2014 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 149 complaints across the 8 model-year 2014 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2011–2016 · 6.7L Power Stroke diesel · Updated 2026-10-01
These notes cover the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. If the truck has the 6.2L gas engine, the engine sections below don't apply, but the front end, rust and transmission notes still do.
We counted 1,053 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2011–2016 F-250s with the 6.7L diesel (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often. They don't tell you how many trucks have a problem, and owners with problems are far more likely to file a report than owners without them.
At a glance
- Front-end shake ("death wobble") is the most frequently reported problem by a wide margin. Check the front end carefully on any 4x4.
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is the most expensive known failure. Clean fuel and regular fuel filter changes matter.
- 2011–2012 trucks have extra early-production issues: exhaust temperature sensors, turbochargers and NOx sensors.
- The transmission (6R140) has a good reputation when it's been serviced and the engine hasn't been aggressively tuned.
Front-end shake ("death wobble")
About 4 in 10 of the diesel complaints we counted (445 of 1,053) describe a violent shaking of the front end and steering wheel, usually set off by a bump at highway speed. It's reported on every year from 2011 to 2016. Owners describe having to brake hard to make it stop.
This isn't unique to Ford. It can happen on any truck with a solid front axle once steering and suspension parts wear. Ford released a service bulletin in 2011 that added a new steering stabilizer, but owners on forums frequently report that a new stabilizer only hides the shake for a while. The fix owners most often report as lasting is replacing worn parts, especially the track bar and its bushings, and checking the ball joints, tie rods and alignment. Bigger tires and lifts without the right correction parts make it more likely.
When buying: have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine running while you watch the track bar ends and steering linkage for movement. On the test drive, hit some bumps at 50–70 mph. Ask whether the front end has had work and what was replaced.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2)
All 6.7L engines from these years use a Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. When one fails, it can send metal particles through the whole fuel system, and the fix usually means replacing the pump, injectors, fuel lines and rails and cleaning the tank. Owners in NHTSA complaints describe bills of roughly $8,000 to $13,000, often with the engine shutting off while driving.
Failures are commonly linked to fuel problems: water, contamination or poor lubrication. Ford's 2024 CP4 recall (24S78) covers 2020–2022 trucks only, not 2011–2016.
When buying: ask for fuel filter service records and whether the pump has been replaced. Some owners add aftermarket protection (extra filtration, fuel additives, or a "disaster prevention" kit that keeps debris from reaching the injectors). These are signs of an owner who knew about the issue.
2011–2012: early-production issues
The first two years of the 6.7L have more reported problems than later years.
- Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors. 36 of the 41 EGT complaints we found are from 2011–2012 trucks. Owners describe the engine losing power or shutting down while driving, sometimes more than once. Ford's recall for this sensor covered certain ambulance-type trucks, not regular pickups.
- Turbocharger. Early turbos used ceramic bearings that frequently failed, often between about 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Ford later switched to an updated turbo with steel bearings. Ask whether the turbo has been replaced. A loud whistle or screech and smoke are warning signs.
- NOx sensors (2011). Ford ran a program in 2012–2013 to replace these sensors and update the software on 2011 trucks.
None of this means you should avoid a 2011–2012. It means records matter more: a 2011 with a replaced turbo and documented fixes can be a better buy than a neglected 2015.
Emissions system (DEF, DPF, NOx)
