2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 102 complaints across the 8 model-year 2013 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2011–2014 · 6.6L Duramax LML diesel and 6.0L V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are mechanically the same trucks, so these notes cover both, in 2500HD and 3500HD. Engines are the 6.6L Duramax LML diesel, the first Duramax with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), and the 6.0L V8 gas.
We counted 1,099 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2011–2014 Silverado HDs and Sierra HDs: 407 from diesel trucks and 432 from gas trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- The high-pressure fuel pump (CP4.2) is the most expensive known LML failure.
- DEF heaters and NOx sensors are commonly reported emissions repairs.
- Airbag recalls are a top complaint topic. Make sure they were done.
- Transmission complaints are common on both engines (about 1 in 8).
Duramax LML fuel pump (CP4.2)
Fuel pump problems come up in 49 diesel complaints, and owners describe sudden stalling and no-starts. Like Ford's 6.7L of the same era, the LML uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. When it fails, metal can contaminate the whole fuel system, and repair sources report bills of $8,000 to $15,000 for a full fuel system replacement. There was no recall for these years.
When buying: ask whether the pump has been replaced or upgraded (some owners switch to a different pump design as prevention) and for fuel filter records. A scan for low fuel pressure codes is worth doing.
DEF and NOx sensors
DEF heater failures that put the truck into reduced power are commonly reported, and 2011 trucks are known for NOx sensor problems that trigger "Poor DEF quality" messages. Ask whether the emissions system has been removed ("deleted"), which can cause inspection and legal problems.
Airbag recalls
Airbags come up in about 1 in 4 complaints, often from owners waiting on recall parts. Passenger airbag inflator recalls cover 2011–2014 trucks (including 21V051000, 21V053000 and 21V054000). Check that they're completed.
Other things to check
- Steering wear: idler arms, pitman arms and tie rods are frequently replaced on these trucks. Check for play and clunks.
- Cracked dashboards are commonly reported (27 complaints).
- 3500s with dual fuel tanks were recalled for a fuel level sensor problem (recall 17V664000).
- Rust on rocker panels, cab corners, frame and brake lines.
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel shop, including a scan for fuel pressure and DEF codes.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Duramax LML fuel pump (CP4) failure
Best left to a shopSigns: Sudden stalling or no-start, low fuel pressure codes such as P0087.
Fix: Prevention: change the fuel filter on schedule and buy fuel from busy stations. Some owners replace the CP4 with a different pump design as prevention. A failed pump usually means a full fuel system replacement at a diesel shop.
DEF heater and NOx sensor problems
Moderate DIYSigns: 'Poor DEF quality' or reduced power messages, check engine light.
Fix: Scan for codes. Common fixes are a NOx sensor or the DEF heater and tank assembly.
Worn idler arm and pitman arm
Moderate DIYSigns: Loose, wandering steering, clunks, play in the steering wheel.
Fix: Replace the idler arm and pitman arm, and check tie rods. Many owners add an idler arm support brace. Get an alignment afterward.
Cracked dashboard
Easy DIYSigns: Cracks across the dash top, especially near the passenger airbag.
Fix: Cover it with a molded dash cover or replace the dash pad. Make sure a cover doesn't block the airbag.

I was driving and the transmission control module failed, putting the truck into limp mode with no prior warning. This was a hazard to myself and other drivers as it happened on a very busy road. I use this truck to pull our fifth wheel camper and luckily we were not pulling the camper at that time or this could’ve been a lot worse with the truck just stalling putting my families safety at risk and being broke down in the middle of nowhere. I took the truck to a repair shop in the city that I live in and it was confirmed that the TCM was bad. Tried to order a new TCM and they are back ordered for months and even over a year. Had to send it into a company in South Carolina for repair of the TCM with a cost of approximately $1300. There are thousands of people with this issue, and this should’ve been addressed by GM and a recall sent out to the owners of the vehicles. After the truck went into limp mode, there was a error message but no other prior warning.

