2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 245 complaints across the 8 model-year 2017 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

  • Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

    Feb 2019 · #19V088000

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 GMC Sierra 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 trucks equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks. The fuel-level sensor in the front tank may stick in a low-level position, allowing the rear tank to overfill the front tank.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. The hole will leak fuel, which in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank and, if necessary, replace the front tank, free of charge. The recall began July 30, 2019. GM's number for this recall is N182204190.

  • Seat Belts:Front:Retractor

    Sep 2017 · #17V567000

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks. The front seat belt retractor assemblies were built with the incorrect torsion bar. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

    Risk and fix

Risk: The seat belt retractors may not perform as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front seat belt retractor assemblies, free of charge. The recall began March 24, 2021. • Air Bags:Frontal

    Sep 2016 · #16V651000

In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

    Risk and fix

Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

The touchscreen malfunctions intermittently. My vehicle currently has 36,687 miles and this problem has persisted for a while and is getting worse. It has been to the dealer several times and has been reprogrammed. The dealer now is telling me they don’t know what to do. The problem is the touchscreen develops a mind of its own and it starts calling people of the phone contact list or my personal favorite is the radio turns itself on at almost full volume. At other times it tries to contact Onstar when not needed or it mutes the phone call. It’s bad enough that I’m no longer able to use hands free calling in my vehicle. All of these actions either scare you as it is not expected or they require you to take you’re eyes off the road to shut off the radio, unmute the call, or to cancel the call. P.S. To me it does appear to be worse the warmer it is.

The complaint is against Reading Truck Body, LLC regarding safety concerns left unresolved and property damage incurred because of the recall remedy work (NHTSA Campaign Number 18E-021) performed on my 2017 Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab service truck by Reading Truck Body, LLC. In May 2020, I was notified by Reading Truck Body, LLC of a safety recall specific to the aluminum service body on my truck. Following the initial remedy “patch” work done by the company, I was shocked to discover damages to the rear crossmember and compromising cracks in the welding of the body, as well as to the integrity and functionality of the wiring harnesses on my vehicle. Despite assurances that these damages would be addressed, I have been met with delays, unresponsiveness, and ultimately a subpar replacement body that does not meet the quality and craftsmanship of the original. The replacement body not only fails to match the size and finish of the original, but also poses serious safety risks due to missing bolts, faulty wiring harnesses, and overall poor construction. Despite my repeated attempts to seek resolution through the company’s Recall and Warranty departments, I have been met with dismissive treatment, unfounded accusations, and a refusal to address the issues at hand. This has not only caused financial loss and property damage but has also taken a toll on my emotional well-being and business operations. As a concerned customer, I am requesting your support to hold Reading Truck Body, LLC accountable for their actions in this complaint and fully remedy the recall. To do so, I request they replace the service body with one of equal quality, size, and finish as my original. Proper powder coating and meticulous craftsmanship are essential to restoring the value and integrity of my vehicle. I urge you to help rectify these issues promptly and help me ensure Reading Truck Body, LLC addresses the safety concerns outlined in my complaint. Supporting documentation attached

