Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 647 complaints across the 7 model-year 2019 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

Out of specs crankshaft machining, excessive journaling chamfering & debri in the oil galleries have caused rod bearing failure resulting in total engine seizure. This is consistent with the NHTSA 25V-274 recall, of which identifies the 6.2L V8-L87 engine as defective, resulting in 12 recorded accidents. However, this recall does not cover the 2019 model year.

It also has been looked at for the rough and they said it was normal now at 100,000 miles by train ships out of gear while driving and coming to an idle at random spots, took it into a train shop Westland transmission. They said I need all new transmission which I think this should've been fixed a long time ago with the rough shifting the recall and lawsuit needs to add the six speed trans to the eight speed intense speed that GM is officially getting served on.

V8Component Affected: Electrical System / Power Train (Transmission) / Engine Cooling & WiringDescription of the Safety Defect and Incident:While operating the vehicle, severe electrical degradation occurred due to a catastrophic failure of the factory body-to-chassis grounding system. Upon professional inspection by a certified mechanic, it was discovered that the primary ground wires had suffered extreme thermal degradation, with the mechanic stating that the wiring components "almost melted in his hands" upon physical touch.Because the vehicle's manufacturing-defective ground strap severely corroded and failed, the high-amperage electrical current redirected itself along an unintended path of least resistance: directly through the transmission shifting cables and internal wiring harnesses. This extreme electrical bypass caused extensive thermal damage, melted critical electrical insulation, and permanently fried the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and internal transmission components, causing total mechanical failure. Why this is a Critical Safety Hazard:Fire & Thermal Risk: The failure created an active thermal event under the hood. Electrical current reaching temperatures high enough to melt heavy-duty wiring harnesses poses an immediate vehicle fire risk while operating or parked.Sudden Loss of Propulsion: The electrical short directly compromises transmission communication, risking an uncommanded shift into neutral or total loss of motive power while driving at highway speeds, creating a severe crash hazard.Manufacturer Action / Request for Investigation:General Motors recently issued Customer Satisfaction Program #N252515590 specifically to address this exact "body-to-chassis ground strap corrosion" defect on 2019–2024 Silverados.

We recently had a brand new engine installed In our truck that only had 70k miles and only 7 years old due to white smoke coming out of tail pipe. The day after receiving the truck back after having the brand new engine installed the truck was not operating properly then gave me a bunch of warnings and then the brakes wouldn’t work and the steering wouldn’t work. I informed the dealership that installed the brand new engine and they had the truck towed back to their shop just to look at it for 3 days and proceed to tell me there was no issues they could find. Picked the truck back up just to have the same issue happen not even a month later. I was able to document the warnings and issues while they were happening and provided those to the dealership when we drop it off for the second time after getting a brand new $13k engine installed. If you would like the video I captured of the warnings I will happily send them.

In September 2004, I filed a complaint on my 2019 chevrolet Silverado was making a noise from under the steering wheel (like a click noise at least twice) also the brakes were changing the movement when I pressed the brakes. One night the brakes completely went out while driving at 55 mph. I tried everything from pumping hard but the pedal went all the way to the floor with no result. I related the gas until the vehicle came to a stop. From there I placed the vehicle on park in the middle of an intersection. When the traffic light turned green I placed the vehicle on D and it moved but still with no brakes. I parked on the side of the road and called a wrecker to tow my truck home. It was could not be driven. After filling a complaint the local dealership called me and fixed it free of charge. Last week the noise on the steering wheel came back and the brakes are acting funny again. While driving my 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the brakes unexpectedly locked up and multiple warning messages appeared at the same time, including “Service ESC.” There were no warning lights, messages, or symptoms before the incident. The problem occurred without warning while the vehicle was being driven normally. The sudden brake application made the vehicle difficult to control and created a significant safety risk because it could have caused a loss of control or a collision with other vehicles. The vehicle is available for inspection. At the time of this report, the exact cause of the failure is unknown.

