Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 412 complaints across the 6 model-year 2018 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road, and a complaint count isn't a reliability score.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

How does the price compare?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see how the price compares.

This only compares the two numbers you enter: more than 5% over the value is above it, within 5% is near it, 5–15% under is below it, and more than 15% under is significantly below it. Price alone can't tell you a truck's condition or whether it's a good buy. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book.

Transmission would go from 7th gear to 1st gear causing stalling in busy traffic. Also the truck would be stuck at 7th gear when coming to a stop light and when the light turned green would not shift down to one which caused a power loss. This is a known problem with ford transmission, the dealership diagnosed the issue as a hydraulic circuit leak, which is caused by the cdf cylinder sleeve. This can be found in Ford TSB 25-2126

I own a 2018 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10R80 automatic transmission. The vehicle currently has approximately 70,000 miles. The transmission has developed intermittent harsh shifting and, more concerningly, has repeatedly appeared to slip or disengage from gear while the vehicle is moving. On multiple occasions while driving at highway speeds, pressing the accelerator did not result in acceleration because the transmission was no longer effectively transferring power to the wheels. This caused a temporary loss of motive power while traveling in traffic. The transmission subsequently re-engaged. The vehicle has also stored diagnostic trouble code P0734, indicating an incorrect 4th-gear ratio. The transmission fluid has been serviced, the vehicle software is current, and an adaptive transmission relearn has been performed by a mechanic. The P0734 code and transmission symptoms returned after these measures. Ford has issued Technical Service Bulletin 25-2475 for 2017-2020 F-150 vehicles equipped with the 10R80 transmission. The bulletin includes P0734 and harsh or delayed transmission operation and identifies axial movement of the CDF clutch-cylinder sleeve causing hydraulic circuit leakage as a possible cause. I am reporting this because the unexpected loss of propulsion at highway speeds creates a safety concern, particularly when merging, changing lanes, or traveling in surrounding traffic.

2018 Ford F-150 Limited with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. At approximately 60,000 miles the engine began making a rattling noise from the front of the engine on cold start, lasting several seconds. Over the last three months the noise has become progressively worse and now occurs at every cold start and lasts longer. The check engine light is currently illuminated. The vehicle has not stalled or lost power. A Ford dealer (Wynne Ford, Hampton, VA) diagnosed the condition on September 24, 2026 at 104,661 miles as cam phaser failure, requiring replacement of the variable camshaft timing (VCT) units and associated timing components. This matches Ford's Technical Service Bulletin 23-2143, which covers 2017-2020 F-150 vehicles with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine built on or before November 30, 2019. Ford previously issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21B10 and warranty extension 21N03 for this same defect on March 2, 2021, but 21N03 expressly excluded the F-150 Limited trim, and both programs have since expired. The dealer additionally reported that it has submitted multiple other cam phaser repairs on 2017-2020 3.5L EcoBoost vehicles for manufacturer assistance in the past two months, including vehicles newer and with lower mileage than mine, and that all were denied. The quoted repair is $5,414.11 at my expense. I am filing this report because cam phaser failure in these engines can progress to timing chain damage and engine failure, and because Ford has documented this defect since at least 2021 without issuing a recall. I contacted Ford (case CXH-09424982) and was denied any financial assistance.

About 1 year ago the rear door on the drivers side locked and I have been unable to open it manually, with the interior unlock buttons or with the key fob. However, there have been 3 occasions during this passed year when the door inexplicably opens, twice when the truck is parked and once when I was driving down the freeway. To be clear, the door doesn’t just unlock, it opens. On those 3 three occasions, when I closed the door, it again locks and I’m unable to open it. I’ve taken the problem to 2 Ford dealerships. Both indicated they had never heard of this problem and there were no recalls related to the problem. One dealership diagnosed the issue, charging $100 and determined it was the door latch and offered to replace it ($472 for the latch and labor to be determined). I opted not to repair it thinking that the problem should be further diagnosed to determine if there are flaws in factory parts that create safety issues in this particular truck, make and model.

