2015 GMC Sierra 3500HD

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 178 complaints across the 8 model-year 2015 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

  • Air Bags:Side/Window:Curtain:Inflator

    Jul 2021 · #21V504000

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

    Risk and fix

Risk: A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. • Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Pedals And Linkages

    Aug 2018 · #18V578000

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, 1500 Crew Cab Special Service, Tahoe Police Pursuit/Special Service, GMC Sierra 2500, and 3500 vehicles. The brake pedal pivot nut may loosen, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will add adhesive to the nut and reinstall the nut with increased tightness, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18278. Note: The vehicles in this recall need this additional remedy despite being covered by recall 16V069 for brake pedal loosening.

  • Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Auxillary Tank

    Oct 2017 · #17V664000

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 trucks equipped with dual fuel tanks. The low fuel level sensor for the front tank may stick causing the rear tank to overfill the front tank.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. The hole will leak fuel, which in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear tank fuel pump or update the fuel-level sensor software, as well as inspect the front tank, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2017. Owners may contact GM customer service for Chevrolet 1-800-222-1020 or for GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17399.

  • Air Bags:Frontal

    Jul 2017 · #17V437000

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

    Risk and fix

Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. I WAS TRAVELING ON A BUSY ROADWAY AT 40 MPH WHEN FUEL FILTER WARNING LIGHT CAME ON SUDDENLY AND VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER - INCLUDING THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKING. THANKFULLY I HAD NOT YET ENTERED THE HIGHWAY AND WAS ABLE TO SLOW VEHICLE DOWN BUT WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY AND NOT INJURE ANYONE AROUND AND THAT DAY WAS NOT TOWING A LOAD. VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. I HAD IT TOWED TO NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHO THEN INFORMED ME THAT THE "BOSCH CP4 FUEL PUMP" HAD EXPLODED SENDING METAL SHRAPNEL THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE ENGINES FUEL SYSTEM. THE ONLY FIX WAS THE ENTIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL SYSTEM AT A COST OF OVER $11K. I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE TRUCK 3 MONTHS PRIOR. UPON HEARING THIS, I SEE THIS HAS BEEN A FREQUENT SAFETY PROBLEM AFFECTING A WHOLE LINE OF 2011 - CURRENT GM, FORD, DODGE, AND JEEP DIESEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE CP4 PUMPS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS LAWSUITS UNDERWAY FOR THIS FAILURE INCLUDING ONE OF A MAJOR ACCIDENT WHILE TOWING (WHAT THESE TRUCKS ARE MADE FOR) BECAUSE OF LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKING UPON ENGINE STALL AFTER FUEL PUMP EXPLOSION. THE GM TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR REFERENCE IS #16-NA-102. IN ADDITION, THE NHTSA HAS RECEIVED TWO MANUFACTURER TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON THIS VERY SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS VERY MUCH A RECALL WORTHY SAFETY ISSUE. LOSING ENGINE POWER AND LOSS TO ALL POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKING IN THESE VEHICLES IS BEYOND DANGEROUS. IN ADDITION, WHEN IT IS HAPPENING TO VEHICLES DESIGNED TO TOW WEIGHTS IN EXCESS OF 30K POUNDS TRAILER LOAD BEHIND THE AFFECTED VEHICLE THE DANGER IS AMPLIFIED THAT MUCH GREATER. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL IMMEDIATELY. PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE VERY MUCH AT STAKE FOR GM'S FAILURE TO REMEDY A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE. GM LISTS IT AS ONLY A "HARD START OR NO START". THEY DO NOT RECOGNIZE IN WRITING THE DANGER OF FULL POWER LOSS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHICH IS MOST OFTEN HOW IT PRESENTS ITSELF.

I have noticed decreased braking of the trailer as well. Have not gone to dealer yet.

