Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 633 complaints across the 6 model-year 2017 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road, and a complaint count isn't a reliability score.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

How does the price compare?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see how the price compares.

This only compares the two numbers you enter: more than 5% over the value is above it, within 5% is near it, 5–15% under is below it, and more than 15% under is significantly below it. Price alone can't tell you a truck's condition or whether it's a good buy. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book.

My Transmission will townshift suddenly on the Highway. The error code I get is the (P0720) output-speed-sensor. I have noticed it has been recalled before. It is very scary when I am driving, and I know it has to be hurting my engine and transmission. I got a recall notice and thought it was for this, but it was for other error codes similar to this. According to my research they all seem to very closely associated. I took it to the dealership, and they said ford won't cover my issue.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from 6th gear to 2nd gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the torque converter was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the recall repair appointment could not be scheduled because the manufacturer had placed a hold on the recall on September 28, 2026. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

2017 F-150 is dropping into limp mode due to code P0722 (OSS sensor), but Ford's safety recall 26S28 framework fails to replace the broken hardware for this specific code. Dealership performed PCM Update recall campaign 26S28/26V237. Charged me for a diagnostic fee because P0722 is not covered in the customer satisfaction program campaign 26N04, Even though P0722 points to the same transmission molded leadframe failure. After the PCM update my truck will still drop into limp mode and can be dangerous if pulling onto highway and stuck in 3rd gear causing no power during taking off. It also will sometimes stay in 1st gear and I have to pull over and shut the truck off to get it to shift again.

Driving on interstate when my truck suddenly flashed a wrench light and downshifted to 5th gear. Truck went into limp mode limiting my gears to 3rd through 5th gear. Had vehicle towed to Ford Dealership. They wanted $399 just to do a diagnostic and scan for codes. My truck was showing code P0720 (Output Shaft Speed Sensor) at my house before being towed. This output shaft speed sensor is integrated into the internal molded lead frame, which is the part that was recalled for replacement on Safety Recall Notice 26S28/NHTSA Recall 26V237. However, Ford will not cover this under the lead frame recall. My guess would be because they know it’s a loophole and they can still make money off of repairs for the same part.

On XXX, my [XXX] son was driving this 2017 Ford F-150 when the transmission suddenly downshifted while traveling on the road. The downshift was severe enough that the rear tires lost traction and the vehicle fishtailed, nearly resulting in an accident. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Ford dealer on 8/18/2026. We reported the sudden downshift, but the dealer was unable to duplicate the condition. The dealer performed Ford Recall 26S28/NHTSA 26V-237 and campaign 19G01, and the vehicle was returned on XXX. On XXX, only two days after the recall repair, the engine unexpectedly shut off while the vehicle was being driven. It restarted afterward. On XXX, the engine again unexpectedly stalled while the vehicle was moving. When the engine stopped, power-steering assist was lost and the driver had to coast the vehicle safely to the side of the road. The engine restarted immediately. When attempting to drive away, the transmission appeared to be starting in approximately third gear rather than first gear. After the vehicle was moving, the transmission eventually began operating normally again. Ford Customer Relationship Center was notified on XXX and formally documented these incidents. The vehicle is available for inspection. I am concerned because the original sudden downshift closely resembles the safety defect addressed by Recall 26V-237/26S28, and serious intermittent stalling and abnormal transmission operation have continued after the recall remedy was performed. I am requesting that NHTSA document and evaluate these post-recall safety symptoms and whether the recall remedy adequately addresses the underlying defect. In late July 2026, my son received a Ford safety recall notice (Recall #26S28) for his 2017 F 150 requiring a PCM software update. I brought the truck to Crown Motors in Redding on August 11th for the recall service. Before this appointment, the truck had no performance issues. Immediately after picking up the truck, a noticeable pinging sound occurred under acceleration. I returned the vehicle on August 12th, where Crown Motors confirmed the issue and advised spark plug replacement. This did not resolve the problem. I was also told that continued driving could damage the engine, so the truck remained at the dealership. Over the following days, Crown Motors worked with Ford engineering and repeatedly attempted software-related fixes. Crown staff informed me they believed the recall update caused the issue, and the first internal Ford team reportedly agreed. However, on August 25th, Ford’s second internal review determined the software update was not responsible and stated that all repair costs would fall on me—despite the clear timeline showing the problem began immediately after the recall service. Customer Service provided no assistance and refused to escalate my concern. As a result, my truck is currently non-operational, Crown Motors does not have a fix, and Ford will not cover repairs triggered only after Ford’s own safety recall. According to NHTSA’s info, it seems Ford is obligated under Motor Vehicle Safety Act (49 U.S.C. § 30111 et seq.) to repair the vehicle. I am requesting that Ford acknowledge responsibility for the recall related issue and cover the necessary repairs. I am deeply concerned at the lack of support and accountability shown throughout this process from Ford. I am resubmitting this info, not sure if my first attempt worked. I had an issue with my internet browser.