While flat towing my pickup truck behind my motorhome, on interstate 94 eastbound, in Minnesota I noticed smoke on my screen in the motorhome back facing camera. I safety pulled over to a truck rest area in Avon Minnesota. I went to investigate and realized that the pickup truck had flames coming from underneath the hood. Because of the fire and heat I wasn’t able to release the pickup truck from the motorhome which ultimately caused the Motorhome to catch fire as well. Police and fire department were called and both the Motorhome and pickup truck were totaled. My insurance company has possession of both vehicles. I previously had electrical problems with the pickup truck and took it to the Chevy dealership to address the issue. Evidence of module overheating with traces of burn were found on one occasion. I’m uploading photos of the police report and work orders from the dealership. No one was injured but all of our belongings were destroyed or damaged from the fire. We were left with nothing but what we had on at the time.

2019 Silverado experienced sudden engine failure while driving, creating a safety hazard. Had taken vehicle to Serpentine in Tallmadge Ohio for brake repair as well as a ticking sound a couple of times within the past 2 years. Each time the complaint regarding the noise it made was not addressed or documented as they said it was the brakes. While driving the truck, it started clanking and banging, smoking and spewed oil all over engine and ground. The truck is completely inoperable.

I have a severe safety concern regarding the auto shut off for this Chevy Silverado pick up. Several times I have almost gotten into an accident because while slowing briefly to stop before making a left, turn across traffic, the engine shuts off. When you press the gas, the engine starts back up, but the delay causes a safety concern with oncoming traffic. This feature should have a longer delay or be selectable to turn on. Not require someone to disable it. Every time is driven.

The ABS error and Trailer Braking failure warning also appeared. After 4 to 5 restarts of the truck the steering came back. If this was to happen at high speed it would have been very bad. I feel this is definetly a safety issue..

AFM causing engine tick. I am reporting a radiator failure on my 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 equipped with the 6.2L V8. The vehicle developed an active coolant leak from the radiator assembly. The coolant reservoir level dropped significantly after normal driving, and coolant was visibly leaking and collecting underneath the vehicle. The truck initially began running warmer than normal, approximately 215–220°F, before the leak was fully identified. After topping the system with the correct DEX-COOL coolant, the coolant level continued to drop and an external leak became clearly visible. The vehicle was subsequently parked to avoid engine overheating or further damage. The original radiator carries GM part number 84152439. I have since been advised that the current GM replacement radiator is part number 85575815. I was also informed by GM dealership personnel that radiator failures involving this application are currently being investigated. My concern is that a sudden radiator failure can result in rapid coolant loss and overheating, potentially causing engine damage or vehicle disablement while driving. This is particularly concerning because the temperature gauge may initially remain near normal even while coolant is being lost. I am requesting that NHTSA review radiator failures on 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models, particularly vehicles equipped with the 6.2L engine and heavy-duty/enhanced cooling package, to determine whether there is a pattern of premature radiator cracking, tank/seam failure, or other coolant-loss defects that warrant a safety investigation, service campaign, or recall.

I am reporting a potential safety defect involving my 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 Trail Boss (VIN [XXX]), currently at approximately 63,000 miles. My truck suddenly developed a rough idle, engine ticking, and a cylinder 3 misfire. The check engine, traction control, parking brake, and “Service ESC” warnings appeared. The transmission also began shifting extremely hard, at times feeling as though another vehicle had struck the truck from behind. The oil pressure gauge also stopped functioning. Due to these symptoms, I stopped driving the vehicle. A diagnostic scan produced P0303, P0449, P0498, P0499 and P0500. After replacing a failed cylinder 3 spark plug, the truck initially ran perfectly for approximately 20 minutes before the rough idle and warning lights returned. The vehicle was subsequently diagnosed by a Chevrolet dealership. The dealership determined that the engine suffered a collapsed lifter that damaged the camshaft and other internal engine components. The engine repair estimate is approximately $10,000–$12,000. The dealership has also reported that the transmission is slipping and believes the torque converter/transmission requires approximately another $6,300 in repairs. I am concerned that a lifter/DFM-related failure causing a misfire, rough running and potential loss of engine power could occur while a vehicle is traveling at highway speed and create a significant safety hazard. The severe transmission shifting and subsequent slipping are also concerning because unexpected vehicle behavior during acceleration or while in traffic could increase the risk of a crash. The truck has been regularly maintained and has relatively low mileage for its age. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether similar engine/lifter/DFM and related powertrain failures represent a broader safety defect and whether an investigation or recall is warranted. When I went to start it again all I would get was a cranking noise but no firing. After 30 minutes of waiting the truck started again. In which I drove it 3 more miles before it shut down again. After that it would not crank nor start. I then had the vehicle towed to my local Chevrolet dealer, and they had notified me that the engine had failed and locked up. In the process it had also taken out the FPCM (fuel pump control module) aswell as the high pressure fuel pump located on top of the motor. Causing me to have a new motor from GM installed. I had no previous problems or lights before this had happened.

