2010 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 62 complaints across the 8 model-year 2010 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2008–2010 · 6.4L Power Stroke diesel, 5.4L V8 and 6.8L V10 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
Most of these trucks have the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel, the first Ford diesel with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Gas versions use the 5.4L V8 or 6.8L V10, which have the same notes as our 2005–2007 page.
We counted 859 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2008–2010 F-250s and F-350s, with 2008 accounting for two thirds of them. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Front-end shake ("death wobble") and worn steering parts are the most frequently reported problems (133 and 86 complaints).
- 6.4L radiator leaks are the most common engine complaint.
- Fuel in the oil from DPF cleaning cycles is a well-known 6.4L trait. Check the oil level and condition.
- Up-pipes and EGR coolers are other commonly reported 6.4L repairs.
Front-end shake ("death wobble")
About 1 in 6 complaints describe a violent front-end shake after bumps. Owners most often report that replacing worn parts, especially the track bar, ball joints and tie rods, fixes it for good, while a new steering stabilizer alone only hides it.
6.4L diesel
- Radiator leaks come up in 53 of the 581 6.4L complaints. Repair shops describe leaks along the radiator's upper seam. Look for wet spots or white crust.
- Fuel dilution. When the DPF cleans itself ("regenerates"), some fuel can wash past the piston rings into the oil and raise the oil level. Lots of short trips and idling make it worse.
- Up-pipes that crack and leak exhaust, and EGR coolers that clog or crack. The 6.4L has two EGR coolers.
- Ford recalled some 2008 6.4L trucks for exhaust filter overheating (recall 07V139000).
When buying: pull the dipstick. Oil that's over full or smells of diesel is a red flag. Check for coolant leaks around the radiator, and for exhaust soot on the engine around the turbo. Ask whether the emissions system has been removed ("deleted"); that can cause inspection and legal problems.
Other things to check
- 2008 4x4 trucks with a long wheelbase and two-piece driveshaft were recalled (recall 08V191000). Confirm it was done.
- Check the cab corners, rocker panels, radiator support, frame and brake lines for rust.
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop that knows the 6.4L.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 2010 Ford F-250 Super Duty. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Front-end shake (death wobble)
Moderate DIYSigns: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.
Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.
6.4L radiator leak
Hard DIYSigns: Coolant loss, wet spots or white crust on the radiator, especially along the upper seam.
Fix: Replace the radiator. Shops also commonly check the thermostats, since a faulty bypass thermostat can stress the radiator.
6.4L fuel in the oil
Easy DIYSigns: Oil level rises over full, or the oil smells of diesel.
Fix: Check the oil level often and change oil more frequently if it climbs. Long highway drives let the exhaust filter clean itself with less fuel washing into the oil. Avoid long idling.
6.4L cracked up-pipes
Hard DIYSigns: Exhaust smell or ticking under the hood, soot around the turbo, slow turbo response.
Fix: Replace the up-pipes with new or upgraded pipes and gaskets.
6.4L EGR cooler failure
Best left to a shopSigns: Coolant loss, white smoke, EGR codes.
Fix: Replace the EGR cooler(s). The 6.4L has two, and it's a large job.
Worn ball joints and tie rods
Hard DIYSigns: Clunks over bumps, wandering steering, uneven tire wear, or play when you rock a lifted front wheel.
Fix: Replace worn ball joints and tie rod ends, then get an alignment. Ball joints need a press tool, which many parts stores lend out.

Recalls
A recall doesn't mean a truck still has the problem. Enter the truck's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a dealer to see whether the repair was done.
Steering
Dec 2020 · #20E090000Icon Vehicle Dynamics, LLC (Icon) is recalling all 05-UP FSD 2.5 Centerline Stabilizer Kits with part number 65050. The kits were sold as an accessory for certain 2005-2021 Ford F-250 4X4 and F-350 4X4 pickup trucks. The foam ring inside the stabilizer "through shaft" may block the piston ports, possibly causing the steering to lock up.
Risk and fix
Risk: If the steering locks, it can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Icon will notify owners, and dealers will install a new shock assembly with a revised foam ring and steel support disc, free of charge. The recall began December 21, 2020. Owners may contact Icon customer service at 1-951-689-4266.

