2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 127 complaints across the 8 model-year 2018 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2017–2019 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 6.2L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The 2017 Super Duty got an aluminum body on a new steel frame. Engines are the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 6.2L V8 gas.

We counted 3,942 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2017–2019 F-250s and F-350s: 2,905 from diesel trucks and 970 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Front-end shake ("death wobble") dominates: more than half of all complaints (over 2,000), on both diesel and gas trucks.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is still the most expensive known diesel failure.
  • Several recalls cover tailgates, driveshafts, block heaters and rear cameras. Check that they were done.

Front-end shake ("death wobble")

1,532 diesel complaints and 542 gas complaints describe a violent front-end shake, usually after a bump at highway speed. That's the highest share of any truck generation we cover. Owners filed a class-action lawsuit over it in 2019. No recall has been issued, so the fix is up to the owner.

Owners and front-end shops most often report lasting fixes from replacing worn parts, especially the track bar, ball joints and tie rods, and checking alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone frequently only hides it.

When buying: ask whether the shake has ever happened and what was replaced. Have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends. Hit bumps at 50–70 mph on the test drive. A truck with a documented front-end rebuild can be a safer bet than one that's never been touched.

6.7L diesel

  • High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2): when it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, with repairs commonly reported at $8,000 or more. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall covers 2020–2022 trucks, not 2017–2019. Ask for fuel filter records and whether the pump was replaced.
  • Other commonly reported repairs: EGR cooler clogging, exhaust temperature sensors, radiator leaks, and the plastic intercooler pipe cracking under boost.

Recalls to check on these years

  • Tailgate may open by itself (water shorting the electric release switch, recall 19V864000)
  • Driveshaft may fracture on 2017–2018 4x4s (recall 22V880000), and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts (recall 22V087000)
  • Engine block heater cord may short and overheat (recalls 18V894000 and 19V278000)
  • 2019 4x4 front axle weld problem (recall 20V576000) and 2019 rear axle shaft on trucks with a locking rear differential (recall 19V688000)
  • Several rear camera recalls

Body and rust

The aluminum body doesn't rust like steel, but check where steel and aluminum meet, along with the steel frame and brake lines.

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • Front-end shake (death wobble)

    Moderate DIY

Signs: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.

Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.

  • High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Easy DIY

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.

Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • 6.7L cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, sudden loss of power, boost or limp-mode codes.

Fix: Replace the plastic cold-side intercooler pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

  • Tailgate opens by itself

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The tailgate drops open while driving or parked, often after rain or a car wash.

Fix: Covered by a Ford recall for the electric release switch.

May be covered free by recall 19V864000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Driveshaft failure risk

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: Vibration from under the truck. A failure can cause loss of drive power.

Fix: Covered by Ford recalls on certain 2017–2018 4x4s and on gas trucks with aluminum driveshafts.

May be covered free by recall 22V880000 / 22V087000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Over the last couple of months I have experienced the death wobble 3 times! I have had the truck professionally inspected and i even replaced the tie rods, drag link bar, track bar, shocks and stabilizer bars and the problem is still happening. It has happend at speeds of 30 mph twice and a speed of 55 mph once. I don't know what else to do as I've researched and found that this is a common situation with 2017-2019 fords and something needs to be done. Thank you!

I was driving down the highway when the truck started shaking vigorously I could not control it. I went into another lane as I could finally push the break hard enough to stop. I checked for a recall. There is a recall for the Radial damper, but my Vin number is not covered under this and my dealership refuses to fix this. I also read there is a class action lawsuit regarding the death wobble, which is what I think is happening with my truck when I read the description of the issue. I need this vehicle added to the recall list so I can take it to the dealership and have repaired.

My sunroof is broken and in operatable, and the glass will not close all the way keeping the inside of the vehicle open to the elements. The noise is also very loud when traveling on the freeways. Ford quoted me $5000 to repair the system. The service advisor told me the Ford went with a different manufacturer because the parts kept braking from the old manufacturer. The advisor also told me that they would need to replace everything from the motor, tracks, etc., because of their change in manufacturing. If Ford knows that the parts are defective, why isn't there already a recall on this system?

