2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 103 complaints across the 8 model-year 2022 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.

We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
  • Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
  • Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
  • 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.

  • GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
  • Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.

When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.

Brakes and trailer brakes

Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.

Recalls to check

  • Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
  • Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
  • Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
  • Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
  • Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and pulling a 10,000 pounds trailer, the vehicle experienced an intermittent loss of trailer brakes. The message "Check Trailer Wiring" and another message pertaining to the trailer brake system were displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the Trailer Brake Power Module (TBPM) was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact related the failure to GM Customer Satisfaction Program Number: N232414840 (Intermittent Loss of Trailer Brakes). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance in adding the VIN to the Customer Satisfaction Program. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

My 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD was previously repaired under GM safety recall N232426400 / NHTSA recall 24V060 for the power-unlatching tailgate switch, which can fail from water intrusion. The recall repair was completed and the recall now shows as closed. Recently, the same tailgate switch problem occurred again. The dealer diagnosed water intrusion/corrosion affecting the tailgate release switch circuit, including damage to the related wiring harness/connector. GMC customer assistance stated they could not assist because the recall is closed. I am reporting this as a possible failed or inadequate recall remedy. The same water-intrusion condition addressed by the recall appears to have recurred after the recall repair, and the vehicle now requires additional repair to the same tailgate release system. This raises concern that the recalled safety defect was not fully remedied and that other vehicles may experience repeat failures after the recall is marked complete.

After driving my truck, once I park and turn the truck off it will not shut down electronically due to an error on the dash display that reads “shift to park”. Sometimes I have to mess with the gear shifter when the truck is in park to get it to register that it is parked and shut down completely. It can take up to 15 minutes sometimes to shut down.

    • Filed Aug 2025

After placing the vehicle in park and try to turn it off, I receive a message saying “Shift to Park”. The engine is off and in park, but the vehicle doesn’t recognize it as being in park so all of the electrical stays on. I started complaining about this to the dealerships before my warranty was up but they kept giving me the run around avoiding the fix and now that the warranty is expired they want to help me for a ridiculous fee. This issue happens randomly at least one day a week.

I had taken our GMC Sierra 2500 with LT275/R20 Goodyear Wrangler tires into Henderson Chevrolet for maintenance and to have the tires checked. The technician stated that the front tires were showing tread separation. I was shocked because the tires only had around 20,000 miles. The truck is not used for towing and is kept in the garage away from the sun. I asked the technician to double check the rear tires for separation and he stated they were fine. A couple of weeks later, I was driving to California and there was a loud bang on the rear driver side. The truck indicated the the tire was losing pressure. I pulled over to the side of the busy road as soon as possible. The entire tread was missing form the tire and when it came off it damaged the wheel well and the rear bumper and taillight. There was a lot of traffic on the highway and not much shoulder it was a pretty scary and unsafe situation I but got the tire changed with the spare. About an hour later the passenger side tire blew up, there was way more damage on this side including bent exhaust and damage to the fender. I had to get roadside assistance to change the tire so I changed both rear tires so i could have a spare. When I took the car back to Henderson Chevrolet they told me this is a common problem they have had 10 in the last 6 months. Boulder Autobody said they had seen 7 in the last 6 months. Henderson Chevrolet sent both tires to Goodyear to be examined and they conveniently lost one of them and stated that the tires were not defective. Thank goodness no one was hurt, this could have easily killed someone.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 MPH, there was an explosion, and the entire tread width of the front driver side tire delaminated and wrapped around the axle. The contact stated that the tire did not deflate, and the radial belts were visible. No warning light illuminated. The contact stated that two months later, with the second set of tires on the vehicle, the failure reoccurred with the driver’s side rear tire. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the two front tires were replaced. The contact stated that with the second set of four tires, the failure had occurred twice. The tires were the original equipment. The contact stated that the tires had a tread depth of 4/32. The contact attempted to notify the manufacturer, but the call was disconnected. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.

