Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 105 complaints across the 8 model-year 2019 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2015–2019 · 6.6L Duramax diesel (LML 2015–2016, L5P 2017–2019) and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. The diesel changed partway through: the Duramax LML in 2015–2016, and the redesigned Duramax L5P in 2017–2019. Gas trucks use the 6.0L V8.

We counted 1,326 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2015–2019 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 413 from LML diesels, 311 from L5P diesels and 512 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • 2015–2016 diesels (LML) carry the high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) risk.
  • 2017–2019 diesels (L5P) use a different fuel pump and have far fewer fuel pump complaints. Block heater cord recalls address a fire risk.
  • Brake pedal recall on 2015–2016 trucks: the pedal can come loose.
  • Trailer brake warnings are frequently reported.
  • Gas trucks: the transmission is the most common complaint (about 1 in 5).

2015–2016 Duramax LML: fuel pump

Fuel pump problems come up in 61 of 413 LML complaints, about 3 times the rate of the 2017–2019 L5P (16 of 311). The LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000. There was no recall.

When buying a 2015–2016 diesel: ask whether the pump was replaced or upgraded, and for fuel filter records.

2017–2019 Duramax L5P

Generally well regarded. Commonly reported repairs include DEF tank sensors, the MAP sensor, plastic intercooler pipes, and the #4 fuel injector connector (GM bulletin 23-NA-027). Fire comes up in 30 L5P complaints. GM recalled 2017–2019 diesels because the engine block heater cord can short and overheat (recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000). Confirm both are done.

Brakes and trailer brakes

  • GM recalled 2015–2016 trucks because the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative (recalls 16V069000 and 18V578000).
  • Owners frequently report "Service trailer brake system" warnings that can cut the trailer brakes while towing. If you tow, test the trailer brake controller with a trailer connected.

Gas trucks

The 6.0L engine is simple and long-lived. Transmission complaints are the top topic on gas trucks (99 of 512). Test-drive for harsh or slipping shifts.

Other recalls

  • Dual fuel tank sensors and a rear tank that can collapse on some diesels (recalls 19V088000 and 23V047000)
  • Front seat belt retractors on 2017–2018 trucks (recall 17V567000)
  • Several airbag recalls, including roof-rail and side curtain inflators

  • 2015–2016 Duramax fuel pump (CP4) failure

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.

Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.

  • Loose brake pedal (2015–2016)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: The brake pedal feels loose or doesn't work right.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls for the brake pedal pivot nut.

May be covered free by recall 16V069000 / 18V578000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Block heater cord fire risk (2017–2019 diesels)

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: A burnt or melted block heater cord or plug.

Fix: Covered by GM recalls. Don't use the block heater until it's checked.

May be covered free by recall 19V328000 / 21V496000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 'Service trailer brake system' warning

    Easy DIY

Signs: Trailer brake warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing.

Fix: Start with the simple things: clean and inspect the 7-pin trailer connector and the trailer's wiring. If it continues, have a dealer check the trailer brake module.

  • L5P cracked intercooler pipe

    Easy DIY

Signs: A loud pop, then low power and limp mode.

Fix: Replace the plastic charge pipe. Many owners upgrade to a metal pipe.

    • Filed Jul 2026

On 07/10/2026 at approximately 1:10 a.m., the parked and unoccupied vehicle caught fire while turned off. The vehicle had not been driven for several hours. A neighbor was awakened by the horn/alarm and popping noises, observed fire near the passenger-side cab/engine area, and called 911. The fire rapidly spread throughout the cab, engine compartment, rocker-panel areas, wheel wells, and truck bed, creating an explosion hazard and threatening a nearby occupied residence and garage. The fire department extinguished the blaze, but the vehicle was completely destroyed. Before the fire, the vehicle had experienced recurring coolant warnings, a DEF-system warning, and delayed starting associated with the main battery. No smoke, fuel odor, intentional ignition source, charging device, or known external fire source was present before the incident. Weather was calm. The exact failed component and cause remain UNKNOWN. A firefighter stated that the apparent fire origin was near the passenger side of the vehicle. The remains are available for inspection, subject to coordination with the vehicle owner and insurer. The incident has been reported to the fire department, insurer, manufacturer, and NHTSA.

