2015 Ford F-150
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 1,003 complaints across the 6 model-year 2015 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road, and a complaint count isn't a reliability score.
Price & value
We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.
How does the price compare?
- Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
- Enter that value and the asking price below.
Enter both numbers to see how the price compares.
This only compares the two numbers you enter: more than 5% over the value is above it, within 5% is near it, 5–15% under is below it, and more than 15% under is significantly below it. Price alone can't tell you a truck's condition or whether it's a good buy. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book.

Problem: Engine unexpectedly goes to idle speed after accelerating up to highway speeds. Cruise control was not engaged at time of failure. This has happened three times, all after a cold start up, and all within 2 miles of home. The most recent occurrence being 6-19-25. At time of failure, multiple warning screens come up on the dash, including "Hill Start Assist Not Available", "Service Advance Trac", "See Manual" (with a picture of a wrench). No check engine light comes on, and no error codes are set. Engine does not respond to accelerator pedal, engine will only idle roughly. When this occurs, the only remedy is to pull over to the side of the road, shut off the engine, then restart the vehicle. Each time this has happened, the engine starts and runs normally with all warning messages cleared from dash. Safety Concern: Unexpected loss of power can increase the likelihood of an accident, especially in heavy traffic. This truck is used frequently for towing, and an unexpected loss of power can create a loss of trailer control. Dealer Contact: Last September when this issue initially cropped up, the truck was taken to our Ford dealer for diagnosis. They kept the truck for approximately two weeks, driving it daily without having the issue reoccur. They performed diagnostics on electronic modules but found no concrete issue. Inspection: Truck has not been inspected by the manufacturer, only the dealer. Warning Lamps and Messages: "Hill Start Assist Not Available", "Service Advance Trac", "See Manual" (with a picture of a wrench)

A recent recall on F250’s, 350’s and other ford fleets on the reverse camera not operating intermittently. It’s a known issue. I reported it to my local ford dealer back in 2019 and they said I would need to drop the truck off for over a week just for diagnosis. Single vehicle family here. It’s a big loss of situational awareness in areas like parking lots and with more people walking around with their phones in their faces like zombies, and with the camera inoperative, has greater potential of loss of life or damage to property.

I noticed in the fall of 2024 that my transmission stared shifting hard between 30-40 mph during acceleration. I had the local Ford dealership check out the issue and they stated I needed a new transmission and included an estimate. I decided to seek information from 2 independent transmission shops and they could not confirm that I needed the transmission replaced at that time. The vehicle has been driving fine and I recently started to notice the hard shift again at 30 mph. Every once in a while, when the hard shift occurs, it seems like I lose power to the drive train and my vehicle slows down to about 15 mph and vehicles need to go around me. It only lasts for a few seconds and then the acceleration will continue to drive normal. I do notice an increase in RPM's from time to time as well while shifting around 30 mph but does not feel like it is slipping. Once through this area of shifting, the vehicle operates normally shifting through other gears. There were no warning lights or other symptoms leading to this issue. I did notice that there was an article posted with a possible transmission issue from this year vehicle that is being investigated concerning sudden down shifting while driving. Here is the article [XXX]. I am wondering if this is part of this issue? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

For the past 3 days, I have had intermittent loss of steering from a power steering failure while driving on interstates/highways. Almost completely unable to steer it to safety on the side of the road. Ford has a recall(15S18), but I was told its vin-specific. My truck's vin does not fall under the recall, yet im having the same problems as the recall claims. Reaching out to see if this can be resolved and have a recall initiated. Thank you

I am the original owner and from the start of ownership in 2015 I noticed after 30 plus minutes of driving when making a sweeping left turn, like around an S turn in a road, the steering wheel would have resistance. At the point of resistance if I go back to the right it is smooth. Try to turn left and again it near hangs up. Just a notable amount of resistance. I had the extended warranty and have my truck regularly serviced by the local Ford shop. They could never duplicate my concerns over the years. I suspect they are not driving it long enough and/or not making a seeping turn. I do have concerns that the steering box will lock up and thus result in a serious accident. I had the intermediate shaft replaced, no difference. Ball joints inspected, all good. I always have fresh tires on and the brakes are in top condition with new rotors. Still hangs up. My research points to the gear box which is a very costly repair. My vehicle is now out of warranty. I have never taken my vehicle off road. There are enough online reviews regarding this issue that I believe Ford should recall and put new steering boxes in at no cost to the owner.