2010 F250 repeatably experienced violent shaking of the front wheels and steering at highway speeds (commonly referred to as "death wobble"). This shaking has been so violent that I had no control of the vehicle steering and had to abruptly brake and slow to a near stop in 75 mph traffic! Vehicle has 71K miles and has been very well maintained and garage kept (single owner). Substantial repairs have been made to replace steering dampener, track bar, drag link, and steering gear. Technician explained that all of these parts were severely damaged from the death wobble.

I have a 2010 Ford,F250 Super Duty 4wd. After hitting a "transition" bump on a feeder road to a hiway I encountered violent shaking of my front end. I was accelerating to hiway speed of 70mph but I was almost forced off the road at 60 so I slowed to 50mph. The front end was still shaking so I pulled over to inspect the wheels because it felt like they were loose. Nothing was obvious so I got back on the freeway and could not drive over 40 then. Even still it shook. I was about 60 miles from home on Saturday. I took the truck to my local shop and he informed me that it was the "death wobble"! I was unaware of this "safety issue" until then. There were 3 components on the front end that were replaced and the cost was $811.50!! There were no warning lights or buzzers before the incident and if I was not a cautious driver I would have certainly run off the road and, or, injured. No photos were taken or police reports but I do have an invoice. I feel something should be done about this especially if Ford is aware of the issue. If safety is a concern of theirs, they certainly do not live up to it! Along with the money and stress it is costing people. Ive called Ford CS and they told me there's nothing they can do.

The vehicle has been experiencing a death wobble in the front suspension for about 2 years. I have had regular maintenance of the vehicle at a local ford dealership. The first incident occurred shortly after I had the vehicle serviced for oil change and tire rotation. I was driving about 75 mph on the I-5 freeway and ran over a transition in the road from blacktop to cement, the entire front end began to violently shake. I slowed down and pulled over and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary, so I continued on. About 30 miles further, I hit a small pothole in the road with the driver side front tire, and the entire front end again began to violently shake. I slowed down and moved to the right, and when I reached about 40 mph, the shaking stopped. I took the vehicle to capistrano ford and they said some bushings were worn, so they replaced them. When I picked the vehicle up and started driving on the freeway, the violent shaking occurred again. I returned the vehicle to capistrano ford, and they said they could not duplicate the problem. I had them rotate the tires back to their original positions and did not have another incident for several months. Then, the violent shaking occurred once again, so I returned the vehicle to capistrano ford, and had the shocks replaced. They inspected the suspension but did not recommend any other parts be replaced. The violent shaking has continued to occur, and has recently become more frequent. The vehicle has about 106,000 miles, is in excellent condition and has been regularly maintained only at capistrano ford. I am inputting the date of the most recent incident, although it first occurred about 2 years ago.

