Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 131 complaints across the 8 model-year 2016 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

2016 Denali 2500 Diesel - Loose steering, like many of the others complaining. I only have 13,000 miles on the truck since I don't drive it during Ohio winters (salt) and use it to tow my 6500 lb boat. Doesn't feel safe at all when towing. The dealer explained both the pitman and idler arm were worn. $1500 repair bill. Very frustrating that GM doesn't cover this potential safety related issue regarding vehicle control/stability. Several versions of Technical Service Bulletin's exist #PIT5501D as an example.

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed four years ago, the steering wheel became significantly loose, causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact depressed the brake pedal and veered to the side of the road. The contact then continued to drive at slower speed and away from other vehicles. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was repaired under Technical Service Bulletin Number: PIT 5501F; however, after the repair, the front-end of the vehicle and the steering wheel would wobble while depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, the contact stated that the steering wheel failure reoccurred several months ago while driving. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact removed the driver's side wheel cover and discovered that the brake fluid had been leaking inside the wheel well and underneath the floorboard under the steering column. My HMI was "bricked" when onstar pushed an incompatible update when I changed the service plan. While driving the screen has intermittently turned off and on causing temporary unexpected loss of navigation functions, Bluetooth connectivity, and use of the back up camera. This causes a safety issue as the unexpected loss of display and connectivity has caused me to be unable to continue using hands free features during operation, and to no longer view behind the vehicle during entirety of backing. When I contacted OnStar support I was instructed to perform some troubleshooting and was then referred to the Connection Center Team. The CCT representative told me that my hardware was outdated and could not support the update. If a representative can confirm the problem retrospectivly, I think the representatives making changes to the service plan should also be able to proactively confirm incompatibility before causing the issue. There were no warnings. The issues first occured while I was driving on the day (6/25/26) my new plan began and the update was sent. I can make the HMI available for inspection upon request. I don't believe there is any actual issue with the hardware, just a negligent and incompatible software update.

The Service Air Bag warning light was illuminated. After the impact, the contact noticed smoke was leaking into the interior of the vehicle from the front driver-side and passenger-side air bags. The contact stated that the vehicle would not move forward or reverse after the impact. The contact stated that the front driver-side and passenger-side seat belts failed to retract or extend. The contact and her husband were able to unbuckle the seat belts and safely exit the vehicle in time. No injuries were sustained. No police reports or fire reports were filed. The vehicle was deemed a total loss and was towed to the contact's home where it remained for further investigation. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. I remote started my truck yesterday morning to get it warmed up before loading my family. They all then got into the truck, my 5 year old and 8 year old in the back seat in booster seats. I threw in some more bags into the back of the truck and started to climb into the truck. As I did that my kids were starting to get nervous and my wife was pointing and stating that the rear window slider was smoking. I put the key into the ignition and turned the key on. Upon doing that the smoke stopped but a few seconds later there was a loud bang, similar to a gun shot, and the rear passenger side window shattered. My 8 year old had glass hit her and my 5 year old was hysterical. Needless to say, the 5 hour drive home was not much fun for anyone after that occured.

CP4 injection pump failure while driving nearly causing vehicle collision.

    • Filed Jun 2025

The CP4 pump failed while driving causing vehicle to stall. Upon failure, lost power to steering. Luckily we were on an access road for a rest area and not yet on the interstate. This resulted in a 14.5 thousand repair. No prior warning to pump failure. GM has recently settled a class action related to this pumps failure and has never recalled trucks with this pump to avoid failure.

My 2016 GMC Sierra 2500 with a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 engine suffered a complete engine shutdown—an issue that is both hazardous and expensive to repair. Fortunately, mine failed in a parking lot. No warning lights or symptoms were present. Failure is instantaneous and can occur any time rendering the vehicle inoperable on high-speed highways, Intersections, etc. Failure always leaves vehicle occupants stranded, creating an unsafe and dangerous situation. My vehicle was towed to a GMC dealer. Repair costs could be as high as $15,000. The 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 engine is equipped with a Bosch ‘CP4’ high-pressure fuel pump. These pumps are unreasonably fragile and prone to catastrophic failure causing instant contamination of the entire fuel system with metal shavings. General Motors has agreed to pay $35 million to settle with owners following a class action lawsuit that accused the company of installing defective Bosch CP4 high-pressure fuel pumps in certain Chevrolet and GMC pickup models. This action covered only owners in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, or Texas.

