2017 Ram 2500
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 245 complaints across the 8 model-year 2017 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2013–2018 · 6.7L Cummins diesel, 6.4L and 5.7L Hemi V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
In 2013, Ram added diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to the 6.7L Cummins diesel, and in 2014 the 6.4L Hemi gas V8 joined the 5.7L Hemi. 2014 Ram 2500s also switched to coil springs in the rear.
We counted 5,984 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2013–2018 Ram 2500s and 3500s: 4,409 from diesel trucks, 1,154 from 6.4L Hemi trucks and 246 from 5.7L Hemi trucks (identified by VIN). Most of them are from 2017–2018 trucks, driven by the brake issue below. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Anti-lock brake (ABS) unit failures on 2017–2018 trucks are the most reported problem by far, and were recalled.
- The 6.7L Cummins in these years is generally well regarded. DEF heaters, NOx sensors and EGR coolers are the commonly reported repairs.
- Steering recalls cover the drag link and track bar brackets.
- A water pump recall on 2013–2017 diesels addresses a fire risk.
2017–2018: ABS and stability control failures
Brakes come up in 1,560 diesel and 505 6.4L Hemi complaints, mostly from 2017–2018 trucks. Owners describe ABS, traction control and "service electronic brake system" warning lights. Chrysler recalled these trucks because the ABS hydraulic control unit may fail, disabling anti-lock brakes and stability control (recall 24V896000). Many complaints say replacement parts took a long time to arrive.
When buying: confirm this recall is done. Any ABS or stability control warning light on the dash is a reason to walk away or get it fixed first.
Steering and front end
- The drag link can separate if a jam nut loosens on 2013–2018 trucks (recall 19V021000).
- Track bar frame bracket welds on some 2015 trucks (recall 16V559000).
- Front-end shake is reported far less than on older Rams, but still check the track bar, tie rods and ball joints.
6.7L Cummins
Generally considered a strong engine in these years. Commonly reported repairs:
- DEF heater failures that cause reduced power, especially in cold weather, and NOx and DEF quality sensors
- EGR cooler leaks (white smoke or coolant loss)
- Turbo actuator failures at higher mileage
- A water pump recall on 2013–2017 trucks with a certain brand of pump that can leak coolant (recall 17V562000)
6.4L Hemi
Owners on Ram forums discuss camshaft and lifter failures on the 6.4L, often announced by a ticking noise. A tick can also come from broken exhaust manifold bolts, which is a much cheaper fix. Have a mechanic diagnose any tick before buying.
Other recalls
Side curtain airbag inflators on 2016–2018 trucks (recalls 25V010000 and 25V592000), power tailgate latches, and a rear camera recall on 2018 trucks.

I own a 2017 Ram 2500 that is subject to an active safety recall involving the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), Recall C4B / NHTSA Recall 24V-896. My vehicle is currently experiencing problems consistent with the safety defect described in the recall. The ABS warning light is illuminated, traction control is not functioning, cruise control is not functioning, and four-wheel drive is not functioning. I contacted an authorized Ram dealer regarding the active recall and was informed that there is currently no remedy available for my vehicle. This is extremely concerning because this is no longer simply an open recall on a vehicle that is otherwise operating normally. My truck is actively experiencing a failure involving its ABS and traction/stability-control systems, yet the manufacturer is unable to provide the recall repair. After being told there was no remedy available, I attempted to trade the truck in because I need a dependable and safe vehicle. However, I was offered substantially less than the amount I still owe on the truck. I currently owe just under $19,000. This would leave me with a significant financial loss and negative equity while trying to get out of a vehicle affected by an unresolved manufacturer safety recall. I do not believe I should be forced to absorb this financial loss simply because the manufacturer currently cannot provide a remedy for an active safety recall while my vehicle is exhibiting the associated safety problems. My preferred resolution would be for the manufacturer to pay off the remaining loan balance of approximately $19,000 so that I can surrender/trade the affected vehicle and purchase a newer used vehicle. I am willing to purchase another vehicle; I am not simply seeking financial compensation. I need a safe and dependable vehicle and a reasonable way out of this situation without being left responsible for thousands of dollars in negative equity caused or worsened by an unresolved safety recall.

