2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 178 complaints across the 8 model-year 2015 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.
We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
- 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
- Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
- Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
- Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).
2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump
Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.
When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.
2017–2019 Duramax L5P
Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.
Brakes and trailer brakes
- GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
- Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.
Gas trucks
The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.
Other recalls
- Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
- Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
- Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop for a Duramax.

2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure
Best left to a shopSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.
Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)
Dealer (recall)Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.
Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.
May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)
Dealer (recall)Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.
Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.
May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
'Service trailer brake system' warning
Easy DIYSigns: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.
Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.
L5P cracked intercooler pipe
Easy DIYSigns: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.
Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

THE HEADLIGHTS ARE COMPLETELY INADEQUATE. IF YOU ARE TAKING A TURN AT NIGHT, THE LIGHTS CONTINUE TO STAY STRAIGHT WITH THE DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING THE VEHICLE SO THAT YOU END UP TAKING A TURN BLINDLY AND CANNOT SEE THE CURB OR EDGE OF THE ROAD. IT IS A TOTALLY UNSAFE SITUATION. WE HAVE FOUND THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BIT MORE VISIBILITY IF YOU RUN WITH THE FOG LIGHTS ON, BUT VERY LITTLE IMPROVEMENT. PLEASE FIND A SOLUTION, ADDITIONAL HEADLIGHT, AS THIS TRUCK IS VERY SCARY TO DRIVE AT NIGHT.

I AM UNABLE TO SEE MORE THAT 15 FEET IN FRONT OF THIS VEHICLE FROM A SAFETY PERSPECTIVE. I HAVE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES FOR REPAIR. THEY CHANGED THE BULBS BUT STATED THEY ARE WORKING WITHIN DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS AND SAID THAT GM HAD USED A NEW TYPE OF LIGHTING SYSTEM IN 2015 BUT REALIZED IT IS WAS NOT ADEQUATE AND REDESIGNED IN LATER MODEL YEAR. IF GM REALIZES THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WHY WILL THEY NOT REPAIR VEHICLES THAT THEY SOLD PRIOR TO REALIZING THEIR MISTAKE? IN THE RAIN AT NIGHT THERE IS VIRTUALLY ZERO VISIBILITY. GM NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AS IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE.

The truck is a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD. With less than 51,000 miles, the transmission is gone due to a design flaw. Around march 8th, the transmission went out when I hydroplanned on a two lane road. Haley GMC Airport was wanting $6700 for a new transmission. I contacted GMC and they offered a 15% discount after raising the price to over $7500. GMC has replaced and volunteered recall on their 2015 1500 and 2015 2500 8 speed transmissions but will not do anything about the 2015 2500 6 speed transmission. The transmission where I received a second opinion advised that they changed the transmission on the 2015 after realizing there was a design flaw. I feel that myself and many others whose transmissions died before 100,000 due to GMC design should not pay full price for a new transmission. If this is not the correct channel, please let me know. thank you.

Shifting started to make a loud clunking sound. Then the vehicle wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. The engine check light came on and the code determined it to be a faulty transmission control module (TCM). When looking at the TCM, I also noted that the TCM was very hot and the nearby cable cover had melted. When researching the issue, it was discovered that GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, years 2009 - 2015 were having this same issue all over the continent. Resulting in a massive back order and leaving drivers stranded. There was no warning lights or sounds before my power train froze up.

I am having a issue with a low milage GMC Sierra. The truck is a 2015 with 24,000 miles. When it was produced the truck had a 100,000 mile warranty but has since lasped in time. The transmission on this truck is a 6l90 which has had several know issues that gm is aware of. This service bulletin is just highlight of the issue gm bulletin 19-na-153. I've talked with several transmission shops and event saw a few posted online about the transmission issue, my issue is gm will not stand behind their product, I have contacted GM directly and gotten no where. During my conversation with the GM reps on the phone they did agree the transmission should not have blown at the milage. My truck is garage kept, doesn't go outside in the rain or snow. I know there is a class action for the Allison transmission and the 8 speed but not the 6 speed that I'm aware of.

On November 14th, while commuting home from work, my transmission failed while I was stopped at a red light. After the light turned green, my car would not move when I pushed my foot on the gas. The engine would rev up but nothing would happen. I turned off the engine and re-started several times but the car would never move. I eventually gave up and turned over my emergency blinkers and started calling tow trucks. I was stuck in the center lane of a 4-lane road road at a very busy interstate interchange during rush hour. These were incredibly unsafe conditions as the location of my vehicle almost caused several accidents. It took over 3 hours for a tow truck to show up, move my vehicle from the busy road, and tow it to the local dealer. After investigating, the dealer said the transmission pump blew apart of sent metal throughout the transmission and caused it to be inoperable. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to this occurrence.