I believe the Spark Knock issue is an additional safety issue caused by the PCM recall update that was I was told could cause engine failure.

Short in the rear window defroster. Within 5 minutes of turning off the defroster after only having it on for 2 minutes at 2:30am leaving work, the back window exploded outward and shattering. No rocks, no other folks on the road. Upon research, and after contacting insurance company and the glass repair company, this is a very common issue in 2015-2019 F-150s. But there are no safety recalls. Praise God my children were not in the backseat, they would have been riddled with glass. How is this not a safety issue?

Vehicle Safety Hazard & Recall Remedy Denial Recall: 26S28 / NHTSA Campaign 26V237 Summary of Issue: I am experiencing active, unsafe vehicle symptoms directly tied to Recall 26S28, including intermittent transmission signal loss, warning lights, and abrupt downshifts while driving. I initially contacted Ford in April/May 2026 immediately following the recall notice, but was informed no remedy or repair parts were available at that time, forcing me to operate a vehicle with a known driveability and safety hazard for three months. Now that the vehicle is at the dealership, Ford is refusing to perform the physical lead frame replacement under the recall/field action solely because the vehicle has not latched a permanent Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), despite the technician confirming physical hardware failure. Safety Impact & Systemic Failure: 1. Defect Root Cause: The lead frame degradation is the primary root physical defect of Recall 26S28, not secondary damage. 2. Unreasonable Safety Risk: Forcing drivers to operate vehicles experiencing active downshifting and loss of drive power until a specific DTC latches poses an immediate highway crash hazard. 3. Inadequate Remedy Program: Ford’s requirement for a specific stored DTC creates an unreasonable barrier to recall execution, denying necessary hardware repairs to vehicles experiencing the exact safety failure described in the recall. Ford must be held accountable for providing a functional physical remedy for vehicles exhibiting active recall symptoms, regardless of whether a transient electrical fault registered a permanent DTC code.

The vehicle experienced intermittent transmission-related drivability issues before the recall remedy was available. The vehicle had delayed/hard shifting, an intermittent wrench warning light, and a reduced power/limp mode condition where the transmission would not shift normally. The vehicle was inspected by an authorized Ford dealer on multiple occasions, including diagnostic visits on 10/09/2023, 05/12/2025, and 02/09/2026. Ford later issued recall 26S28 involving the powertrain control module/transmission control system, and the recall remedy was performed. After the recall repair was completed, the original drivability concern continued, including sluggish shifting and delayed engagement between gears. As a second attempted repair related to the wrench warning light and transmission concern, the dealer identified the possibility of a faulty transmission lead frame and reviewed replacement under the applicable coverage. However, the dealer refused to replace the lead frame because the related fault code was not currently present during their inspection. The intermittent nature of the failure causes the code to clear after the vehicle is restarted, making it difficult to capture during a dealer visit. I provided photographic proof showing the wrench warning light was present after picking up the vehicle on the same day the recall repair was supposedly completed. Despite this evidence and the continued symptoms, the lead frame replacement was not performed. The vehicle has not been involved in a crash, but the intermittent loss of normal transmission operation creates a safety concern, especially during acceleration, merging, or uphill driving. The issue has been reported to Ford and inspected by a Ford dealer. Repair documentation, photos, and service records are available.

I was driving on the PA turnpike and upon hitting a pothole or bump the mount on the frame that the lower control arm bolts onto broke off. I was going under the speed limit with two small children in the car and a piece of my frame broke off after a slight bump. Every mechanic and person I speak to at ford is saying it shouldn't have happened and they can't believe it. There was no warning and I drove onto the turnpike got almost all the way home before it randomly broke. I spoke with Ford and they are unwilling to help after running my VIN. They say unless I put a complaint in and you open a recall that they will not help me. This is a 2017 truck with minimal rust it should not be breaking off a simple bump on the highway. I had a 9 year old and a 10 month old in the car and the front left of my suspension broke away from the vehicle after routine driving. Something needs to be done about the situation ford should be more concerned they have a frame break on such a new vehicle. Thank you for your time.

while installing new shocks my mechanic saw that the frame is rusted to the point of being unsafe to drive, some of the connections of the truck bed and cab we so rusted they were disconnected. there were holes 1-2" in diameter in the main frame. took the truck to local dealer which inspected it ask said the frame needed to be changed, when I asked if the truck was safe to drive the service rep did not want to answer the question, only said "frame has to be changed" I left the truck there as I did not want to sign any release of liability as felt unsafe driving the truck. I am first owner, bought the truck brand new and always maintained it and took good care of it.