The TCM failed while my husband was driving the pick up and this also set off the posi traction control and stabilization link. The truck has fluctuating shifting and could have cause a wreck if there had been someone behind him because the speed dropped on the tuck and it the transmission can't shift properly or consistently for safe driving. The part has been on nationwide backorder for over a year.. this truck can not function properly with out this part. Calling the dealership there are many vehicles affected with this problem and no estimates time of part arrival replacement. The dealership knew exactly what the problem was when called but didn't recommend dropping the truck off as there are no ETA on replacement. Their recommendations is to research online to try to have the part repaired. No the part has not been inspected as it it unsafe to drive at the moment and there are no available replacement parts for the TCM at this time. The warning lights did not come on until the part failed to allow the transmission to shift. Per some people on a face book group this has apparently been a known issue with this part since 2011.

Dash is cracked in multiple places. Dash is not structural however loose shards of plastic pose a serious safety hazard if they were to come loose as a the result of a sudden change in acceleration. Vehicle is low milage with 130k miles, previous owner failed to report or repair the failed dash prior to my ownership. It is a common failure on GM vehicles however it is very expensive to repair, unwarranted, yet poses a serious safety hazard. Dash will need to be repaired to ensure the safety of me and my family.

THE SELLER PROVIDED A COPY OF A CARFAX REPORT WHICH SHOWED THE VEHICLE HAD 52000 MILES ON IT WITH NO DAMAGE REPORTED, HOWEVER I WAS UNABLE TO RUN MY OWN CARFAX AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE DUE LACK OF INTERNET ACCESS. LATER ON AFTER THE PURCHASE I WAS ABLE TO LOOK UP MY OWN CARFAX AND IT SHOWED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD 314,635 MILES AS THE LAST ODOMETER READING AS WELL AS MODERATE DAMAGE REPORTED. I CHECKED ON AUTOCHECK AS WELL AND THE SAME MILES APPEARED BUT DAMAGE WAS NOT REPORTED IN THIS INSTANCE. I VIEWED THE PINK SLIP AT THE TIME AS WELL AND IT APPEARED TO BE LEGITIMATE BUT AFTER CLOSER VIEWING WHERE THE LAST ODOMETER READING WAS WRITTEN IT LOOKED AS IF HE HAD FORGED THE NUMBERS AND CHANGED THEM. I AM UNSURE AS TO WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT. I DO NOT KNOW HOW MILES ARE ON THE VEHICLE AND I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S ANYTHING ELSE WRONG OR FRAUDULENT REGARDING THIS. I called my local GMC dealer (Maxwell GMC, Round Rock, TX) in regard to the Takata Air Bag recall to get some details about the repair (e.g. length of time for repair, parts availability, etc.) In addition to their reponse regarding the length of time and parts availability I was told that their was a high probability that the dash on my truck would crack during the airbag repair. I was also told that the GMC dealer would not cover the cost of the dash damage as a result of the airbag recall work. Shouldn't the repair of the air bag cover any related costs as a result of the repair such such as damage to the dash?

The contact owns a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road, where a mobile independent mechanic diagnosed that the fuel pump had failed. The mechanic determined that the entire fuel system assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to an unknown dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was currently being towed to the residence. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the repair could not be covered because the VIN was not included in a related recall and the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 206,000.

I have a 2013 GMC Sierra, purchased new in 2012, has approximately 35,000 miles. The check engine light came on while driving and suddenly another light came on. Then a third light came on claiming poor engine fluid quality. I immediately stopped at an auto parts store and put DEF fluid in the pickup and continued to drive thinking the lights would go out, but instead a warning was flashing on the dash that says after so many miles the truck will be slowed down. We started getting nervous because we were driving on the highway and if the truck suddenly slows down whilst driving in highspeed traffic, our slower vehicle would potentially cause a collision and put us and others in harms way. In reading your own safety site, there is a recall on the vehicle regarding faulty airbags, so it could be even worse! In our investigations of our current issue, we have found that there was a lawsuit from 2019 against GM and their faulty fuel system with their trucks. See link here https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2019/08/07/lawsuit-says-gm-sold-trucks-not-compatible-american-diesel-fuel/1943084001/ many people on many different forums have also complained about this same problem with no fixes, the only suggestions are to remove the emissions parts and refab the motor. GM tells them that they need to only use their specific DEF fluid, which is steering. GM is very well aware of the problems, because they have employees following these forums and commenting on them.(Dieselplace.com) The truck can be made available for you to see/inspect and I refuse to drive the truck until this issue is resolved.