A WEEK LATER AFTER BUYING A NEW 2015 GMC SIERRA DELANI FROM ED MORSE GMC 'SAWGRASS I TOOK IT TO A TRUCK ACCESSORY COMPANY TO ORDER A NEW BED (TONNEAU) COVER. THEY TOOK THE ORDER AND TOOK A PICTURE OF THE SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION LABEL, LOCATED IN THE TRUCK GLOVE BOX FOR THE PURPOSE OF ORDERING THE PART AND COLOR. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE TRUCK THAT IDENTIFIES THE PARTS AND COLOR FOR THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. I AM ENCLOSING A PICTURE FOR YOUR REVIEW. TEN DAYS LATER THE COVER ARRIVED AND WHEN I WENT TO THE COMPANY TO HAVE IT INSTALLED, THEY REMOVED THE WRAPPING TO SHOW ME THE COVER AND WE FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS NOT THE RIGHT COLOR. THE COVER WAS WHITE INSTEAD OF BLACK. THE COMPANY MANAGER CHECKED THE ORDER TWICE TO VERIFY THAT THEY HAD ORDERED IT CORRECTLY AND THAT HAD THE CORRECT DECAL INFORMATION. THIS IS WHEN WE FOUND OUT THE CODE INFORMATION IN THE SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION LABEL IN MY TRUCK WAS INCORRECT, THE CODE FOR THE PAINT SAID WHITE NOT ONYX BLACK AS THE COLOR OF MY VEHICLE. THEY SAID WE CAN RE-ORDER THE TOP IN THE RIGHT COLOR, BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REFUND YOUR DEPOSIT BECAUSE IT WAS NOT THEIR FAULT BUT GMC. WE CONTACTED GMC ON 2/11 TALKED TO SHELLY AND SHE SAID THEY COULD NOT HELP US; THEY WOULD NOT EVEN PUT A MANAGER ON THE PHONE. THEN WE CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO HAD SOLD US THE TRUCK, ED MORSE GMC-SAWGRASS, FL. THE DEALER TOLD US THAT HAD CONTACTED GMC BUT THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE WRONG SERVICE PART DECAL WE WANT GMC TO FIX THIS PROBLEM REPLACING THE DECAL BECAUSE THE INFORMATION IN THIS DECAL IS VITAL TO ORDER CORRECT PARTS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND WE KNOW THAT SOONER OR LATER WE ARE GOING TO NEED THE CORRECT INFORMATION. IF THEY CAN'T FIX THIS PROBLEM THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE TRUCK.

I SEE THERE WAS A RECALL FROM GM #17399 FOR THE 2015 DUAL FUEL TANK SENDING UNIT PROBLEM. THIS IS ONLY FOR THE 6.0 L GAS ENGINE. I HAVE THE DURAMAX 6.6L ENGINE IN MINE. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MINE. THE SENDING UNIT DID NOT TURN OFF THE TRANSFER PUMP AND OVERFILLED THE FRONT TANK CAUSING FUEL TO POUR OUT ALL OVER THE ROAD. I CAUGHT IT BEFORE THE DRIVE LINE CAUSED ANY DAMAGE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WHILE WE MOVED IT TO PULL IT UP ON THE TOW TRUCK IT WAS PUSHING FUEL OUT OF THE FILLER NECK OF THE FRONT TANK. THE DEALER SHIP REFUSED TO COVER THE COST SAYING ITS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THEY SAID IT WASN'T THE SAME PROBLEM. IT SURE WAS. I HAVE ATTACHED THE REPAIR ORDER AND THE RECALL NOTIFICATION BELOW. I AM WONDERING IF IT IS PART OF THE RECALL AND THEY ARE JUST NOT DOING THEIR JOB AND HONERING IT.

THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL ISSUE FROM THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. THE TRAILER BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED AND WAS REPLACED ON OCTOBER 2014. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD MANY RECALLS THAT HAVE BEEN CORRECTED BY OWNER AND SERVICE PROVIDER. THE SECOND SUMMER OF OWNERSHIP THE VEHICLE HAD RADIATOR ISSUES, AND MOST RECENTLY ELECTRICAL ISSUES AGAIN AND TRANSMISSION ISSUES. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL DASHBOARD GOES INTO A FLICKER AND SHUTS DOWN. GMC WAS ABLE TO FIX THIS ISSUE AT THE OWNERS COST WITH THE VEHICLE BEING OUT OF SERVICE FOR 3 WEEKS. GMC WAS TO REIMBURSE THE OWNER FOR COSTS OF A GM DEALER THAT WAS NOT ABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE (PAINTER AUTOMOTIVE)(FEBRUARY 9, 2017) OF $300, THIS HAS NOT BEEN REIMBURSED. THE VEHICLE IS NOW AT THE SERVICE STATION AS IT DOES NOT START WITH NO CODES. IT HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE FOR 2 WEEKS AND COUNTING, THIS VEHICLE IS NO LONGER RELIABLE OR SAFE FOR US TO DRIVE. WE HAVE DOCUMENTATION OF ALL THE ISSUES AND VIDEO OF THE DASHBOARD FLICKER.