Traveling in Texas near Christoval, TX at 75 mph on smooth roads. The vehicle had 26,000+ miles and tread depth was over 4/32nd. Front tires were replaced. On 21 October 2025 the tread separated from the left rear tire 90 percent of circumference and the tire ripped open. Vehicle had 27,600+ miles on it. Traveling near McLoud, OK on Hwy 102? at about 50 mph on smooth road. Rear two tires replaced on 23 October. These two tires are in my possession for inspection, tread depth was 4/32nd and 5/32nd. Claims have been submitted to insurance. Picture of 2nd incident attached. These two incidents indicate to me that these tires are defective and should be recalled. Failure has been verified by GMC dealer and Walmart. There were no warning lights either time.

Concerning Goodyear Wrangler Trailrunner AT P275/65/20 tires that came stock with my 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, which currently has 42,000 miles on it. While driving a round trip of no more than 30 miles the evening of 11/29/24, I noticed a slight repetative jaring motion, which I initially attributed to a potential transmission issue. The bump rapidly worsened halfway though the drive. Upon inspection at the time, I could not see any visible damage to the tire. However, the issue escalated aggressively during my return home, resulting in the tire blowing out and detreading entirely. This failure caused significant damage to the body of my truck, amounting to an estimated $3,500 in repair costs. I believe this incident is due to a defect in the tire, as such occurrences are highly uncommon and unexpected from a product of your reputation. I have oil changes as recommended by the trucks service maunual and with ample tread left on the tire and good scores of inspection it begs the question on how a tire could fail so abruptly. I have 3 other tires with ample tread which should last at least another 10k miles but I'm gravely concerned with continued use of them for fear another blowout could cause a fatal accident.

The Exhaust Pressure Differential Sensor Pipe (boost pipe) blew off while towing a heavy trailer uphill on a busy interstate. I had to cross 3 lanes of traffic to get as far as possible off the road. The truck was sent into limp mode and would barely crawl. Our lives were put at risk of being hit by the many tractor trailers traveling that highway, or another driver traveling at high speeds. The truck was eventually towed to the nearest GM dealer for service. The pipe was replaced, but the faulty one was not kept on hand. The repair was not covered by GM. The extended warranty covered the pipe repair only, with out of pocket still being over $400. There were no warning lights on the dash until after the pipe blew off and the truck was thrown into limp mode. This is a known problem with these diesel engines, for years, yet nothing has been done by GM to fix the problem. Owners are replacing with aftermarket parts because the factory parts won't hold up. This damaged the DPF and DEF system as a result. The replacement parts are listed in my owners manual under the 5 year/100000 mile powertrain warranty, yet the claim was denied by GM. There are forum after forum with these failures for the past 15 15 years or more, yet nothing has been done to fix the problem and owners are put at risk of injury or death. When the dealer replaced the part, it was disposed of so no inspection could be made by anyone else to determine if it was defective.

The gmc trailering app will not read trailer tire pressure above 100psi. When trailer tires carry a safe psi amount above 100psi the trailering app will not be able to confirm if the trailer tire is low in pressure which could cause a massive wreck if driver did not know the trailer tire was going bad. Truck was taken to dealer, they tried to follow bulletin 22-NA-172 to have the pressure to read above 100psi. But they could not get it to work, I was told it was a trailering app issue and nothing they can do until GM takes the steps to fix the trailering app.