Transmission Control Module failure The TCM went out one day with no warning. Sitting at a red light, the light turned green, I started to go, and got about 20 feet into the intersection when suddenly it was like my truck shifted into neutral gear. Motor would rev but I couldn't move forward or backward. I was stuck in the middle of a busy intersection. My check engine light came on and the vehicle stability control light began flashing, it was as if everything in my truck was going haywire. I turned my hazards on as vehicles were whizzing by us, barely missing us. My wife and I got out and with the help of a few other drivers we attempted to push the truck out of the roadway but it was too heavy. We got back in and when I started the truck, all the lights were still on but this time it went into gear and we were able to leave the intersection under our own power. I was able to drive the vehicle to the dealership in 2nd gear. Luckily it was close. They diagnosed the vehicle. Code U-0101 lost communication with TCM was the diagnosis. Unfortunately, that part was on back order and it took 9 months to get one. Dealership replaced the part and all has been we'll since then.

WHEN THIS OCCURS, IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTINUE THE TURN OF THE WHEEL TO COMPLETE YOUR TURN. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE NEW TO RECENT AND WE ARE ALWAYS TOLD THAT THEY CANNOT RE-CREATE THE ISSUE, SO THERE IS NOTHING TO FIX. THE PROBLEM WILL LIKELY RESULT IN A CRASH AT SOME POINT IF IT IS NOT ADDRESSED, AS IT CREATES A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION AND INABILITY TO CONTROL THE TURN OF THE VEHICLE. On 9/20/23 my truck suffered a brake failure in which one of the front calipers ruptured and there was a complete loss of braking. The brakes were repaired the following day and an "ABS" light remained on after the brakes were repaired and the brake lines were bled. The vehicle codes were checked and a "C0110_04 Pump motor circuit open" fault was detected. It should be noted that even though the brake system was bled and and part were replaced, there were no brakes and the vehicle could not be driven. I had the vehicle towed to Rossi GMC in Washington, NJ and they diagnosed the problem as a bad Electronic Brake Control Module and Motor. Then I was advised by their service department that no parts were available because of the General Motors strike and there was no date as to when the parts would be available. I asked if I could try to locate the parts myself and they agreed as long as they were genuine GM parts. After calling hundreds of GM/Chevy dealers I was able to locate one (1) EBCM at All American Chevrolet/Cadillac in Muncie, IN. After speaking with their parts department, they advised me that they have the part and they won't sell it to me over the phone, only in person. I live over 9 hours away from the dealer and this was not feasible. My complaint is this, although the ABS system in my truck was not functioning properly should the regular brake system still be working? If so, why is mine not. This is a HUGE safety concern considering if the ABS system were to fail at highway speeds this could cause a bad crash.

I OWN A 2013 GMC SIERRA 4WD CREW CAB THAT IS HAVING BRAKING PROBLEMS. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON 05/29/2013 NEW FROM BILL SMITH BUICK-GMC INC. LOCATED IN CULLMAN, AL AS A NEW VEHICLE AND AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE IT HAD 7173 MILES ON IT AS STATED ON THE ODOMETER DISCLOSURE STATEMENT. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 41585 MILES ON IT THAT INDICATED I HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE 36412 MILES. I HAVE HAD TWO INCIDENTS WITH THE BRAKES WHERE THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP WITH THE BRAKES FULLY APPLIED. THE FIRST TIME WAS WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 15000 MILES ON IT. THE SECOND TIME OCCURRED THIS PAST THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2014 WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AT 25 MPH AND THE CAR JUST CONTINUED TO ROLL UP HILL UNTIL I HIT A CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE OLDER BUICK LASABER REAR END OR BUMPER BUT MY FRONT BUMPER WAS PUSHED IN ABOUT 2 INCHES. IF I HAD BEEN ON THE LEVEL OR WAS GOING ABOVE 25 MPH I SUSPECT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES. WHAT?S HAPPENING IS WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED THE CAR STARTS TO SHUDDER AND SOUNDS LIKE YOUR BANGING ON A TIN CAN. WHEN THAT HAPPENS THE TRUCK IS NOT STOPPING OR SLOWING AT ALL AND THE BRAKE PEDAL IS AS FAR DOWN AS IT CAN GO. PUMPING THE BRAKE WILL CAUSE THE BRAKES TO RECOVER AND THE VEHICLE WILL STOP. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN A CONSISTENT ISSUE. THIS LAST THURSDAY IS THE FIRST TIME I COULDN?T STOP IN 26000 MILES. BACK WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD 15000 MILES ON IT THE SAME THING OCCURRED. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE TO WORK THIS MORNING AFTER PICKING IT UP FROM THE GMC DEALERSHIP THAT SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS WAS AFTER MAKING SEVERAL STOPS ON HWY 280 IN BIRMINGHAM, AL. THIS TIME I RAN THE RED LIGHT WITH NO CONSEQUENCES BUT MY LUCK WILL NOT CONTINUE. *TR

