE I SLOWED DOWN SO QUICKLY LIKE YOU WERE GIVING SOMEONE A BRAKE CHECK BEHIND YOU. I HAVE OWNED THIS 2017 F250 LESS THAN A MONTH. IF I KNEW ABOUT THE DEATH WOBBLE I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. I AM NOW SERIOUSLY CONCERNED TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK AND NOW I CAN NOT ALLOW MY 17 YR OLD SON DRIVE IT IF NEEDED. I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE ARE OVER 1,200 COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND FORD HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THIS IS MY 6TH FORD TRUCK BUT FIRST F250 AND MY LAST. I WILL MOST LIKELY GO TO GMC OR DODGE FOR A 2500 SERIES TRUCK. I TRAVEL FOR WORK AND THIS PROBLEM REALLY WORRIES ME TO DRIVE AT 70/75 MILES PER HOUR ON THE FREEWAY. I BELIEVE AT THE HIGHER SPEEDS IT IS A GOOD CHANCE LOSS OF CONTROL WILL HAPPEN IF THE DEATH WOBBLE OCCURS. THESE TRUCKS COST A LOT OF MONEY AND NO ONE SHOULD EVER HAVE TO DRIVE A UNSAFE VEHICLE. IF I COULD JOIN THE JOINT LAW SUIT AGAINST FORD I WOULD. MAYBE ANOTHER GROUP OF F250 & F350 OWNERS CAN START A CLASS ACTION SUIT AS WELL AGAINST FORD. IT WILL BE A VERY SAD DAY WHEN WE ALL FIND OUT A DEATH HAS OCCURRED AND COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED WITH A RECALL. IF YOU GOOGLE DEATH WOBBLE YOU WILL NOT PURCHASE A F250 OR F350. I REALLY HOPE FORD TAKES CARE OF THIS SINCE I REALLY LIKE THE LOOK OF THE TRUCK.

I RAPIDLY DECELERATED AND THE VIOLENT SHAKING STOPPED AFTER I SLOWED THE VEHICLE TO APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH. THE SHAKING WAS SO VIOLENT I WAS SECONDS AWAY FROM VEERING OFF THE ROAD INTO THE TREES. THERE IS A TECHNICAL BULLETIN FROM FORD ABOUT THIS ISSUE, BUT IT IS NOT A RECALL. SOMEONE IS LIKELY GOING TO DIE FOR WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A DESIGN AND/OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT. I WAS ALMOST IN A WRECK BECAUSE THE TRUCK WOULD NOT STOP SHAKING AND THE STEERING WAS IMPACTED. THE DASH, MIRRORS, SEATS, AND LITERALLY EVERYTHING ON AND IN THE TRUCK WAS VIOLENTLY VIBRATING AND SHAKING. HAD TO REDUCE SPEED TO ABOUT 30MPH AND THE SHAKE FINALLY SUBSIDED, AFTER MULTIPLE CARS COULD TELL SOMETHING WAS WRONG AS WELL - AND THEY WERE SEEING THIS HAPPEN FROM OUTSIDE THE TRUCK! THIS HAS HAPPENED PREVIOUSLY, TO A LESSER EXTENT IN DECEMBER WHICH CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD AND THE ISSUE SUBSIDED QUICKER THAN THIS TIME. NOT SURE WHAT THE ISSUE IS BUT IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY INJURED ME OR OTHER DRIVERS DUE TO A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE DROPPED MY TRUCK OFF AT MAC HAIK FORD IN PASADENA, TX. IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY - ABOUT 25K MILES ON THE TRUCK.

The airbag located in the steering wheel has cracked the steering cover and is exposed. If this were to deploy prematurely or while driving it would pose serious safety risks. I have contacted Ford corporate in regard to this and their only suggestion was to take the vehicle to our dealer to have this replaced, at my own cost, which is missing the point of this needing to be reported and/or recalled as it appears to be a common problem with Ford trucks in online communities. It is a safety hazard and not a warrantied repair. As previously stated I have not taken to the dealership as I want it to be reported/recalled. There was no warning of this issue and it occured Saturday 6/10/23
