2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 178 complaints across the 8 model-year 2015 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2011–2016 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel · Updated 2026-10-01
These notes cover the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. If the truck has the 6.2L gas engine, the engine sections below don't apply, but the front end, rust and transmission notes still do.
We counted 1,053 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2011–2016 F-250s with the 6.7L diesel (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often. They don't tell you how many trucks have a problem, and owners with problems are far more likely to file a report than owners without them.
At a glance
- Front-end shake ("death wobble") is the most frequently reported problem by a wide margin. Check the front end carefully on any 4x4.
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is the most expensive known failure. Clean fuel and regular fuel filter changes matter.
- 2011–2012 trucks have extra early-production issues: exhaust temperature sensors, turbochargers and NOx sensors.
- The transmission (6R140) has a good reputation when it's been serviced and the engine hasn't been aggressively tuned.
Front-end shake ("death wobble")
About 4 in 10 of the diesel complaints we counted (445 of 1,053) describe a violent shaking of the front end and steering wheel, usually set off by a bump at highway speed. It's reported on every year from 2011 to 2016. Owners describe having to brake hard to make it stop.
This isn't unique to Ford. It can happen on any truck with a solid front axle once steering and suspension parts wear. Ford released a service bulletin in 2011 that added a new steering stabilizer, but owners on forums frequently report that a new stabilizer only hides the shake for a while. The fix owners most often report as lasting is replacing worn parts, especially the track bar and its bushings, and checking the ball joints, tie rods and alignment. Bigger tires and lifts without the right correction parts make it more likely.
When buying: have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends and steering linkage for movement. On the test drive, hit some bumps at 50–70 mph. Ask whether the front end has had work and what was replaced.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2)
All 6.7L engines from these years use a Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. When one fails, it can send metal particles through the whole fuel system, and the fix usually means replacing the pump, injectors, fuel lines and rails and cleaning the tank. Owners in NHTSA complaints describe bills of roughly $8,000 to $13,000, often with the engine shutting off while driving.
Failures are commonly linked to fuel problems: water, contamination or poor lubrication. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall (24S78) covers 2020–2022 trucks only, not 2011–2016.
When buying: ask for fuel filter service records and whether the pump has been replaced. Some owners add aftermarket protection (extra filtration, fuel additives, or a "disaster prevention" kit that keeps debris from reaching the injectors). These are signs of an owner who knew about the issue.
2011–2012: early-production issues
The first two years of the 6.7L have more reported problems than later years.
- Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors. 36 of the 41 EGT complaints we found are from 2011–2012 trucks. Owners describe the engine losing power or shutting down while driving, sometimes more than once. Ford's recall for this sensor covered certain ambulance-type trucks, not regular pickups.
- Turbocharger. Early turbos used ceramic bearings that frequently failed, often between about 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Ford later switched to an updated turbo with steel bearings. Ask whether the turbo has been replaced. A loud whistle or screech and smoke are warning signs.
- NOx sensors (2011). Ford ran a program in 2012–2013 to replace these sensors and update the software on 2011 trucks.
None of this means you should avoid a 2011–2012. It means records matter more: a 2011 with a replaced turbo and documented fixes can be a better buy than a neglected 2015.
Emissions system (DEF, DPF, NOx)
Like all modern diesels, these trucks use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Complaints include DEF heater failures (code P20BA is frequently mentioned), NOx sensor failures and "exhaust cleaning" (regeneration) running too often. Lots of idling and short trips are hard on these systems.
When buying: look for warning messages about exhaust fluid or exhaust filters. Check how many of the truck's engine hours were spent idling, if the dash shows it. Ask whether the emissions system has been removed ("deleted"). A deleted truck can fail inspections and may be illegal to drive where you live.
Cooling system leaks
Radiator leaks come up often on owner forums, especially on 2011–2013 trucks, sometimes under 100,000 miles. Other frequently reported leak points are the O-ring at the upper radiator hose fitting and the plastic coolant bottle (degas bottle) and its hoses.
When buying: look for dried coolant crust on the radiator, hoses and degas bottle. Check that the coolant level is correct and the coolant is clean.
Rust and cab mounts
In salt-belt states, check the cab corners, rocker panels and wheel arches, and the lower radiator support. A smaller number of owners report rusted cab mounts that let the cab shift on the frame. That's a structural problem worth having a mechanic look at.
Transmission (6R140)
The 6-speed automatic is generally well regarded. Reported problems include harsh or slipping shifts and torque converter shudder, most often on trucks that tow heavy loads, missed fluid changes, or have aggressive engine tunes.
Maintenance tips for owners
These are Ford's intervals as published for these years. Use the "severe service" numbers if you tow, plow, idle a lot or drive off-road.
| Service | Normal | Severe |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 10,000 miles or as shown on the dash | 5,000 miles |
| Fuel filters (both) | 22,500 miles | 15,000 miles / 6 months |
| Transmission fluid | 150,000 miles | 50,000 miles |
| Coolant (first change) | 105,000 miles / 6 years | 60,000 miles |
| Front axle and transfer case | 150,000 miles | 50,000–60,000 miles |
- Drain the water separator whenever the dash says "water in fuel." Don't ignore it, because water is hard on the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Buy fuel from busy stations and replace fuel filters with quality parts.
- Check the front end (track bar, ball joints, tie rods) at every tire rotation, especially if the truck is lifted or on bigger tires.
- Avoid long idling when you can. It's hard on the DPF and DEF systems.
Before you buy
- Have a Ford dealer pull the truck's service and warranty history using the VIN. Owners on forums call this an "OASIS report."
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Front-end shake (death wobble)
Moderate DIYSigns: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.
Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure
Easy DIYSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.
Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
6.7L exhaust temperature (EGT) sensor failure
Moderate DIYSigns: Check engine light, reduced power, or the engine shutting down. Most common on 2011–2012 trucks.
Fix: Scan for codes to find which sensor failed and replace it. There are four on the exhaust.
6.7L coolant leaks
Moderate DIYSigns: Low coolant, a sweet smell, dried coolant crust on the upper radiator hose fitting, radiator or coolant bottle.
Fix: Find the source. The upper radiator hose O-ring is a common and simple fix. Radiators and coolant bottles are bigger jobs.
6.7L DEF heater and NOx sensors
Moderate DIYSigns: DEF or exhaust fluid warnings, reduced power, check engine light.
Fix: Scan for codes. Common fixes are a NOx sensor or the DEF heater and pump assembly.