The HCU is failing. it is a current recall and has been apparently before i even purchased my truck. The abs light is coming on and off. I use this truck everyday but most importantly i use it to transport my kids in what i assumed was a safe vehicle. I spoke with the dealer AND a representative in the recall department for FCA and both told me that there is no remedy and there may never be on. this is 100% UNACCEPTABLE. I dont understand why theres no RUSH to fix an issue that can cause an injury. I have text messages from the dealer service advisor

Recall C4B The Antilock Braking System in a constant On-Off state of failure. I've been told by multiple dealers and Ram Customer Service folks that there are no parts available. I have also been told that they will be available next quarters and that was multiple quarters ago. This has been going on since December 2024. I'm not sure if the braking system will function as designed if put in an emergency situation at this point. I also am unable to use my cruise control, because every time it goes into a failure mode, it kicks off the cruise control. I'm not talking about alarming once in a while, it's constantly every few seconds sometimes. I just want my truck fixed, this is ridiculous.

This problem was finally acknowledged by Chrysler in November 2024 but so far there is no repair offered by Ram. That, to me, is an unacceptable situation. The defect was generally know on my 2019 Ram 2500 several years before finally be acknowledged by them. And now after finally acknowledging the obvious they are still not offering a fix. As a practical matter, the actual defect is in the brush holders used in the small DC powered motor attached to the anti-lock control module. Replacement of the motor takes less than an hour but Chrysler is not even offering a suitable redesigned motor. I am not sure which is worse: Ram's refusal to offer a simple motor replacement or the lack of enforcement of a simple fix by NHTSA. I wore out a set of rear tires in under 3000 miles of use because of this problem.

It failed again 12/2024 but before it could be replaced a recal for the HCU came out with the warning "The loss of ABS/ESC/Traction control may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning" Now the warning light keeps coming on and going off with the alarm sound as I drive. It also turns off the cruise control. This has been going on for well over a year with no date for a fix of something that can cause a crash without prior warning. There doesnt seem to be any urgency to fix something that can cause such a big problem. I have no choice other than to keep driving my truck hoping for the best. This has routinely been happening since early 2025, with the only local dealer advise is to rapidly depress the gas pedal with the key on (engine off). There’s been zero advancement to provide remedy to date. When I ask the dealer, he says “we haven’t been notified yet of parts being available. You’ll be notified when we get to okay. This is in reference to safety recall 24V-896.

This is in regards to Recall #C4B for the ABS/HCU failure on my 2017 RAM. This recall was issued over a year ago in November of 2024, but Stellantis has yet to DO ANYTHING and can't even tell us when a remedy will be available. I have asked my local dealership and get the same answer, NOTHING!!! The parts must be available, because the dealership told me that I could purchase the part from them and pay them to install it. But, I would have to then wait to get reimbursed from Stellantis once the recall is "remedied". Two problems with this; 1) I don't have the $1500+ to spend on this, and 2) I don't trust them to ever pay me back! But, this does tell me that they have the parts. Plus, they have no trouble making and selling new vehicles with parts that don't have this safety failure. Can you make them prioritize this recall and take car of the thousands of RAM trucks with this safety issue. BTW, last month my brother-in-law was driving my truck on I-25 through Denver, CO. He hit an icy spot and lost traction causing him to go into a 360 spin. God was looking over him because he did hit anything or anyone. THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD HAVE BEEN WORKING. STELLANTIS CAME VERY CLOSE TO BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS DEATH!!!

The recall C4B/NHTSB 24v-893 came out in January of 2025. The parts are still not available for this recall (per Chrysler/RAM). I have been driving my truck with a possible non-working ABS system for a year and a half, often pulling a 10,000 lb trailer. I feel that this is ridiculous that the part is still not available. If I had a wreck during this time, I guarantee that I would sue the crap out of Chrysler.