Like all modern diesels, these trucks use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Complaints include DEF heater failures (code P20BA is frequently mentioned), NOx sensor failures and "exhaust cleaning" (regeneration) running too often. Lots of idling and short trips are hard on these systems.
When buying: look for warning messages about exhaust fluid or exhaust filters. Check how many of the truck's engine hours were spent idling, if the dash shows it. Ask whether the emissions system has been removed ("deleted"). A deleted truck can fail inspections and may be illegal to drive where you live.
Cooling system leaks
Radiator leaks come up often on owner forums, especially on 2011–2013 trucks, sometimes under 100,000 miles. Other frequently reported leak points are the O-ring at the upper radiator hose fitting and the plastic coolant bottle (degas bottle) and its hoses.
When buying: look for dried coolant crust on the radiator, hoses and degas bottle. Check that the coolant level is correct and the coolant is clean.
Rust and cab mounts
In salt-belt states, check the cab corners, rocker panels and wheel arches, and the lower radiator support. A smaller number of owners report rusted cab mounts that let the cab shift on the frame. That's a structural problem worth having a mechanic look at.
Transmission (6R140)
The 6-speed automatic is generally well regarded. Reported problems include harsh or slipping shifts and torque converter shudder, most often on trucks that tow heavy loads, missed fluid changes, or have aggressive engine tunes.
Maintenance tips for owners
These are Ford's intervals as published for these years. Use the "severe service" numbers if you tow, plow, idle a lot or drive off-road.
| Service | Normal | Severe |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 10,000 miles or as shown on the dash | 5,000 miles |
| Fuel filters (both) | 22,500 miles | 15,000 miles / 6 months |
| Transmission fluid | 150,000 miles | 50,000 miles |
| Coolant (first change) | 105,000 miles / 6 years | 60,000 miles |
| Front axle and transfer case | 150,000 miles | 50,000–60,000 miles |
- Drain the water separator whenever the dash says "water in fuel." Don't ignore it, because water is hard on the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Buy fuel from busy stations and replace fuel filters with quality parts.
- Check the front end (track bar, ball joints, tie rods) at every tire rotation, especially if the truck is lifted or on bigger tires.
- Avoid long idling when you can. It's hard on the DPF and DEF systems.
Before you buy
- Have a Ford dealer pull the truck's service and warranty history using the VIN. Owners on forums call this an "OASIS report."
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 2014 Ford F-250 Super Duty. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Front-end shake (death wobble)
Moderate DIYSigns: Violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end after hitting a bump, usually at 45+ mph. Slowing down hard is often the only way to stop it.
Fix: Find and replace the worn parts, most often the track bar or its bushings, then check ball joints, tie rod ends, the drag link and alignment. A new steering stabilizer alone usually only hides the problem.
High-pressure fuel pump (CP4) failure
Easy DIYSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes, metal in the fuel filter. Often there's little warning.
Fix: Prevention is the fix you can do: change both fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator, and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners add a kit that keeps pump debris away from the injectors. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
6.7L exhaust temperature (EGT) sensor failure
Moderate DIYSigns: Check engine light, reduced power, or the engine shutting down. Most common on 2011–2012 trucks.
Fix: Scan for codes to find which sensor failed and replace it. There are four on the exhaust.
6.7L coolant leaks
Moderate DIYSigns: Low coolant, a sweet smell, dried coolant crust on the upper radiator hose fitting, radiator or coolant bottle.
Fix: Find the source. The upper radiator hose O-ring is a common and simple fix. Radiators and coolant bottles are bigger jobs.
6.7L DEF heater and NOx sensors
Moderate DIYSigns: DEF or exhaust fluid warnings, reduced power, check engine light.
Fix: Scan for codes. Common fixes are a NOx sensor or the DEF heater and pump assembly.