Noted strange "thumping" sound in truck. Took to certified local mechanic who has worked on our vehicles since 2016. This truck has just over 117,000 miles, I am the original owner (ordered while stationed in Afghanistan) and there has never been an accident, there has been no reason for removal of the body from the frame unless the Ford dealership who repaired the missing wire harness when the truck was less than 90 days old had to remove the truck bed. Inspection of vehicle noted the bolts holding the body to the frame were missing. Vehicle is currently being repaired. The risk is the body could have come off the frame and potentially caused bodily or property damage. I contacted Ford but have not received any feedback other than the call center laughing at me for the situation. There were no warning lights on the dash nor codes given to my scanning tool by the vehicle. Mechanic stated this is the third F-Series of this generation they have seen this year with the exact same problem. Truck cannot be moved due to safety concerns, locked out/tagged out of service. Repairs will cost approximately $2,500 including time and materials.

I was driving on the Freeway, 65 mph, all of sudden, the steering and truck started to shake violently, lost control of the steering wheel, due to the severe shaking, caused traffic behind me to stop suddenly as they noticed something major was going on. It felt like as if I had 4 flat tires, and it felt like a strong earthquake. I had to reduce speed to 10 mph per hour, it stopped shaking and exited the freeway, Never experience anything like this before.

On multiple occasions I have experienced the “F250 death wobble”. When reaching speeds of over 60 mph my front end and steering wheel start shaking violently. The entire truck is uncontrollable. It feels like the vehicle is going to shake apart. It is difficult to even hold onto the steering wheel and keep the vehicle going in a straight line. I have to slow down to about 30 mph on an interstate to make it stop, creating a dangerous situation. Sometimes I have to pull off the road. Often, when hitting a bump in the road it gets triggered. I’ve had it looked at multiple times at ford dealerships and nothing is ever found that is the cause of it. It’s extremely dangerous and there is no recall for this problem. Thankfully I have managed to keep control of the vehicle. I’ve experienced this problem for going on 3-5 years. I have replaced the front tires numerous times as that seems to help, though not eliminate the problem. Ford needs to do something about this with a recall or educating their service departments. There are tons of complaints online

At any given moment, if I have the wheel turned a little bit and hit a pot hole or crack in pavement, the drivers wheel will do a horrible wobble until I slam the brakes on and hold tight to the wheel. It will not come out of this wobble until I am at an almost complete stop. This has happened more than 10 times in a few weeks. It has been happening for a few months but is happening more and more now. I have had the tires balanced, changed the shocks, changed stabilizer shock, and replaced the tie rods. None of this has helped. After talking with a mechanic, this is a known Problem with Ford F250’s. This is very dangerous to not only me and my passengers but other drivers on the road as well when my truck swerves into other lanes and I have to slam my brakes on. I am hoping something can be done before injuries happen. Yesterday was the worst and almost caused an accident.

I experienced what I now have come to understand is called the death wobble. It was terrifying and I was going about 60 mph on an interstate that was under construction. I hit minor bumps and the whole truck began to wobble back-and-forth violently. it would not stop until I came down to about 15 miles an hour, after that steering felt loose. I thought I was going to die. The incident chewed up my tires with pock marks everywhere.