Vehicle: 2017 Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel NHTSA Recall Number: 24V-896 Manufacturer Recall Number: C4B My vehicle is subject to Recall 24V-896 involving a Brake Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) that may fail and cause intermittent loss of ABS, Electronic Stability Control, and Traction Control. Beginning around September 2025, my vehicle started experiencing intermittent ABS and Electronic Braking System warning lights while driving. The warnings occur randomly during vehicle operation and not only at startup. I have contacted and visited my Ram dealership multiple times regarding both the recall and the active warning lights. The dealership advised that recall parts were not available and did not perform a diagnosis of the warning lights. I was informed that the recall remedy was unavailable and was not provided a determination regarding whether the vehicle was safe to operate. Because the dealership would not diagnose the active warning condition, I paid for an independent inspection. On March 5, 2026, an independent repair facility diagnosed Diagnostic Trouble Code C0020-01 (ABS Pump Motor Control Failure). Their inspection notes state that they flow-tested the ABS system and determined that the ABS module was faulty. The symptoms currently being experienced by my vehicle appear consistent with the failure mode described in Recall 24V-896, which states that a failing HCU may initially result in intermittent loss of ABS and traction control before progressing to permanent loss. As of June 2026, the recall remains incomplete and the remedy is still unavailable. I am concerned that the vehicle is exhibiting symptoms consistent with the recalled defect while no repair is available. I am requesting NHTSA review the delay in providing a remedy and the safety implications of vehicles experiencing active symptoms associated with this recall while parts remain unavailable.

This CHEAP fix is abhorrent! It calls for welding an adjustable part of the steering linkage rendering it non- adjustable when having the front end aligned in the future. Not to mention the effect of welding, potentially causing a problem with the integrity of the metal. The correct fix for this SAFETY issue is to REPLACE this steering linkage component, the entire Drag Link! NOT do a "back yard, shade tree mechanic" weld job on the steering linkage of all things! I am appalled that NHTSA approved such a thing. PLEASE revisit this issue and do the right thing. Require Chrysler (FCA US LLC) to REPLACE this defective part with the proper part. Note.... Chrysler is not welding the nuts on the drag links on trucks coming off the assembly line! They are coming off with proper, safe, adjustable drag links! I contacted FCA and they said they cannot redo the recall because it's out of the window to get it repaired again. This is not a safe fix. The recall says after this welding, the vehicle can still get a proper alignment from dealer, which is not true. I contacted the dealer and they said I should contact FCA, but that sent me back to my original issue. I can't get an alignment even though the recall fix says I can. I dealer refuses to do it. I bought this truck used from the dealer and they wouldn't fix it at the time either. I pull a fifth wheel trailer with my truck and I need an alignment. This recall weld fix is just not right, a cheap fix for a long-term problem and very unsafe. Please help and please point me in the right direction. Thank you

I am writing to formally demand that Stellantis replace the drag link assembly on my 2017 Ram 2500 at no cost to me. The welding performed during Safety Recall V06 in 2019 has rendered my vehicle unable to receive proper wheel alignment, creating an ongoing safety issue and causing premature tire wear. Background In 2019, my vehicle was brought to dealer to have Safety Recall V06 performed. The recall procedure involved welding the jam nuts to the adjuster sleeve on the drag link. I was not informed at the time that this welding would permanently prevent future alignment adjustments to the drag link. Approximately three months ago, I purchased new tires for my vehicle. When I took my truck to have a wheel alignment performed, I was informed that the alignment cannot be completed because the drag link jam nuts are welded and cannot be adjusted. The alignment is significantly out of specification, causing uneven tire wear and compromised vehicle handling. Current Situation I contacted Hendricks Ram in Cary NC regarding this issue. The dealership has confirmed that: 1.My vehicle cannot be properly aligned due to the welded drag link 2.Ram/Stellantis is refusing to break the welds and replace with the new adjustable drag link kit 3.I am being asked to pay approximately $2,000 out of pocket to correct a problem that was directly caused by Stellantis's recall repair Legal and Regulatory Basis for This Demand October 2023 TSB Update: Stellantis issued revised Technical Service Bulletin instructions for Recall V06 in October 2023 (RCRIT-19V021-0837). This TSB provides that vehicles should be inspected and, depending on conditions found, either have the nuts permanently welded OR the drag link replaced. My vehicle's alignment is out of specification and cannot be corrected—this clearly qualifies for drag link replacement under the revised procedures.