Vehicle is a Duramax Diesel engine with a CP4 fuel pump. The pump went out and the entire line/system has to be replaced. While driving the vehicle it lurched, made a noise then went to reduced power mode and shut off. Luckily we had just pulled off from a stop sign, if that happened and the speed of 55 it could of been far worse. Then engine would not restart and had to have vehicle towed.

While Pulling 35' 5th Wheel down freeway, a message appeared in instrument panel telling me the fuel filter was at 0 percent and was going into low power mode. There happend to be an offramp there that I was able to get off the freeway. While making the turn on the offramp the truck died. I pulled over as far as i could whie coasting with no power steering or brakes, leaving truck & trailer partially blocking the offramp. Unable to start the vehicle, I Immediatly contacted Onstar and they dispatched the CHP & tow truck. When CHP arrived he asked when tow truck would be there. Without being able to confirm exactly, and due to safety concerns because of blocking the offramp, he called his own tow truck (Rons Towing) and forced me to move vehicle to safe location. The issue ended up being the injector fuel pump (CP4) that GM was well aware of going out and sending metal fragments throughout the fuel system. I've been told the pump was made in China and not to GM standards. The vehicle has been repaired, all work was covered under extended warrenty, This all could have been avoided if GM would have replaced the faulty fuel pump under recall. Had this happened 100 miles further on our trip we would have been going over Pacheco Pass in Calif. Could have been a total disaster had we been going down the other side with No Power Steering & No Power Brakes pulling a 12,000 lb Trailer in the Dark.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, NOT UNDER AN OVERPASS OR NEAR OTHER CARS WHEN I HEARD A LOUD BANG. THIS NOISE SOUNDED LIKE A BOMB GOING OFF. I PULLED OVER AND LOOKED ON THE TOP OF THE TRUCK AND MY SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED. THERE WASN'T ANYTHING AROUND TO EVEN HIT IT. FROM THE LOOKS OF THE BREAK THERE HAD BEEN AN INTERNAL PRESSURE AS THE GLASS WAS STRESSED OUTWARD. IF THE SUNROOF PROTECTOR WOULD HAVE BEEN OPEN THIS WHOLE EVENT COULD HAVE BEEN LIFE THREATENING.

LT265/60R20 Belt separated from tire, second failure on truck in 2 weeks

    • Filed Jun 2021

Tire tread bulged from center line of tire tread to outside of tread approximately 1 ft long. I had been highway driving for about 4 hours at 70 mph. Truck started vibrating and was becoming worse. I pulled over and found bulge in tire. I took it about 5 miles to Matlock Tire in Lenior City Tn. But by this time the tread was cracking and separating. I was able to get a used tire to bring vehicle home. The service person at Matlock Tire advised me to replace all the tires. If one did it they probably all are bad.The tires have been very well cared for. They have 7/32 tread across all the tires. Very even ware. No dry rot. They had been rotated and inspected at McKenny Chevy in Gastonia NC aweek earlier. I had just come through the mountains on route 40 and if the tire had let go it could have been catastrophic. The DOT tire number is from one of the other tires on truck. Matlock Tire kept bad tire. Attachment is invoice for repair and picture of one of other tires on truck.

HEADLIGHT BEAMS SHAKING IS VERY DISTRACTING DURING NIGHT DRIVING AND THE SHAKING IS QUITE UNSAFE AS YOU CANNOT MAINTAIN A CONSISTENT, UNDISTURBED BEAM OF LIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AT TIMES WHEN SAME IS ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY.

While driving down the road pulling a trailer The steering wheel started to get sloppy it got up to 3 to 4 inches of play in the steering wheel before the wheels return either way The adjustment screw locking nut and clip all came loose and backed out and caused a slap in the steering gearbox The truck became unsafe to drive I had to park the truck until the parts were ordered and the whole gearbox had to be replaced at a cost of over $1500. GM has service bulletins out there on this problem they all came from one assembly factory but they said they would not repair the truck it was under my expense