I explained my vehicle was working fine until the mandatory emissions recall was completed and that under the good will assistance I should be covered for Some compensation fixing this vehicle. My 2018 Ford F-150 experienced significant heat damage involving the fog lamp assembly. The fog lamp did not simply stop working. The assembly became hot enough that portions of the lamp/assembly melted and burned. I discovered the damage before it resulted in a larger vehicle fire, but I am concerned about the potential fire risk associated with this failure. The vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership, where the damaged fog lamp assembly was identified and replacement was recommended. I am reporting this because the amount of heat generated and the visible melting/burning appear to represent a potential vehicle safety and fire hazard. I have requested that the Ford dealership document the damage, photograph the affected components, and report the issue to Ford for review.

While driving my brakes went from normal, to squishy, to total loss of brakes. Brake indicator light came on while in the squishy phase. After avoid collision by nothing other than sure luck I was able to slow the vehicle and use the emergency brake to stop. Once stopped I popped the hood and found the master cylinder to be all but empty. I obtained brake fluid, filled the cylinder and the brakes appeared to be normal. After a very short drive I lost brake function again and the MC was empty. No leaks could be found from lines or around the wheels Truck was towed to an independent shop where the diagnostic determined the master cylinder seal had failed and leaked brake fluid into the brake booster. I believe the Hitachi master cylinder failure is a known Ford defect. It has been recalled on the 3.5L model F150's but not the 2.7L and 5.0L models. My loss of brakes could have led to serious or fatal traffic incidence. The master cylinder is defective on all models of the years involving the recall of the 3.5L models. The recall should be extended before someone loses their life. Please look to extend the recall to include the other models of F150s.

These are the exact symptoms and component failures described in Ford Recall Campaign 25S37 (NHTSA Campaign 25V236). However, when checking my VIN, I am told my truck is excluded from the recall population. Because my vehicle is exhibiting the identical safety defect, the current recall window is too narrow and needs to be expanded to cover my vehicle before a serious collision occurs.

Issue has intermittently persisted since then with no resolution available from dealership. The acceleration issues causes the vehicle to slow down and halt before jerking into motion again. Additionally the engine eco boost is occasionally shutting the vehicle off in traffic, if the brake is released too quickly with the boost feature on the engine shuts off, you have to put it back in park and then start the engine again. I've almost been rear ended twice when a light turns green and my engine turns off unexpectedly.

My vehicle (2018 Ford F150) is presenting with the same issues the 2021- 2023 ford an Lincoln models regarding the fuel system with my truck sputtering in 7th and 8th gears and stalling. It has stalled a few times in the past few months. The spark plugs have been changed, purple fuel styrene cleaner has been used regularly, filters changed, basically all trouble shooting has been done with no significant change. Maybe there are others who are experiencing the same out there. My vehicle is well maintained, in fact I just put upwards to $8k into it this year.

While driving to Sam’s Club (approximately 20 miles from home), my 2018 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost began running very rough, and the check engine light came on. I had the vehicle scanned, and diagnostics confirmed that the cam phasers are failing — the exact issue I had replaced under warranty at approximately 59,000 miles. The vehicle now has just 88,000 miles, and this failure occurred in under 30,000 miles since the original repair. I have maintained this truck with extreme care. I only use Motorcraft parts and fluids, change the oil every 3,000 miles or sooner, and always use premium fuel. This is not a maintenance issue. This is a design or part failure that Ford has not properly resolved. When the phasers were replaced the first time, I was told there was no warranty on the replacement parts. That is unacceptable. A known failure being replaced with an equally defective part is not a resolution. Ford is aware of this issue — there are multiple TSBs (including TSB 21-2130 and 19-2208) and widespread complaints across owner forums — but they have taken no responsibility. I paid over $44,000 for this truck and should not be facing the same critical engine failure twice before 90k miles. The rough performance and sudden malfunction while driving posed a potential safety risk. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can investigate and hold Ford accountable. This seems like a common problem with this engine, and I do not understand why there has not been a recall or why Ford has not been forced to implement a permanent fix.