THE TIRES CHIP AWAY THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE SURFACE OF THE THREAD, LEAVING VOIDS AND GASHES ON THE SURFACE. WE DRIVE ON PAVED ROADS, SO THERE REALLY SHOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE WITH EXCESSIVE WEAR SUCH AS DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. I'VE NOTICED SINCE THE FIRST MONTH OF OWNER SHIP BACK IN 2018, THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY TRANSMISSION. I OWN A 2017 CHEVY SILVERADO WITH THE 8 SPEED TRANSMISSION. NOT ONLY HAD IT BEEN DISCOURAGING, IT'S DISTURBING, AND POSSIBLY EVEN UNSAFE. FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR THERE IS A HARD SHIFT IN THE TRANSMISSION. AND THE SAME PROBLEM IS FROM 2ND TO 1ST GEAR. THE VEHICLE MAKES A LOUD CLUNK AND IT JERKS SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE FACT I SPENT $50,000 ON THIS TRUCK BRAND NEW AND HAVE GOT NOWHERE WITH THE PROBLEM IS OUTRAGEOUS. I ALWAYS BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN, BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WILL MOVE IT RADICALLY. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO MY DEALERSHIP THEY SAID IT WAS 'LEFT IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE' RIDICULOUS LIES. AND IF THAT WAS THE CASE WHY DID THEY 'UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER.' REGARDLESS, ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS FROM GM HAVE BEEN SWEPT UNDER THE RUG. THE PROBLEM HAS NEVER STOPPED. I'VE GOTTEN REPLIES FROM SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES AT THE DEALERSHIP SAYING 'THEY ALL DO THAT' OR 'IT'S FINE' SO TIRED OF GETTING NOWHERE. GM SHOULD BE REPLACING EVERY SINGLE 8 SPEED TRANSMISSION. I AM WORRIED THAT MY TRANSMISSION WILL FAIL AT ANY TIME. NEW VEHICLES SHOULD NOT DRIVE LIKE THIS.

I PURCHASED A NEW (175 MILES) 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO LS 4X4 FROM A DEALERSHIP ON 2/10/2017. I NOTICED THE RIDE WAS A BIT BUMPY ON THE 80 MILE RIDE HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT. THE NEXT TIME I DROVE IT WAS 2 WEEKS LATER (I WAS ON BUSINESS TRAVEL IN BETWEEN AND LET THE TRUCK SIT IN MY GARAGE), AND I DROVE IT AROUND TOWN ON 2/25/2017. IN ADDITION TO A MINOR ROUGH IDLE, IT WAS VERY BUMPY. IT WOULD SHAKE AT VIRTUALLY ALL SPEEDS. AFTER MY 5 MINUTE DRIVE FROM THE GROCERY STORE, I LITERALLY FELT DIZZY AND ILL. THE NEXT MORNING ON 2/26/2018, I DROVE IT TO WORK (25 MILES), AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME FEELINGS OF MOTION SICKNESS. I AM A CERTIFIED AUTO TECHNICIAN WITH NEARLY 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE, AND HAVE WORKED ON ALL COMPONENTS OF CARS AND TRUCKS (ENGINE REPAIR / OVERHAUL, TRANSMISSION, SUSPENSION, BRAKES, ELECTRICAL, HEATING / AC, ETC.). I'VE WORKED ON TRUCKS SPANNING A WIDE RANGE OF YEARS WITH VARIOUS ISSUES AND MILEAGES (LOW MILEAGE TO +250,000 MILES). I HAVE NEVER FELT A MORE UNCOMFORTABLE RIDE IN A TRUCK IN MY YEARS OF TEST DRIVING VEHICLES (BEFORE AND AFTER REPAIR) THAN I HAVE WITH THIS NEW 2017 SILVERADO. I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT LANDERS MCLARTY CHEVROLET IN HUNTSVILLE, AL, AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS SAFETY CONCERN COULD NOT BE ADDRESSED AT THEIR DEALERSHIP UNTIL THE TRUCK HAD AT LEAST 500 MILES . I INFORMED THEM OF MY CONCERNS ABOUT DRIVING IT UNTIL THEN AS I HAVE UNDER 400 MILES ON IT, AND THEY TOLD ME TO DRIVE 80 MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. UNBELIEVABLE! AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, THIS "MOTION SICKNESS" ISSUE IS A KNOWN ISSUE BY GENERAL MOTORS, AND DOES NOT HAVE A PROVEN DOCUMENTED FIX IN PLACE TO THIS DAY.

Since the purchase of the truck the vehicle does emergency breaking at different times from what seems to be faults sensor input. #1 on freeway onramp specialty circular 2 lane, if on the inside lane the truck will alarm and drop the throttle out. This also happens some time at the 3/4 point of the on ramp when cars on the freeway are perpendicular in front of the vehicle. # 2 the same alarm and throttle dropout happen on the freeway randomly and on two lane roads when vehicle are approaching on a 2 line road. I don’t know if break lights are activated, but I have had people honk at me for the deceleration.