Then one of the rear windshield panels exploded in my face. Upon reading online, it looks like a recall was issued for this same problem in Canada but not the USA.

Truck has a CP4 injection pump and they go bad and cost $15,000-$20,000 to repair and if that happens I owe money on the truck and would have to get a loan or figure something out and still have to make a payment on something I can’t even drive! They need to recall it and swap them out to a CP3 and be done with it. Why wait until it cost 10s of thousands of dollars when they can get it done for $3,500 at the most?

While driving down the highway at 60 mph, the truck stumbled then completely died. After coasting to a stop truck would not restart. Towed to a repair shop to find out the Bosch CP 4 fuel pump exploded and contaminated the whole fuel system with metal shavings. A very expensive and lengthy repair. GM has known there is issues with these parts, but has failed to recall and fails to cover repair costs. Other manufacturers using the same part have issued recalls. While I was able to safely the get vehicle to the side of the road, the failure could’ve resulted in an accident causing personal injury or property damage.

I turned the truck off immediately and then approximately 30 seconds later, the rear window on the passenger side shattered. There is a recall that was issued for this exact problem but when i contacted the dealership, I was informed that the recall applied to Canadian vehicle models only and that there was no recall issued in the U.S. for this problem. I believe that there was a great risk for my family's safety as my child sits directly in front of this window and presented an injury risk to her, as well as the overall fire risk that could have occurred if I had not noticed the issue immediately. There were no warnings before the incident occurred. I had to pay out of pocket to have the window replaced.

I was driving at approximately 40 MPH on a busy city street, I was going to be getting on the freeway where my speed would be in excess of 70MPH. Suddenly without any warning, my 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Duramax died. I had no power at all which means no steering, brakes, etc. I was able to get the vehicle off the road with brute force. After the vehicle was towed to the dealership they inspected it and said that the Fuel Injector Pump failed which put metal throughout the whole fuel injection system (>$7000 repair). While doing some additional research on the Internet I find out that this is a common problem for the 2011-2016 GM Duramax trucks, because GM chose to use a Bosch Fuel Injector Pump which is not suitable for use with US low sulphur diesel fuel.

LUCKILY NO ONE WAS IN THE CROSSWALK OR I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. I USED THE E-BRAKE AND MY EXHAUST BRAKE TO HELP SO ME SLOW DOWN. I WAS DOING ABOUT 35MPH. I TOOK THE TRUCK HOME IMMEDIATELY AS SAFE AS I COULD. I CALLED THE GM DEALERSHIP BY ME AND TOOK IT TO THEM. THEY ARE ONLY A FEW MILES AWAY AND I TOOK BACK ROADS TO AVOID TROUBLE. I WAS INFORMED BY THE GM DEALERSHIP THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER. $654.00 DOLLARS TO REPAIR MY 2500 DENALI TRUCK. I CALLED GM SERVICE ALREADY AND THEY INFORMED ME MY TRUCK WAS NOT UNDER THE RECALL. THIS ISSUE OBVIOUSLY EXISTS TO MORE VEHICLES THAN WHAT THEY SPECIFY AND YOU COULD LOSE BRAKES AT ANY MOMENT. GM NEEDS TO RECTIFY THEIR TRUCK BRAKE SITUATION. SOMEONE WILL END UP GETTING KILLED.

I TOOK IT TO THE GMC DEALER IN SPOKANE WASHINGTON THE FOUND THAT THE ALIGNMENT TOW-IN AND RIGHT SIDE CASTER WAS OFF. THIS IS NOT MY FIRST GM TRUCK THE LAST ONE I DROVE 93000 MILES AND NEVER NEEDED AN ALIGNMENT. WHILE DRIVING TO BEND OREGON THE PROBLEM REOCCURRED. I TOOK IT TO THE CHEVROLET GM DEALER IN BEND ALIGNMENT CHECK WAS OK THEY SAID IT MAY BE TIRE PRESSURE RELATED I AM USING THE RECOMMENDED COLD TIRE PRESSURE OF 65 PSI FRONT AND 70 PSI REAR UNLOADED NOT PULLING ANYTHING. UPON RETURNING TO PRESCOTT ARIZONA I TOOK IT TO TIMS GMC DEALER AND THE ALIGNMENT WAS OK. I EMAILED BRIDGSTONE THEY REFERRED ME TO THE PHOENIX BRIDGESTONE DEALER THEY SAID THE TIRES FOR THAT TRUCK SHOULD BE LT 245X75X17 FIRESTONE NOT BRIDGESTONE. THEY SAID THEY WOULD CHANGE THEM OUT BUT NEED AN OK FROM THE GMC DEALER. THE PRESCOTT TIMS GMC DEALER REFUSED TO ACCOMMODATE THE REQUEST.