In November of 2024, my truck was shaking, accelerating erratically, and felt like the transmission was slipping. The check engine light came on as well. I took it to the shop and after diagnosing that it was a misfire issue in cylinder 6, they replaced spark plugs, fuel injectors, and tried to switch out new coils. They found gasoline inside cylinder 6, and upon doing a compression test, it was well below 100%. The truck continued to have misfires in cylinder 6, ultimately leading to 0% compression in that cylinder after taking it back to the same authorship to diagnose. After researching online forums and technical bulletins, it’s clear this issue is not uncommon among 2.7L EcoBoost engines from this model year, suggesting a manufacturer defect. The cost to replace the engine (as now recommended) has been estimated at nearly $10,000. With the history of regular oil and maintenance by the previous owner and myself, I feel this is a manufacturing defect that could potentially cause harm to the driver and passengers.

Ford dealer diagnosed the problem as the A/C evaporator sensor failure and estimated the cost at $2800 to remove the entire dashboard and all components. No warning lights or other indicators appear. The A/C evaporator apparently freezes over and block air flow through the vents. This is a problem many of these vehicles are having. I have included the ford service bulletin. I own a 2018 Ford F-150 4WD with approximately 24,600 miles. While traveling approximately 70 MPH on the highway in 2H with cruise control operating, I suddenly heard an extremely loud metal-on-metal grinding/ratcheting noise from the driver's-side front wheel area. The noise caused immediate concern about a possible front wheel or drivetrain failure. I disengaged cruise control and the grinding stopped. Within approximately 50 miles on the same trip, the grinding occurred a second time while again traveling approximately 70 MPH in 2H without cruise engaged. Because of the severity of the noise, I pulled over on the side of the highway and inspected the vehicle. I found nothing visibly wrong and resumed driving. The condition has since occurred two additional times while accelerating from a stop in 2H. These incidents were less severe but involved the same metal-on-metal grinding/ratcheting from the driver's-side front wheel area. I have also noticed a brief air/vacuum-type "whoosh" immediately before the grinding occurs. My Ford service manager directed me to Ford TSB 24-2188, which addresses grinding/clicking/ratcheting from the front wheel area associated with partial engagement of the Integrated Wheel End (IWE). The truck is scheduled for diagnosis but has not yet been formally diagnosed. I contacted Ford Customer Satisfaction, case CXH-090-0329-26-V5R9-P-5. Ford declined assistance due to vehicle age despite the low mileage. I am reporting this because the condition has occurred four times, including twice unexpectedly at 70 MPH. I am concerned about the safety implications of a front wheel-end component potentially partially engaging at highway speed and believe this warrants NHTSA review.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the vehicle hydroplaned as the contact lost control of the vehicle. As the contact struggled to regain control of the vehicle, the rear of the vehicle crashed into the left of the highway retainer wall. As a result, the vehicle spun out across three lanes as the front end of the vehicle hit the right retainer wall. The air bags deployed upon impact; however, both the front driver and front passenger seat belts independently unclipped during the accident. The contact stated that once the vehicle came to a stop after hitting the second wall, both seat belts were unbuckled. Both vehicle occupants were taken to the hospital via an ambulance. The contact was treated for a concussion, pain in the left shoulder, and a torn LCL on the left knee. The passenger suffered a broken right hand, concussion, pain in the neck, and bruising on the torso. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed from the scene to an independent mechanic where it remained in their possession. Both the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure; the manufacturer gave the contact a case number. The manufacturer then referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

The contact's husband owned a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at 62 MPH, he hit the back of the semi-truck on the front driver which sent the vehicle to tailspin and caused her husband to hit the semi-truck for a second time. The second collision sent the vehicle into another tailspin before coming to a complete halt. A police report was filed. According to the police department investigation, the airbag inflator had deployed which struck her husband's forehead. The investigation also determined that her husband's injuries were not consistent with proper airbag deployment. The report also noticed that both the air bag and air bag inflator were found on the floor near the rear passenger side seat. In addition, the report showed bruising constant with the lower lap belt locking but the driver did not have any bruising/burns from the upper seatbelt. The contact was pronounced dead on the scene and was taken to a moratorium. The vehicle was taken to an independent tow yard and deemed a total loss by insurance. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 36,667.

