Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.

We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
  • Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
  • Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
  • 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.

  • GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
  • Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.

When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.

Brakes and trailer brakes

Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.

Recalls to check

  • Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
  • Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
  • Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
  • Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
  • Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)

  • Tires:Pressure Monitoring And Regulating Systems

    Aug 2026 · #26V530000

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024-2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and GMC Sierra 2500 vehicles equipped with the enhanced towing option and 20-inch accessory tire/wheel package. The tire information label may state the incorrect rear tire pressure, resulting in underinflated tires and preventing the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) from displaying a low tire pressure warning.

    Risk and fix

Risk: Driving with underinflated tires can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect, update the engine control module (ECM) software, apply a tire label overlay, inflate tires to the correct pressure, and perform a tire pressure monitor system (TPMS) re-learn process as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 17, 2026. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N262561970. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on August 13, 2026.

      - Multiple system failure. Truck presented with oil or ATF leaking from the transmission bell housing and transmission inspection port cover. First detected by me at 30k mile oil change. Prior to this, my wife and I both complained that the truck was very slow to get into gear from a stop, especially while towing. Engine would rev and then finally dump power, spinning the rear tires. Additionally encountered hunting for gears on the highway. - Second failure. 24 AUG. Truck illuminated with Check engine light, Traction control light, forward collision light, service ECS, service trailer brake control, and ABS light. - Inconsistent power application and loss of safety features makes the truck unpredictable and unsafe to drive. - Truck is at the second dealer (first diagnosed issues as an oil drain plug). Has been at dealers for 32 days now. Problem is confirmed. - The suspected transmission issues have been noticed intermittently and getting progressively worse for about 6 months. Warning lights all appeared on the morning of 24 AUG. Truck was taken directly to the shop that morning.

While launching a boat. Truck was in park and boat off the trailer. I was out of truck 30' on the dock reaching for boat rope ( was a single person boat launch). I heard a loud pop and the truck went into the lake till it hit the dock. Several witnesses to this story. Glad I didn't have to go behind the truck to undo my boat winch. I would have been killed.

Safety Issue. The raised cruise control speed set button on the steering wheel is prone to being touched when rotating the steering wheel while making sharp turns when driving through parking lots at low speed. If the distance cruise was previously set at say 45 mph the last time it was used, and the set button is very briefly hit upward when rotating the wheel through your hands to the left, it can inadvertently cause the truck to start accelerating to that previously-set speed. The cruise button needs to be programmed such that at certain steering angles it will not respond to inputs. This is very dangerous. I ave had this happen to me at least 5 times. Hitting the brakes stopped the acceleration. I reported it to the dealer as a potential engine surge but they could not reproduce it. I just recently realized what was happening. I believe this can easily be addressed by a steering angle lockout of the button. Other issues: Drivetrain vibrates occasionally and shifts very hard (drivetrain literally slams through gear change) when leaving driving from a stop a slow speeds. Dealer cannot replicate. This diesel truck gets very poor mileage possibly from spending too much time in regeneration mode. Truck is super sensitive to fuel. Mileage varies drastically from fill up to fill up depending upon station. I believe the fuel cetane content affects regeneration in unexpected ways. I buy fuel at name brand stations but mileage varies drastically from vendor to vendor. Mileage average goes down to about 11 mpg much of the time due to time in regeneration. Dealer has no comments. I know HD trucks don't have official mileage ratings but this is just crazy. I drive light on the accelerator. Rarely achieved up to 21 mpg but average mileage runs about 11-12. I believe this to be a fault with these trucks as I have read complaints from many others. The infotainment system frequently loses all audio, including turn signal sound, nav. GM has no fix. Possibly software.

