Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 74 complaints across the 8 model-year 2021 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.

We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
  • Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
  • Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
  • 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.

  • GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
  • Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.

When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.

Brakes and trailer brakes

Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.

Recalls to check

  • Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
  • Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
  • Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
  • Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
  • Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)

Pulling out from a stop sign, a loud bang came from the transmission, and rear wheels momentarily locked up then truck acted like it was in neutral. Truck was able to drift to side of road. We called our GM dealer, and they told us that our warranty had expired. We had the truck towed to our certified repair shop. After review of truck, the mechanic called and said the output shaft of the transmission broke. The mechanic called GM and asked if there was any financial assistance for this problem and they said no. He ordered a transmission through GM, and we had to pay for transmission upfront. The amount was 6627.05. Since then as we researched, we found out that GM has a Goodwill assistance program that would have helped us had we known to take it to a GM dealer. With two phone calls, no one guided us on doing that. Our truck has only 38,000 miles on it and when I called GM, they said they would have been able to assist us if we had sent it to a GM dealer. We tried to explain that no one gave us that direction and now it is currently being repaired at our local garage. Can we get any assistance at all with this claim? We would appreciate any assistance you could provide for us. Thank you [XXX] and [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 10L1000 transmission had a catastrophic failure internally which caused it to rough shift, sudden down shifting, not want to shift into gear at all, and high engine rpm prior to roughly shifting. I took it to the Chevy dealers mechanic the very next business day, only to find out that from the mechanic that this is a common occurrence with Chevy transmissions in my truck and google also verified this to be a common problem. The mechanic from the Chevy dealership also stated that there was larger metal chunks than normal. My truck is available for inspection asap. The manufacturer and vin lookup contradicts the mechanic and google stating no issues or recalls for my transmission. After speaking with the manufacturer, I became highly concerned due to their unwillingness to address the obvious issues known by so many. If I wasn’t such a safe driver and immediately brought it to the mechanic, this could have caused a terrible accident leading to extreme bodily harm or death even. According to a quick google search of the 2021 Chevy 2500 transmission problems and my mechanic this is a well known problem even though Chevy manufacturers refuse to acknowledge the issue or implement a recall. There was zero warning lights or lamps to indicate this problem. I am extremely concerned with the manufacturer’s response to my concerns and their unwillingness to correct this issue before it cost someone their life. This catastrophic failure with the transmission having metal shavings throughout it and extreme damage to the transmission valve body and being well known and reported by many other customers has to be addressed. Chevy’s unwillingness to acknowledge people’s claims in this has left me with around $10,000 in monetary damages and could have lead to bodily harm or death if I would have been traveling on a main highway or interstate when it occurred. At the very least Chevy needs to be held responsible for this known and reported issue before it causes death or injury.

Operator of this vehicle was commuting and truck started to slow down and chug. Vehicle hesitated when operator applied gas pedal. -Transmission cooler inlet/outlet pipe as per Chevrolet known issues. -Safety of driver at risk as failure happened in heavy traffic, unable to pull to safety -Yes confirmed by authorized repair facility -Part inspected by authorized mechanic. -No warnings, symptoms, prior to failure.

While traveling at highway speed on the interstate in my 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD (approx. 120,000 miles), the vehicle experienced a sudden hard jolt followed by a momentary rear wheel lockup. This occurred without warning. Immediately after, the transmission defaulted into a fail-safe condition and became locked in 4th gear. The vehicle would move but could not shift properly, resulting in abnormally high RPM and engine load at highway speeds. I was forced to continue driving several miles in this condition to reach a safe exit. The unexpected drivetrain behavior and temporary wheel lockup created a serious safety risk, including potential loss of control and risk of collision. The dealership identified transmission diagnostic trouble codes P2715 and P2733 (pressure control solenoid performance). Transmission fluid was found to be burnt and contaminated with metal debris. The vehicle is subject to GM Special Coverage N242454441 for a known control valve body defect that can cause harsh shifting and reduced engine power. Although code P0747 (referenced in the bulletin) was not present, the failure involved transmission hydraulic pressure control. The dealership is replacing the valve body under the special coverage but is not addressing the internal transmission damage, stating they cannot determine whether the damage resulted from the covered defect. The sudden rear wheel lockup and transmission fail-safe condition at highway speed present a significant safety concern involving unintended drivetrain behavior.

