Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 112 complaints across the 8 model-year 2020 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2020–2026 · 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and 6.6L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. This generation brought the 10-speed Allison automatic, the 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel and a new 6.6L V8 gas engine.

We counted 1,208 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2020–2026 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 866 from diesel trucks and 313 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The 10-speed transmission is the most frequently reported problem, about 1 in 4 complaints on both engines. The diesel valve body was recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.
  • Trailer brake controller warnings are commonly reported.
  • Power tailgates were recalled for opening unexpectedly.
  • 2024 trucks have extra recalls, including a steering gear shaft that can break.

10-speed transmission

Transmission problems come up in 218 diesel and 75 gas complaints. Owners describe sudden hard downshifts, limp mode, and valve body failures, sometimes with long waits for parts.

  • GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks because the transmission control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels (recall 24V797000), and issued a follow-up recall for trucks repaired incorrectly (26V083000).
  • Some 2024 trucks needed full transmission replacements for a related valve problem.

When buying: confirm the transmission recalls are done and ask for any transmission repair records. On the test drive, watch for harsh downshifts or warning messages.

Brakes and trailer brakes

Brakes come up in 268 complaints. Many are about the trailer brake controller: "Check trailer wiring" or "Trailer brakes disconnected" warnings that cut the trailer brakes while towing. Others mention brake noise and a soft pedal when towing. If you tow, test the controller with a trailer connected.

Recalls to check

  • Power-unlatching tailgates may open unexpectedly after water gets in (recalls 24V060000 and 24V894000). Door and tailgate complaints are common (133).
  • Steering gear shaft can fracture on some 2024 trucks (recall 23V549000)
  • Fuel injector flow software on some 2024 diesels
  • Hood latch on some 2020 trucks (recalls 20V142000 and 20V324000)
  • Brake module water intrusion and fire risk on some 2021–2022 trucks (recall 21V758000)

While driving vehicle flashed engine power reduction signal and then the emergency brake automatic feature came on abruptly. Fortunately, I had been able to slow down after the reduced power, but if I wouldn't have quickly reacted to that, I think the emergency brake system would have caused a safety issue. Now. The vehicle is incapacitated. There were two recalls that describe this exact situation on the same year and model of truck, but my VIN number did not fall. Under that recall. The recall was for the sensor and then the second recall was because the first recall didn't correctly fix it. But the details of the faulty sensor are exactly what happened to my truck. So it sounds to me like they had more problems than just the recall that they acknowledged but they have not expanded it. My quest is to have them expand the recall to all of the vehicles that had the same problem.

While driving down a highway doing between 45 and 55 mph the transmission suddenly and completely faulted causing the truck to come to a complete stop. Just enough power to get to the shoulder luckily. The transmission had basically completely blown out, fluid everywhere. The insurance company did not find any comprehensive damage. The entire transmission needs to be replaced. There were no indicators showing any problems, no alerts, no warning whatsoever. Mechanics said there was a lot of metal coming out of the transmission. The truck is currently in a mechanic shop awaiting the new transmission, so at this time it is available for inspection. The safety issue here is that it happened on a busy highway, and the vehicle was no longer drivable so it needed to be towed causing more time spent on the side of the road.

I have taken the vehicle to my local dealership six times. The tailgate started opening and the headlights were blinking on and off. This happened 3 months after I bought it. The dealership told me they changed the tailgate switch and they said there wasn’t anything wrong with my lights. Two weeks after the dealership said they changed the tailgate switch, the tailgate started opening and closing. The lights also stopped working driving down the road at night. This happened 3 different times at night. The tailgate opened when I was pulling a trailer and it caved in and I had to pay to have it repaired. The dealership said it wasn’t their problem. During this time the power steering fluid was leaking under my steering wheel and ruined my carpet. The dealership has yet to acknowledge that problem. I still have to put power steering fluid in the truck every week and my interior is ruined. The tailgate is still opening on its own. I had to start charging my batteries up every morning because they were dead. I got up one morning and the batteries were dead and the truck wouldn’t start. I had to buy a new $300 key. Took it back to the dealership for an appointment. The truck sat there for a week and I called for an update and they didn’t even remember the truck was there. It still sat there 4 days after that. They told me the truck needs new batteries and it wasn’t under warranty. I spent $1000 on 2 batteries. Tailgate is still going down. The lights are still going on and off. And then the lights and the locks will go on and off while the truck is parked and turned off. And now the new batteries are becoming weak and I am having to get the truck jumped off several times. I have had the truck at the dealership 6 times and they still haven’t fixed anything. When they have my truck I am losing money because I am a business owner and I use my truck for work. I lost all of my tools. I have lost time and money because the dealer has yet to help and do their job. I need help GM