Supposedly The oil cooler ended up failing causing oil to be pumped into the cooling system at 26000 miles 8 months after purchase. A low oil message popped up upon start up looked under the hood a noticed no oil on the dip stick and a coolant reservoir full of jet black oil (supposed to be a bright red) and a fluid level higher than the normally observed coolant level. Thankfully happened in my drive way. It could have left me stranded had the engine completely run out of oil/overheated etc. Had the coolant reservoir broke/cracked due to the extra pressure and added volume in the coolant system it would have leaked a coolant/oil mixture in the engine bay around hot components of the motor. (potential fire hazard in my opinion) thankfully was able to get it towed to the dealer before any major leaks of the coolant system or catastrophic damage (that I know of) occurred.

Radio does not emit sound also canceling all warning noises for fuel level, turn signals, seat belts, open door in motion. This problem is not only a saftey hazard for drivers its a major annoyance. Honestly find it quite distracting. Have reached out to gm multiple times and the issue hasn't been corrected. Really concerned this is going to plage my vehicle its whole life. This issue has happened more times than I can count.

The infotainment system has not worked since day one and the entire dash and everything electrical sometimes malfunctions or doesn't work. The vehicle has been in the shop non stop for 8 months and it has not been fixed and they have said they can't fix it. According to GM they are waiting on another part to replace but the part is on back order with no timetable to get it and the mechanic has said that part won't fix it.

I was driving the truck on my way to work in [XXX] , last March 12, 2026, at around 6:50 am. It was raining when I entered the exit ramp to work going west; the truck died, and the steering wheel locked. I tried to start it, but it wouldn't. The dashboard displayed: 'Trailer Park Brake Failed,' 'Power Steering Pump Needs Service,' and 'Axle Repair Error.' I was on the exit ramp for a highway that runs north and south, and I could have been t-boned; it was still dark. The truck was towed to Curry Chevrolet in Scarsdale. They said it was the ECM and ordered the part. They installed the new ECM module last Tuesday, March 17. The service manager called me and said they tested the truck, but it is still showing active codes. A GM advisor called me saying the truck should be ready for pickup this Friday. However, this afternoon, I got a call from the service manager saying there is another issue—the engine wiring harness—and they will order the part; now it will not be ready until next week. GM owes me my life. I do not want to drive the vehicle. The service department people at Curry Chevrolet are very professional, but did I pay and spend a lot of money for a garbage truck? During cold weather, temperatures below freezing, both sideview mirrors open fully extended contacting the fenders, sometimes open partially, sometimes open 3/4 of the way. Cycling the mirrors closed then open condition repeats. Each mirror responds independently from the other. This resulted in dents on each fender from the mirrors when they open fully. The doors cannot be opened without further damaging the fenders and or the mirrors. Once the temperature rises above freezing, the mirrors return to normal function. The truck is available for inspection upon request. Safety concern and risk exists without function and use of sideview mirrors. Cannot see down both sides of vehicle behind when operating. The safety and risk increases exponentially when towing. The problem was not duplicated at the dealership due to the vehicle was inside the shop unexposed to the below freezing temperatures. It has been reported to the dealership and inspected by the body shop manager who also acknowledged the problem and cause. Mirrors and vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or insurance representative. There were no warning lamps to indicate an issue. The indication was the function of the mirrors and the positions they would stop at when vehicle is unlocked.

I purchased my 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD new from Wilsonville Chevrolet in Oregon. Since owning the vehicle, I have experienced a noticeable shutter/vibration at highway speeds, consistently between 70–75 mph, whether towing or not. The shutter feels like it is coming from the transmission or driveline, and it occurs on multiple road types and conditions. I reported this issue to Wilsonville Chevrolet, but they told me they “could not duplicate” the problem and offered no repair. I then took the truck to Power Chevrolet in Corvallis, who stated the tires were out of balance and replaced them. This did not resolve the issue, and the shutter at highway speed remains exactly the same. I also contacted GM directly, but was redirected back to the dealership, resulting in no progress. At this point the issue has been reported multiple times, yet no root cause or repair has been provided. I am essentially being sent in circles without a solution. There appears to be a growing history of transmission-related issues with newer Chevrolet HD trucks equipped with the Allison 10-speed transmission, and this symptom seems consistent with those reports. A shutter at sustained highway speeds raises a significant safety concern, as a transmission failure at 70+ mph could lead to loss of control or power. In addition to the shutter, I have repeatedly noticed a strong “burning brake pad” smell coming from the rear of the truck. This happens randomly and has also been reported to the dealership, but no cause has been identified. I am unsure whether this is related to the transmission issue, but combined, these symptoms suggest a potential mechanical defect. Given the safety implications and the lack of resolution from authorized dealerships, I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in investigating this issue.