Safety recall 17S33 has been completed on my 2017 F150. The truck is not driven that much, and this year has been unusually cold. My door latches have been freezing again making it impossible to close the door. In some cases, you don't know until the door just flies open. Several times now I have had to drive down the road holding the door/doors closed until the latches decide to thaw enough to actuate. I contacted Ford and was told that the repair was only warrantied for 2 years. A quick search online and there is a multitude of owners still having this issue. This is unacceptable for a life-threatening Safety defect that the manufacture has known about and is too cheap to correct the problem permanently.

Have had the rear door locks stop working during the cold, it would not allow the doors to shut and stay shut. I did have children in car seats in the truck at the time. After trying to get the locks to work for about 10 minutes they stared working again. Also have an oil leak that was discovered while having an oil change. I became aware of Technical Service Bulletin: 23/2083, NHTSA ID Number: 10233594 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and related the failure to the TSB. Called the dealership and they said they couldn't do anything about it because there was no recall for it. My truck is included in the vehicles from the Kansas and Detroit plants that are affected by a defective oil pan. The manufacturer is refusing to issue a recall.

I live in a cold climate, WA State, and own a 2017 Ford F150 XLT. On several occasions, both the drivers front door and passenger front doors have opened while driving without activating the door handle. This only occurs when it is wet with rain or snow and below freezing outside. On several occasions, when wet and cold, the doors on this truck will not latch shut as the latching mechanism is freezing on the interior of the vehicle doors. This truck has already been into the Ford dealer and the door recall notice has been addressed and fixed per Corwin Ford. The problem has not been resolved and continues to this day in an extremely dangerous state. I was advised there was nothing else they could do to help the door suddenly and unexpectedly opening issue and that I should contact both Ford and NHTSA. This is a very dangerous situation as my son was driving home from the ski resort, the doors would not latch shut and a passenger nearly fell out of the vehicle. This is unacceptable and extremely disappointing. I feel this safety issue has not been handled by Ford Motor Company and I am very afraid to have my son drive this truck in this dangerous condition. Please contact me regarding this complaint as I can give further details on the issue and send videos of this issue occurring. When this occurs, there are no warning lamps present. Please see the attached repair invoice for the recall notice.

This lead frame issue is never ending. Well over a decade without a proper remedy. I’m very familiar with it. but this one nearly ended my life. After the near collision I called my mechanic and bought a new ford lead frame from a dealership. It’s doing fine now, it’s been 1 year. the incident caused my truck to go into park or possibly reverse at highway speed just as I passed a semi truck and returned to the right lane. If the trucker had not been paying attention it would have been bad. There was nothing I could do. . On top of this, he was under the impression that it was intentional. So I almost got into a physical altercation until I convinced him to look inside my truck as my gear indicator light was dancing from gear to gear while not touching anything.. To add to the seriousness, my taillamps never came on because I didn’t touch the brake. It was a horrible timing.. . Shortly after this i received a notice from Ford explaining the cause and symptoms of this issue, but then stated there was no fix at the time, but the vehicle was “safe to drive.” That is irresponsible. This was the only time mine did it, no prior issues. I got new ford parts and had it replaced. my mechanic said they deal with this weekly! Then I get a letter from Ford saying there is a fix and it’s a computer programming issue which is totally not true. That’s just a smoke screen, but it also goes on to say it could be a lead frame and if you’ve already fixed it before you got a letter, they will refund your money, but I highly doubt that. But they should stop claiming these vehicles are safe to drive because they absolutely are not if they’re having an issue regarding recall 26S28. So not only did i use new Ford parts, I paid a reputable EX Ford Technician Who owns his own business to perform the services because ford didn’t offer a fix. only to waste my time reprogramming the ecm. I work, I don’t have time. It’s irresponsible to say it’s not a safety concern. It’s just bad policy

This is a MAJOR issue with Ford F150s. I am not sure how this was never a recall. Ford issues a TSB for this but NOTHING is the TSB fixes the issue. There is a major fault in the IWE system that causes the 4x4 to engage randomly causing the truck to have major steering issues. It causes grinding, like metal on metal grinding, the steering wheel locks in place at times and I personally almost dies several times from this. The locking steering wheel caused me to crash into a ditch because I could not bring the steering wheel back to center. This has randomly happened to me several times while driving, The TSB claims the issue to be intermittent, which it is due to the fault in this IWE system. FOrd needs to literally cover and replace the entire IWE system before someone gets hurt. Please look this up, this is a very known issue that deserves to be a recall and not a TSB. Please help save lives.

