2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 131 complaints across the 8 model-year 2016 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.
We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
- 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
- Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
- Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
- Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).
2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump
Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.
When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.
2017–2019 Duramax L5P
Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.
Brakes and trailer brakes
- GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
- Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.
Gas trucks
The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.
Other recalls
- Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
- Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
- Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop for a Duramax.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure
Best left to a shopSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.
Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)
Dealer (recall)Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.
Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.
May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)
Dealer (recall)Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.
Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.
May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
'Service trailer brake system' warning
Easy DIYSigns: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.
Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.
L5P cracked intercooler pipe
Easy DIYSigns: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.
Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly
Feb 2019 · #19V088000General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 GMC Sierra 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 trucks equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks. The fuel-level sensor in the front tank may stick in a low-level position, allowing the rear tank to overfill the front tank.
Risk and fix
Risk: If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. The hole will leak fuel, which in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank and, if necessary, replace the front tank, free of charge. The recall began July 30, 2019. GM's number for this recall is N182204190.

Aug 2018 · #18V578000General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, 1500 Crew Cab Special Service, Tahoe Police Pursuit/Special Service, GMC Sierra 2500, and 3500 vehicles. The brake pedal pivot nut may loosen, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative.
Risk and fix
Risk: If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will add adhesive to the nut and reinstall the nut with increased tightness, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18278. The steering is very loose. There are multiple complaints about this. I owned a 2017 GMC 2500 before this and had the same issue. I have not brought this into a shop because I’m not looking forward to the diagnosis & cost. This has been an ongoing issue for years. GM needs to recall something in the steering box. On June 27 2023 we we driving on a two lane highway pulling our travel trailer. We had driven 5 hrs the previous day parked unhooked and drove around the area with no issues. The following morning we left an were just entering the highway speed zone when the truck abruptly crossed the centreline. I managed to correct and stop n the shoulder and noticed 6-8” of play in the steering wheel. I dropped the trailer and slowly drove back to the town to try and see what the issue was. The vehicle continued to move left and right with no input from me. It was determined that the steering box was leaking and when steering was input a thumping could be felt in the tires but not in the steering wheel. The shop determined the box sector shaft adjustment shaft was nearly backed out completely. I contacted the dealership that services my truck about what should be done and they stated “replace the steering box” which we did. Had there been on coming traffic this would have been a fatal or serious collision and it is doubtful this defect would have surfaced as a causal factor.

There is excessive play in the steering causing the vehicle to wander. Problem is amplified at freeway speeds or while towing 5th-wheel. On some roads truck will pull one direction till change in road slop cause truck to swerve in opposite direction. Like many others have stated this is a dangerous situation. Problem has not been confirmed by service center on this truck, but manufacturer has issued TSB PIT5501E. There are no warnings messages.

While connected to a RV which has onboard batteries, the truck's brake controller disables the braking system if the batteries on the RV fluctuate in voltage. The truck will give an alert advising "Trailer Brakes Disabled." This has occurred multiple times while pulling my RV which weighs 16,000 pounds, making it unsafe and hard to stop using only the truck's brakes. It happened while traveling through Atlanta, GA and once in Nashville, TN. Chevrolet has at least one TSB on this for similar 2022-2024 2500 and 3500 trucks. This has been a widely reported problem on several RV forums. The truck brake controller will work again if the engine is shut off and turned back on or the trailer is unplugged and re-plugged in the truck. This problem occurred approximately 10 times on my trip from Missouri to Florida in January and about the same number of times when returning to Missouri at the end of February.

Driving my truck, without a trailer, the "Service Trailer Brakes Soon" fault came on my truck. This is a known problem that GM is aware of with their ITBC system for YEARS & have done selective recalls for. This a hazard to the motoring public. There is no warning when this fault happens while pulling a trailer & when it does pop up, you lose all trailer brakes. I had the same problem with my 2010 Silverado, after numerous visits to the dealership & thousands of dollars & filed complaints with GM & NHTSA, nothing was done. When taken to the dealership, if the fault isn't on the screen, they claim they can't find or fix the problem. I pull a 10,000 pound 5th wheel, I need trailer brakes when I apply them.