The 2015 F150 shifted itself from drive at 60mph to 1st gear. I as leading traffic when this occurred. The rest of traffic went around me as, I went to shoulder of rd. The F150 shuttered and was unable to be steered safely off the road. Warning lights flashed but as a driver I was unable to watch as traffic behind me was more important then watching F150. As a Simi was also close to me. This was a very scary event! As my husband was with me and is [XXX] he doesn't drive. Smoke came from under the vehicle. I see this is a common accurate with the F series of 2014. I would suggest checking the 2015. We have since had it fixed and it now drives better. I noticed a marked difference, from when I purchased it a few mos. Earlier. Seriously it could have been a wreck. Strong driving instinct is what saved us this time. As I was driving my 2015 Ford F150 ( 53453 miles)today the electronic power steering quit working and locked the steering wheel as I was rounding a long left turn. As I was coming out of the corner the steering wheel locked and continued to turn left causing me to cross the center line and enter into oncoming traffic.Luckily for me and everyone else the driver of the oncoming car saw me coming over and responded accordingly. I had to force the steering wheel to the right to get the vehicle to respond. Once I had the truck back in my lane the steering started binding and three different faults appeared on the dash. 1. Electronic Power Assist 2. Advance Trac 3. Hill Start Assist. The locking (binding) steering wheel continued for the next 8 miles until I was able to get it safely off the highway. After shutting the vehicle off and restarting it the faults were no longer showing and the steering started working properly. After researching this online it appears to be a very very serious issue with these trucks. I also see that this issue has been reported to the NHTSB by other people with the same vehicle. If not for the alert driver in the oncoming lane there would have been a serious head on collision with sever injuries. I have no choice but to drive this vehicle not knowing if or when this will occur again. This is an issue that more than likely will result in fatalities. I am hoping this will be investigated with top priority.

The cause is believed to be an electrical short. There were no modifications or recent repairs.

It's the same issue as Recall Notice 22S02/NHTSA Recall 22v011. The replacement part is MR3Z-7583-A 1X ($2-$5 part with 30 second install), but they do not show it under parts for my truck, they would prefer to sell me the whole brake pedal assembly ($50+ part and labor probably diagnosis charge in addition to part replacement). The part becomes brittle and breaks. This caused dead battery, 5 hours from home, due to lights staying on, allowed me to start and put truck into gear without touching the brake, lost acceleration between 45 & 50 mph, cruise control would not turn on and message presents that hill assist is not available.

The sliding rear window assembly which is attached with 4 adhesive tape strips have come loose. The sliding window comes out of the frame and could become airborne if hit from the rear or in a front end collision. It is a very poor way to attach a sliding rear window and the failure rate is high. The bad part of this is most people are probably not aware of the problem other than the window frame will rattle sometimes when your on a bumpy road. It is a poor design and could be dangerous in any collision. The body and glass repair shops are aware of the problem on the rear windows of Ford pickups. This should be fixed with a recall before someone dies from the window becoming airborne in a crash

Shortly after turning on the rear window defroster the vehicle interior began to fill with a strong electrical burning odor and then within about 30 seconds the back glass shattered with a loud pop that was very startling and distracting. I took photos but plan to have the window replaced as soon as possible since I need it to get to work. This happened while driving at a slow speed but if it had happened at high speed then it could have caused me to swerve and lead to an accident. I called the Ford dealer and they were not aware of this being a problem. However, the retail glass repair shop said that they frequently see this issue with F-150s. The vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. Aside from the electrical burning smell there were no indications the impending glass shattering. I did some internet searching and found that many ofther F150 owners have had the exact same issue and all report that it occurred when the rear window defroster was activated.

I got out of the truck to shut the door but it would not close. After having my kid pull and holding the door knob up from inside. The door finally closed. But I did it again later on in the trip. It sounds like the same recall that is on other 2015 f150. The dealership here in Marysville ohio states that it not a recalled item. They want to charge me $600 plus the fix the kinked wire. I refuse to pay to have it fixed because it sounds like a recall. So the vehicle just sits in my driveway.

