Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
What owners should know
Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.
We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
- Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
- Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
- 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.
10-speed transmission
Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.
- GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
- Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.
When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.
Brakes and trailer brakes
Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.
Recalls to check
- Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
- Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
- Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
- Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
- Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN. Many of these trucks have several.
- Ask a Chevy or GMC dealer for the service history and remaining factory warranty.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Feb 2024 · #24V060000General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. Fix: Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 17, 2024. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. August of 2025 [XXX] purchased a certified GMC Sierra 3500. The truck had been traded in May and sat in their service department waiting on a valve body. At this point, we knew this. [XXX] had done research on it, and felt confident in being told the valve body was completely replaced and now working…. Worst mistake we’ve made in a long time. It was not replaced, that was only the beginning of the lies. [XXX] then drove the truck across the country for work, not knowing how much of a hazzard it was. Shortly after arriving there he quickly realized the truck was still having transmission problems. We brushed it off, these things happen. Fast forward when he came home in September/October he took the truck to the Rice Buick GMC service department. Where he was supposed to “wait” on his appointment. Only to call me hours later, they clearly weren’t going to be done that day. We left not knowing that it would be nearly a month until we could drive the truck again. In the midst of that they never offered any help, a rental or anything. When I asked, they offered a tiny small car next door at enterprise. I clearly did not agree, we just spent a lot of money on a heavy duty truck for a reason. It took multiple phone calls to multiple supervisors for them to agree to let him rent a truck. Because you know they might have to spend an extra penny or something (que the eye roll). In that month of having the truck the communication was little to non existent. They never answered the phone, called back, heck most of the time the text messages weren’t even replied to. It once again took me getting a little bit ridiculous for an answer - the truck was “fixed”. When I picked up the truck I spoke to the the service manager, and he of course tried to play me like I was some dumb women who had no idea what I was talking about. He dismissed all of my concerns, acted like having a truck for a month was normal. (More attached in photos) INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra HD3500 6.6 Duramax. February of 2025 the valve body failed after 23,000 miles. The failure happened when the transmission had an extremely hard shift at 55 mph and then went into 5 gear limp mode. Computer through code P0700 and P0747. The P0747 is the code that tells you the valve body failed. When I took the truck to the dealer, they would not let me take the truck home because of the high risk of the transmission locking up and causing bodily injury, aka crash. Since the valve body was back ordered, I was warmed that it may be a month to get a replacement and install it. I finally got the truck back after 33 days. To add to the frustration, GM would not give me a loaner truck. They would give me a loaner SUV but that did not have what I needed out of a vehicle.

There are 2 issues with this vehicle: #1) The rear window defrost causes an electrical issue that melted the plastic on our rear sliding window. Dealer claims we put something hot against the window but we did not. This appeared after we used the rear defrost. Several other owners have complained about this as well. #2) The vehicle is advertised as having adaptive cruise but it does not have this feature.

We’ve had issues with the electrical system/brake lights when we hook any trailer (horse/boat/utility) to the truck. One issue is that the system shows unconnected and the trailer lights blink or do not work. We’ve brought this in to the dealer 3 times and they have yet to resolve the issue. The other issue of melted plastic on our rear sliding mirror. It just appeared one day, possible after using the rear defog button. We took it to the dealer and they also do not know what is the issue. We found several other blogs where owners have had the same issue. This is a newer vehicle, and we live in Southern California where the temperature is mild. It just appeared one day. We are concerned This is a safety issue with the electrical system melting the plastic and possibly causing a fire. On March 22, 2023, my wife and I purchased a new 2023 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali from Coast Buick GMC. Before purchasing, we asked the salesman if it had adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, and he said yes and showed us the buttons and explained how they worked. We purchased the truck because it had these features. Four days later, on a trip out of town, we found that the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist did not work. We looked online and saw similar GM vehicles with the same buttons, showing how to use the systems, but ours didn’t work. During our trip, the salesman texted me and said he needed me to sign a document. I told him that we couldn’t figure out the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, and Sal responded in writing via text, “OK be my pleasure to show you the adaptive cruise and lane keep assist.” We came into the dealership the next day, on March 28, 2023, with only 251 miles on the truck, and were told it didn’t have these features. The Dealership and GM have refused to make this right. GM’s design of the buttons in the truck for the warning systems closely, if not exactly, match the buttons for adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist options in other GM vehicles, which is very misleading. My brother-in-law has a 2020 model and he still thinks his has adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, but they just don’t work very well, even after I told him it doesn’t. Today, while dropping off my truck at the GM Service Department for repair, the Service Department Representative said a lot of customers were told their GMC HD truck had lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. This is a fraudulent or misleading design, which could result in serious injury or death.