On [XXX] while traveling down [XXX] in VA I experienced a catastrophic Bosch CP4 Fuel Pump Failure. Vehicle was towed to Marion Auto Group in Marion, VA and kept for 5 weeks to repair fuel system. We paid $6,500 once we were told the repairs were complete and picked the vehicle up. Within 50 miles of driving, the fuel system error lights/codes began again and the service engine light came on. We called Marion Auto Group, they told us it was warranted for 24 months for parts and labor. We could take it to any Chevy dealer and have it looked at. We made an appt with our local Chevy dealer, Joe Bowman Chevrolet in Harrisonburg, VA. They kept the vehicle for approximately 5-6 weeks. Told us daily about the faulty repairs that Marion Auto Group had made, corrected the faulty repairs, with pictures, videos and even a coffee cup full of bad bolts and weld pieces that they replaced. Marion Auto Group agreed to pay Joe Bowman Chevrolet $5,500 in reimbursement for the work they performed to correct Marion Auto Groups work. When I got in the truck to bring it home and started it, the service engine light came on. They pulled it back in the shop, ran a diagnostic and said we needed some type of sensor ($900) so we scheduled an appt to have that done. Then we took the truck to Tennessee, fuel system failure lights and codes immediately came on. When I stopped to eat, it wouldn't start back. Took the truck to Tarr Chevrolet in Jefferson City TN, they diagnosed it as needing a new fuel line (from prev faulty fuel system) changed it ($1,700) and we headed back home with all the fuel system warning lights flashing again. Took it back to Joe Bowman Chevrolet in Harrisonburg where it's been sitting for over 7 weeks while GM decides if they should cover the entire new fuel system that it needs again ($19,000) because it's never been properly repaired since the initial catastrophic failure. Almost 7 months and $14,,600 in previous repairs.......Please HELP US! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Probable High Pressure Fuel Pump (CP4) failure resulting in the vehicle stalling without warning. This event has not yet occurred, however due to the high number of vehicles involved in the Stellantis recall which are using the same CP4 pumps which are known to fail, I am scared to drive my truck as the CP4 pump may fail at any time. I have spoken to MANY other GM truck owners who have experienced this failure and it has cost them tens of thousands of dollars. Friday October 8th 2021, my truck shut off in the middle of Chesnee SC within 1/4 mile after filling up with diesel fuel at the Hot Spot in Chesnee. I had it towed to Burns Chevrolet in Gaffney SC for analysis. They determine it was the result of contamination in the fuel and that is not a warranty issue. I would agree that is not the responsibility of Chevrolet and I authorized them to make the repairs. They did what you would normally expect with the exception of one thing. They came back and said they had to replace the fuel transfer line between the fuel tanks. Said it was kinked. I questioned how water in the fuel could cause that to happen but they said the contamination was the root cause and I had to pay to fix that as well. I requested a sample of the contamination and all parts replaced. That charge was included on the invoice and I paid it. There are other issues with the quality of the service which included returning the next day because the water contamination light came on again. They had to bleed the newly installed fuel filter there in the parking lot and the light went off. When I got home and inspected the replaced parts, I found that the fuel transfer line not only was kinked, but also ruptured. I just retired from an OEM as a quality specialist, and many of my parts were safety critical. I would be willing to bet that the Tier 1 supplier does not have a ruptured fuel line ranked very high on their FEMA plan due to the probability of water causing a kink little on a rupture, but according to the Chevrolet technician that was the root cause, so they own it. I called Chevrolet corporate and informed them of my plan to report this incident. They opened an incident report, but failed to take any action to address my concerns. You will find when you check the dealers repairs to this vehicle, it has had several issues related to fuel problems. Due to space limitations on this page, I cannot tell you the whole story. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH HAULING A GOOSE NECK FLATBED DUEL TANDEM TRAILER, THE POWER BUS BAR SHORTED. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS A FAILURE WITH A LOOSE WIRE ASSOCIATED WITH THE STARTER. THE RADIO WOULD NOT TURN OFF AND THE CONTACT WAS LOCKED IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER TIGHTENED THE WIRES AND REPLACED ALL OF THE BUS BARS. THE NEXT MORNING, WITHIN LESS THAN 20 MILES, THE BUS BARS FAILED AGAIN. THE BRAKE, TRACTION CONTROL, AND OTHER WARNING INDICATORS AND GAUGES ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS LOCKED IN THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO MOVE THE KEY BACK AND FORTH AS WELL AS USE THE KEY FOB TO EXIT THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE LEVER WOULD NOT RELEASE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER A SECOND TIME. THE DEALER FAILED TO ROUTE THE WIRES CORRECTLY, IN WHICH THE EDGE OF THE BRACKET RUBBED A HOLE IN THE POWER CABLE. THE TAILGATE FRACTURED AND SHORTED DUE TO THE FAILURE, BUT THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO REPLACE THE PART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWO ADDITIONAL TIMES, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE AND DIAGNOSE THE FAILURES. WHEN THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER A FOURTH TIME, THE DEALER REPLACED THE AIR INTAKE HEATER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.