On September 13, 2020, my father was driving his 2015 Ford F150, with me in the passenger seat. We were hit in a high speed head-on collision on I-55/I-240 in Memphis, TN by an oncoming driver, which killed both my father (the driver), and the oncoming vehicle driver, and I was taken to the hospital with injuries in critical condition. My father was extracted from the vehicle and taken to the morgue, but when I was able to return to the truck at the impound lot, I found no drivers side airbag in the truck. While EMTs informed me that the airbag was cut, it was odd that the airbag was not still in the truck. His cause of death was blunt force trauma, and if the airbag did deploy, it would have had to have been a part of the immediate fatality. If it did not deploy, it would also have been a factor. On the passenger side, where I had been, all airbags were still attached, but cut in order to extract me. In the days immediately following the accident, my lip was swollen from hitting the airbag, but there was also a piece of shrapnel lodged in my lip, confirmed by XRay, which later came out. I am concerned about both my father's fatality, and how the airbag deployed and what role it played in the fatality, as well as the injury of shrapnel getting embedded in my lip. I believe that the airbag could be a contributing factor in both issues.

My 2015 Ford F-150 truck has had multiple issues related to performance issues, with only 80,000 miles on it. I have had issues with it losing power while driving, both with and without towing a trailer where it just powers down on the highway from 70-75 mph down to 40-50 mph in traffic. I usually just have to pull over, turn the engine off and then turn it back on and everything runs normal. It is currently at Phil Long Ford in Colorado Springs, CO, having the short block and driver side cylinder head replaced at 80,000 miles because it was smoking out the exhaust and they determined that it had coolant leaking into the #4 and #5 cylinders. This is after it had a completely new engine installed at 75,000 miles due to coolant leaking into the 3# cylinder and causing severe damage to the engine. It was in the repair shop from August 2023 until late December 2023 because the engines were are backorder. The Passenger side cylinder heads are currently on a 13 month backorder according to the dealership, which is why they are only replacing the short block and Driver side cylinder head this time, after only 5,000 miles on the replacement engine. I have also received multiple recall notifications regarding this vehicle, the most recent of which was on 4/22/2024 for #24E03 POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE UPDATE, none of which have been repaired during the multiple times and extended durations that my vehicle was at the Ford dealership for repairs. Two recalls existed and should have been repaired when my vehicle was at the dealership between August and December of 2023, and the most recent recall shows "No Remedy Available" for a PCM Module Software Update?

LED headlamps become too dim to drive at night. 1. Dealerships may recommend headlamp unit replacement (around $3000USD). 2. However, uniform dimness in both lamps indicates an upstream electrical issue. 3. Recent service inspection (Invoice #[XXX] at AutoNation Ford in Bellevue, WA) indicated that all existing diagnostic procedures to inspect voltage and battery health came up negative, but they have no process to diagnose the control unit or measure the candle output of the headlamp projectors. 4. Case #[XXX] has been opened up with Ford to ask engineering to develop a procedure to diagnose, repair, and potentially issue a recall with the part. DRIVE IN THE INTERSTATE I FELT SOMETHING TAP MY SHOE AND AT THE SAME TIME CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATED AND THE HILL ASSIST WARNING LIGHT COME ON. I THEN TRIED TO ACCELERATE AND FOR A SECOND THERE NOTHING HAPPENED AND THEN ACCELERATION CAME BACK ON AND IT WOULD CUT OUT LIKE TRACTION CONTROL IS KICKING IN. PULLED OVER ON TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE AND FOUND A BROKEN PLASTIC PIN LOOKS LIKE A BODY PANEL PIN ON THE FLOORMATT. ME BEING A MECHANIC [name removed] ME TO LOOK AT MY BRAKE LIGHT TO SEE IF THERE BEING ACTIVATED WITH NO PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL . THE LIGHTS WERE ON TELLING ME THAT THIS PIN HAD TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. ONCE I LOOKED UNDER THE DASH, I DID FIND THAT THIS PIN CAME FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL AND WAS NO LONGER PUSHING ON THE BRAKE SWITCH AND THAT'S WHAT ACTUALLY CAUSE MY CRUISE CONTROL TO SHUT OFF AND TRACTION CONTROL KICK IN AS I WERE DRIVING ON INNERSTATE. I WAS ABLE TO TEMPORARILY FIX THE ISSUE WAS A BODY PANEL PIN THAT I BY LOCK HAD IN MY GLOVE BOX FROM OTHER PROJECTS AND WAS ABLE TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD AND MAKE IT HOME .THE ISSUE IS THE THIS ORIGINAL PLASTIC PIECE IS A CERTAIN THICKNESS THAT IF YOU REPLACE IT WITH A THINNER PIECE YOU STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND IF YOU GET THIS TO THICK YOU HAVE TO PUSH HARDER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND DEACTIVATE CROUSE CONTROL, AND THAT'S WERE IT CAN GET SCARY GOING 70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DEACTIVATE THE CROUSE CONNECTOR. SO I CALL THE LOCAL FORD PARTS STORE AND THE ISSUE IS THAT THIS PLASTIC PIN CAN NOT BE PURCHASED BY ITSELF AND THAT THIS PIN HAS TO BE PURCHASED WITH A $150 PEDAL. SO I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF MAYBE THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I FOUND MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME ISSUE AND NO RECALL FORM FORD FOR THIS ISSUE WITCH IN MY OPINION IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. 2015 F-150 WITH 76000 MILES.