Unclear if this noise came from the wheel bearing failing due to misalignment caused by added stress on the single remaining bolt or the rubbing of one of the bolts against the axle. Visual inspection showed one of the bolts had almost completely fallen out. Car was towed to a repair shop and wheel bearings and bolts were replaced.

. I bought this truck for my husband as a birthday present & it has been a nightmare. My husband is a [XXX] & I wanted a vehicle that he would be comfortable in to take him to his numerous medical appointments. The first indication was the check engine light came on. I took to to O'Reillys & they scanned the vehicle & no issue was detected. I then had several instances where the vehicle would not start & one instance when it would not go into reverse & the truck was making a noise from the underbody. The windshield washer unit also was not working. I then took it back to the Ford dealership where it was purchased. They ran a scan at the dealership & said there was nothing wrong. They then indicated that I should take it to a Chevy dealer which I did. They stated that Chevy has a special scan that the previous scans cannot access. I documented all the issues and the Chevy dealership found 8 issues including the transmission, holes in the struts, software issues, washer pump, grille shutter & loose battery cables. The Ford dealership agreed to fix the struts & the washer pump as well as the diagnostic testing. I thought we were going to be able to resolve the transmission and the grille shutter issue but that has not happened. The defective grille shutter is what is activating the check engine light. The Ford dealership charged me for fixing the battery cables and yet they were needed to be done again. They also told me that the grille shutter was not necessary as I could drive with it but I would never know when I had an actual problem. They wanted to replace the torque converter. I submitted a request to Carvana & they offered me 5,000 and I paid double that plus. I don't feel safe driving the vehicle and GM is well aware of the issues with this make and Model. Sliding rear window leaks in 3 spots. Leak poses the safety risk of mold growth inside the vehicle along with the potential of water getting inside of electrical components and air bag device compartments. The problem was reproduced and confirmed at the dealership, to which the plastic seal at the top of the rear window was confirmed to have failed in 3 locations. Dealership recommended replacing the entire back window and assembly with what they believe to be the same window assembly that failed. The only inspection completed on the vehicle to date has been the dealership GM certified technicians. Musty smell after rain and observed staining on the headliner is when the issue was first identified.