[XXX]: After arriving home and parking in my driveway (plugged in the block heater that came installed from the factory), approximately 35 minutes later my neighbor rang the doorbell. She was yelling that my truck was on fire! The flames were starting to hit my eaves on my house. I put the fire out with my hose. The Sparks Fire Department had to pry open my hood to disconnect the batteries in order to stop the truck from lighting back on fire. The vehicle has been inspected by General Motors and turned over to their insurance. My insurance has also inspected the vehicle and stated they believe that the wiring to the block heater was faulty. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem. This truck has 19,000 miles and is 1.5 years old (2022). How could this be turned over to GM's insurance and not under warranty? I have not had my truck for over 2 months now. I wonder how many of these trucks are lighting on fire? The truck is currently at the local dealership and is available for inspection. The entire engine was engulfed, melting out, tires and windshield exploded from heat etc. Total loss. Vehicle was inspected by insurance co fire investigator, no origin confirmed due to extent of damage. Hello, I purchased a 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 2500 in August of 2022. I then purchased a 2022 Alliance Avenue 30RLS in September of 2022. The first time we took the Alliance Avenue out on a camping trip (October 2022), we had brake controller issues. The brake controller would suddenly disconnect and I would have an error on the screen saying that the controller was no longer connected, and the light would go off on the brake controller on the dashboard. At this point, we had no trailer brakes. This issue happened several times, and the controller would go offline and come back, sometimes within seconds, sometimes in minutes (up to 10+). Strangely, the lights and signals continued to work. After the trip, I brought the trailer back to our RV dealership where they inspected the brakes and said we were okay on that end. I then took the truck to a GMC Dealership who informed me that everything was good on their end... Next trip, same issue. Took the trailer to the RV dealership and they took the system down to the brake pads and said they didn't see anything, but they rerouted some brake wiring just in case. On the way home from the RV dealership, the brake controller continued to fail. Took the truck back to GMC, they found nothing. Had a 3rd party RV repair tech install a solar shutoff switch and replace the trailer side brake plug in pigtail to rule that out. The issue persisted. Took the truck to a Chevy Dealership, the found no issues. Took the trailer camping several times, same issue persisted, and we were in dangerous situations over the Colorado Mountains, having this fail multiple times over Eisenhower Pass and other mountain passes. Took the trailer back to the RV Dealership, they found nothing - took it to the Chevy Dealership, they replaced the truck bed plug-in. The issue persisted. The Chevy Dealership informed me there was a module replacement for the GMC 2500 2023-2024 trucks, but they could not do that for me.

Meanwhile, all of the lights on the trailer still work. After about one second, another message appears and says “trailer brakes connected” and the light on the brake controller comes back on. When this happens, the larger screen sometimes has a message that says “trailer brake gain recalled” but sometimes it says “brake gain not recalled”. When the message “check trailer wiring” comes on, the trailer brakes don’t work. The trailer brakes start working again when the message “trailer brakes connected” comes back on. You can feel this in the truck, especially when it goes off, on, off, on, etc while you are trying to slow down. You literally feel the truck surging as the brakes are intermittently being applied. I have taken the truck to a GMC dealership and they were not able to duplicate the issues since the issue only happens when the truck is hooked up to a trailer that has trailer brakes. I had a certified RV mechanic inspect the trailer brakes and they are working like they should. I hooked the same trailer up to a Ford F-250 and had zero issues. I hooked the same trailer back up to my GMC and immediately had the same issues. I am taking the truck and trailer to a different GMC dealership on March 11th to see if they can duplicate this and diagnose the problem. I called GM corporate customer service and they were basically no help. This is a big safety issue because the truck is not telling the trailer’s brakes to function like they are designed, which makes it much more difficult to slow down, especially going down hill. I have done a bunch of research on this problem and found numerous online forums on this topic, so I know I am not the only one experiencing this

Filled tank with diesel and truck wouldn’t turn back on. We were next to a jiffy lube and they were able to run a scan and it said there was a broken fuel module. There’s only around 60,000 miles on it, it’s 4 years old, and left my son and I stranded.

My booster is leaking into the floor. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the booster and it needs to be replaced. This could make the truck lose its brakes and run into something or someone.

The headlight was flickering. For a week before it burnt out completely. A flickering headlight causes a distraction to other drivers. Not to mention a LED light shouldn’t burn out in one year.