    • Filed Feb 2026

The vehicle experienced a sudden and complete transmission failure at approximately 77,800 miles. There was no prior abuse or modification. The failure resulted in loss of normal drivability and required full transmission replacement. The transmission was replaced with a remanufactured unit due to catastrophic internal failure. Repair costs were approximately $7,000. I am aware of similar GM transmission issues and recalls affecting comparable model years and components. Although my VIN is not currently listed under a recall, the failure appears consistent with known GM transmission defect patterns. The failure occurred while the vehicle was in the middle of an intersection in heavy traffic, resulting in sudden loss of vehicle functionality. A child passenger was onboard at the time. The incident created a significant safety hazard due to loss of drivability in an active traffic environment.

The tailgate on my truck is electrically opened & closed. I've been having trouble with the tailgate opening randomly, even while driving. This has happened multiple times and can create a very dangerous situation, especially if i'm hauling something in the bed of the truck and it could possibly fall out if the tailgate were to open. Once i was hauling a bunk bed and the tailgate opened without me knowing it. Fortunately, we were driving through town on a flat road when it happened & nothing fell out. Someone behind me pulled up beside me to let me know my tailgate just opened. I recently took my truck to my local Chevy dealer & they said there was no recall on it & they wanted $170 for them just to look at it. I looked online and see recall# N232426400 for it but i've never received a notice & the dealer says there is no recall on it for my truck. (I have a video of it opening & closing by itself but it's too large to send you)

RECEIVING SERVICE TRAILER BRAKE SYSTEM. SEEMS THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH TRUCK AND SHOULD BE A RECALL THAT GM FIX AND NOT PUT ONTO CUSTOMER

    • Filed Apr 2025

The tailgate on our truck keeps automatically coming down and up on its own. It doesn’t matter if the truck is in park or drive. It doesn’t matter if it’s locked or unlocked. It will do it several times in a row. It will go half way back up and then just slam down. Unfortunately we didn’t know this was an issue as we just bought the truck a few days before we noticed it happening and it fell down and hit something in our garage causing a dent and multiple scratches as it happened overnight without us being aware of the issue. It happens when I’m going down the road, which means I cannot use the bed of my truck as things could fall out. Also, I’m limited on where I can park it. We called GM and a dealership and there’s nothing they can do since it’s not recalled unless we pay to have it fixed. So now we have a new to us truck that’s now dented because of this issue. There is no warning it’s going to happen. After the tailgate comes down I get a notification saying tailgate down when I’m driving. This happens everyday, several times a day and we’re having to avoid driving it when possible due to this issue.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - The parking brakes were engaged and would not release / yes, it is available for inspection How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I was in traffic stopped at a train track and could not move. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - Yes, the rear actuator for the brakes was faulty and had to be replaced. The warranty work was completed by the dealership Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - Unknown Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - Not prior to the problem My concern is that my parking brakes "were nonexistent" per the dealership when they were diagnosing the warning light. So, I am afraid that the truck was driving while these were engaged.

On 01/16/2026, Quirk Chevrolet completed product safety recall N242482680 for the Brake Pressure Switch Connector Fire on my vehicle. Shortly after, my vehicle would come to an abrupt stop on its own while driving. This happened twice on my way home and then the third time at home at which point, it would no longer move forward or backward. The vehicle needed to be towed to the dealership that did the recall. After researching online, I discovered this is a known issue after the recall because the recall component is faulty. One source reports the cause is an improperly manufactured jumper harness which is missing protective tape or a faulty internal C-clip in the cylinder. Another source states the post-service emergency brake issues often stem from a software update meant to enhance safety or an incomplete repair of the brake pressure switch wiring harness. The update automatically engages the parking brake. I absolutely know that the catastrophic failure of my vehicle's braking system was a direct result of the recall work; however, the dealership made me pay for the repairs out of pocket until such time as GM or Chevy makes an "official" recall on the faulty recall. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk by way of my vehicle stopping abruptly on its own. The problem has been reproduced by many sources online - just do an online search "2021 Chevy 5500 emergency brake issue after brake recall completed" and see all the results that come up corroborating my personal experience. Quirks Chevrolet in Manchester, NH inspected the vehicle. No warning lamps or messages appeared on the dash. Please contact me if you want any additional information or copies of receipts, etc. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

