2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 127 complaints across the 8 model-year 2018 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 GMC Sierra 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 trucks equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks. The fuel-level sensor in the front tank may stick in a low-level position, allowing the rear tank to overfill the front tank.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. The hole will leak fuel, which in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank and, if necessary, replace the front tank, free of charge. The recall began July 30, 2019. GM's number for this recall is N182204190.

I’ve heard all the horror stories about faulty electrical issues. I’m chasing an issue now on my 2018 with ONLY 87,000 miles after spending a bunch of money on batteries hub assemblies random control modules to try to fix an issue of stabilitrak, traction control, abs, trailer brakes, power steering etc all going off every 3 seconds. Grounds have all been re done to bare metal nothing is fixing the issue. Steering wheel about flew out of my hands going 65mph when the power steering message along with all the others on the dtc while dinging annoying the shit out of me. I’ve bought nothing but gm trucks my whole adult life and I’ll never do it again. Thing is a piece of shit and you all should be doing something to fix it. I’ve seen people have the fix by replacing a tail light bulb speed sensors ecbm abs modules trailer brake modules harnesses the list is endless. Someone is going to die when they crash from some bullshit electrical problem that can’t be chased down because it’s always something different. The money we pay for these trash trucks is insane for the problems like this that you won’t recall. That’s it these trucks suck and I’ll never buy another one. Trash.

WHILE PULLING A VARIETY OF 3 DIFFERENT TRAILERS, THE INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL DOES NOT PROPERLY SEND OUTPUT TO THE TRAILER BRAKES. THIS CAUSES THE TRUCK (TOW VEHICLE) TO DO ALMOST ALL OF THE BRAKING WORK ON ITS OWN. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS I'VE HAD THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATE ON THE TRUCK WHILE TRYING TO STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT BECAUSE I WASN'T GETTING ADEQUATE BRAKING FROM THE TRAILER DUE TO THE INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL FAILING TO SEND ADEQUATE POWER TO THE TRAILER BRAKES. THE GAIN ON THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL WAS SET PROPERLY FOR THE LOAD BEING PULLED ON THE TRAILER AND THE GROSS COMBINATION WEIGHT OF THE TRUCK/TRAILER/LOAD DID NOT EXCEED THE RATED CAPACITIES OF THE TRUCK OR TRAILER. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN TO 2 DIFFERENT CHEVROLET DEALERS AND BOTH OF THEM HAVE TRIED BLAMING THE TRAILER OR THE OPERATOR. I HAVE SHOWN BOTH DEALERS THAT THE TRUCK DOES IT WITH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT TRAILERS AND PROVEN THAT IT'S NOT THE TRAILER. I HAVE MY CLASS A CDL AND HAVE BEEN PULLING TRAILERS WITH BRAKE CONTROLLERS FOR 20 YEARS. THIS INSTANCE HAPPENS AT ALL DIFFERENT SPEEDS OF TRAVEL WHILE DRIVING, WHETHER IT BE 5 MPH OR 65 MPH OR ANYWHERE IN BETWEEN. ALSO, WHILE SITTING STILL AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL, THE TRUCK PUTS NO BRAKING POWER TO THE TRAILER WHICH IS HORRIBLE WHEN YOU ARE SITTING ON ANY KIND OF SLOPED GRADE. FROM A COMMERCIAL DRIVER STANDPOINT, THIS TRUCK DOES NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM PASS A DOT SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO THIS ISSUE. THE TRUCK HAS ROUGHLY 37,000 MILES, IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF, AND IS FLEET MAINTAINED. THE ATTACHED PHOTO IS WHILE SITTING STILL WITH A LOADED GOOSENECK TRAILER HOOKED TO THE TRUCK.