TRUCK IS LEAKING OIL, AND I HAVE A SMALL PUDDLE OH GARAGE FLOOR. BROUGHT TO ORIGINAL SELLING DEALER TO BE CHECKED. THEY CLAIMED THERE WAS A PLUG ON BACK OF ENGINE THAT WAS LEAKING. THEY HAD VEHICLE FOR 3 1/2 DAYS, AND CLAIMED IT WAS FIXED. THEY HAD OVER 1 PAGE OF SEALS, GASKETS, PLUG WERE REPLACED. DROVE APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES, AND IT STARTED LEAKING EXACTLY THE SAME AS BEFORE. RETURNED TO DEALER AGAIN, AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN THAT IT WAS NORMAL TO SEE IT HAVING A LEAK DUE TO THE SILICONE THAT WAS USED ON ENGINE PARTS WHEN IT WAS BUILT !!! I WAS ADVISED TO DRIVE IT FOR 1 WEEK AND BRING IT BACK AGAIN. AT THAT POINT IN TIME, I CONTACTED GM AND WAS TOLD TO GET A SECOND OPINION AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. I BROUGHT IT TO THEM ON 11/15/13. IT HAS BEEN THERE NOW FOR 6 DAYS. I WAS JUST TOLD THAT THEY HAVE 4 PAGES OF NEW PARTS THAT HAVE TO BE ORDERED TO REPAIR IT. THEY (DEALERSHIP) REQUESTED THAT GM REPLACE THE ENGINE AND WAS DENIED. CONSIDERING THIS IS THE 3RD TIME TRYING TO REPAIR THE SAME PROBLEM, THEY SHOULD EITHER RE-PURCHASE OR LEMON LAW THIS. *TR

THE HEAD RESTS OF OUR NEW TRUCK (PURCHASED DEC 2012) PROJECT SO FAR FORWARD THAT IT FORCES MY HEAD TO TILT DOWNWARD. THERE IS NO FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT TO THE HEAD REST, AND TURNING THE HEAD REST BACKWARDS TO MAKE IT BEARABLE MEANS IT NO LONGER WILL SERVE WELL TO PREVENT NECK INJURIES IN A CRASH. FOR SHORTER DRIVES, THE FORCED HEAD TILT IS UNCOMFORTABLE, BUT FOR LONGER DRIVES IT CAUSES ENOUGH PAIN THAT I HAD TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR (AND I'M AN ATHLETIC, HEALTHY PERSON!). THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER CONTEND IT WORKS AS DESIGNED FOR SAFETY IN A CRASH. BUT IF I CAN'T SIT IN IT FOR NORMAL DRIVING WITHOUT EXPERIENCING NECK/BACK PAIN, HOW "SAFE" IS THAT? I NOTICED THE NEW 2014 GMC 1/2-TON PICKUPS HAVE A HEAD REST WITH A NOTICEABLY LESS ANGULAR DESIGN, INDICATING GMC RECOGNIZED THE HEAD REST DESIGN IN MY 2013 3/4-TON TRUCK IS, AT BEST, A POOR ONE AND, AT WORST, A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ONE. IS THERE ANY RECOURSE TO GETTING GMC TO REPLACE MY HEAD RESTS WITH THE NEW DESIGN (OR EVEN AN OLDER ONE, LIKE THE STRAIGHT-UP-AND-DOWN ONES I HAVE IN MY 2003 CHEVY TAHOE)? *TR