REGARDING: 2015 FORD F150 WITH 20,000 ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. -Made 1st report with NHTSA.gov as well as Ford.com back in June 2023 about the vehicle throwing codes for anti-lock brake system and communication loss of ECM/PCM. As well as, the system NOT ALLOWING the brand new battery to ever be fully charged. -Upon 1st reporting these issues, the vehicle was placed into the "Friendly Ford" service center in crosby, tx to be worked on and issues fixed. $1,376, later, we were contacted by the service center to pick the vehicle up, saying issues were now FIXED. (their prognosis: auxillary transmission pump replacement 6/19/2023) After picking vehicle up, all seemed to be running correctly. Until, the vehicle decided to do the exact same thing again...no charging the battery, not starting engine, turning itself off, ect. just got the vehicle out of the same service shop,, this time them claiming that it was now the transmission control module that needed to be replaced. this service trip costed $1490 (july27, 2023). When the service worker went out to bring the truck around for us to leave, he had to attach a battery booster to the battery, just to be able to start the vehicle....DING< DING< DING!! Not fixed......right ?! CORRECT!! it is NOT!! SO, here we are again (07/29/2023) with the code reader at Autozone saying "anti-lock brake system/ ECM/PCM (U0151-00 and U0100-00). Battery tested to be in good working order, as well as the entire starting system, itself is in complete working order. and STILL our problem persists.

Unable to tell which gear because the gear indicator lights on dash stop working during this time. Many warning icons pop up on dash readout during this (check engine, wrench, cross traffic collision, lane assist, etc.) I see on the internet this problem is extremely common due to the 6R80 Transmission Molded Lead Frame failure which has been involved in millions of recalls but for some reason not my vehicle. this is extremely dangerous and could be life threatening to my auto occupants and others in traffic. Several weeks went by. I really didn’t believe the sensors, didn’t work.We were in a parking spot. But, the truck in reverse. Waited for people to go by. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. We did see people on the camera. Recently, I was behind the truck again. The sensors did not go off! We are very cautious now. Aware of the problem. Why hasn’t this truck been in the recall lists?. The accident was visible on our ring. I have video. But could not figure out to download. I can sent by email.

Vehicle has a catastrophic design flaw. If water enters the LED BLISS tail light assembly even in small amounts for anreason, including due to manufacturing defects, minor damage such as a crack, e treme wet weather, or wear and tear of seals, then numerous electrical failures occur of the entire warning system. This includes not only the tail lights, and blind spot backup and cross traffic systems, but catastrophic failure of all dashboard door and window controls. The vehicle cannot be easily unlocked including with remote, climate and accessories cannot be controlled. They vehicle can barely be operated and great expertise and expense required to return the vehicle to proper service. This has happened twice to this vehicle in 2022. Both times it was from minor damage to the taillight lens. Water entered the connectors for a network system which is critical to numerous vehicle safety and critical systems which are completely digital. The part required replacing is available only from a dealer as an OEM part and cost $500 plus labor. Research shows this is a widespread confusing problem, which renders high end models nearly inoperable with uncontrollable systems other than basic engine functions and subjecting consumers to great inconvenience and expense. The manufacturer does not appear to have offered recall services and only will repair or replace if the item fails under warranty. Under any interpretation this problem is a gross failure in engineering and safety. What other vehicles with a minor taillight problem have failure of a majority of systems? So many codes are thrown that the average technician and consumer must bear great expense to repair for diagnosis, and then replacement with extremely expensive parts only available from dealer.

