2012 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 106 complaints across the 6 model-year 2012 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2011–2014 · 6.6L Duramax LML diesel and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. Engines are the 6.6L Duramax LML diesel, the first Duramax with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), and the 6.0L V8 gas.
We counted 1,099 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2011–2014 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 407 from diesel trucks and 432 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is the most expensive known LML failure.
- DEF heaters and NOx sensors are commonly reported emissions repairs.
- Airbag recalls are a top complaint topic. Make sure they were done.
- Transmission complaints are common on both engines (about 1 in 8).
Duramax LML fuel pump (CP4.2)
Fuel pump problems come up in 49 diesel complaints, and owners describe sudden stalling and no-starts. Like Ford's 6.7L of the same era, the LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000 for a full fuel system replacement. There was no recall for these years.
When buying: ask whether the pump has been replaced or upgraded (some owners switch to a different pump design as prevention) and for fuel filter records. A scan for low fuel pressure codes is worth doing.
DEF and NOx sensors
DEF heater failures that put the truck into reduced power are commonly reported, and 2011 trucks are known for NOx sensor problems that trigger "Poor DEF quality" messages. Ask whether the emissions system has been removed ("deleted"), which can cause inspection and legal problems.
Airbag recalls
Airbags come up in about 1 in 4 complaints, often from owners waiting on recall parts. Passenger airbag inflator recalls cover 2011–2014 trucks (including 21V051000, 21V053000 and 21V054000). Check that they're completed.
Other things to check
- Steering wear: idler arms, pitman arms and tie rods are frequently replaced on these trucks. Check for play and clunks.
- Cracked dashboards are commonly reported (27 complaints).
- 3500s with dual fuel tanks were recalled for a fuel level sensor problem (recall 17V664000).
- Rust on rocker panels, cab corners, frame and brake lines.
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop, including a scan for fuel pressure and DEF codes.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Duramax LML fuel pump (CP4) failure
Best left to a shopSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.
Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
DEF heater and NOx sensor problems
Moderate DIYSigns: 'Poor DEF quality' or reduced power messages, check engine light.
Fix: Scan for codes. Common fixes are a NOx sensor or the DEF heater and tank assembly.
Worn idler arm and pitman arm
Moderate DIYSigns: Loose, wandering steering, clunks, play in the steering wheel.
Fix: Replace the idler arm and pitman arm, and check tie rods. Many owners add an idler arm support brace. Get an alignment afterward.
Cracked dashboard
Easy DIYSigns: Cracks across the dash top, especially near the passenger airbag.
Fix: Cover it with a molded dash cover or replace the dash pad. Make sure a cover doesn't block the airbag.

Day after driving to n a snow storm the vehicles stabilitrak and traction control light and message to service those came on the dash and a sudden lose of power. I pulled over and put it in park noticing the gear indicator on the dash was gone. I put in drive and could barely move. So I shifted to 1st gear then back to park and into drive and the light came off and it was back to normal. The next day I started the vehicle and the light was on again with the check engine light. And stuck in limp mode. There are forums I've read with thousands of people with the same problem. The vehicle is available for inspection. The safety concerns are the traction control and stabilitrak can affect the way it handles and brakes. The vehicle will be going to dealership. There where no warning light prior to. The lights and systems failed simultaneously. This vehicle only has 44000 miles on it, no rust the frame is mint. This is a very clean truck and shouldn't be having this kind of problem.

I AM ORIGINAL OWNER AND ONLY DRIVER. THIS TIRE HAS NEVER RUN OVER ANYTHING BUT ROADWAY SURFACE. I WAS TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THE SIDEWALL PLIES BROKE INTERNALLY CAUSING THE TIRE TO DE-BEAD. I PULLED OVER TO INSPECT. TIRE WAS SMOKING FROM THE INSIDE. IT WAS FULLY READY TO CATCH FIRE. COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF SMOKE. I POURED MY ICE TEA DOWN THE INSIDE PART OF RIM AND BACKED TRUCK UP TO SLOSH ICE TEA AROUND INSIDE OF SMOKING TIRE. THERE ARE NO CUTS, STONE BRUISES, OR OTHER OUTSIDE INFLUENCES. THIS TIRE BROKE ITS SIDEWALL. YOU CAN BOTH SEE AND FEEL IT. TREAD AND CROWN AT SAME AREA ARE FINE. TIRE HAS 6/32" TREAD REMAINING. WHEN TIRE WAS REPLACED, THERE WERE HANDFULS OF SHREDDED RUBBER FOUND INSIDE THE TIRE BY TIRE SHOP. I KEPT THE TIRE IF ANY REP WANTS TO INSPECT IT. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THIS TIRE FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED A FATALITY.. *TR

I FOUND THE SLIDE ON THE TRAILER WOULD NOT OPEN DUE TO A LACK OF POWER ON THE 5TH WHEEL. AT THIS TIME THE PIGTAIL WAS STILL CONNECTED TO THE TRUCK. I DISCONNECTED THE PIGTAIL FROM THE TRUCK AND PLUGGED THE TRAILER INTO A 50 AMP PLUG AND THE SLIDE OPENED NORMALLY. I THOUGHT IT WAS STRANGE THAT THE BATTERY HAD DISCHARGED AFTER SUCH A SHORT TIME. AROUND 10:45PM MY GIRLFRIEND SCREAMED THE TRAILER WAS ON FIRE AND WHEN I REACHED THE BACKDOOR THE ENTIRE TRAILER WAS ENGULFED AND THE REAR OF THE TRUCK WAS ALREADY ON FIRE. BOTH THE VEHICLES WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED ALONG WITH A BARN THAT WAS APPROXIMATELY10 FEET AWAY SUFFERING MAJOR DAMAGE.

