Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 62 complaints across the 8 model-year 2010 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

What owners should know

Covers 2010–2012 · 6.7L Cummins diesel and 5.7L Hemi V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The first heavy-duty trucks sold under the Ram brand. Engines are the 6.7L Cummins diesel and the 5.7L Hemi gas V8. Diesels in these years use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR but no diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which arrived in 2013.

We counted 758 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2010–2012 Ram 2500s and 3500s: 510 from diesel trucks and 166 from Hemi trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Steering parts are the most frequently reported problem, and the left tie rod was recalled.
  • Diesel emissions parts (DPF, EGR, turbo actuator) are the most commonly reported engine repairs.
  • Diesel fuel heater wiring was recalled for a fire risk.
  • Hemi trucks: ticking from exhaust manifold bolts or lifters.

Steering and front end

Steering parts come up in 116 complaints (about 1 in 6). Chrysler recalled these trucks because the left tie rod assembly may break (recall 13V529000), along with an earlier steering linkage recall on 2010–2011 trucks (11V350000). Front-end shake is reported less often than on the 2003–2009 trucks, but still check for it.

When buying: confirm the tie rod recalls are done, check the steering linkage and track bar for play, and hit bumps at highway speed.

6.7L Cummins

Without DEF, these engines run richer to control emissions, which creates more soot. Repair sources commonly report:

  • DPF clogging and frequent "regeneration" (exhaust cleaning) cycles, which are worse with short trips and idling
  • EGR valve and cooler problems
  • Turbo actuator failures, often after 100,000 miles, with codes for boost control

Chrysler recalled 2010–2014 diesels because the diesel fuel heater's electrical connectors may overheat and leak fuel, a fire risk (recall 14V635000).

Many of these trucks have had their emissions systems removed ("deleted"). That can cause inspection and legal problems depending on where you live.

5.7L Hemi

Owners commonly report a ticking noise. It can come from broken exhaust manifold bolts (a cheaper fix) or from lifter or camshaft wear (expensive). Have a mechanic diagnose any tick.

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 2010 Ram 2500. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • Left tie rod can break

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: Loose or wandering steering, clunks, or play in the steering linkage.

Fix: Covered by Chrysler recalls. Many owners also upgrade to a heavy-duty tie rod and drag link.

May be covered free by recall 13V529000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 6.7L Cummins turbo actuator failure

    Moderate DIY

Signs: Low power, boost control codes such as P00AF.

Fix: Replace or recalibrate the turbo actuator. Cleaning soot from the turbo vanes sometimes helps.

  • 6.7L Cummins EGR and DPF problems

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Frequent exhaust cleaning cycles, EGR codes, low power.

Fix: Clean or replace the EGR valve, and have the DPF cleaned or replaced. Highway driving helps the DPF clean itself.

  • Diesel fuel heater fire risk

    Dealer (recall)

    Signs: Often no warning.

Fix: Covered by a Chrysler recall for the fuel heater's electrical connectors.

May be covered free by recall 14V635000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 5.7L Hemi exhaust ticking

    Hard DIY

Signs: Ticking that's loudest on a cold start and fades as the engine warms up.

Fix: Usually broken exhaust manifold bolts. Replace the bolts and gasket. A tick that stays when warm can be a lifter, which needs a shop.

    Dec 2017 · #17V821000

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

    Risk and fix

Risk: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, inspect the BTSI, and, as necessary, replace it, free of charge. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T79.

  • Engine And Engine Cooling:Engine:Diesel

    Oct 2014 · #14V635000

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks manufactured March 27, 2009, to September 5, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the electrical connectors of the diesel fuel heater may overheat.

    Risk and fix

Risk: If the connectors overheat, the fuel heater may leak fuel, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the harness side connector with a silver plated beryllium copper terminal service kit, and inspect the fuel heater for leaks, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. Chrysler issued interim notification to owners on December 8, 2014. The recall began on April 27, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P65.

    Nov 2013 · #13V529000

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 RAM 2500 4X4 and 3500 4X4 trucks, 2008-2012 Dodge RAM 3500 4x2 Cab Chassis, and model year 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 Mega Cab 4x4. The left tie rod assembly may break.