Recalls
A recall doesn't mean a truck still has the problem. Enter the truck's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a dealer to see whether the repair was done.
Steering
Dec 2020 · #20E090000Icon Vehicle Dynamics, LLC (Icon) is recalling all 05-UP FSD 2.5 Centerline Stabilizer Kits with part number 65050. The kits were sold as an accessory for certain 2005-2021 Ford F-250 4X4 and F-350 4X4 pickup trucks. The foam ring inside the stabilizer "through shaft" may block the piston ports, possibly causing the steering to lock up.
Risk and fix
Risk: If the steering locks, it can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Icon will notify owners, and dealers will install a new shock assembly with a revised foam ring and steel support disc, free of charge. The recall began December 21, 2020. Owners may contact Icon customer service at 1-951-689-4266.

2014 ford f250 super duty 6.7 diesel. Coming down mountain in Arizona (bumblebee pass) hit small bump. Truck began violently shaking in the “death wobble mode”. Later I was just driving on the freeway and hit a small bump at 70 mph (75 mph zone), again violent shaking that did not stop until I was driving 50 mph. Since I’m leaving on cross country trip soon, I opted to take vehicle to mechanic. It is there now. This is because there is no recall on 2014 ford for this issue and I don’t have weeks available to fight with ford. have learned today that this is very common across the county and has been reported to ford motor company but the company is denying their liability to fix this very dangerous issue! My vehicle symptoms are exactly what there have been numerous complaints about. I will be sending the bill to ford.

Death wobble at speeds greater than 46 mph. I have to come to a complete stop to make it stop. I almost got rear ended by a semi before I could get off the interstate on the shoulder. My vehicle is a 2014 but I have experienced this several times since I bought it new. Took it to my local ford dealer to see if they can do anything to fix it. It’s really dangerous when it happens on a busy interstate. The front end sounds like it’s coming apart and steering is impossible when it happens.

On November 26, 2024 we experienced our third incident of the death wobble. During this third incident it threw the truck into oncoming traffic. After the second incident of the death wobble, we had the steering stabilizer fixed that was November 11, 2022. There was also damage to one tire due to truck leaving road. There was no warning lights or anything else prior to the uncontrollable shaking.

The truck is scheduled to go in to a Ford Dealer Sept 27, 2022. The steering became unmanageable changing lanes at 50 miles an hour. I was almost impossible to controll the truck due to uncontollable shaking. If someone had been beside us we would have crashed. I am afraid to ride in the truck because there isn't any warning this is going to happen. I was literally scared to death. From my research it is called the death wobble. Consumers should not be responsible for paying for repairs for defective equipment they didn’t cause. And, most importantly, truck owners should not have to worry about potentially being injured or killed in an accident or harming someone else. this has happened several times with my husband when I wasn't in the truck and I had no idea how serious it is.

Just as we were entering Lufin Tx our truck dropped from 60 mph to 30 with no warning. I pulled to shoulder of the road and truck completely died. If we had been on an interstate there's a possibility the truck would have died in the middle of the interstate hwy with no way of getting out of traffic. Our truck was towed to Lufkin Ford since we couldn't afford the $ 394.00 to have it towed closer to our home. We were told by Lufkin Ford our P4 high pressure pump had went out, sending metal shards through our motor a $9400.00 repair. To this date our truck has not been repaired because there's a problem getting the pump. It seems this is a problem with the high pressure fuel pump in these diesel trucks, cause I was informed there are 6 trucks at this repair shop waiting on the same part so I'm sure this has been an on going problem.

Part Failure Motorcraft FD4615 (secondary filter on top of the engine) It is available for inspection. This occurred approximately 200 miles after installation. Failure resulted in diesel fuel saturating the entire engine compartment, firewall, and underside of the truck. Extreme fire hazard. Failure should be confirmed by mechanic today (it's pretty obvious). No other inspection performed as of yet. No warning lamps/messages/symptoms. Only sign was extreme smell of diesel in the cab. When vehicle stopped, and was inspected, there was diesel dripping from the engine compartment and underside of truck past the transmission. Was driving truck down the road when I turned off on a side road. When I did, there was an extreme smell of diesel. I stopped, and got out of the truck. There was smoke coming from under the hood, and a very substantial amount of diesel running out of the engine bay down towards the transmission. After allowing the vehicle to cool, I popped the hood. The entire engine bay was saturated. Diesel was pooled on top of the intake, as well as running down the side of the engine and firewall. Some smoke was still present. A person who stopped momentarily turned the ignition to the "on" position to see if there was an obvious leak. The center of the top of the fuel filter was spraying fuel out like a geyser, hitting the underside of the hood, and blanketing the engine.