WHEN THE TRUCK IS TURNED OFF IT SOMETIMES CAN TAKE ANYWHERE FROM 2 MINUTES TO OVER 1 HOUR TO RESTART. WHEN THIS ISSUE OCCURS AND THE KEY IS TURNED TO START THE VEHICLE ALL YOU WILL HEAR IS A "CLICK" SOUND COMING FROM WHAT I ASSUME IS THE STARTER. WHILE NOT STARTING, EVERYTHING ELSE ELECTRICAL IN THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE. ALTHOUGH THIS TRUCK WAS DELIVERED NEW IN DECEMBER OF 2017(BUILD DATE OF 8/17), IT WAS NOT PUT ON THE ROAD AND IN SERVICE(BUILT OUT AS A TOW TRUCK) UNTIL MID MAY OF 2018. ALTHOUGH THIS STARTING ISSUE DID NOT BEGIN WITH MY TRUCK UNTIL SOMETIME IN FEBRUARY/MARCH 2019, WE HAVE ANOTHER TRUCK THAT IS THE EXACT SAME MODEL (BUILD DATE OF 2/18) THAT HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS NOW. THAT SECOND TRUCK WAS FINALLY TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND A SPECIFIC PROBLEM SO THEY REPLACED THE STARTED. THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THE DRIVER RECENTLY REPLACED THE BATTERY JUST TO TRY TO ELIMINATE THE POTENTIAL CAUSE OF THIS ISSUE BUT THAT YIELDED NO POSITIVE RESULTS EITHER. WE ARE AT A LOSS AND THIS ISSUE IS LITERALLY COSTING US MONEY!! IN GENERAL, THIS NON-STARTING ISSUE HAPPENS A COUPLE TIMES A WEEK.

The high pressure fuel pump failed and sent metal particles throught the fuel system. All fuel components except for the injectors are available. The engine stalled while driving at speed forcing me to stop and call a tow truck on the side of the road. Mileage at failure was 81340. Preston hood Chevrolet diagnosed the HP4 failure and replaced the entire fuel system, noting metal contamination in all areas. The component has not been inspected. The truck had a slight grinding noise when shifting into 4th on throttle. Took it to a firestone and the techs noted its possibly just shifting hard, no issues found. The grinding noises ultimately was the HP4 failing. No warning lamps or other indications of a problem were present prior to the catastrophic failure.

WHILE PULLING A 40' GOOSENECK TRAILER ON THE HIGHWAY AT POSTED SPEED THE BALL HITCH ON THE BED OF THE TRUCK CAME DETACHED FROM THE TRUCK. TRAILER NECK SLAMMED INTO THE CENTER OF THE BED. I HAVE AN OEM CROWNLINE AFTERMARKET FLAT BED ON MY TRUCK. ONCE THE TRAILER WAS REMOVED THE BALL HITCH FELL TO THE GROUND. INVESTIGATION FOUND LITTLE TO NO WELD PRESENT.

Trash.

MY 3500 HD SRW HAS A POWER FOLD BUTTON FOR THE SIDE MIRRORS. WHILE PASSING A SEMI TRUCK AT 70 MPH ON I-20, I WENT TO ADJUST THE RIGHT MIRROR SLIGHTLY. I ACCIDENTALLY PUSHED THE POWER FOLD BUTTON ( IT IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE LEFT AND RIGHT MIRROR ADJUSTMENT BUTTON ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR ). THE SIDE MIRRORS FOLDED IN. I TRIED TO RETURN THE MIRRORS BACK TO THEIR OPERATING POSITION BUT THEY WOULD ONLY UNFOLD A SLIGHT AMOUNT DUE TO THE WIND RESISTANCE. SINCE I WAS PULLING MY FIFTH WHEEL MY REAR VIEW MIRROR WAS USELESS. I DID NOT HAVE ANYONE WITH ME AT THE TIME TO HELP FORCE THE MIRROR OUT SO I AM NOW COMPLETELY BLIND AND BESIDE A SEMI IN THE LEFT HAND PASSING LANE. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY GET SOMEONE HURT SERIOUSLY. YOU CAN NOT PULL OVER SINCE YOU ARE IN THE LEFT LANE, CAN NOT SLOW DOWN SINCE YOU ARE ON AN INTERSTATE HWY AND HAVE NO SIGHT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR VEHICLE.