Driving down the road, hit a bump in road, and front end began to shake so hard that I lost control of the truck and ended up on side of the road. Began to try and drive the truck home (less than 5 miles away), it began to shake 2 more times. Called dealership, they stated it was a "Death Wobble"...but they don't fix them or correct the issue. I would have to pay for it myself.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2010 F-250 SD, 6.4L PICKUP. I WAS DRIVING ALONG A CITY SURFACE STREET AND LOOKED IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR, AND NOTICED A THICK WHITE CLOUD BANK BILLOWING BEHIND ME, GENERATING FROM MY EXHAUST PIPE. I ABOUT HAD A HEART ATTACK, THINKING MY TRUCK JUST BLEW AN ENGINE. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE IT BACK TO HAVE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO FIX IT. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATED THAT,? FORD IS AWARE OF THE SMOKING ISSUE AND CONSIDERS THIS NORMAL WITH NO FIX?. THEY MENTIONED THIS COULD BE CAUSED BY MOISTURE CONDENSATION. THAT DOESN'T SEEM FEASIBLE SINCE HERE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THERE?S MOISTURE IN THE AIR JUST ABOUT ALL YEAR LONG. THE TRUCK CONTINUES TO BLEACH THIS HEAVY, THICK SMOKE, ABOUT EVERY 20 TO 40 MILES, FOR APPROX. 45-120 SECONDS. I?M CONCERNED ABOUT THIS BEING A PUBLIC HAZARD/SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN IT BILLOWS, I CAN SEE CARS PEELING OUT FROM BEHIND ME, THINKING MY TRUCK IS ON FIRE. I'VE EVEN HAD PEOPLE PULL ALONG SIDE MY TRUCK AND GIVE ME AN EARFUL, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OBSCENE GESTURES. IT'S IRONIC THAT THIS 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE HAS BEEN ADVERTISED AS CLEAN BURNING, LESS POLLUTION, IF A POLICE OFFICER OBSERVES THIS, I COULD GET A TRAFFIC CITATION. WE HAVE EXPRESSED OUR SAFETY CONCERNS AS WELL AS CONCERN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND RE-SALE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP, (NOT TO MENTION HOW EMBARRASSING THIS IS WHEN THE TRUCK BILLOWS). MANY PHONE CONVERSATIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE WITH THE SERVICE DEPT. AS WELL AS BRINGING THE TRUCK BACK AND WE STILL CANNOT GET THIS RESOLVED. IT'S A HEAD SCRATCHER TO ME AS TO WHY THE SALESMAN DIDN'T MENTION THIS ISSUE WHEN WE FIRST LOOKED AT THE TRUCK, SURELY HE SHOULD KNOW THE PRODUCT HE IS TRYING TO GET RID OF. *TR

EGR VALVES WENT OUT AND STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF A INTERSECTION WITH A 30 FOOT TRAILER, WHICH THAT HAPPENED TWICE, FORD SAYS WELL THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ANY OTHER VEHICLES THAT THEY HAVE DEALT WITH. THIS HAS RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES, WHICH CAUSES TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND COULD POSSIBLY RESULT IN MAJOR ISSUES OR ACCIDENTS, TRUCK WAS PURCHASED TO HAUL A TRAILER AND WE DO NOT TRUST IT AT ALL SINCE IT HAS BROKE DOWN SO MANY TIMES. WHEN YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR LOADED OR UNLOADED IT HAS A HESITATION BEFORE IT GOES, SOMETIMES IT TAKES AWHILE TO GET UP TO SPEED, FUEL INJECTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ALSO. WHEN THE CLEANING EXHAUST SYSTEM IS ON IT STARTS TO DECELERATE AND YOU LOSE A GOOD AMOUNT OF POWER. *KB

YESTERDAY, I NOTICED A STRONG BURNING SMELL LIKE A CLUTCH WAS GOING OUT, ONLY PROBLEM IS MINE IS AN AUTOMATIC. TRUCK ONLY HAS 50K MILES AND I STARTED HAVING THE TAPPING NOISE AROUND 32K MILES. *TR

