2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 178 complaints across the 8 model-year 2015 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

    Risk and fix

Risk: A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. • Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Pedals And Linkages

    Aug 2018 · #18V578000

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, 1500 Crew Cab Special Service, Tahoe Police Pursuit/Special Service, GMC Sierra 2500, and 3500 vehicles. The brake pedal pivot nut may loosen, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will add adhesive to the nut and reinstall the nut with increased tightness, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18278. • Air Bags:Frontal

    Jul 2017 · #17V437000

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

    Risk and fix

Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. The truck, with only 77,700 miles on it, suddenly started popping the error "Service Trailer Brake System" and no trailer was even attached at the time. It happened three times over the last day when starting the truck and initially driving for about the first 10 minutes. Other times it does not ding or show an error. Something in the integrated trailer brake system is faulty and appears to be a EXTREMELY COMMON issue on the Chevrolet trucks. When this error happens, there is no power to the electric trailer brakes. I tow a 33' 12,000 lbs fifth-wheel with this truck. Randomly not having trailer brakes is a HUGE SAFETY ISSUE! This is an EXTREMELY COMMON issue with the integrated brake controllers in the Chevrolet trucks and it needs to be a RECALL and repaired by Chevrolet. Randomly not having brakes on a heavy trailer is LIFE ENDANGERING for not only the occupants of the truck having the SAFETY ISSUE but for everyone else on the roadway around that truck!

My pickup truck has a Duramax diesel engine with a CP4 diesel injection pump. That pump has not failed yet in my truck. However it has been known to fail in numerous other GM vehicles with Duramax engines and when it does fail the engine comes to a complete stop and cannot be restarted. This is a potentially hazardous even fatal situation. Repair if the pump fails is very expensive - $12,000 to $14,000 in some cases. I would like GM to replace the injection pump at my dealership to ensure this known failure does not occur. My pickup truck is otherwise in excellent condition.

On 8/25/2025 I purchased a used 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD from a auto dealer and they had put new tires on the truck that aren't rated for a 2500 HD, I contacted them and they offered me $400 to replace them with the correct tires that cost me $1319.78 they refuse to help me anymore which is putting my life and others at stake if a tire is to blow out hauling heavy loads that the tires aren't rated for. That 3/4 ton truck is suppose to have tires with a (E) rating, also the TPMS system does't work because all the tires are under inflated for that truck. They have been contacted about this issue; FMVSS No. 120: FMVSS No. 139: FMVSS No. 138 cover this issue! The dealership violated the NHTSA standards and consumer protection laws among other laws.

At 66,600 miles [XXX], was almost rear ended because truck again just stopped running going 50 mph around a turn. Diesel fuel was pouring onto the hot engine second occurrence. I don't know how the truck didn't catch on fire. Thank [XXX] I wasn't towing my 14,500 lb fifth wheel either time. Both incidents were because of a CP4 injection Pump Failure completely taking out and polluting the entire fuel system. Per GM service department in Wintersville, Oh. Per a report from Car Complaints, the lawsuit alleges that 2011- through 2016-model-year Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups equipped with the 6.6L V8 LML turbodiesel Duramax engine are equipped with defective Bosch CP4 fuel pumps that are more fragile and prone to wear than previous CP3 fuel pumps. According to plaintiffs, the defective CP4 pumps can be destroyed by U.S. diesel fuel, which is allegedly “drier” than diesel fuel in other countries. The lawsuit alleges that U.S. diesel fuel does not provide adequate lubrication for the CP4 fuel pump. The lack of lubrication can lead to internal fuel pump damage and result in metal shavings that damage the pump, the fuel system, and the GM Duramax engine as well. This damage can lead to the truck stalling and losing power, and may require the vehicle to be towed to a shop, leaving customers with big repair bills. The lawsuit goes on to allege that GM was aware that the Duramax engines and related fuel pumps were defective prior to selling affected vehicles, but declined to notify customers. Rather, GM allegedly concealed that the defective CP4 pumps may be destroyed by U.S. diesel fuel.

I BOUGHT A 2015 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 HD LAST YEAR AND HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES CONCERNING THE VISIBILITY OF THESE HEADLIGHTS. I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA WITH FEW STREET LIGHTS AND RELY ON THESE LIGHTS TO SEE. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH LIGHT SHINING TO SEE CLEARLY AND IF IT'S RAINING, THE VISIBILITY IS NIL. I OWNED THE SAME TYPE VEHICLE IN 2005 AND HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE LIGHTS, MY SUBARU HAS BRIGHTER LIGHT PATTERN THAN MY TRUCK! I CONTACTED THE CHEVY CUSTOMER REP ON 8/17 AND EXPLAINED MY CONCERN. HE SAID THAT THE LIGHTS ARE DESIGNED TO WORK THAT WAY AND THEY AREN'T MAKING CHANGES UNLESS THERE ARE MORE COMPLAINTS. HE SAID HE WAS SORRY BUT THERE IS NOTHING HE CAN DO. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR THOSE WHO TRAVEL ON POORLY LIT ROADS AND IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN.