I let my 83 year old mother use my truck due to expected extreme weather in Houston. While making a right hand turn the steering seized and she had to brake hard to avoid hitting a mailbox. Neither the tow truck drivers nor I could budge the wheel, even to allow it to be put on a flatbed or towed backwards without being sideways. Several error codes paged through the dash upon failure but the only other symptoms was that she said it felt like the steering wheel wanted to fight her right before it happened. Diagnosis - Failed EPAS Electric Power Assisted Steering rack. I take issue with a steering assist system being allowed to catastrophically fail with no warning or ability to manually maneuver safely to the side of the road. My mother could have been killed!

Tire: P265 / 60 R 18 On June 25, 2023 at 1100 hrs, the left rear tire began shedding chunks and immediately had catastrophic tread separation. This caused a temporary loss of control narrowly missing collision with other vehicles. When the tread separated at least one large piece did not tear free and acted like a flail significantly damaging my vehicle (left read qtr panel and truck bed). This sudden tread separation was a significant safety risk to me and my passengers. Vehicle was inspected and tires rotated 1 week prior to the incident by a qualified mechanic. No warning lights were illuminated prior to the incident. Mechanics inspected the damage and tires and noted that the matching tire on the pax side shows signs of possible tread separation. Rather than verify the tires and order the replacement tires, the desk clerk and then the Service Manager have given us the run around. The tires have now been recalled since March 2021 and we started to go into this store in May 2021 to get the issue resolved. The desk clerk has told us that the service manager, [name removed], turns away everyone who comes to the store with a tire recall notice. We provided them with a copy of the recall notice repeatedly and had the vehicle there to verify the DOT number. [name removed] is running this business in a manner that fails to comply with federal law and puts customers at danger for failing to order replacement tires, failing to comply with the federally-mandated recall, and intentionally delay the replacement process on unsafe tires that the NHTSA has determined "may lead to a crash".

Warped exhaust manifold. The design of the exhaust manifold where it connects to the turbo is not engineered correctly and only has 2 mounting studs. The heat generated from both the exhaust and the turbo is more than the 2 manifold studs can handle and the exhaust manifold warps causing a broken manifold stud and exhaust leak. This is clearly an engineering design fault and this part should be recalled. Loss of performance, and fuel economy. No warning signals in the vehicle. This is the second time that the exhaust manifolds have warped. The first time was covered under the powertrain warranty and replaced by the dealer at +/-60,000 miles. Warped exaust manifolds due to broken bolts. Both sides. Result in bad emmisons and possibly of carbon monoxide entering occupied cabin and poisoning passengers. Glazing/ warped rotors. Unknown cause.
- Filed Dec 2021 · Also filed under Fuel System
This problem has now occurred again and is no longer covered under warranty at 86,000 miles

WHEN PASSING A SEMI TRUCK ON THE LEFT (SEMI IS TO THE RIGHT OF ME) USING THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION, THE TRUCK SLAMMED ON ITS BRAKES AND SAID COLLISION WARNING. CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST REAR ENDED ME. THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY LIKE 6 TIMES IN 3 MONTHS AND ONLY HAPPENS WHEN PASSING A LARGE SEMI AND THE SEMI IS TO MY RIGHT. ONLY HAPPENS IN DAY TIME AND EVEN THEN, ONLY SOMETIMES HAPPENS.

ADAPTIVE CUISSE CONTROL FALSELY DETECTS POTENTIAL COLLISION WHEN PASSING SEMITRUCK (18-WHEELER) ON INTERSTATE/FREEWAY HIGHWAYS AS SPEED OF 70MHP. THE BRAKES ARE AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED AND COLLISION WARNING MESSAGE GOES OFF IN THE DASHBOARD CENTER SCREEN. THIS HAPPENS VERY FREQUENTLY WHEN PASSING SEMITRUCK, TO THE POINT THAT I EITHER DISABLE THE CRUISE OR GET READY TO PUNCH THE ACCELERATOR IN ORDER TO PREVENT A REAR-END ACCIDENT IN CASE SOMEONE BEHIND ME.