I was able to keep the Vehicle in the travel lane and was able to pull over to the shoulder. I Vehicle pulled over to see if I was ok and explained the truck was front tires shaking violently. I did a pulmonary check under the vehicle any everything looked in order. I followed up with a local Mechanic who informed me that this was a common issue with these vehicles that was called the "Ford Death Wobble" and suggested that i take it to a specialist who deals with the suspension. I followed up with R&H Spring and Truck repair, 4806 W Hurley Pond Rd, Wall Township, NJ 07719. R&H is familiar with the issue and the Vehicle is currently scheduled to be diagnosed. The recommendation is to change most of the front end because no one issues causes this to happen. The vehicle has less that 44, 000 miles on it and clearly a design issue. I have been In law enforcement for 30 years and have never experienced anything like this. I have been trained in all types of advanced driving course throughout those years. Fortunately I was driving at the time rather a less experienced driver. I am not requesting anything other than the issue be addressed to protect the public. My 2014 F250 is also experiencing a death wobble like many other ford f250 customers already reported. The steering and front wheels shakes abruptly when driving on uneven roads on highways unexpectedly. This happens between 60 to 75 miles on highways, and I need to reduce the speed drastically to regain the control of the vehicle. This sudden speed reduction can cause back-end collisions and ford does not have any safety recalls on this issue as far as I know. This happened to me multiple occasions on same uneven roads and i tired to avoid those uneven areas these days.

MICHELIN LTX A/T 2 Size P275 65 R20 I have a 2014 Ford F250 SRW that I bought new in July 2014. The truck has 30,000 miles on it and 20,000 of it was towing a 5th wheel. The truck sits inside next to the 5th wheel when its not being used. I had the original tires on which had about 50% of the tread left. The rear tires are always inflated to 80 PSI before towing. We had 2 blowouts on the rear tires. The first I started feeling a vibration and thought I had a tire going down. No TPMS warnings. I pulled off and when I got below 45 the vibration stopped. The tires were all up and the tire temps were within 10 degrees of each other. So we continued on when I got back on I-75 south above 50, I started feeling the vibration again. I got over to the middle lane thinking maybe it was a pavement issue. Thats when the passenger rear tire blew. That tire was split in the side wall on both sides like the seam let go. Didn't think much of it when within about 50 miles, just south of Lexington the driver side rear tire blew. I got a little vibration that I was thinking that feels just like before the other side blew, but not nearly as much warning (about enough time to let off the gas) Same side wall split, except this also took out part of the tread and damaged the truck. Tire Discounters that was able to get us the same Michelin tires that came on the truck. The manager and his senior tire tech thought the tires were defective and told me to take the old tire and report the DOT number.

The recall that expired July 31, 2022 was to fix the reductant heater and sender assembly. I've had this issue ever since I owned this vehicle, but it only occurs when the DEF tank is at half-volume. Once it's at half volume, it generates the DTC P21B0 and doesn't tell me how many miles I have left in my DEF tank nor does it state how full it is. This is a risk in driving, as I have no idea how much fluid is left in my DEF tank. I was in the dealership in June to get two separate recalls resolved (21E01 as well as 21M01), but for 21M01, you needed to have the DTC present to be eligible. Well, the particular issue, 21M01, only occurs in my 2014 F-250 6.7L when the DEF tank gets near 1/2 full. This took several months to occur, landing it two weeks outside the July 31,2022 date. December 24th at approximately 1100 hr. Driving normally on the Garden State Parkway Southbound approaching exit 98. The vehicle instantaneously began to shake out of control. HITTING A BUMP AT HIGHWAY SPEED (55+ MPH) CAUSES THE FRONT END TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AS IF THE FRONT TIRE HAS BLOWN. STEERING BECOMES DIFFICULT AS THE FRONT END SHUTTERS. SLOWING WELL BELOW HIGHWAY SPEED BRINGS IT BACK TO A CONTROLLABLE STATE (HAD TO PULL OVER AND COMPLETELY STOP ONCE). EFFECT IS WORSE AS SPEED INCREASES, ABOVE 70 MPH IS NEARLY UNRECOVERABLE.

ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO, I WAS TRAVELLING IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY. A FORD F-250 WAS IN THE LANE TO MY RIGHT. AS MY LANE WAS PICKING UP SPEED, HIS LANE WAS SLOWING DOWN. SUDDENLY, HE CHANGED LANES RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, CAUSING ME TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES, NARROWLY AVOIDING AN ACCIDENT. ALTHOUGH HE DID HAVE HIS TURN SIGNAL ON, I DID NOT SEE IT, DUE TO IT BEING THE SAME COLOR AS HIS ON/OFF BRAKE LIGHTS. TO ADD ON TO THAT, HE HAD HIS TAILLIGHTS ON, MAKING HIS TURN SIGNAL INDISTINGUISHABLE FROM HIS RUNNING LIGHTS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. AFTER RESEARCHING, I CONCLUDED I WOULD HAVE BEEN AT FAULT IF I HAD HIT HIS TRUCK, EVEN THOUGH HE DANGEROUSLY SWITCHED LANES WITH A BARELY VISIBLE TURN SIGNAL. I ASSUME THE REASON I DID NOT ANTICIPATE HIS MANEUVER IS BECAUSE MY BRAIN RECOGNIZED THE DIM TURN SIGNAL AS THE DRIVER TAPPING ON HIS BRAKES (AS ONE OFTEN DOES IN STOP/GO TRAFFIC). IT SHOULD NOT BE LEGAL FOR CAR MANUFACTURES TO PIGGY BACK TURN SIGNALS ONTO BRAKE LIGHTS. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN A CAR (THIS F-250 FOR EXAMPLE) USES A SINGLE BULB FOR THREE PURPOSES (BRAKE/TURN/TAIL LAMP), IT CREATES CONFUSION THAT COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT OR EVEN DEATH. ORANGE/YELLOW/AMBER TURN SIGNALS REDUCE THE TIME FOR THE BRAIN TO REALIZE THIS CAR IS INTENDING TO TURN. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, EVEN A FRACTION OF A SECOND COULD MEAN AVOIDING A DEADLY ACCIDENT. AFTER LOOKING INTO THIS, I REALIZED MY OWN CAR HAS THE SAME SETUP! (2013 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN). THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! I HAVE HAD MANY INSTANCES OF CONFUSION OVER THIS, BUT THIS CLOSE CALL BROUGHT ME TO SAY SOMETHING OVER THIS LACK OF EFFORT TO PROTECT AMERICAN DRIVERS. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED PROPERLY, AS IT IS A SIMPLE REGULATION THAT COULD HELP SAVE LIVES. I FOUND OUT THAT AMERICAN/CANADA ARE THE ONLY COUNTRIES THAT DO NOT MANDATE AMBER TURN SIGNALS. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO PROTECT AMERICAN DRIVERS AND FUTURE GENERATIONS.

WHEN TOWING A TRAVEL TRAILER SOMETHING SEEMS TO BE BENDING HITCH PINS SLIGHTLY. THIS IS UNNERVING TO SAY THE LEAST. IT APPEARS THIS COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE IF THE PIN FAILS. *TR

2014 FORD F250. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE ACCELERATION ISSUES. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE ACCELERATED TO APPROXIMATELY 133 RPM IN LOW GEAR TO EVEN MOVE DOWN A SLIGHT SLOPE. IT WOULD ONLY ACHIEVE 10.6 TO 11.4 MPG OF FUEL REGARDLESS OF CITY OR HIGHWAY DRIVING. AT APPROXIMATELY 5400 MILES, THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED A VERY SLIGHT SHIMMY AT A SPEED OF 60 MPH. ON MARCH 7 2014, WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH. THE CONSUMER HAD TO BRAKE TO REDUCE HIS SPEED TO 60-65 MPH BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC AHEAD, AND WHEN HE DID, THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE STARTED TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE TO THE POINT, WHERE HE COULD BARELY CONTROL IT. *JB