I had a front end collision with my truck. The damage was a direct hit on the airbag sensor, and my airbags nor my seatbelts deployed. I was going about 45 to 50. The pre-collision warning appeared right before I hit the vehicle but no automatic braking. The body shop that has my vehicle had safety concerns because my vehicle took the brunt of the crash right on the airbag sensor. No airbags or anything deployed, but the sensor was broken in the accident. The concern is if the sensor was hit directly, why didn't it send a signal to through the system to deploy safety restraint systems. I called Ford to inform them of my concerns. After going through several people, I was finally given a case number CAS37213430 after days of trying to get them to take me seriously. They told me to take it to a Ford dealer to have it checked, but it is wrecked so how will they check it. My concern is that it didn't deploy the restraints because obviously wasn't working properly. I couldn't get all my pics to load so have more.

The driver and passenger seats continuously keep self adjusting without the memory seat option in my vehicle. When readjusting back to position I hear popping. I feel like it’s either an electrical problem or adjustment mechanism stripping out! I’ve talked to several people in different forums with the same issue and thought we was just losing our minds!

The engine system on this vehicle experienced multiple failures, including severe knocking, power loss, and potential oil-related malfunctions. Despite repeated service visits to the authorized Ford dealership, the problem persisted. The dealership performed multiple repairs, but the issue was never fully resolved. The vehicle has been undrivable for over a year, during which I have had to rely on rental cars, borrowed vehicles, and eventually purchased cash vehicles to commute — all while continuing to pay for the truck. This is a severe financial and safety burden for a vehicle sold as reliable. To this day, no clear resolution has been offered, and Ford’s internal support has repeatedly deflected responsibility or referred me to scripted call center processes. The vehicle remains parked, unable to be driven due to fear of catastrophic failure or causing harm to myself or others on the road. The engine should be fully inspected, and the failure reported as part of a broader pattern I believe exists across other vehicles with this powertrain. There were early warning lights, knocking, and oil issues documented during dealer visits. The dealer acknowledged repeated service cases but failed to offer a true fix or replacement. This is more than mechanical failure — it’s a consumer safety and engineering accountability issue. I urge NHTSA to investigate the root cause and assess whether a broader recall or investigation is warranted.

I was required to complete the recall 24E12 on my 2018 ford F 150 2.7L eco boost XLT. Upon completion the check engine light comes on. I looked into this and this is an ongoing problem with the emissions recall . I scanned for a code and P0430 is coming up. (Catalyst System). I contacted the dealership and ford corporate and they will not help assist in resolving this issue. I explained my vehicle was working fine until the mandatory emissions recall was completed and that under the good will assistance I should be covered for Some compensation fixing this vehicle. I think I had brake lights. I had to drive over 60 miles on I-10 and then to a Walmart. I was pulling an Airstrean trailer. After turning off the ignition and removing the key there was some illumination on the screen so I disconnected the battery to avoid being stranded. The next day when I stsrted the truck, all the instrumentation came back. As a result the Ford service department had no codes to read. Three weeks kater I lost cruise control for several days during the trip. When I got to a Ford service department the cruise control was working again. Twice before that the truck had dropped out of cruise control on it's own. No codes.

The bluetooth connection with my phone connects and disconnects constantly also. The usb ports directly beneath the radio frequently don't work either. Safety is effected because of increased time looking away from the road trying to answer calls or get directions through the navigation system.