WE HAVE A 2010 FORD F250 SUPERDUTY DIESLE WITH APPROX 105K MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE CITY HIGHWAY (ROUTE 15 SOUTH IN WILLIAMSPORT, PA) AT APPROXIMATELY 64 MPH I WAS ON A BRIDGE THAT THE ROAD TURNED SLIGHTLY TO THE LEFT TO MERGE INTO ANOTHER HIGHWAY AND WHEN I HIT THE EXPANSION JOINT THE TRUCK STARTED TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE OUT OF CONTROL BOUNCING THE TRUCK TOWARD THE RAIL GUARD. I APPLIED THE BREAKS TO SLOW THE TRUCK DOWN. IT TOOK ALL THE STREGNTH I HAD IN MY ARMS TO KEEP THE TRUCK ON THE ROAD. WHEN AT APPROX 35MPH THE SHAKING FINALLY SUBSIDED. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN OUR TRUCK. MY HUSBAND HAS EXPERIENCED IT A FEW TIMES. AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT THERE IS A FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-2268 FOR THIS AND IT IS BEING CALLED THE DEATH WOBBLE. WE ARE TAKING OUR TRUCK IN TOMORROW TO BE SERVICED AT OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER, BUT THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE AND SHOULD BE A FORD RECALL. EVERYTHING I AM READING ONLINE IS POINTING TO A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING LINKAGE DAMPER/ADJUST ASSEMBLY AND CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE AXLE AND THE BEARINGS IN THE HUB ASSEMBLY. BELOW ARE THE PART NUMBERS THAT ARE LISTED IN THE FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-2268: PART NUMBERDESCRIPTIONQUANTITY HC3Z-3E651-D STEERING LINKAGE DAMPER1 5C3Z-3B440-EEE 1 ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY2 5C3Z-3B440-DDD 3/4 ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY2 5C3Z-3B440-CCC 1/2 ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY2 5C3Z-3B440-BBB 1/4 ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY2 F2TZ-3A049-A CASTLE NUT2 W525288-S437 COTTER PIN2 I REALLY FEEL THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED WITH FORD AND PUT IN AS A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. WHILE DRIVING MY 2010 FORD F250 SUPER DUTY ON THE HIGHWAY I DROVE OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. IT FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO FALL APART WHILE STILL IN MOTION. I TRIED TO HIT THE BRAKE BUT THAT SEEMED TO EXACERBATE THE PROBLEM. I TRIED TO ADJUST THE STEERING WHEEL IN HOPES TO ALIGN SOME DEFUNCT COMPONENT. NOTHING SEEMED TO HELP EXCEPT TO LET OFF THE GAS AND ATTEMPT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND AVOID A POTENTIAL FATAL ACCIDENT. THIS REALLY WAS A FRIGHTENING EVENT, IT WAS ALL I COULD DO TO MAINTAIN A SAFE DISTANCE AROUND ME SO NOT TO COLLIDE WITH OTHER DRIVERS.

*KB

I WAS DRIVING 75 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE 69 BETWEEN SHEPPARD AND CLEVELAND TEXAS AND THE VEHICLE STALLED AND DIED IN THE INSIDE LANE. WHEN I TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE IT WAS FLASHING A GREEN WRENCH AND WOULD ONLY RESTART IN A REDUCED POWER MODE. FORD DEALER DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS CRANK CASE OVERFILLED BY 13 QUARTS DUE TO FAILED HPFP. THIS WAS A NEW FORD ENGINE WITH ONLY 13,000 MILES ON IT WITH A 24 MONTH UNLIMITED MILEAGE WARRANTY. DEALER ADVISED THAT FORD WILL COVER HPFP REPLACEMENT BUT WILL VOID BALANCE OF WARRANTY IF I DO NOT PAY $7,000 TO REPLACE ALL OTHER FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM COMPONENTS. FORD BASES DETERMINATION ON UPLOADED PHOTOS FROM DEALER THAT THEY CLAIM SHOW EVIDENCE OF "RUST" WHICH THEY CLAIM INDICATES FUEL CONTAMINATION. THEIR PHOTOS WERE OF THE HPFP STRAIGHT OFF THE TRUCK AND COVERED WITH DEISEL. AND WHAT THEY CLAIM IS RUST IS ACTUALLY LIGHT REFRACTION OF THE DEISEL (PHOTO LABELED HPFP WITH DEISEL) I WITNESSED BOTH THE REMOVAL AND THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE PUMP. AT THAT TIME I ASKED THAT THE DEISEL BE WIPED OFF BEFORE THE PHOTOS BUT WAS TOLD THAT THAT WAS NOT ALLOWED. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY AND RETRIEVED THE PUMP FOR INDEPENDENT TESTING FOR RUST AND TOOK PHOTOS AFTER WIPING OFF THE DEISEL. PHOTO LABLELED WITHOUT DEISEL FORD RECOMMENDED VERBALLY THAT I CHECK TO SEE IF MY AUTO INSURANCE COVERS CONTAMINIATED FULE BUT THEN REFUSED TO GIVE ME ANYTHING IN WRITING, INSTEAD REFERRING ME TO FORD OGC REVEIWING THE INTERNET I SEE THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED EVENT. THESE BOSCH HPFP HAVE BEEN FAILING FOR YEARS. IT IS A DISGRACE THAT FORD IS EXTORTING - COERCING ME TO PAY FOR THE BALANCE OF THE INJECTION SYSTEM WHILE ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FAILED HPFP.