While driving on the highway on several occasions, the transmission drops from 6th gear to a lower gear, either seeming to slip, or locking the wheels causing a bad jerk. i have an appointment in two days , but am concerned that there may be more damage to my vehicle that will show up later due to this issue. I had another dealership try to charge to to repair my truck. i am hopefull that the new dealership will do right by me.

Lug nuts swollen and unable to remove with provided equipment

    • Filed Dec 2024 · Also filed under Engine

My 2017 F150 is 7 years old with 80K mileage. Engine problem: Cold start ticking/tapping/rattle noise. Ford claimed it sent a letter in 2021 but I never received. Googled and found there are large amount of the same complaints on 2017-2020 F150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine. The Cam Phaser / VCT Units will fail. Vehicles may not restart after auto-start-stop. Ford issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03 and Technical Service Bulletin TSB23-2143. Those measures are not enough. Ford should recall all 2017-2020 F150 with 3.5L Ecoboost built before Nov 30, 2019. Lug nuts at wheels: Ford used cheap two-piece nuts. All the nuts were swollen in Dec 2024 and could not be removed by myself. I had to drive my F150 to Quick Lane and paid $140 to get all the nuts replaced with one-piece nuts. An employee of Quick Lane told me Ford used cheap two-piece nuts for long time, and it's a common issue on some Ford vehicles. Image if a tire is flat on highway while the nuts are swollen and the flat tire can not be changed! Ford should recall all vehicles using the cheap two-piece nuts. I still keep the old nuts as an evidence.

When I turn my windshield wipers on during rain, I can't turn them back off. They WILL NOT TURN BACK OFF. I have to pull off the road and turn the truck off and then restart the truck.. Sometimes this works and sometimes this doesn't work either. THIS IS A VERY ANNOYING PROBLEM. This can be a safety issue if I am trying to deal with this and get off the road to turn the truck off. I also own a 2019 F150 and now it has started doing the EXACT same issue. I don't feel this is a problem for the owner. I feel there is a defect in these two trucks. I feel there should be a recall on this issue. I have talked to the Ford dealership about this issue. There are no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The date this first started is around April 2025 but I don't know the exact date. THANK YOU VERY MUCH:

Was driving down the highway and there was a strong smell like something electrical was burning. I thought it was someone's brakes or clutch burning. About 3 minutes later I stopped and went into a store and when I came out my whole back window was shattered. In doing research online, I see this appears to have been a common problem with Ford F150's since 2010.

The windshield was not sealed properly. The primer and glue were applied incorrectly and now has disintegrated over time causing a leak in the area where the pin holds the windshield at the drivers side of the vehicle. From what I understand this could cause the windshield to dislodge in an accident.

The air conditioner/heater has intermittently. Sometimes that air will blow cold but then becomes warm and sometimes the defroster takes more time than usual to warm up. The AC fans will come on high and continuously run if the AC is on. This hasn't worked properly since I purchased this used truck with a warranty from a Ford dealership. I have had it to the dealership on 2 occasions and no codes existed and they could not replicate the issue. This issue affects the ability to defrost and/or defog the windshield. During driving when the windshield gets clogged up because of the weather conditions it becomes hazardous to my passengers and myself. Ford because there were no errors codes or lights and they could not reproduce the issue returned the vehicle unfixed. I have had the vehicle to 2 repair shops and both indicated this is a known issue by Ford and they have issued a Technical Service Bulletin #22-2089 on 9 March 2022 acknowledging this issue but has failed to correct this issue.