Took truck to dealer with concern of higher than normal braking force needed. Couldn’t verify concern. Looked today under the steering column and the brake booster is leaking fluid inside the cabin of the truck when the brake pedal goes through the firewall. There was Almost no brake fluid inside the reservoir causing the brakes to fail with no warning. Looked at similar trucks and all have brake fluid leaking from the same location. With as little as 10,000 miles. Mine has 22,000 miles and it’s failed requiring complet replacement of the brake booster. Taking to the dealership to replace the complete brake booster assembly when part is available. This is a 21 Chevy 2500 truck that pulls up to 18,000 pounds. higher than normal braking application needed, can be deadly or lead to complete brake failure whether loaded towing a trailer at a weigh of 25,000lbs or even the 7,000 pounds empty the truck weighs would reasonably result in the loss of someone’s life. Only thing that drew me to this concern was a harder application of the brake pedal and noticing brake fluid under the dashboard. Would gladly allow anyone to inspect my truck.

Similar to the issues that were on the gas version of this engine and the recall associated with it. The engine seized on the expressway. When it was towed to the dealership, they said it was catastrophic engine failure. They found a lot metal shavings in the oil pan. They did not diagnose any further due to cost. At the time it happened, there were no warning lights or check engine lights on.

first issue was around April-May 2025 when my engine started knocking and burning fuel. Warning light came on and it went right in to the dealer where I have all my maintenance done. They determined that it due to (2) faulty fuel injectors and I had them replaced at that time. In December of 2025 my engine started doing the same thing as before with the knocking and burning fuel and reduced speeds when on the highway so again it went into the dealer. It has since been in there and first was told it was the fuel injector again. They priced out the one was bad and I asked them to replace the remaining 6 fuel injectors so I didn't have this issue again in the near future. They did and the vehicle had the same issues going on. During the next inspection it was determined that the engine needed new rocker arms. These were replaced but this also did not solve the problem and the vehicle would not pass the regeneration on the engine. During the next inspection it was determined that we needed to replace a cylinder and one of the valves. I own a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Duramax diesel with approximately 100,300 miles. The truck began displaying a “Service Emissions System” warning and a countdown message that in a certain number of miles the vehicle will be limited in speed (for example to 65 mph). GM’s own Duramax diesel owner’s supplement explains that when a “Service Emission System” message appears it is accompanied by a distance-until-speed-limit countdown and that the truck will progressively limit speed first to about 65 mph and then to about 55 mph if the condition is not corrected, telling the owner to see the dealer. This creates a safety risk because the derate can occur while driving on highways or rural roads, where an unexpected limit on maximum speed can interfere with merging, passing, and keeping up with traffic. This is our only vehicle, and we must use it for important medical appointments, including cardiology and surgery-related visits. The condition started only about 300 miles beyond GM’s 5-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. I opened a case with Chevrolet / GM Corporate (Service Request No. XXX) and took the truck to Sons Chevrolet in Columbus, Georgia on November 17, 2025 for this issue and a rear wheel lockup recall. The dealer kept the truck from about 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and indicated they might need to keep it for at least two more days, but I was not given a clear written explanation of the diagnostic trouble codes or a firm repair plan. Because GM’s own manuals describe this “Service Emission System” message together with speed-limit countdowns, and because the vehicle can actively limit speed on the road if the fault is not resolved, I am concerned this represents a broader emissions/derate defect on late-model Silverado HD Duramax trucks. I request that NHTSA review similar complaints and consider whether further investigation or a safety recall is warranted. Experienced symptoms of losing consciousness, worst headache I've ever had, nausea for 5 hours, loss of feeling in body and seizing of body. Took truck to dealer to get inspected twice and nothing was found to be wrong with it. NOV 10th Took truck on another road trip and was having similar symptoms as before however had more chest pain this time so went back to hospital. Took truck back to dealer to have inspected again and was told that it was fine. Nov 18th took truck on another road trip and within 20 mins of driving had another horrible headache. Pulled over and needed to get air and ended up driving truck 4 hours home with windows and sunroof open to avoid getting carbon monoxide poisoning again. I have been ill since August and that is due to diesel and carbon monoxide poisoning every single time I drive the vehicle which is daily. The truck has been now at the dealership for 70 days without any update or improvement in the case.

