2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 131 complaints across the 8 model-year 2016 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.
We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
- 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
- Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
- Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
- Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).
2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump
Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.
When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.
2017–2019 Duramax L5P
Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.
Brakes and trailer brakes
- GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
- Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.
Gas trucks
The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.
Other recalls
- Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
- Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
- Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop for a Duramax.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure
Best left to a shopSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.
Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)
Dealer (recall)Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.
Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.
May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)
Dealer (recall)Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.
Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.
May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
'Service trailer brake system' warning
Easy DIYSigns: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.
Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.
L5P cracked intercooler pipe
Easy DIYSigns: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.
Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

Chevy Duramax trucks, 2011-2016 use a CP4 fuel pump that will eventually fail. The engine shuts off and there is a loss of steering and brakes. This is a major safety issue. I called Chevy GM 1800 222 1020 and was told, " we are aware of the problem, have no remedy, no recall has been issued yet, call back in a month". My daughter has a 2015 that failed when she was hauling expensive horses, the dealer put the same type defective pump back in the truck. Every diesel repair shop, dealer, and GM is aware of this defect. There is a class action law suit C/O JND Seattle WA. 1 866 848 0815 that may reimburse owners that have had a failure, assuming they are still alive. GM needs to recall, and replace these CP4 pumps with a CP3 or whatever they did to correct the issue in 2017 and later engines, prior to failure. Let ne know if I can provide any more information or assistance.

the vehicle developed a extremely hard down shift and then a check engine light came on. the vehicle went into limp mode, took the vehicle to local diesel mechanic and i was informed that the transmission was bad and had to be replaced, while replacing the transmission i was also told the transfer case was making noise and needed to be replaced. this happened in November of 2025 and the parts are not available. This happened while i was towing our trailer across a bridge when the traffic came to a sudden stop, once traffic started moving we could not get up to speed thus causing a traffic hazard. yes the repair shop was able to recreate the issue there were no warnings prior to the failure. I know GM has had issues with transmissions in newer models, i did not know that there was a process like this prior to getting my vehicle repaired and i needed it repaired as soon as possible. that is why i went to and independant repair facility.

Vehicles instrument cluster, HVAC, Radio and other electrical systems cut out while operating snowplow. GM is well aware of this issue per GM Service Bulleting NO.: PIT5387C (Feb 2016) through PIT5387P (10/17/2024), as well as GM Upfitter Integration UI Bulletin #124K (11/7/2019). All list this specific vehicle. This issue effects snowplows by all manufactures and is not confined to Western. Per the above bulletins published by GM, GM is to supply and install a wiring harness under a unique one time warranty procedure that does not expire with the vehicles base warranty. GM dealerships as well as GM's consumer assistance hotline state that GM part number 84043394 (fitting 2014-2019 vehicles) referenced to in PIT5387C and other bulletins has been discontinued. UP Bulletin 124k refers to and instructs to install GM part number 84288774 VYU Snow Plow Jumper harness per the latest version of GM service Bulletin PIT5387. With a note stating "this jumper harness and installation will be provided (one time) without charge". GM dealerships and GM customer assistance (parts) state that PN 84288774 does not appear in their parts system as a valid GM part. Therefore neither GM nor Western is able to provide any actionable solution to this known and documented issue. GM manufactured, sold, promoted, advertised and continues to state that snowplows can be installed on these vehicles with (or without) GM's factory snow plow prep option. Additionally GM continues to issue and publish Bulletins instructing GM dealerships how to fix this issue despite being fully aware of this impossibility. My 2016 Chevy at a stop light started jerking and then just shut off and wouldn’t start again. I had to have it towed and was told at the repair shop that it was the CP4 fuel pump that went. Of course I had them do all the repairs and they found metal shavings all through out the fuel system. I was without my truck for weeks and had to pay ridiculous cost of almost $13,000. With how often this is happening this should all be reimbursed to me and GM needs to step up and take care of it along with NHTSA.

I was driving home from work on a busy road that had road construction and my truck without warning just died as if it ran out of fuel. I had it diagnosed and it’s the MP4 injection pump that went bad. Very common in this year it’s a minimum of$9500. To replace the entire fuel system. It could have caused me to have an accident. And GM is aware of the injection pumps going bad. The MP4 pumps are designed for vehicles in European countries not the USA. Ford and Dodge have class action lawsuits against them for this faulty system.