1. Failure to Address a Safety Recall Promptly When scheduling the appointment, I informed the dealership of an open safety recall (Recall V06, NHTSA 19V-021) involving the steering linkage jam nut (a defect which can cause loss of steering control). This recall is critical for safety, yet I was told on the phone that the dealership “could not work on it yet” due to unspecified changes being made by the manufacturer. Upon arrival, I asked again about this recall. The service advisor stated it would require a separate appointment with a “special mechanic” and thus declined to even inspect the vehicle that day. This is extremely disheartening – a known safety defect (announced in January 2019) remains unaddressed on my truck almost seven years later, and the dealership made no effort to expedite or even evaluate the need for repair. As a loyal Dodge customer, I am very concerned that an authorized dealer would postpone a safety recall inspection, leaving me driving a potentially unsafe vehicle. Safety recalls should be handled with urgency, and I urge Dodge to ensure that this recall (V06) is rectified on my truck immediately. It is unacceptable that I must continue driving with a defect that “can result in a loss of steering control… causing a crash without warning,” according to the recall description I found on your site.

The contact was then informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair, and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where a diagnostic test indicated a failure with the hydraulic control unit (HCU). Several repairs were performed, but failed to correct the failure. The mechanic replaced the transmission twice; however, the failure returned after each repair. The manufacturer was notified about the failure, and the contact was provided with two case numbers. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the independent mechanic. My 2017 Ram 2500, 6.4L Hemi experiences warning lights which I'm told is caused by intermittent PCM failure. I'm told this can cause the truck to stall while in motion, refuse to start, or enter "limp mode". This amounts to a possible unsafe condition that can put myself and passengers at risk of property damage, bodily injury or worse. I brought the truck to Priority Automotive of Westerly, LLC on March 9, 2026 for diagnosis. Their diagnosis (attached) recommended replacing the PCM to correct (possibly), "...intermittent internal short(s)". Cost of the repair is $2,012.42. Subsequently, I contacted customer care at Stellantis (866-726-4636) and was given Case #[XXX]. I was told to make an appointment at the aforementioned dealership and call them the day before the appointment, so they could send a representative to the dealership for examination. I did exactly that to no avail. No one from Stellantis even contacted the dealership on the appointment date. I called them to find out what happened, only to find out (from a supervisor) that they are not offering assistance in the matter. Additionally, the truck is currently under recall #C4B/NHTSA 24V-896 (PCM related) and, to-date, I'm told the part is still not available after more than a year since the recall. I've owned Dodge Rams for over 27 years and find the situation unsafe and totally unacceptable. In the beginning the light/alarm/message was not happening too often. Now it is so often that I can barely stand to drive it anywhere. Last week I drove to the store and back home which is about 15 miles. I counted over 100 events in that span. I understand there is a current safety recall that was issued back in November 2024. In the details of this recall they say the issue could cause collision. If so, why is this taking so long to be resolved? I have contacted the dealer several times and they are well aware of the issue but say there is not a remedy yet. However, they offered to replace the HCU with the same one but I pay for it and I will likely end up with the same problem down the road. That just seems absurd to me.

Recall for the drag link on this series of 2500 trucks calls for welding an adjustable part of the steering linkage - the drag link jam nuts, rendering that part non-adjustable. Once welded, to then perform an alignment the welds would need to be carefully ground off, alignment work performed, and then once again everything re-torqued and welded back in place per the recall advisory steps. Also consider the effects of welding, grinding, and welding again and again over the life of this HD truck. An alignment is critical to towing thousands of pounds, pulling to the side and overcorrecting while towing a load because a simple alignment is no longer possible is arguably just as dangerous as the original issue attempted to be mitigated (loss of steering). The correct fix for this safety issue is to replace this drag link component, not render the truck unusable. A new drag link without this issue has been engineered and made available for sale, but my VIN says its not eligible for it as a covered recall repair. This is an OEM design failure with a short-sighted workaround that renders the vehicle useless over time; seems ridiculous for the customer to be financially responsible for this failure. Attached photo is of the welded, "recall completed", drag link on my now horribly misaligned truck.