The lug nuts have decorative caps that are easily damaged during ordinary maintenance. Once damaged, the nuts cannot be properly torqued. This puts proper tightening at risk. This then increases the result of the nuts loosening, falling off, and losing control of the vehicle.

Our 2108, Ford F-250, Lariat model with extended cab, the sunroof brackets (plastic) broke and the sunroof can not be opened or closed, and became loose. The brackets that hold the glass in place are made of plastic and they deteriorated to the point where they would no longer hold the glass in place. This is possibly a safety concern as the glass may detach from the roof and cause injury in the cab, or possibly fly off and impact oncoming vehicles or vehicles behind the F250. These brackets should not be made of plastic due to the very large glass sunroofs weight. This is a known problem as indicated by many others on youtube.com, and other online website postings. Our F250 was taken into our local Ford dealership service department and upon inspection the tech indicated that both sides of the plastic arm brackets were broken and the window was non-operable. As per technicians official vehicle report it required replacement of FL3Z 1651070 E :GUIDE. Cost was $945.47 to replace plastic brackets which will more than likely break again after minimal strain due to the heavy weight of the glass sunroof.

I loaned my F250 to my son to move his furnishings from his apartment in Chicago back to Iowa. Once he got on the interstate, the truck began to shake violently causing him to feel he would lose control of the vehicle. The only way to stop it was to pull over and stop the vehicle. This could have resulted in severe injury or worse. I am beyond furious, upset and am going to escalate this known problem in any way I can including media watchdogs, social media, etc. After a short search on the web, I find out it is a known defect but nothing has been done by Ford or your organization. My truck had 12,000 miles on it…nothing should be worn out and in no way should there have been a safety danger to my son by driving it. I would like communication from your organization immediately as Ford tells me it is up to you to issue a recall and you have not done so. This is unconscionable in every possible way.

Driving at approximately 70 mph I traversed over a road divider of a suspension type bridge and immediately encounter the so called “Death Wobble” in my entire front end steering mechanism. The vehicle and steering wheel vibrated so violently that it caused a lane excursion. Applying brakes and slowing to 30 mph the steering came under control. This is the (3) third incident of this happening to my vehicle.

On 12/2/2022 at ~9:30 AM I was westbound on Interstate 40 in SW AZ. Traffic was average, road was clean and dry. My right front tire clipped a small pothole. The front end of the truck began to shake then became a violent, out of control thrashing. I grabbed the oscillating steering wheel with both hands to avoid changing lanes and hitting other vehicles. I tapped the brakes to shut down the cruise control. But my truck continued the violent shaking and the steering wheel wasn't much help. Only after I had let my speed drop dramatically did this incident began to subside. Eventually I steered onto the shoulder and it stopped. I needed a few minutes to regain my composure to exit I-40 and return home at 35 MPH.

With no indication the truck started shaking violently after driving over an overpass expansion joint at about 60-65 mph on highway. After slowing to about 20-25 mph in breakdown lane, it seem to go away. Approximately 3-4 miles down the highway, again going over an expansion joint to a bridge this time, it happened again. With the same process of pulling into the breakdown lane and reducing speed to 20-25 mph it went away. Obviously looking this up on the internet, you come across the Ford death wobble. If this doesn’t constitute a recall, what does, death..

WE MUST BRAKE IMMEDIATELY AND SLOW DOWN TO REGAIN CONTROL OF VEHICLE. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, NOT ONLY FOR THE SHAKING BUT SLOWING DOWN THAT QUICKLY ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE HAULING A 35 FT CAMPER AS WELL. TODAY I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT FORD SAYS THIS IS A ONE TIME FIX. Fuel pump faulted, engine would just cut off in middle of driving whether on highway, street, or interstate. Engine would randomly shut off. Took to ford dealership, they had to replace low pressure and high pressure fuel pumps, the dealership says this model is notorious for that, the fuel pumps tear apart and send metal into the fuel rail. This caused the truck to not get diesel and shut off. An extreme safety issue. Several times it happened while driving, and nothing prepared you for it to happen. Below is what I'm experiencing with my vehicle and I want to see if there is anything I can do to get Ford to fix the problem. Is there anyway I can get my VIN on the affected list? The upper oil pan CSAT recall has affected a range of Ford F-250 models, primarily those equipped with the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine. While specific years can vary depending on the exact nature of the issue and the recall campaign, it's generally considered that models from 2011 to 2020 have been impacted. However, it's important to note that the best way to determine if your specific F-250 is affected by a recall is to: Check the NHTSA Recall Website: Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website (NHTSA) and enter your vehicle's VIN to see if any recalls are active. Contact Your Local Ford Dealership: They can provide specific information on recalls and potential issues related to your vehicle's year and model. Consult the Ford Owner Website: You can often find recall information and service bulletins on the Ford Owner website. By following these steps, you can ensure that your F-250 is up-to-date with any necessary recalls and repairs.

