2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 127 complaints across the 8 model-year 2018 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

Rear defroster seemed to short circuit and over heated causing my back window to break. There was no warning, no light that alerted me to this going on. I had it inspected by a local Chevy dealership and they have indeed confirmed that it short circuited and caused the damage to my rear window. They also removed the fuse to prevent anything further from happening and told me it could have completely caught on fire.

2018 Chevy Silverado 2500Diesel Duramax (63,000 miles & Garage kept) While pulling 37' camper on flat terrain, Push Rod bent and broke in half - violently shaking and missing; Engine was ruined. Engine light did not appear until after it started shaking. Luckily this happened before crossing over steep mountain where we would not have been able to get off road or control vehicle and camper behind us. Truck was towed to Chevy dealership; had to wait until 10 days to learn extent of damage. Repair cost was going to be $26,000 and though our truck's trade in value was $37000 before this event, we were offered just $12000 for trade in. Though we had been led to believe that a Chevy Duramax was highly regarded for durability and longevity, we decided to purchase a RAM Truck. NO MORE CHEVYS for us! Contacted Chevy Customer Assistance but because we traded, they would not offer any financial assistance because we took the dealership's offer and traded the next day. We just couldn't stand a $26000 hit on an 8 year old vehicle and had to absorb that amount with our trade in.

The truck kept going into limp mode and when taken to the dealership it was found to have metal in the fuel. According to the report from the dealership they stated that this indicated the injection pump had come apart internally and sent metal throughout the system. It has since been repaired at a high cost to myself. The generation of truck made before mine had a recall for the same thing and I feel that they have not fixed the problem or it wouldn't have happened to my truck. Seems like a manufacturing defect. When in limp mode the truck does not operate at the speed limit required for highway driving. There was no indication prior to the failure.

I READ THAT CHEVROLET OFFERED TO INSTALL AN ON OFF SWITCH FOR THE AIR BAGS, THE WRONG THING TO DO IN MY OPINION. THE SEAT BELT WARNING SYSTEM SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT NOT AN OPTION.

70,000 mile complete transmission failure despite being serviced on-time, as per the guidance. Failure happened while driving and it became dangerous to try to maintain highway speed. Quoted $8390 to replace by the local Chevy dealership and quoted 4-6 weeks delivery for backordered parts. This is an unacceptable situation that GM and other manufacturers have artificially manufactured. They design everything to the bare minimum to save fractions of a cent per part, and then they intentionally make the parts unavailable and then the dealership pushes you to trade the broken vehicle in at a massive loss just so you can get back on the road in a newer, more expensive vehicle. This sort of behavior is causing immense financial harm to American families.

While hauling a trailer I received a warning tone and looked down to read the message, "reduced engine power", and the service engine light appeared all at the same time. The engine shutoff at the same time I received the warnings and didn't allow me to safely pull off the road.. I lost power steering, power braking, and controlling the vehicle and trailer while coasting to the sholder was difficult. Fortunately it was early in the morning and I was only traveling 35 mph on a straight road, and no other vehicles were on the road. If I was on an interstate traveling 55+ mph or on a curvy road it would have caused an accident or worse. I was very fortunate. This was the first time I experienced this problem and hadn't received prior warning messages or lights. The truck would not restart and the truck and trailer were towed to the dealership. The diagnosis was a failed "Fuel Pump Control Module." After waiting several weeks the replacement Fuel Pump Control Module did solved the problem. I kept the failed Fuel Pump Control Module and is available for inspection. Please investigate thoroughly! I was extremely fortunate the part failed when it did and I was able to walk away unharmed.

THE ENGINE DIED, AND I LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. AFTER WRESTLING THE TRUCK TO THE SIDE FO THE ROAD, A PASSERBY DROVE BACKWARDS IN TRAFFIC TO ALERT ME THAT THE TRUCK WAS BURNING. IF NOT FOR HIM, WE MIGHT NOT HAVE GOTTEN OUT IN TIME. FLAMING FUEL WAS DRIPPING DOWN FROM IN THE CHASSIS, DRIVER SIDE, IN FRONT OF REAR WHEEL, APPROXIMATELY WHERE THE FUELING RECEPTACLE WAS. Description of Safety Defect: I purchased this 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD from Carvana. Within 14 days of vehicle delivery, an authorized, in-network warranty repair facility (Monro) diagnosed a critical safety defect in the steering linkage, identifying failed outer tie rod ends and a failed pitman arm. Carvana’s warranty administrator, SilverRock (Claim C102648992), acknowledged the structural steering failure by approving the pitman arm and idler arm replacement but explicitly denied the required tie rod ends, claiming "no failure." The vehicle has since been released back to me with the failed tie rod ends still installed. On this heavy-duty truck, the steering linkage has now deteriorated to a catastrophic failure point. With the truck parked on the ground, there is severe, excessive manual play allowing the front wheel to be physically shaken left-to-right by hand. The vehicle cannot be aligned, is structurally compromised, and is completely unsafe to operate on public roads due to the imminent risk of a total loss of steering control. Carvana and SilverRock delivered an unsafe vehicle that failed its structural inspection points, and subsequently refused to complete the safety-critical repair required under their mandatory 100-day limited warranty window, forcing a dangerous, heavy-duty vehicle back onto public roads.

I’m have 1-2” dead space in steering. It is hard to stay in lane on highway as when a road dip takes extra movement keep straight. I was told this is normal but had dealer change steering box. Replacement helped a lot but truck is starting to get the 1-2” of play once again. Seems like similar issue to 2016 model year.

While driving my vehicle I began to notice a severe shake. Upon pulling over I found the driver rear tire tread had separated and bulged to were the inner part of tread bulged about 12 inches long and approximately 2-3 inches higher than the rest of the tread. It happened a second time to the passenger rear tire in the same manner a little over 1000 miles later. Approximately 21,000 miles. Both times the vehicle shook violently. Each instance I had to purchase a new tire out of my pocket. Lt 265/60r20

THERE IS NO PASSENGER SEAT BELT WARNING AUDIO OR VISUAL. THE DEALER SAID THAT THIS VEHICLE DOESN'T HAVE A SENSOR TO TELL IF SOMEONE IS IN THE SEAT OR NOT. BUT THEY "ASSURED" ME THAT THE PASSENGER AIR BAGS STILL WOULD WORK. EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT AIR BAGS BY THEM SELVES ARE NOT AS EFFECTIVE. I READ THAT CHEVROLET OFFERED TO INSTALL AN ON OFF SWITCH FOR THE AIR BAGS, THE WRONG THING TO DO IN MY OPINION. THE SEAT BELT WARNING SYSTEM SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT NOT AN OPTION.

MY DEALER STATES THE PASSENGER AIR BAG SYSTEM IS ACTIVE FULL TIME HOWEVER IT IS ONLY MARGINALLY EFFECTIVE SHOULD THE PASSENGER FAIL TO SECURE THEIR SEAT BELT. ADDITIONALLY, THERE IS NO DASH INDICATOR SHOWING THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT BUCLKE/NO-BUCKLE STATUS AS SHOWN ON PAGE 86 OF THE 2018 SILVERADO OWNERS MANUAL WHICH DISCUSSES THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND AIRBAG STATUS INDICATOR WHICH IS NOT PRESENT IN THIS LINE OF VEHICLES. PAGE 145 OF THE 2018 SILVERADO OWNERS MANUAL STATES THERE "MAY" BE A REMINDER LIGHT NEAR THE AIRBAG STATUS INDICATOR WHICH IS NOT INSTALLED ON THIS LINE OF VEHICLES.