The Hydraulic Control Unit and the Anti-lock brake module on my 2017 Ram 2500 Diesel truck is going out. It has 84,000 miles on this truck. This is very costly to repair and Ram knows it is a problem! It is also very dangerous for the brakes to be an issue on any vehicle, but especially on one that has a heavy front end as diesel trucks do. The braking system must be reliable to stop the truck itself. This truck was built and designed to pull trailers and as a work truck. It is very dangerous to consider that these 2 components are not working when pulling a loaded trailer which depends on the braking system as well to stop the vehicle. I am also enclosing several websites to show you that Ram knows there is a problem but hasn't issued a recall on the problem. One of these sites is a Ram forum that shows many people are dealing with this issue. https://www.ramforumz.com/threads/abs-hcu-replacement.276340/ https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/forums/3rd-generation-ram-non-drivetrain-all-years-101/abs-cab-hcu-replacement-218820/ Thank you for your time! My truck will lose all throttle response and brakes harder to stop accompanied by a service electronic brake system, service electronic throttle control, and electronic traction control warning. The check engine light came on and I took the vehicle to the Ram service center. The tech said the turbo actuator caused the light to go on. He reset the computer and said to bring the vehicle back if it comes on again. About 1 month later it reappeared. The Ram service said the turbo charger actuator needed replacing (the complete turbocharger). They said the failure could result in a total loss of power or engine failure. I tow a 10,000 lb trailer and an engine failure on the road could result in an accident or injury due to no power from the engine. The part can be viewed for inspection.

Grid Heater bolt failure. Grid heater bolt is secured by a nut below intake area. The nut on bolt melts and causes pieces and shards into cylinder #6 if not fixed immediately. This is a terrible design and expensive fix. I am 3rd person to have this problem recently amongst my friends. Metal in side motors should not be melting and or rotting into cylinders. Please see attached pictures showing melted bolt and shards in the intake area. If this is a part that needs maintenance it should be listed in the scheduled maintenance somewhere

This is preventative for myself but multiple others have been affected by this manufacturing issue. The factory grid heater has a bolt and stud on the bottom side of it. From heat and deterioration the bolt has a tendency to fall off, which then sends it through the intake manifold where it winds up inside cylinder #6. My airbags failed to deploy. The cab on my truck was shifted more than 2 inches off the frame and was a total loss since the original repair estimate was more than $43,000. The reporting firemen and paramedics and the repair shop all could not believe that the air bags did not deploy. My passenger and I are still suffering from injuries sustained in the accident, which are likely much worse because of the failure of the airbags to deploy.

While traveling westbound on I-64 at highway speed (~65 MPH), I experienced a complete tire failure of the driver's side front fire. It was first experienced as severe front-end vibration that made control of the vehicle difficult; there were no warnings or other indications of imminent failure. Fortunately, I was able to get the vehicle to the roadway's shoulder without injury or accident. Upon exiting the vehicle, I noticed that the left front tire was flat, and a portion of the tire's tread was protruding above the surface of the tire. Because of vehicle's location/proximity to the interstate, both vehicle occupants were at risk of serious injury if a crash were to occur; the vehicle was also a hazard to passing traffic. Minimizing some risks, we were assisted on scene by the Virginia State Police as well as a VDOT Motorist Assist vehicle until the vehicle was able to be towed away. Tire information: COOPER Discoverer AT3 285/60/20 purchased on 10 July 2021 Mileage at time of installation 56,707, mileage at time of failure 78,622 total miles on tire: 21,915 Tire is available for inspection

My truck is a 2017 Ram 2500 and is experiencing the same issues as those included in NHTSA Recall No. 24V-896. However my truck was produced before the April 1, 2017 range listed. I have replaced the HCU as recommended by the dealer on [XXX] at my own cost and this did not resolve the issue. The dealer says the control module is faulty, but Chrysler will not provide the part as they say the HCU I purchased is in the Faulty range also but they say that even though the part I purchased to correct the issue is under recall, my truck is not and they have not responded to my request to correct the issue. This is a safety concern as it affects ABS, TSC, Parking Assist sensors and most importantly prevents the vehicles 4WD system from engaging which is an extreme safety concern in the mountains of North Carolina in winter. I have been trying to fix the problem at my own cost for a year and a half and the gross negligence on the part of Chrysler and Stellantis will not even allow me to purchase the needed parts. I am seriously considering legal action due to this total disregard for the safety and lives of their customers.