I took the truck to a mechanic and he could not see any problems. Other than my mechanic, no one has inspected the vehicle. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms prior to the event. I have been experiencing what is known as the Death Wobble. The death wobble is a violent shaking that happens to the front end of many Ford F250 and F350 Super Duty trucks. It typically occurs at speeds over 50 miles per hour. It can also happen after going over bumps or grooves in the road. To stop the shaking, drivers must quickly slow way down or even stop completely. In addition to the shaking potentially causing the driver to lose control of the truck, slowing or having to stop on fast-moving highways also puts both truck occupants and other vehicles at risk. I have taken this Vehicle to NTB for repairs and even had new tires put on in the event that was the issue. They have replaced all the steering linkages, tie-rods, ball joints, etc dealing with steering to no avail. I have taken this pickup back into the repair shop on 10/24/2022 once again as this has made me have to stop on major freeways to get the wobble to stop. This is putting me and others in danger.

When I hit any kind of bump in the road, especially when you change lanes the truck shakes so violently you have to slow down to about 10 miles an hour to get it to stop. This has been happening for years & on a few occasions it almost caused an accident. On one occurrence it was so bad the truck shook me off of the highway. This is an ongoing issue, I have tried many repairs to try to alleviate this problem with no luck.

my f250 super duty just completely stopped running while driving down the interstate, i then had the vehicle towed to the ford dealer where i purchased it in 2015. after the shop examination they found that the high pressure cp4 fuel pump had came apart and contaminated the fuel system entirely. The shop forman called and advised me of the problem and that it would cost 16,000.00 to have it fixed. he also advised me the this was a ongoing problem that they have had with this particular fuel pump, and that they had recall on the trucks from 2011 to 2018 for this. but he told me that my vin number was not on the recall list. he said that i would have to pay out of pocket to have the repairs done. I THEN CONTACTED FORD MANUFACTORING about this, the service lady that i spoke to said that there was nothing they could do because my truck was not on the recall list. To me this is a big safety measure, because when it quit, if i haven't been in an area where i was able to get out off the road there could have been a very serious accident. i feel that an issue like this that ford knows they have and continue using the same pumps should be there responsibility. I had know visible or any warnings sign of this was going to happen. this truck i purchased new and have put every mile on it and had this truck service very regularly. i have all the service records, just had the fuel filters and oil changed about 2 weeks before this happened. Thank you for your time. PLEASE ADVISE.

there is a severe fuel leak when the fuel pump is powered on from a fitting on the top of the fuel tank. This is the second time it has happened to me. first instance was supposedly repaired at the dealership who suggested it was a freak occurrence possibly caused by some road trash kicked up but there was no hard evidence either offered or given even though I asked. When the tow truck came to pick up my truck the driver mentioned that this is not an isolated incident that is becoming more common. The potential for a fire and/or explosion is very great in my opinion.

The electical system seems to have a bad connection. This can sometimes be triggered when releasing the parking brake. Most often the issue occurs when driving where all gauges go offline and numerous errors are thrown on the display. Most times you can reconcile the issue by wiggling the wiring harness under the stearing wheel located near the parking brake. This vehicle has not been inspected. I have talked to local repair shops and they have verbally quoted prices too high to trace it down. It does not seem to be temperature related. Unplugging the wiring harnesses and plugging them back in does seem to help for a short period of time. This has occurred over 30 times in the past 2 years. The truck has less than 40,000 miles on it. The truck will not start when it is having this issue but thankfully will continue to run if already started.

While driving on Interstate 10 just past SR129 in Florida my cruise control disengaged and my throttle pedal began working intermittently.Since there was no exit for about 12 miles I proceeded at the speed I could (less than 50 MPH) to the next exit. I was able to limp in to the ford dealer in Lake City. He looked at the truck, noted the brake lights stayed on and informed me that a little plastic tab had broken that pushed the brake light switch to the off position. He further informed me that Ford does not sell that little plastic bumper and that the whole brake pedal assembly would have to be replaced. Part cost ~$300 + $500 labor or about $800. I said no thanks and limped the vehicle home on the back roads since it was too dangerous to try to drive 40 - 50 mph on the interstate Apparently, this is a common problem with late model Fords That presents a Safety issue and a major expense for no justifiable reason. The safety issue being that the engine throttle disengages every 10 - 20 seconds while driving only due to the brake lights being on. This can cause rear end collision and other accidents for no good reason. The monetary issue is Ford charging $800 when a $3 dollar plastic bumper would solve the problem that should not have happened to start with. FRONT POSITIONED AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DURING FRONT END COLLISION. SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE INCURRED TO FRONT OF VEHICLE - GIVEN THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT, AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. VEHICLE HAS IN MOTION ON A STATE HIGHWAY. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH BEFORE SEEING A STOPPED VEHICLE IN THE ROADWAY. VERY LITTLE TIME TO APPLY BRAKE BEFORE IMPACT.