    Risk and fix

Risk: A failure of the tie rod assembly may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Chrysler notified owners on January 16, 2014 that dealers would inspect vehicles and replace the steering linkage assembly, if necessary. On or about February 27, 2014, Chrysler ceased its recall remedy program due to parts quality concerns, and then re-initiated it on or about April 14, 2014. In July 2015, and under a consent order with NHTSA, the company agreed to offer owners three options for remedying their vehicles: perform the original remedy, offer to repurchase the vehicle at the fair market value plus 10%, or offer an additional incentive offer towards the purchase of a new Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, or Fiat vehicle. Chrysler will notify owners of the new recall options in a letter expected to be mailed on August 31, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N49.

THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT BASED ON A SPECIFIC OCCURRENCE. I AM A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER WHO OPERATES A VARIETY OF PASSENGER VANS AND BUSSES BETWEEN VARIOUS CITIES. IN RECENT YEARS IT HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY MORE DIFFICULT TO DRIVE DURING NON-DAYLIGHT HOURS DO TO THE TYPE OF HEADLIGHTS THAT ARE NOW ALLOWED ON PASSENGER AND TRUCK VEHICLES. THE INTENSITY AND BRIGHTNESS LEVEL OF HEADLIGHTS HAS INCREASED TO A POINT WHERE THE GLARE AND BLINDING EFFECT OF ONCOMING HEADLIGHTS HAS BECOME A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY FACTOR, ESPECIALLY ON TWO LANE HIGHWAYS. FURTHERMORE, MANY VEHICLES ARE NOW EQUIPPED WITH A FOUR HEADLIGHT SYSTEM AS THEIR REGULAR NIGHT TIME RUNNING LIGHTS. THE OPTIONAL "FOG LIGHTS" FOR SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS IS NOW STANDARD LIGHTING PROTOCOL. THE OTHER OPTION ON THESE VEHICLES IS THEIR "BRIGHT" OPTION WHICH CREATES AN EVEN MORE HAZARDOUS SITUATION FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC DUE TO THEIR BLINDING EFFECT. THIS "UPGRADED" HEADLIGHT, FOG LIGHT, AND BRIGHT LIGHT TREND NEEDS TO BE TONED BACK DOWN TO INTENSITY AND BRIGHTNESS LEVELS THAT EXISTED A FEW YEARS AGO AND ARE REASONABLE FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO ADJUST TO. IT IS A SIMPLE MATTER OF FACT THAT THESE HIGH LEVEL HEADLIGHT OPTIONS ARE THE CAUSE OF MORE UNNECESSARY ACCIDENTS AND CASUALTIES THAN EVER BEFORE. *TR

INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) CITY OF OTTAWA HAS FOUR (4) DODGE RAM 5500 UNITS, BOUGHT IN MARCH 2010 WITH VIN NUMBERS LISTED BELOW, ALL HAVE BEEN PLAGUED WITH STEERING PROBLEMS WHICH DRIFTS AT SPEEDS OVER 70 KMH AND IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL WHEN FACING CONSECUTIVE SMALL BUMPS - SO MUCH THAT IN MY TEST RIDE I WAS AFRAID I COULD END UP IN THE OPPOSITE LANE OF TRAFFIC AND CAUSE A HEAD-ON COLLISION. MY PERSONAL CONCERN IS THAT IF NEW OR INEXPERIENCED DRIVERS FACE SUCH STEERING, IT COULD CAUSE ACCIDENT, DAMAGE OR EVEN FATALITY IF IT GOES UNCHECKED. UNFORTUNATELY THE DEALERSHIPS (SOUTHBANK AND CAPITAL DODGE) SEEM TO HAVE VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ROOT CAUSE AND NO CAPACITY TO DO REAL ANALYSIS AND TESTING ON THESE UNITS. CHRYSLER CORPORATE HAS BEEN CONTACTED VIA 1-800 PHONE CALLS AND FLEET EMAILS AND FILES WERE OPENED ON ALL OUR UNITS BUT THAT HAS BEEN THE EXTENT OF THEIR COOPERATION, AND EVEN THE LOCAL SERVICE MANAGERS HAVE NOT HEARD FROM CHRYSLER'S ENGINEERING OR THE DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER WHO USUALLY TENDS TO SUCH CALLS.