2018 has Death Wobble which has been reported by many and a recall was issued but we have taken it back 3 times for this recall/death wobble=tie rod, sector shaft, drag link replaced (the first time it wasn't recalled yet so we had to pay for it and still have not been reimbursed) last 2 times they fix the tie rod, shaft or whatever but it keeps happening and it is scary. Lucky not to have caused an accident. Also because of the "death wobble" it has ruined the alignment and some tracker line thing as well as our tires and we have to pay for those things even though it is caused by the death wobble/recall?! -Component described above, yes it is available for inspection upon request -Safety at risk because if we are going over 60 and hit a bump the vehicle starts to shake uncontrollably and we have to slam on the brakes to make it stop while going that fast with other vehicles going that fast we have almost caused several accidents and almost hit a barrier trying to stop it -yes problem has been preproduced, verified and supposedly fixed but never lasts more than a month --yes the vehicle component has been inspected by the manufacturer it is an open RECALL -NO WARNING LAMP, MESSAGE etc. Just uncontrollable shaking of vehicle if hits a bump

The driver's side rear door locks freeze, and once the door is opened it will not stay closed/latched. I have a video of the door not latching shut, and bouncing back open when attempting to close it. This is the same issue as outlined in Customer Satisfaction Program 18N03; however, the dealer and Ford Corporate advised my VIN is not included on the recall for this issue. When the door lock is frozen and the door will not shut, the automatic running board on the driver's side will not close and the light on the bottom of the driver's mirror and inside the vehicle stays on. If you hold the door shut with your hand or put a ratchet strap on it to hold it in place, the running board closes and the lights go off. This is unsafe for passengers of the rear of the vehicle as the door will not latch when frozen. This issue has been witnessed by the local dealership, but they tell me the VIN is not on the recall list for this issue. Attached pictures show the door closed but running board out and mirror side light on, holding door shut and running board in and side light off, and door ajar when trying to close it and it not latching.

Low fuel pressure alert came on the truck. It went away and then came on again a few days later. We took the truck to Joe Meyers Ford in Houston, TX. They verified the code/alert and replaced the fuel filter, then re-tested. The alert returned and once they continued their diagnosis, it was determined that the fuel pressure control valve had failed, allowing fuel, DEF, and water into the fuel filter. The fuel pressure would no increase to minimum spec of 55 psi. Ford then said that without replacing the Fuel Pressure Control Valve, Fuel pump, fuel filters, and flushing all the lines, the risk for the engine to seize up was very likely. They noted this was a similar issue happening to 2020 and older trucks, but all the same parts and issues. Upon repairing the truck, we have read up on recall 24V957 and feel the issues we encountered are identical in complexity and costs. We paid nearly $20,000 in repairs.

100k miles and the high pressure fuel pump is failed. Created small metal particles that got into fuel lines. Everything needs to be replaced. There’s a recall on over 80k trucks with the same issue. Local ford said this is the same issue as all the recalls but because we don’t have the recall on our VIN, we have to pay $20k for replacement.

Just saw where models I believe starting with 2020 have been recalled for same issue. Don’t understand why 18 models weren’t.