RECENTLY MY REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER HAS FAILED TO FUNCTION AND I FOUND THAT CANADA HAD RECALL FOR THIS REASON AND I'M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT POSSIBLE FIRE OR EXPLODING GLASS ON MY TRUCK. GOOD MORNING MR. HUNT, THANK YOU FOR CONTACTING TRANSPORT CANADA'S RECALLS DIVISION. IN REVIEWING THE RECALL AND DISCUSSING THE MATTER WITH GENERAL MOTORS CANADA, THEY HAVE CLARIFIED THAT RECALL N192220470 DOES INVOLVE 2015-2019 MODEL YEAR SILVERADO HD MODELS. IN REVIEWING THE PROVIDED VEHICLE INDENTIFICATION NUMBER, IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THIS VEHICLE NO LONGER RESIDES IN CANADA. REGISTRATION HISTORY SHOWS THAT IT WAS PREVIOUSLY EXPORTED OUT OF THE COUNTRY PRIOR TO THIS RECALL BEING ISSUED. THIS IS THE REASONING WHY YOUR VIN NUMBER IS NOT INCLUDED WITHIN THIS RECALL. GM'S N192220470 RECALL (TRANSPORT CANADA RECALL #2019-325) WAS ISSUED IN JUNE 2019, AND ONLY APPLIES TO VEHICLES THAT ARE REGISTERED AND OPERATED IN CANADA. DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL CLIMATE AND FAILURE RATES, THIS RECALL IS EXCLUSIVE TO CANADA, AND WAS NOT ISSUED IN THE UNITED STATES. HOWEVER, TO ADDRESS VEHICLES THAT ARE OPERATED AND REGISTERED IN SIMILAR CLIMATES, 'COLD STATES' IN THE UNITED STATES, GENERAL MOTORS USA ISSUED A VOLUNTARY REGION SPECIFIC CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM (N192265660). TO FIND OUT IF YOUR VEHICLE IS APPLICABLE TO THIS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM, YOU WOULD HAVE TO CALL GENERAL MOTORS USA WITH YOUR VIN NUMBER. FURTHERMORE, IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A SIMILAR FAILURE, AND FEEL YOUR SAFETY IS AT RISK, WE WOULD RECOMMEND CONTACTING AND LOGGING A COMPLAINT WITH OUR UNITED STATES COUNTERPARTS, SINCERELY,RECALLS DIVISION / MULTI-MODAL AND ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMS TRANSPORT CANADA / GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

THE VEHICLE HAD A HANDICAPPED DRIVER CONVERSION, WITH A GULL-WING DRIVER'S DOOR. THE DRIVER'S DOOR WAS ONLY HELD CLOSED WITH A MAGNET AT THE FRONT OF THE DOOR OPENING. THERE WAS NOT A LATCH TO ACTUALLY HOLD THE DOOR CLOSED. IN THE ACCIDENT, THE TRUCK WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED ON A GRAVEL ROAD. THE ROADWAY SHARPLY DESCENDED TO A LOW-WATER BRIDGE, WHICH CAUSED THE TRUCK TO ELEVATE AND LEAVE THE ROADWAY. WHEN THE TRUCK RETURNED TO THE ROAD, THE MAGNET HOLDING THE DRIVER'S DOOR FAILED, THE DRIVER'S DOOR POPPED OPEN, AND THE DRIVER WAS EJECTED 80 FEET. THE DRIVER IS NOW QUADRIPLEGIC, SUFFERING A C6-7 SPINAL CORD INJURY, AND A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. THE PHOTO FILES ILLUSTRATE THAT THE DRIVER'S DOOR WAS RIPPED OFF BECAUSE IT WAS OPENED, AND THE PASSENGER DOORS WERE LOCKED COMPLETELY SHUT. *DT *DT *DT *DT*JB CONSUMER STATED THEY DID NOT CONTACT THE CONVERSION COMPANY, CONVERSION IS A FAULTY DESIGN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND I WISH I HAD REALIZED BEFORE I PURCHASED THE TRUCK. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP. AT LEAST OFFER US THE OPTION TO PURCHASE LARGER HEADREST FOR THE REAR SEAT. *TR

HAD A VIBRATION PROBLEM WITH THIS 2015 SILVERADO 2500HD SINCE NEW SEPT. 2015 AT DIFFERING SPEEDS, FELT IN THE SEAT AND CENTER CONSOLE. VIBRATION IS ON CITY STREETS, HIGHWAYS, ALL ROADS. CENTER CONSOLE HAS A VERY NOTICEABLE SHAKE TO IT. VIBRATION AT TIMES IS MODERATE, AT OTHER TIMES MORE SEVERE. AT 2500 MILES BROUGHT TO GWATNEY CHEVROLET IN JACKSONVILLE, AR. THREE GOODYEAR TIRES REPLACED, ROAD FORCED BALANCED. AT 11,000 MILES BROUGHT TO GWATNEY CHEVROLET TWO MORE GOODYEAR TIRES REPLACED, ROAD FORCED BALANCED. IN GWATNEY NOTES, IT TOOK NINE TIRES TO FIND TWO GOOD TIRES TO PUT ON MY TRUCK. AT 18,000 MILES RETURNED TO GWATNEY CHEVROLET, SERVICE MANAGER STATED THE PROBLEM WAS THE TIRES AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY A PORTION OF THE COST. MY RESPONSE WAS I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR A PROBLEM THAT THE TRUCK HAD SINCE IT WAS NEW. THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS HOSTILE, ARGUMENTATIVE AND REFUSED TO DO ANY MORE WORK ON THE TRUCK. I COMPLAINED TO GM CUSTOMER CARE, THEY WANTED TO GIVE ME $100 AND CLOSE THE CASE. I ESCALATED MY COMPLAINT TO THE GM EXECUTIVE LEVEL, THEY APPEAR TO BE MORE ACCOMMODATING, THEY STATED THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE A GM TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TEAM LOOK AT MY PROBLEM. RIGHT NOW, I'M AWAITING FURTHER RESPONSE FROM GM.
