Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.

We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
  • Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
  • Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
  • 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.

  • GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
  • Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.

When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.

Brakes and trailer brakes

Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.

Recalls to check

  • Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
  • Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
  • Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
  • Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
  • Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)

    Feb 2024 · #24V060000

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The tailgate's electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in park.

    Risk and fix

Risk: An unlatched tailgate may open while driving and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 17, 2024. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. Vehicle has about 58k miles It has been at the dealer for 3 weeks and they say they have no idea when they can get it fixed. It is my only work vehicle and now I have to rent another vehicle to keep working.

Driving on highway at 40mph while towing a trailer the rear tires briefly locked up, then the Check Engine Light came on and vehicle went into limp mode. Dealer confirmed transmission valve body issue. Same problem as recalled on earlier model year vehicles. Seems like 2023-2025 vehicles should be added to the original recall to ensure support and long-term warranty protection.

The 2023 Chevy High Country Diesel vehicle for 89,000 has failed tremendously, without any warning whatsoever. I've had my vehicle serviced on a 6 to 8 weeks bases at the dealership. on March 28, 2025 I was driving in SD and the truck just failed all the suddenly. The information stated to shift to neutral and restart which I did. The truck never started and had to be towed. The first diagnosis was the high pressure fuel pump which contaminated the entire fuel systems with metal shavings. Thereby, the CP4 failed and damage all components of the fuel system costing 11,750.00 for the repair. In addition to this, during further inspecting the shop informed me the engine camshaft and lifter were also an issued and contributed to the dilemma. I then got General Motors involved informing them that now way possible this should have transpired with a new truck having only 126,000 miles. I stated this is nothing for a diesel engine and something was not adding up. At the time I wasn't aware of all the issue General Motors were having with the trucks and suvs. I told them that no way can I pay 31,000.00 for a repairs on a new practically new truck I purchased brand new. They need to honor these problematic vehicles.

We bought a Chevrolet Silverado from 2023 as a new car in October 2024. It is an imported vehicle, as we live in Germany. After 7146km we broke down on the highway on [XXX] with engine damage. There were no signs or warnings beforehand. The Chevrolet simply stalled while driving and indicated that the start/stop button should be pressed. However, this had no effect. The whole vehicle came to a standstill. Not even the wheels were still rolling. A call to the seller (GeigerCars in Munich/Germany) immediately revealed that it was probably engine damage, as the problem is known. The vehicle was then towed to the seller's workshop and has now been there for over 5 weeks without spare parts, as according to the seller these are not supplied by GM. We have not yet received a rental car or anything similar and have to rent a car every week at our own expense. We have not received any help so far. A lawyer has already been called in. I have been experiencing the "SHIFT TO PARK" issue that GM Vehicles have been experiencing. My 2320 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD High Country is not on the Recall for this issue, and I have approached my local dealer about it. I have not been able to fully addressed that issue yet, because I am dealing with a failed Transmission Valve Body that is covered under my drivetrain warranty, but not the GM recall for the 10L100 Allison Transmissions (GM N242454441). I undoubly have faulty parts/components contributing to this issue the fails to completely allow my truck to shift to park and allow me to completely turn the truck off and leave the vehicle.