I have had the truck at the dealership 6 times and they still haven’t fixed anything. When they have my truck I am losing money because I am a business owner and I use my truck for work. I lost all of my tools. I have lost time and money because the dealer has yet to help and do their job. I need help GM

While driving my 2020 GMC 2500 Denali with the Duramax Diesel engine, the power assist for the steering and brakes failed without any warning. This made the truck nearly impossible to steer and stop. Luckily, I was able to avoid a collision and get the truck stopped in a safe location. The truck is currently being towed to Rivard GMC in Tampa, Fl. Doing an internet search, I found this problem has happened to others as well. Please ask GM to rectify this extremely dangerous defect.

While towing my dump trailer early in the morning for about 20 minutes I noticed sudden hard up shifting and down shifting in some gears on flat surface roads. I then proceeded to approach an incline hill about a 5% grade and then, what I've recently learned, my transmission locked up and released for a split second. The roads were slick so it didn't seem too harsh, I continued with no incident for another 40 miles and then it happened again while pulling up a 7% grade in a left hand sharp turn at 40 mph. The truck fish tailed and jack knifed my trailer on the left rear side of my truck and the front left side of the trailer. I was on a one lane road and had to continue until I reached my detitanation, I slowed and maintained a speed of 45 in order to prevent it from happening again but it did it 5 more times before reaching my destination. I'm currently scheduled to have the transmission checked on 02/27/2025 at Peterson's Chevrolet Nampa Idaho. In the meantime, I have no means of using any of my trailers.

There is an issue that is causing the batteries to die. This in return causes the Vehicle to go into Limp home mode with no warning. The "issue" was supposed to be resolved by the Dealer in March 2022. The resolution was that one battery was bad. The vehicle is equipped with two batteries. Each of which is sufficient to run the vehicle. A single battery failure should not have caused the truck to have a power limitation. Furthermore the issue was not resolved and General Motors and the Local dealership refuse to continue to work on the issue. This is even after filling complaints with BBB. As of November 2022 the issue has cause both batteries to go bad. The dealer has refused to work on the vehicle and it has been out of service for more than 30 days. Secondary issue. The dealer has refused to work on the vehicle but computer is locked by GM so that only GM equipment can see full scope of codes. This means I can not have third parties work on the vehicle. This is can get the vehicle stuck in areas where there is not GM facilities and GM will not provide any assistance as it is not under warranty. This has also prevented me from finding the actual resolution to the problem.

I was travelling south bound on the highway at 70 mph when out of no where the left rear tire failed. The tread peeled back like an alligator skin and tore apart the side of my truck and caused me to fishtail all over the highway. I was able to avoid colliding with other vehicles on the road and miraculously made it to the shoulder of the highway. The tire is a Goodyear Wrangler TrailRunner AT in a size LT275/65/R20. I still have the remaining parts of the tire. My vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, but the GMC dealer turned me away and told me I had to deal with Goodyear directly. I reached out to Goodyear to file a claim for the tire failure and damages related to it. They have been ignoring me for over a week, so I have filed a claim with my insurance company to handle the damages. I'm currently waiting to get my truck into the shop for repairs. There were no indications of any issues with the tire. I had them rotated as recommended by the manufacturer and kept the tire pressure at the recommended levels through the dealer when my vehicle was serviced. The TPMS light came on as soon as the tire failed and lost pressure showing the vehicle tire pressure monitoring system was working properly when the tire failed.

The contact indicated that the first failure occurred while driving approximately 60 MPH; the rear driver’s side tire experienced a blowout. During the failure, the driver’s side rear quarter panel was severely damaged. The contact stated that later on while driving at an undisclosed speed, the rear passenger’s side tire experienced a similar blowout causing damage to the passenger’s side rear quarter panel. Additionally, on another occasion while driving approximately 50 MPH on the same road trip, the front passenger’s side tire experienced tread separation. While at the service center the mechanic discovered that the front driver’s side tire had also experienced partial tread separation. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 25,400.

This is a hazard: if I am on a trip and the system shuts off I could be stranded anywhere with the reduced speed that the DEF system creates. If this system is designed to shut off (with warning) there should be ample supplies at all GMC dealers for repair. If there aren't ample supplies the system should NOT shut the truck down.