Please open a recall for the CP4 High Pressure Fuel Pump for 2011-2016 GM trucks using this HPFP. Thank you,

IN REVERSE IT WILL SPEED UP TO 5 MPH WITHOUT NOTICE. AT ALL TIMES, INCLUDING WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAKES A SQUEAKING SOUND WHICH IS NOT ONLY IRRITATION, BUT A SIGN OF SOME SORT OF PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ITSELF. TOOK IT INTO DEALERSHIP UNDER WARRANTY STILL AND THEY CLAIM THAT THIS DEFECT IS NORMAL SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY FOUND THE SAME CONDITION ON ALL OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES THAT THEY CHECKED. I SUGGEST THAT ALL OF THESE VEHICLE SUFFER THE SAME DEFECT. THIS IS A TELLTALE SIGN OF A PROBLEM, WHAT IF THE PEDAL WERE TO BECOME STUCK WHEN DEPRESSED? DEALERSHIP SAID THEY ARE UNABLE TO LUBRICATE IT OR MODIFY IT. UNWILLING TO DO ANY OTHER REPAIR ABOUT THIS. CLAIMS IT IS "A NORMAL CONDITION". ONLINE FORUMS SUGGEST THAT OTHERS DEALERS HAVE MADE UNIT REPLACEMENTS AND/OR MODIFICATIONS TO FIX THE NOISE.

WELL FRIDAY HAS PASSED I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO I USE THIS TRUCK TO MAKE MY LIVING AND I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY AND THE PRE MATURE WEAR ON THE TRUCKS FRONT END COMPONENTS. THERE IS A STRANGE VIBRATION IN THE FRONT END AND IT PULLS TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER ON THE FREEWAY THE DEALER HAS ALIGNED THE FRONT END WITH NO RESULTS.

2016 SILVERADO 3500 EQUIPPED WITH "DIGITAL STEERING ASSIST" THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. AT APPROXIMATELY 11,000 MILES STEERING BECAME EXTREMELY LOOSE WITH ABOUT 3-4 INCHES OF FREE PLAY AT THE STEERING WHEEL. TOOK TO 1ST DEALER, STEERING GEAR BOX WAS REPLACED ACCORDING TO CHEVROLET TSB AND SYSTEM WORKED AS DESIGNED FOR APPROXIMATELY 3-4K MILES. AT THAT TIME STEERING AGAIN BECAME LOOSE BUT NOT AS BAD AS THE FIRST TIME, ABOUT 1-2 INCHES OF FREE PLAY AT THE WHEEL WITH WHAT FEELS LIKE TOO MUCH POWER STEERING, VERY LIGHT, DANGEROUSLY LIGHT STEERING. VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER 2, SECOND REPAIR ATTEMPT DEALER STATED SYSTEM WORKING AS DESIGNED, AT THIS TIME THE DIGITAL STEERING ASSIST WORKED AS IT SHOULD FROM 0 MPH TO 45 MPH ABOUT 1-2 INCHES OF FREE PLAY AT THE WHEEL WITH WHAT FEELS LIKE TOO MUCH POWER STEERING WITH VERY LIGHT STEERING FROM 46-74 MPH, THEN WORKS AS DESIGNED FROM 75 MPH ON. I WENT FOR A TEST DRIVE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER, HE STATED "I FEEL EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING TIGHT FROM 0-45 THEN LIGHT FROM 46-74 THEN TIGHT FROM 75 ON BUT THE SYSTEM IS WORKING AS DESIGNED". IN SPITE OF THIS THEY CHANGED STEERING GEAR BOX AGAIN, 3RD PART, WITH SAME RESULT. WORKS AS IT SHOULD FROM 0 MPH TO 45 MPH ABOUT 1-2 INCHES OF FREE PLAY AT THE WHEEL WITH WHAT FEELS LIKE TOO MUCH POWER STEERING, VERY LIGHT STEERING FROM 46-74 MPH, THEN WORKS AS DESIGNED FROM 75 ON. TRUCK IS USED TO PULL 9.000 LBS ENCLOSED TRAILER. PULLING ENCLOSED TRAILER AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS IN WINDS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND REQUIRES EXHAUSTING CONCENTRATION AND CAUSES SEVERE FATIGUE AFTER ONLY 150-200 MILES. THIS IS THE VERY THING DIGITAL STEERING ASSIST WAS SUPPOSED TO ELIMINATE. VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE BETWEEN THE SPEEDS OF 45-75, AND ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHILE ACCELERATING OR DECELERATING THROUGH THE 44-46 MPH RANGE WHILE TURNING DUE TO SUDDEN CHANGE IN STEERING PRESSURE FROM SYSTEM SUCH AS ON/OFF RAMPS

Safety ratings
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings from government crash tests. Ratings can differ by cab style and 2WD/4WD.
NHTSA hasn't published star ratings for this truck. Many heavy-duty pickups aren't included in NHTSA's crash-test program, so this doesn't mean the truck is unsafe.