    • Filed Jun 2025

The manufacturer placed two 12v batteries to start the truck with one being located on the passenger side just in front of the cowl of the cab. The factory OEM batteries are known to overheat when charging which is exactly what mine did and as the battery boils over with sulfuric acid, the acid is vaporized and ingested into the cabin. It’s a diesel so it’s common for me to take my dog in the rear crew cab with me and leave the engine running so the cabin will stay cool in the summer while I work my contractor job. When I let the engine idle with windows up and AC on the overcharged battery introduced the vaporized sulfuric acid into the cabin and rendered the interior deadly toxic. Luckily I was only gone from the truck for about 10 minutes but in this amount of time the acid was very bad and caused burns in my dogs throat and mine while driving home. I can only imagine if this scenario were to take place with kids left in the truck for many reasons to stay cool but could easily turn into a deadly situation. PLEASE look into this before someone or some poor animal is fatally injured or killed.

I would press the dismiss button but it would not stop from appearing and dinging over and over. I took vehicle to dealer ship since I have remaining bumper to bumper and extended warranty coverage. To my dismay I find out the Dash Trailer Brake System switch is faulty. Good thing I had an extended warranty since the bumper to bumper does not cover electrical. While truck was still under warranty the same alert came on but the GMC dealership did not find and issues. I feel the trailer brake system was defective from the start. I am being force to pay over $300.00 out of my pocket since my extended warranty did not cover the entire cost. SHAME on you GM for putting cheap quality parts on expensive trucks...

While merging into highway traffic the truck surged with RPM going to 5,000. Shortly after this event there was a grinding or rattling noise in the transmission bell housing along with unusual shifting behavior and a repeatble vibration + rotational noise between 50 and 60 MPH. The vehicle was brought to the dealer for inspection at least 4 times with claims they could not hear the obvious noise that did not go away. On the last drop off, I picked up the vehicle and the noise was gone but the shifting behavior and the constant vibration from the transmission still persists. The dealer said GMC would replace the transmission for approximately $10,000 but I would need to cover 50% of the cost. Vehicle had 35,700 miles on it and was 4 months beyond the 5yr warranty. The connectors to the fuel pump have failed causing the truck to mechanically fail and not operate. This is a common problem per the diesel technician who diagnosed our truck and in his opinion should not be happening as often as it does. It’s specifically the cylinder 4 injector control circuit and diagnosis states the pins are corroded.

The sockets in the rear brake lights had excessive corrosion and was causing the terminals on the bulbs to deteriorate. The lights were malfunctioning in all situations from braking, turn indicator and running lights. I was notified by the system that there was a problem. After trying to resolve the problem and replacing the bulbs the condition only worsened. I was then pulled over by law enforcement that told me I had nearly no rear lights at night. After banging the plastic light frames I was able to make it home. I brought my truck into the dealer who inspected and found faulty wiring from what I was told. I them paid to have both rear harness change and all the bulbs replaced to repair the condition. After review of the repair the dealer made no additional precautions to ensure that this condition would not return by placing any type of waterproofing dielectric grease in the sockets or connectors. So was this faulty wiring or simply a known defect. The dealer had them in stock which was surprising since I figure they would need to be ordered.

Driver seat belt would not recoil. Took to Royal GMC of Tucson and they said it was not a warranty covered part and would not repair it unless I paid for the seat belt replacement. Obviously, I need a seat belt as a safety feature being the driver so I had them order the seatbelt and they installed it. See attached receipt. I believe this should be a warranty item from the manufacturer as it is defective and a serious safety issue. The vehicle is a 2019. I am the only one that drives this vehicle and I have never had any accidents etc.