MY DOCTORS HAD NO EXPLANATION ON WHY I HAVE LOST MY ABILITY TO SMELL. I DROVE 3 TIMES IN 2 YEARS TO SEATTLE,WA AND EVERY TIME I ARRIVED I WAS INCAPACITATED. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED AN EGR PART AND CLAIMED THE PART WAS LEAKING AND MY PROBLEM WAS SOLVED ON 9/6/2018. I MADE ONE TRIP OF SIX HUNDRED MILES 1 WEEK AFTER THE REPAIR AND WAS SO SICK AFTERWARDS, I STARTED LOOKING FOR ANSWERS MYSELF I BOUGHT A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR AND IT STARTS BEEPING AT 100 PPM WITHIN 2 MINUTES AFTER STARTING MY TRUCK, AND THE DETECTOR STARTS BEEPING WITH MY WINDOW DOWN. RIGHT NOW I AM WAITING FOR A CALL FROM MY DEALER TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM, MY TRUCK HAS 58,000 MILES, AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT ANYWHERE BECAUSE MY NOSE IS STILL BURNING FROM DRIVING 2 MILES ROUND TRIP TO A LOCAL POST OFFICE ON 9/17/2018. I BELIEVE I AM LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AND THE LEAK IS PROGRESSING IMMENSELY. I HAVE ALL THE CO2 AND NOX POISON SYMPTOMS. THERE IS A NOXIOUS SMELL, SINCE CO2 IS ODORLESS, THE SMELL IS NO2 OR NOX. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE DOWNPIPE OFF THE TURBO AND THE FLANGES HOLDING THE PARTS TOGETHER. I WANT SOMEONE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE DIES AND IT GOES UNNOTICED, IF IT HAS NOT HAPPENED ALREADY. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE DOWNPIPE OFF THE TURBO AND THE FLANGES HOLDING THE PARTS TOGETHER ARE DEFECTIVE. SINCE THE PARTS ARE MADE IN CHINA, I WAS WONDERING HOW THEY COULD BE DEFECTIVE. This truck has never been wrecked or hit anything. This vehicle has 85000 miles on it and its supposed to be a diesel farm truck. It appears the front end was made with parts and material that is not in compliance with industry standards. I was told by the dealership mechanic that the front end could collapse going down the road and injure someone when it collapses. This is on the front end of the truck, the entire front suspension is inadequately equipped with components to maintain the structural integrity of the suspension system.

Had new Western Wideout snowplow (recommended by western) installed by Western dealership on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd with snow plow prep package. Vehicle's Instrument cluster, HVAS, Radio and other electrical systems cut out while operating snowplow. GM is well aware of this issue which has been discussed and documented per GM Service Bulletin No.: PIT5387C (Feb 2016)- PIT5387P (10/17/2024), as well as GM Upfitter Integration UI Bulletin #124k (11/7/2019). Western states the fix for this issue is for GM to supply and install a wiring harness (per the above GM bulletins) GM dealerships as well as GM consumer assistance hotline state that GM part number 84043394 (fitting 2014-2019 vehicles) referenced to in PIT5387 and other bulletins has been discontinued. Therefore GM can not nor will ever be able to obtain or install this wiring harness in the future. GM Upfitter Integration Bulletin #124K instructs to install a different part number 84288774 VYU Snow Low Jumper harness per the latest Version of GM Service Bulletin PIT5387. "Note: that this jumper harness and installation will be provided (one time) without charge." GM dealerships state PN 84288774 does not appear in their system as a valid GM part. Parts. The official GM parts store at [XXX] , list this part but shows it does not fit this vehicle. Therefore neither GM nor Western is able to provide any actionable solution to this KNOWN safety issue. Western (and other manufactures) still manufacturing, recommending and installing snowplows for this specific vehicle. GM, manufactured, sold, promoted, advertises and continues to recommend snowplows to be installed on these vehicles (with the GM factory snow plow prep option), and continues to issue bulletins instructing GM dealerships how to fix this issue despite being fully aware GM cannot supply these parts. Therefor GM has made it impossible for GM to honor their own warranty that still currently in effect, for a KNOWN SAFTEY ISSUE. If I operate it by hand while the switch is on low or high, I can move the blades full cycles, but it does not operate on its own. I believe it is the wiper transmission at fault like many other Chevrolet models (Equinox, Impalas, etc). I HAS A SORE THROAT, COUGH, AND DIARRHEA FOR A WEEK. AFTER RETURNING HOME ON THESE TRIPS, THE SAME SICKNESS HAD TAKEN OVER MY BODY. I DON'T BELIEVE A COMMUNIST COUNTRY WOULD WANT TO HARM AN AMERICAN UNNOTICEABLY.

THE MIRRORS ALSO INTERFERE WITH THE VIEW OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AT INTERSECTIONS AND PEDESTRIANS. THE THICK POSTS BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD AND THE DOORS EXACERBATE THE PROBLEM. UPDATED 08/28/2017*JS

ENTIRE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING CAUSING LOSS OF NEEDED INFORMATION SUCH AS SPEED AND OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION. DEALER SAYS THERE IS A TSB THAT THE ENTIRE TRUCK HAS TO BE RE-FLASHED INCLUDING ALL MODULES IN THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. DURING THIS TIME, ALL SAFETY SYSTEMS FLASHED AND APPEARED TO BE INACTIVE. AIR BAG, TRACTION CONTROL, ABS, TRAILER BRAKING ETC. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED TO SEE IF A RECALL MUST HAPPEN. IF WE GOT IN AN ACCIDENT DURING THIS OCCURRENCE WHO KNOWS IF ANY OF THE SAFETY SYSTEMS ON THE VEHICLE WERE FUNCTIONING.