The brake controller on trucks error out while towing. Shuts brakes off. Not a good thing towing 16,000lbs down hill. Almost accident. Destroyed my truck brakes and warped rotors. The controller checks the house battery on trailer and if not in range shuts brakes off. The brake towing screen in truck states all is good but there is this tiny little light at gain adjust location that goes off and you do not have brakes but yet your screen states you do. Bad deal.

My truck has the shift to park issue and won’t allow me to shut the vehicle ignition off and I cannot shut the vehicle ignition off and it is unsafe and keeps me trapped in my vehicle. I have noticed that it is a common issue and recall on many gmc trucks and I took it to the dealership and they are not wanting to cover it with my two warranties I have on the truck and my vehicle is unsafe. I cannot park the vehicle and shut it off. When I go to put the truck in park on shift column lever, it says shift to park on dash and I turn it on and move shifter to drive and neutral and the vehicle still won’t allow me to shut it off and it shows the same issue.. the issue just began out of no where.

The vehicle experienced a catastrophic fuel system failure involving the high-pressure fuel pump and related fuel system components. While driving, the engine began stalling and lost power, making the vehicle unsafe to operate. The failed components were replaced during repairs; however, the repair records, photographs, and additional documentation are available for inspection upon request. The failure created a significant safety risk because the vehicle stalled unexpectedly while being driven, resulting in a sudden loss of power. This placed the occupants and surrounding motorists at risk by reducing the driver's ability to safely control the vehicle or move it out of traffic. The problem was confirmed by an independent repair facility, which documented extensive metallic contamination (metal shavings) throughout the fuel system. Photographs and videos taken during the inspections document metallic contamination within the fuel system. From our understanding, cp4 pump failure has been a common issue.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the failure occurred due to the TPMS sensor location and range. The dealer informed the contact that the TMPS sensor was losing the WI-FI connection because it was located behind the license plate, and the TMPS sensor was designed with a 23-ft. range. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.

It's leaking brake fluid onto the driver brake assembly and some sort of cable. While this is repairable under warranty, this should NEVER ever happen on a vehicle. I am feeling like I’m being taken advantage of and need help I’ve lost my job since this has happened and struggling to pay for the truck it’s self but I am maintaining and when they are hoping I get it repossessed so they can get away with not having to deal with my case I’ve gotten under delivered promised and they haven’t helped me at all for something. They are avoiding to admit is an issue when the truck was manufactured and put into sale 10/2022 as for the recalled vehicles from 2019 and 2022 and I continue to tell them this truck was manufactured 2022 they are trying to get away with technical wording when this truck has an safety issue for sure as a consumer and hard working American I need help

- Air Bags11 involved a crash

I was in an accident and was hit in the right front side of my truck. The other vehicle was believed to be going around 50 mph and I had just rolled thru a stop sign. The other vehicle that hit me had the air bags deploy, but my airbags did not deploy. This is very concerning considering there was enough force to significantly bend the frame on my truck. I was transported to the ER and suffered internal organ bruising due to the accident. If the airbags would have deployed, my body could.have not jolted so much causing these injuries.