HERE IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ISSUES INVOLVING THE 1012 CHEVROLET SILVERADO LT TEXAS EDITION AFTER THE PURCHASE DATE OF SEPTEMBER 3, 2012. FIRST, I NOTICED THAT IT HAS INCREASINGLY BECOME MORE DIFFICULT TO OPEN THE FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW FROM THE DRIVER SIDE MASTER CONTROL UNIT AROUND 2014. NOW, I HAVE TO PRESS HARD SEVERAL TIMES TO OPEN THE WINDOW. SECOND, THE OUTSIDE MOLDINGS OF THE DOOR PANELS ARE FALLING OFF STARTING IN MID-2014. THIRD, I HAVE STARTED TO HEAR POPPING NOISES COMING FROM THE BALL JOINTS WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT AT A VERY LOW SPEED STARTING THE BEGINNING OF 2014. THESE ISSUES WERE REPORTED TO THE CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THE GM HEADQUARTERS IN AUGUST 2015. ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2015, THE TRUCK WAS FINALLY DIAGNOSED BY THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT SOLD THE PICKUP. THE INVOICE DATED SEPTEMBER 4, 2015 INDICATES THE LOWER BALL JOINTS WORN WITH PLAY, DOOR MOLDINGS FALLING OFF, AND THE DRIVER'S MASTER SWITCH SHORTED.

WORKING IN THE YARD, I NOTICED OUT OF THE CORNER OF MY EYE THAT THERE APPEARED TO BE MOISTURE IN MY PASSENGER SIDE TAILLIGHT. AN INSPECTION OF THE TAILLIGHT SHOWED MULTIPLE FRACTURES IN THE HOUSING ACROSS THE REAR PORTION. THESE FRACTURES ALLOW WATER TO ENTER THE UNIT. A FRACTURE ROUGHLY A QUARTER INCH UP LIMITS THE WATER ACCUMULATION. I THEN CHECKED THE DRIVER'S SIDE UNIT & NOTICED THE SAME FAILURE IS STARTING. AT THE TIME OF DISCOVERY I HAD JUST OVER 1000 ENGINE HOURS ON THE VEHICLE AND JUST OVER 126K MILES. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW & I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE ROUGHLY 38.5 MONTHS. BULBS HAVE A GREATER LIFE EXPECTANCY THAN THE TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY DESIGNED TO PROTECT THEM AND PROMOTE SAFETY. THE DEALER SAYS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ASSEMBLIES ARE MY ISSUE. THESE ITEMS ARE REQUIRED BY STATE AND FEDERAL LAW TO MEET CERTAIN STANDARDS. DEPENDING ON FRACTURE PLACEMENT THE BULBS MAY SHORT OUT OR FAIL DUE TO CORROSION. FAILURE OF THE ASSEMBLY CAN LEAD TO SOMEONE MISSING A TURN SIGNAL, A STOP OR NOTICE THAT YOU ARE BACKING UP. I BELIEVE THESE FAILURES INCREASE THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING AN ACCIDENT. BASED PRIOR EXPERIENCES WITH OTHER VEHICLES I BELIEVE THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. I'M THEORIZING THAT BECAUSE THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE CATCHES THE EVENING SUN IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THESE WERE DESIGNED USING CHEAPER MATERIALS THAT POTENTIALLY DID NOT PROVIDE FOR THE ABILITY TO HOLDUP TO THE UV RAYS OF NATURAL SUNLIGHT. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND THIRD LIGHT ON THE CAB RECEIVED MORE SHADE DUE TO A NEIGHBOR'S TREE THAT WAS REMOVED LAST YEAR SO THE SUN IMPACT WOULD BE LESS. I NOTICE THERE IS ANOTHER COMPLAINT FOR THIS MODEL YEAR ABOUT A CAB PLACED REAR LIGHT ASSEMBLY ECHOING THE SAME ISSUE.

I HAVE HAD A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH MY NEW 2012 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 LT (5.3 LITER ENGINE) GOING INTO "REDUCED ENGINE POWER MODE" WHICH ALSO RESULTS IN THE DISABLING OF STABILITY CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION IN THAT IT RESULTS IN A LOSS OF POWER WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE UPON THE ROADWAY. AN AUTHORIZED REPAIR FACILITY HAS REPLACED THE NUMBER ONE AND TWO THROTTLE SENSORS, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY, THE THROTTLE BODY, THE ALTERNATOR, THE COMPUTER, AND A LARGE GROUND WIRE BEHIND THE DASH. A GM ENGINEER WAS FLOWN IN AND NOW THE REPAIR CENTER IS REPLACING THE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS. THE VEHICLE (WHICH WAS PURCHASED LESS THAN THREE MONTHS AGO) HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 DAYS. IN RESEARCHING THIS MATTER I HAVE FOUND THAT CHEVY HAS HAD AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS IN VARIOUS VEHICLES IN ITS PRODUCT LINE SINCE 2003. ALTHOUGH SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A CONSENSUS REGARDING THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. ALL OF THE PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH TROUBLE CODES C0242, P2127, AND P2138 HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITHOUT RESULT. THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES BEING REARENDED, OR, BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OF STABILITY AND TRACTION CONTROL, RESULT IN A ROLL OVER. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. *JS

AT THE RATE OF SPEED I WAS GOING BEFORE THE ACCIDENT AND THE FACT THAT I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS TO BEGIN SLOWING DOWN ONE WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THE SEAT BELT WOULD HAVE LOCKED BUT IT DID NOT AND AT THE POINT OF IMPACT I WAS VERY SURPRISED THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY BUT YET THE SYSTEM INDICATED THAT IT DID AND NEEDED TO BE RESET.