WHILE THE CRUISE IS SET AND TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE, IN THIS CASE 70MPH, WHEN I PASS AN 18 WHEELER THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL SENSES AN IMMINENT COLLISION WHILE PASSING THE 18 WHEELER IN THE LEFT TRAVEL LANE. THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE IMMEDIATELY ALERTS AND ENGAGES THE BRAKES. FORTUNATELY, THIS HAS NOT YET RESULTED IN A REAR END COLLISION IN MY CASE HOWEVER I'M SURE AT SOME POINT IT WILL WITH OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE SINCE I PURCHASED THE F150 IN JANUARY(2015) AND BOTH OCCURRENCES HAPPENED WHILE PASSING A TANKER TRUCK SPECIFICALLY AND WHILE IN THE LEFT LANE- TANKER TRUCK WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE TRAVELING AT A SLOWER SPEED PERHAPS AROUND 60-65MPH. THIS DEFECT TO ME APPEARS TO BE VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE IF MY F150 ENGAGES THE BRAKES FOR NO REASON AND THERE WERE TO BE CARS BEHIND ME A REAR END ACCIDENT COULD LIKELY OCCUR ON THE INTERSTATE. FORD HAS BEEN VERY SLOW IN RESPONDING TO THIS SAFETY CONCERN AND HAS NOT CAME UP WITH A FIX FOR THIS ISSUE. MANY ON INTERNET ARE VOICING CONCERN HOWEVER ARE TOLD BY DEALERS THAT THE SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED AND SENT ON THEIR WAY.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL WAS SET AND ENGAGED ON VEHICLE AT 75 MPH. MY VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING ON INSIDE LANE OF FOUR LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY AND CAME UP ON SLIGHTLY SLOWER VEHICLE TRAVELING IN THE SAME LANE AT AROUND 70 MPH. MY VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN AND TRACKED THE OTHER VEHICLE FOR ABOUT A MILE BEFORE COMING UP ON A SLOWER MOVING TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK IN THE OUTSIDE LANE. AS THE VEHICLE IN FRONT ON MY TRUCK PASSED THE TRACTOR TRAILER ON THE INSIDE LANE, IT MOVED OVER IN FRONT OF THE TRACTOR TRAILER TO THE OUTSIDE LANE TO ALLOW ME TO PASS. INSTEAD ON SPEEDING UP TO 75 MPH, MY TRUCK STARTED TO BRAKE BEFORE I DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL (AROUND 65 MPH). AT THAT TIME, I WAS LOCATED BESIDE THE TRACTOR TRAILER NEAR THE BACK OF THE TRAILER. A VEHICLE FOLLOWING ME HAD TO BRAKE DUE MY TRUCK UNEXPECTED BRAKING AND SLOW DOWN.

WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT IN THE FAR LEFT LANE GOING 72 MPH WITH THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL ON, THE TRUCK RANDOMLY SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND THE RED CRASH INDICATOR FLASHED ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NOTHING IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK. IF SOMEONE WAS BEHIND ME, IT IS LIKELY THEY WOULD HAVE REAR ENDED MY VEHICLE. THERE SEEMS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE AUTO CRUISE CONTROL,ALTHOUGH FORD BELIEVES THIS BEHAVIOR IS NORMAL.

2015 FORD F-150 MANUAL ON PAGE 263 HAS INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROPER SETUP OF AN EQUALIZING HITCH FOR TOWING A TRAILER. THE INSTRUCTIONS CALL FOR RETURN OF THE FRONT FENDER HEIGHT 25% OF THE WAY FROM HEIGHT WHEN LOADED WITH TRAILER TO HEIGHT WITH NO TRAILER. THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE HITCH MANUFACTURER WHO RECOMMENDS FRONT FENDER HEIGHT TO 75% OF THE WAY FROM LOADED TO UNLOADED CONDITION. IN THE WORDS OF THE HITCH MANUFACTURER "WHY WOULD YOU PUT ON AN EQUALIZING HITCH AND NOT SET IT UP TO DO WHAT IT'S INTENDED TO DO?". THE RESULT OF THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FORD MANUAL WOULD BE INADEQUATE EQUALIZATION, AND THEREFORE LOSS OF STEERING WITH A RESULTING POTENTIAL FOR ACCIDENT. I THINK THIS IS JUST A TYPO, BUT HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANYONE AT FORD WHO WILL LISTEN AND FIND SOMEONE TECHNICAL ENOUGH TO CHECK IT OUT. *TR

We are not sure what component or system failed or malfunctioned. The truck is available at this time for inspection, there wasn't much left of the truck after it caught on fire. The passengers in the truck were in danger, because they didn't realize the smoke they were smelling was coming from the truck they were riding in. It was not until one of the passengers said his arm was hot, it was then they realized the truck was on fire. The fire seemed to have started under the seat. I am not sure what caused it. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to this incident. The vehicle has been inspected by the insurance company, in which the truck is a total loss. The sheriff office and Fire Department were on the scene.