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, at approximately 5:00 PM, I experienced a sudden and complete engine failure while driving my 2019 Chevy Silverado equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine. Without warning, the vehicle lost all ability to accelerate, creating an immediate and dangerous situation for myself, my family, and surrounding drivers. I was forced to rely on the vehicle’s remaining momentum to maneuver to the side of the road, all while other drivers honked as I attempted to merge with no engine power. This incident caused significant stress and posed a serious safety risk. My vehicle had to be towed home and then to [XXX] Casa Chevrolet at [XXX] . After inspection, the dealership informed me that the engine requires a full rebuild, despite the vehicle having only 115,697 miles. According to the dealership, the engine shows **no compression on all cylinders**, **crankshaft and camshaft compression failure**, **pistons coated in oil and fuel with visible damage**, and a **non‑functioning timing chain likely due to a broken guide**. These findings mirror the exact symptoms currently under investigation in GM’s **EA25007** inquiry involving the 6.2L V8 (L87) engines in 2021–2025 GM trucks and SUVs GM has already issued a major recall affecting nearly **600,000 vehicles** due to defective connecting rods and crankshafts that can cause sudden engine failure, stalling, and potential fire hazards. Although my 2019 Silverado is not included in the recall, it is experiencing the same catastrophic engine failure associated with the defective components identified in the investigation. The dealership has quoted me $10,000 for an engine rebuild and has refused to assist with the cost. I have also filed a complaint directly with GM, as this failure presents the same safety risks and mechanical defects acknowledged in the recalled models. This sudden engine failure placed my family and other motorists in immediate danger, and the lack of w INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I have a 2019 Chevrolet High Country, have always kept it serviced and maintained. Driving down the road it randomly lost power, wouldn't let me (driver) give gas, started shaking and making loud clanking noise from the engine. Was able to pull over to the side of the road, recorded the noise it was making. Called a tow company to get it towed to the nearest Chevrolet Dealer ship and they confirmed that the engine was no longer good. Related problem to the 6.2l motor issues. They are requested for a New motor.

My 2019 Chevrolet Silverado has experienced repeated engine issues, including a confirmed timing chain failure. The vehicle has been taken in for repairs approximately 6–7 times for the same or related engine problems. Most concerning, the vehicle has stalled while driving, creating a serious safety hazard. Loss of power while in motion puts me and others at risk of an accident. Despite multiple repair attempts, the issue has not been permanently resolved. The timing chain failure is a major engine defect and not expected for a vehicle of this age and mileage. I am filing this complaint due to the safety risk associated with engine stalling and failure.

The vehicle was shifting hard and eratically on the highway. All dashboard lights came on including the ESC failure warning. A misfire in cylinder 2 occurred without any warning lights causing the vehicle engine to stop running on a highway. The mechanic repair shop did a disgnostic evaluation and reported a catastrophic engine failure from cylinder 2. The engine does not run and requires full replacement. The vehicle has only 80,000 miles.

I was on my way to work and I stoped along the side of the road to help with a car accident. After helping the person and the ambulance arrived I went back to my truck. when I got in it everything was on but I noticed that it was quite and that’s when I realized the truck was not running anymore. I tried to turn it on and off but nothing happened besides all the dash stuff came on. It had been making a ticking noise but it would go away after a certain speed. After the engine would not turn on I had a friend that is a certified Chevy mechanic take a look and he told me the engine seized. It took 2-3x the torque to crank it over and when he was able to do that he found lots of metal shavings in the oil. I been out of a vehicle for almost 2 years now because of this issue.

Head lights are dim inside lights are dim. I can smell gas in my truck. Transmission jerks no power at all driving up a hill. I had a 2006 Chevy Silverado. I fell in love with it the first time I seen it. She had a v8 vortex motor in it. I don’t know why a person would put come up with a v6 to pull an 8000 lb truck!!! It takes forever to speed up! Hello, I purchased a 2019 Chevrolet Trailboss LT from a Chevrolet dealership on April 23 2024. I noticed a few days later and after the first rain, the back window was leaking water inside. There is a service bulletin regarding this issue, I called General Motors and was told that they recommend me getting this repaired at my expense. Ironically my mother whom was with me at the time of purchase was coughing on our way home from the dealership and said she’s very sensitive to black mold and felt the truck had mold somewhere in it. I do have pictures of large water stains on the headliner along with water running down the back window onto the carpet. I do not feel comfortable putting my family in this vehicle with possible black mold. At time of purchase, i mentioned to the sales lady that my mother suffers from a chronic lung infection and the leaking back window service bulletin was never disclosed with me. I feel that General Motors should be held accountable to make these repairs at their expense due to black mold, water around electrical and seatbelts. Thank you for any help