AIRBAG WARNING FAILURE A know issue with Ford F-150 and other products with the Blind Spot senor module in the rear tail lights. The vehicle has an issue with water or fluid leaking into the tail light housing causing many of the advanced features to stop working. The vehicle shows a Blind Spot Sensor Failure, Cross Traffic Sensor Failure, Front Windows will not operate, Air Conditioner stops working , Radio works but nothing can be changed and worst of all the "The Air Bag Failure Warning Light" comes on rendering the vehicle unsafe for roadway operations. The Internet (You Tube and other sites )document the failure and how to fix it. It is not confined to just My 2017 F-150 but plagues many other year and model ford products. My truck is currently at Bluebonnet Motors the Authorized and Sales Dealer for this Truck, they have confirmed the issue and are awaiting parts to repair it. They have quoted about $1,850 for parts and labor. [XXX] the service writer and myself witnessed these failures in the service reception area while checking the truck in for service. This problem puts many people at risk (including myself) if they are unaware of the entire system failures. Should a crash occur the occupants may not be provided with air bag deployment , which could result in possible injuries or death. I have not been made aware of Ford Motor Company or the dealership acknowledging this serious safety concern. On 07-15-2023 A girl rana stop sign and hit my truck quite hard on the Drivers side just in front of the door. It was so violent that my head, shoulder, arm, and left hand shattered the drivers window in each place they hit. Pictures show all 4 definitive places where each body part hit. I incurred a fracture on my left hand, shoulder, and head pain. I had to really force the drivers door open. It bent the front end around and I had to force the passenger door open. The side airbags didn't deploy. At the time of the accident all I felt was my hand and was slightly dizzy but didn't feel like I needed medical attention. The next day I knew I needed medical attention and went to the urgent care. I am now getting unusual headaches on the left and rear side of my head. I do not normally get headaches and am rarely ever sick. I have an appointment with my doctor to get checked out on Monday. I really feel that the side airbags should have deployed. Why even have them if they done deploy.

This is very dangerous to have a running vehicle die when driving, or stopped at a red light. This has happened multiple times. I usually know when it's about to happen because my vehicle shakes, sometimes very hard, right before it happens. The dealership has stated that it will be expensive to diagnose because it happens irregularly, and they have no idea what could be causing it. No warning lamps, engine light, or any messages prior to staling. However, as stated prior, sometimes the vehicle shakes just before stalling. SOME COMPONENT ON A SIDE OF THE VALVE COVER WAS MOVING AND MAKING THAT NOISE AND ALL THE SUDDEN, I SMELLED GAS, LOOKED DOWN THE SCAPE MANIFOLD AND SAW GAS ALL OVER IT. I RAN BACK TO THE CABIN AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, TOOK THE EXTINGUISHER AND RAN BACK TO THE CAPOT. FORTUNATELY NOTHING HAPPENED. SECOND EVENT: WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON AT 120 KM/H, ON A PRETTY FLAT AREA, THE GEAR SHIFTED FROM 10 TO 7 WITH NO REASON AT ALL, AND I FELT LIKE THE TRUCK STARTED TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKES. THE HIGHWAY WAS CLEAR IN FRONT OF ME. NO CAR OR OBSTACLES WERE NEAR THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK. SECONDS AFTER THAT, THE ENGINE STARTED TO FAIL, DROPPING THE RPMS LIKE THOSE OLD MECHANICAL CARBURETOR STUCK WITH A DIRT AND SUDDENLY, ALL GOT BACK TO NORMAL. FORTUNATELY WAS ALMOST REACHING THE TOLL CONTROL TO ACCESS TO MY CITY. SO I SLOWED DOWN TO 50 KMS/H, PUT MY FOOT ON OVER THE BRAKES AND STARTED TO PRESS IT VERY GENTLE. SUDDENLY AND WITH NO WARNING, THE TRUCK SPED UP ITSELF FULL GAS AND I HAD TO DODGE A CAR THAT WAS IN FRONT OF ME DRIVING ON THE LINE TO THE TOLL AND PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD. SEVERAL LIGHTS INVADED THE DASHBOARD; LOW COOLANT, CHECK ENGINE, THE DASH BOARD DIMMER LIGHT AND OTHERS THAT I COULDN'T SAW ON THIS FAST FLASH OF LIGHTS. IT WAS LIKE THE CPU WAS CRAZY. AFTER THAT, TRUCK WENT BACK TO NORMAL, BUT SEVERAL OBD2 ERRORS GOT STORED.

I had a problem that would cause my transmission to randomly downshift or slip into neutral while in drive. When this happened it would also disengage cruise controll and would disengage the blind spot monitoring system.Took it to the dealership and they confirmed it was a faulty molded lead frame. I had them replace the part. But was doing research and saw where they have had similar recalls on previous years.

While driving, the rear window opened up by itself and would not close. Controls were dead. Found a wire bundle (not a harness) which runs from the body control module to several sensors, including the 110V power converter, were worn through shorting out. The wiring lies in a channel along the rocker panel on the interior of the vehicle. The wiring is not protected from abrasion which led to the abrasion of the wires shorting out. Since 110V is running along this same channel, the potential for a fire is high, plus shorting 110V AC with 12V DC.

THE DOOR LATCHES WILL EITHER FREEZE WHILE THE DOOR IS SHUT, PREVENTING THEM FROM OPENING, OR WILL FREEZE AFTER THE DOOR HAS BEEN OPENED, WHICH PREVENTS THEM FROM SECURELY LATCHING WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO CLOSE THEM.