Originally Chevrolet offered a 2 phase approach for this recall. First phase was to install monitoring software in the ECU and TCU to monitor for early transmission control valve premature wear. Second phase was to actually replace the suspect valve. I've just received a second correspondence from Chevrolet for this recall, now only offering Phase 1, TCU and ECU monitoring software installation. So if the monitoring software detects premature valve failure, the vehicle will be limited to 5th gear. I don't think limiting a vehicle to 5 our of 10 gears is a safe solution. If I'm on the freeway, towing 10,000 lbs, and my vehicle is limited to 5th gear, I may have to travel a very long time at way below posted speed limits before I can get to a dealer for repair. As we all know, travelling on the freeway at lower than posted speed limits can be just as dangerous as travelling above posted speed limits. And in fact, here in Idaho, if you're travelling below posted speed limits you can be fined just as if you were exceeding speed limits. I feel Chevrolet's original solution is the best. Replace the suspect valve proactively instead of actually waiting for it to fail which can possibly cause an unsafe condition.

first issue was around April-May 2025 when my engine started knocking and burning fuel. The tailgate opens by randomly. I was in a CVS parking lot walking towards my car and saw the tailgate open without any commands. A young kid running towards his mother's car was just able to avoid running into it and getting 'clotheslined'. Another vehicle found it necessary to drive around the tailgate protruding from the parking spot. I have been finding the tailgate down multiple times, and thought I may have left it open even when I was sure I didn't. I also shut my tailgate recently and noticed I have a large dent in the tailgate itself when I closed it. It may have opened on another vehicle, or it was open when I was backing up assuming it was closed. After reading online I came across many owners having the exact same problems with the exact same truck. GM has told me the problem is VIN specific, and my VIN was not listed; therefore, no recall notice ever sent out to me.

It opens and closes randomly , I was going on to the freeway for work when I suddenly received a notice that the tailgate was opening. when I pulled over the gate was open and all the contents were at the end of the truck bed, power saws and equipment almost flew out into traffic! I then called the dealer who told me there was a recall and to bring it in, so I did and when I pulled in the service department the tailgate opened upon entering service area. After about 20 minutes he tells me that mine is not covered. Warranty ran out! And not on that Vin#. The tailgate now opens and closes randomly at all different times.Try to close and it just keeps opening and closing.Have to go out and close manually.

The lights are bright enought that it was not immediately obvious to me (the driver) that anything was amiss. Was noticeable when close to other vehicles in traffic and on open, dark roads, where the strobing affect as apparent on reflective signs. The unit later failed completely and is now backordered and so unavailable to replace. I'm forced to drive with no headlight. The unit was faulty and suffered from water intrusion, which was determined to be the cause of the failure by the dealership. The failure occurred less than three years after the vehicle was placed into service, though it could not be taken in for service until a week after warranty expired. It is not covered by any warranty, though headlights are typically a wear item and expected to be readily replaceable. Dealer-quote cost to repair is $2,300, making the repair to be likely inaccessible to many owners. I have a video of the offensive behavior.

I BELIEVE I'M A VERY CAREFUL DRIVER TO AVOID ACCIDENTS, SO A COUPLE DAYS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, I CAME TO AN INTERSECTION AND STOPPED TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO CROSSING TRAFFIC BEFORE DRIVING THROUGH. AS I BEGAN TO GO THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, I NEARLY PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF A CROSSING VEHICLE, A VEHICLE THAT WAS NO WHERE IN VIEW WHEN I STARTED TO GO THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. I WAS THINKING TO MYSELF WHERE DID THAT VEHICLE COME FROM? A FEW DAYS LATER I NEARLY DID THE SAME THING AGAIN, AND I REALIZED I WASN'T DOING ANYTHING WRONG, THAT IT WAS THAT HUGE SIDE MIRROR CREATING SUCH A HUGE BLOND SPOT THAT WHEN THE CROSSING VEHICLE IS AT A CERTAIN POINT THE MIRROR TOTALLY BLOCKS THE VIEW OF THAT VEHICLE. I AM REALLY WORRIED ABOUT HAVING AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS LARGE MIRROR. I'M CONSIDERING GOING BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THE TRUCK CAN BE FITTED WITH A SMALLER MIRROR, BUT THERE IS PROBABLY A HUGE COST TO THE CUSTOMER.
