2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 112 complaints across the 8 model-year 2020 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.
We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
- Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
- Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
- 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.
10-speed transmission
Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.
- GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
- Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.
When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.
Brakes and trailer brakes
Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.
Recalls to check
- Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
- Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
- Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
- Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
- Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN. Many of these trucks have several.
- Ask a Chevy or GMC dealer for the service history and remaining factory warranty.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

I recieved a recall notice from Chevrolet stating they needed to install a software update to the truck which will warn if a potential rear wheel lock up is about to occur due to faulty transmission valve body- which was stated that they do not have a fix for. After software update was installed- I was driving about 35 mile per hour on the trip home, and the truck abruptly downshifted very hard, momentarily locking up rear wheels, and the check engine light came on, and the vehicle message came up stating the vehicle was placed in a reduced propulsion mode(limp mode). The next day it did it again on my short drive to work of 2 miles. I took into dealership and they informed me that the valve body had failed- as mentioned in the recall notice. It is now 1 month later and I still do not have my truck back, the part is back ordered, and they have no idea when it will be fixed. I am without my primary form of transportation.

The sudden rear wheel lock up recall that GM has released for the 2020+ Silverado's with the 10-speed transmission does not go far enough. The recall simply reprograms the PCM to alert the driver 10,000 miles prior to the valve in the valve body failing, puts the vehicle into limp mode, and extended the warranty on the valve body to 15 years or 150,000 miles. GM states there is no fix available and this is not correct. NextGen Drivetrain has developed a fix for this per their website [XXX] ). On their site they also provide videos of trucks experiencing the lock up where it seems that the vehicle downshifts to 2-nd gear at high speeds and creates a violent jolt. This is extremely troubling to me as these vehicles are meant to tow, and I am very fearful that this issue will happen while towing a long trailer while my family and I are traveling and putting them in danger of an accident. It is very concerning to me that NHTSA would allow for this type of a "FIX". I am not sure if you have seen the videos of this issue happening, or know that a fix does seem to have been developed. I ask that you please reopen this investigation and revisit the way GM is handling this recall, and look into the fix that NextGen drivetrain has developed. During operation of the vehicle at approximately 45mph and sudden stopping/ breaking is required, truck fails to do so. It is a partial loss of brake pressure and a loud "whale cry" type sound that appears to be coming from under the hood. I have had it happen twice just recently; I have taken to dealer, and they cannot replicate the issue. I have caught the sound the second time on video. To summarize truck loses partial breaking power, pedal does not bottom out, but it feels like there is not as much pressure being applied to the breaks when needed. Once the sound stops all braking returns to normal.

I haul vehicles for a living. My rear wheels locked up and my truck came to a complete stop while I was on the highway. Luckily I was able to pull over and no one was behind me. It has happened a total of 3 times. There is no fix for my recall yet. I’m terrified to drive, but this is how I make my living. What happens when it rains and my wheels lock up again. My life is on the line. I went to Chevrolet service they said they have no idea what could have caused this. Then a couple weeks later I get an open recall with no remedy. What am I suppose to do?

We tow a 2024 Grand Design Solitude 310GK with our 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500 diesel truck. We are getting frequent but intermittent loss of our trailer brakes during towing. As you can imagine this is a serious safety issue. We will be towing and receive a message on the display "Trailer Brakes Disconnected" then typically followed by "Service Trailer Brakes". This has been happening more frequently over the past 3 months. Imagine driving down a hill with a 15K pound rv pushing you and there are NO brakes on the 5th wheel. It is extremely scary and dangerous. I've researched on the internet and Facebook and there seems to be a "Technical Bulletin" from GM Bulletin No.: 23-NA-149 Date: September, 2023 recommending the replacement of the Trailer Brake Control Module. I've called to have the dealer replace our brake control module but it is not covered because it is a "Bulletin" and not a "recall". This is absurd and the manufacturer should take care of this known issue.

I purchased a certified pre-owned 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD (6.6 Gas) November 2021. Within the next few weeks, I noticed brake squeaking that kept getting worse and the truck braking system would not stop like the 2500 I had traded in when I purchased the 3500HD. I had to adjust the trailer brake gain control up to as high as 9 or 9.5, should not have to adjust that high. I had trouble stopping at intersections and quick /emergency braking situations while pulling our trailer. This tells me the truck braking system is not working properly. Prior to leaving on a trip, I was having squeaking noise from the brakes that got louder and louder and more frequent. The dealer (Champion Chevrolet) checked the truck and brakes and told me it had the wrong brake pads and had replaced them. The first time I pulled off the interstate on my trip to Florida, the brakes began to squeak as they did before. This happened during the entire trip. Over the next few weeks after returning from my trip I had a couple of close calls trying to stop at traffic signals. My breaks would not stop me and I went into the intersection barely missing other vehicles. I am almost to the point of parking the truck until the dealer can make repairs that will fix the issues, but we use the truck to pull a trailer that is a major part on our income. I’ve had the truck back to the dealership I purchased the truck from and they keep saying it is a brake pad issue. They have changed the pads twice so far (I think), and within days the squeaking and noise starts again. Periodically I keep getting a message (service trailer brake system) on my dash display that is difficult to get the warning to stop displaying. The trailer brakes had been checked several times and I have hooked other trucks to the trailer and it works fine. So, the issue is with my truck and the braking system. Back window or back cab cover seal is defective and caused water to leak in the cab and soak the carpet in the entire floorboard there are water stains on the headliner mold growing under back storage compartment. There are numerous other reports of this issue on different internet forums. I have the truck at the shop with gm saying they will cover 25% of the costs. I feel this to be a manufacturer defect. This isn't caused by normal wear and tear.