On a very busy freeway truck started making a noise and losing power. 18 wheelers are coming up fast behind us and honking at us not knowing we are losing power and can not pull over because we are going over a bridge. The truck continued to lose power and messages started to appear saying powering down. We made it off the freeway and the truck completed died on us. Could not start. Had to call a wrecker and be towed over 100 miles back home. Well over $450.00. The next day called a mobile diagnosis that was $175.00 to tell us it was the fuel system. Got quoted from the Ford dealership $15k to repair so we took it to CS AUTOMOTIVE. They charged us $13,0000 for the repair. Shortly after getting the repair done, Ford issued a recall on 2018 Ford F250 for the same issue as our 2018 Ford F250 but our vin # was not included in the recall. It is clearly the same issue and we were told they will not do anything as our vin # was not in the recall.

I THINK THE NHTSA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE THE HEADLIGHTS ON ALL NEW FORD SUPER DUTY PICKUPS. EVEN ON LOW BEAMS THEY HAVE AN EXTREMELY BRIGHT AND BLINDING DOUBLE STACK OF LIGHTS ON EACH SIDE. THESE LIGHTS ARE THE MOST BLINDING LIGHTS COMING AT YOU FROM THE FRONT OR REAR THAT I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THESE ARE LEGAL? I EVEN DRIVE A PICKUP SO THIS ISN'T JUST A COMPLAINT FROM SOME PERSON WHO HATES TRUCKS. THESE LIGHTS I'M REFERRING TO ARE REALLY BLINDING TO OTHER DRIVERS.

NEW F250 PICKUP TRUCKS HAVE FOUR HEADLIGHTS SHOWING AT ALL TIMES WHEN OPERATED IN HIGH BEAM OR LOW BEAM. THIS GIVES OTHER DRIVERS THE IMPRESSION THAT HIGH BEAMS ARE BEING USED AT ALL TIMES, WHICH CAN LEAD TO OTHER DRIVERS FLASHING THEIR HIGH BEAMS AT F250 DRIVERS IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE THEM DIM THEIR HIBEAMS. HOW WERE THE HEADLIGHTS FOR THESE VEHICLES CERTIFIED FOR HIGHWAY USE.

“Death wobble” at 60mph while on the highway after hitting a small pothole. Controllable when slowed to 35mph on the shoulder

I STARTED LOOKING INTO THIS ISSUE TO SEE IF OTHERS HAVE HAD IT. IT'S CALLED, THE "DEATH WOBBLE". THE FORD DEALERSHIP KNOWS ABOUT IT BUT DOESN'T HAVE A FIX FOR IT. IT HAS BEEN TAKEN IN AND NO REPAIRS ARE NEEDED. HOW COME IT'S STILL HAPPENING?!?! THEY NEED TO HAVE A FIX FOR THIS ISSUE. I DON'T WANT TO CRASH BECAUSE THE TRUCK IS WOBBLING SO MUCH! I THINK WITH THE AMOUNT WE PAID FOR THE TRUCK THIS SHOULDN'T BE A CONCERN BUT IT IS!!

This particular truck has heated front seats. While I was driving today 2/18/2022 at about 2:35pm the passenger heated seat was on and the seat caught on fire. The seat was empty and nothing was on the seat. I looked over and there were flames coming from the seat. A hole about a quarter in size was burned in my seat.

MY TRUCK TAILGATE IS OPENING WITHOUT CAUSE. IT HAPPENED 3 TIMES BEFORE A RECALL WAS SUPPOSEDLY COMPLETED IN JANUARY AND HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES SINCE. TWICE WHEN PULLING A TRAILER JUST AFTER STARTING TO BACKUP. THAT LAST WAS WHEN MY CAR PLAY MALFUNCTIONED WITH THE APPLE PHONE. DURING TROUBLESHOOTING WORK THE TAILGATE OPENED WHILE SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY. I HAVE DAMAGE TO THEN GATE CAUSED BY A TRAILER STRIKE ON 1 OPENING AND THE DEALERSHIP IS NOT HELPFUL AND HAS NOT TAKEN THIS SERIOUSLY. THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN..

I WENT OVER TO CHECK THE DRIVERS SIDE AND GAVE IT A WIGGLE AND NOTICED THAT THE KEY WAY FELL OUT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WIPER ARM WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE SHAFT TO MAKE YOUR WIPERS MOVE. I THEN WENT BACK OVER TO THE PASSENGER SIDE A NOTICED THE KEY WAY LAYING ON SHROUD AT THE BASE OF THE WIPER ARM.