The infotainment system on the 2019 Chevy Silverado fails when a passenger is using Carplay. While using Carplay for hands-free operation of a cellular device and or navigation the system will reboot continuously. Just prior to the system failures to begin the turn signals will begin to operate sporadically. They will either stay on solid, off, or blink at an uneven interval. These system reboots create a safety issue as this forces the driver to take their eyes off of the road and physically disconnect and reconnect the cellular device. By having to take my eyes off of the road to deal with the system rebooting this takes attention away and creates a safety issue for myself and all others on the road. One incident I had to slam on the brakes after looking back up and seeing that traffic had come to a sudden stop. The unit has been replaced by the dealership one time thus far and the BCM computer has been replaced once as well. This has not resolved the issues. This is also not limited to my specific vehicle. There are hundreds of other owners reporting the same issues. The problem was reproduced by one technician at the dealership but has not been reproduced by them since. (They all have Android devices minus the one tech. This is a Carplay issue.) This has occurred more than 100 separate times on this vehicle beginning in November of 2019.

I am writing to formally express my frustration regarding the ongoing issues with my vehicle. The vehicle continues to overheat, the check engine light repeatedly comes on, and it has cut off unexpectedly. The tire air pressure sensors as well. These issues have persisted despite multiple repair attempts. I initially brought the vehicle to the dealership in December 2024, and again in March 2025 and now the vehicle is having the same issues to date December 2025. On both occasions, the vehicle remained at the dealership for over a month for repairs. Unfortunately, the problem has not been resolved. Each time I inquire, I am given different explanations as to why the issue cannot be fixed, which has been extremely frustrating and concerning. Additionally, I am being charged for services that I do not fully understand or agree with, especially given that the original problem still exists. Due to the lack of resolution, I have also contacted GMC directly to file a formal complaint. At this point, the ongoing delays, lack of clear communication, and unresolved mechanical issues are unacceptable. I requested a clear explanation of all charges, as well as a concrete plan outlining the steps needed to finally fix my vehicle. Please provide the appropriate point of contact and advise on how this issue will be resolved promptly. I expect immediate attention to this matter. Thank you.

On January 28, 2023, my Chevrolet Silverado was involved in a significant multi-impact collision. At the time of the accident, I was a front-seat passenger and my vehicle was fully stopped when it was struck from behind at high speed by a Dodge 2500. The force of the rear impact pushed my truck into the vehicle in front of us, resulting in a secondary front-end collision. This sequence occurred twice. During the collision, the front passenger-side airbag did not deploy, and the front passenger seatbelt failed to lock. As a result, I was thrown violently within the passenger side of the vehicle and struck my head on the dashboard. In contrast, the driver’s seatbelt locked properly, as did the rear seatbelt where my child was seated. Due to the failure of the passenger-side seatbelt to lock, I sustained a severe concussion, a black eye, and other injuries. The vehicle was subsequently inspected by my insurance company. When sheriff’s deputies and state police arrived at the scene, they expressed concern and surprise that the passenger seatbelt did not lock and that no airbags deployed despite the severity of the collision. Shortly after the accident, I contacted GMC regarding these safety concerns. GMC retrieved the vehicle’s Crash Data Recorder (CDR) and conducted an investigation. I was later informed that GMC found no defects or issues with their products. Nearly three years have passed since the accident, and I remain deeply concerned and dissatisfied with GMC’s conclusion. The passenger-side seatbelt did not function as designed, while the driver and rear seatbelts did, and no airbags deployed. I do not believe adequate accountability or explanation was provided regarding the apparent failure of the passenger-side restraint system. Given the force of the impact, I could have been ejected through the windshield.

My 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST was purchased brand new in 2019 and has less than 50k miles on it. The rear, passenger seat belt fails to retract which is a safety issue and where my child sits. Chevrolet stated that it was not covered under any manufacturer warranty or the purchased extended warranty from the dealership. This is a huge safety concern as the seat belt will not function without being able to retract. For it to fail with less than 50k miles and being less than 5 years old is unacceptable and so concerning. The estimated cost of repair is $806.51 which is crazy that they will not fix this issue as there is a new warranty for trucks built in 2021 and newer for safety belts specifically. Chevrolet should stand by their safety equipment, especially on their newer vehicles. I have uploaded a copy of the dealership information and recommended repair as well as cost of repair that they stated would not be covered.