The contact owns a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated while her husband was hauling a trailer and driving 55 MPH in the snow, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. In addition, the contact stated the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal before slamming into gear. The RPM fluctuated up to 6,500 RPM. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle was turned off but failed to restart. The contact's husband stepped out of the vehicle, and the vehicle restarted automatically. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the wiring was for a diesel vehicle; however, the contact's vehicle was gasoline operated. The contact was informed that the wiring harness control arm had rubbed against the control arm, causing the electrical system to short-circuit. The vehicle was repaired. The failure had progressively gotten worse. Most recently, the contact stated that the vehicle vibrated abnormally while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The contact stated that a seal was placed on the transmission. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but denied assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.

My 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT (new vehicle, low mileage) has a persistent water intrusion/leak into the cab interior. Water appears at the top of the headliner/ceiling, specifically around the overhead console where the HomeLink garage door opener buttons and map lights are located. This occurs after rain events, heavy precipitation, and results in visible wetness, dripping, and staining on the headliner fabric in the front overhead area. The leak is repeatable under wet conditions. It strongly suggests entry through the roof-mounted shark fin antenna (OnStar/XM/GPS antenna) seal or possibly the windshield-to-roof junction, as water migrates forward along the headliner to the overhead console area. This is a known issue pattern in prior GM trucks (e.g., 2014–2019 models with TSBs for shark fin antenna leaks causing headliner/overhead console drips), though not yet documented as widespread on the 2025 HD models. I took the vehicle to an authorized Chevrolet dealer for diagnosis and repair under warranty. The dealer performed an inspection but stated they could not replicate the leak during their test and therefore declined to perform any repairs, noting “unable to duplicate” on the repair order. Despite the waterline in the headliner and explaining the conditions (e.g., after heavy rain), no further action was taken. The issue continues to recur.

Of If I turn on the truck the air conditioner doesn’t work. It takes around 30 mins to turn on . It’s summer time and I shouldn’t be going through this. It’s hot outside. I’m sweating my butt off.

Following vehicle startup, the entire audio system defaults to a muted state, affecting all sound output channels. This includes, but is not limited to: Critical Safety Alerts: Seat belt warnings, system malfunction indicators, and door ajar chimes. Proximity and Collision Warnings: Parking assist chimes, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) warnings, and Backup Collision Intervention (BCI) alerts. Communication Systems: Navigation prompts and hands-free/Bluetooth call audio. The audio failure persists until manual user intervention or the next vehicle cycle, disabling critical warning redundancy. Safety Implications The system-wide audio failure directly compromises the safety of vehicle occupants and surrounding pedestrians in two primary ways: Risk to Pedestrians: The silencing of proximity and backup collision warnings (RCTA, BCI) removes a vital layer of redundancy, significantly increasing the risk of striking vulnerable road users, such as children, while maneuvering in reverse. Impaired Driver Safety & Compliance: The defect also removes essential alerts like seat belt warnings and renders the mandated hands-free communication system inoperable, forcing potential driver distraction or non-compliance with driving regulations. Conclusion This audio muting defect is a critical safety failure that disables mandated auditory warning systems, severely limiting the driver's ability to operate the vehicle safely and respond to immediate, unseen hazards. Immediate investigation and resolution are necessary.
