Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 302 complaints across the 6 model-year 2009 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

Recalls

A recall doesn't mean a truck still has the problem. Enter the truck's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a dealer to see whether the repair was done.

My truck has roughly 26,000 miles and the airbag sensing module on it corroded due to water gathering around it in the acoustic padding. It happens because water runs down a line that enters the cab and gets absorbed by the acoustic padding. This is a known issue as there is a recall for other states. My state is not one even though Louisiana is one of the wettest states and we also use salt in the winter when the roads ice. I’m glad I didn’t get hurt by this since it can cause the seatbelt pretentioners to fire and/or the airbag to deploy. This is the document from GM/NHTSA. Recently while up on the hoist the technician said the frame rust was very severe and the truck was in danger of buckling. Should it be so bad at 114,000?

    • Filed Mar 2024

I realized last weekend that BOTH of my rear doors were full of water. When I opened the rear door on the drivers side, I heard a water sloshing sound, which caught my attention. I closed & reopened the door & once again I heard the sound clearly. I left the door open & noticed the water pouring out at one corner. The water was draining from inside the door panel. I went to the passenger side of the vehicle & noticed the exact same situation. After 30 minutes of swinging the doors back & forth, I drained over a gallon of water from EACH of the rear doors. Considering the weight of a gallon of water, this is very much a safety hazard, not to mention the corrosion & rust that I am sure have built up over time.

On or around the end of September of 2022. My 2009 Chevrolet Duramax began to act up . Showing a trouble code of U0101… TCM could not communicate with the Rest of the vehicle. Contacted all the local auto parts stores. Nobody could get this part. Finally contacted the dealer. No luck , this part is on national back order. Contacted GM , they have no idea when this part is going to be available. After months of research I have found there is 1,000s of trucks parked awaiting for this one part. Ironically if you read some of the stories. Regardless of what year the truck is or how many miles is on it. They have all went out around the same time… odd my truck has been parked awaiting this part for 7 months. I’ve continued to make payments on this undriveable vehicle. Not only am I making payments on the truck I cannot pull my trailer for my lawn care business. Gm is costing us money everyday. Something has to change ASAP.

My 2009 Silverado has a very rusted frame. I have replaced bedsides and rocker panels due to excessive rust. Now the frame has holes in it. I'm not sure when it becomes a critical safety incident, but it is bad. It is ridiculous that I have owned this truck since 2012 when it had 42,000 miles on it. This frame is terrible for a well-taken care of truck.

This truck has the 5.3L engine with the Active Fuel Management system. I took the truck in for the 55,000 service on 02/04/2020. A month later with 56,000 miles, I had to take the truck in for something. At that time, I found out the truck had used up 2 1/2 qts of oil in 1,000 miles. Never had a problem using oil between the 5,000 mile service intervals before. Their are no leaks anywhere. The dealer had me bring the truck in every 1,000 miles for oil consumption checks for 4 times. The last time it showed a 1/2 qt usage. I had the 60,000 mile service. Then at 62,390 on 01/26/2022 I had some lifter noise. Checked the oil and found it had used 4 qts in 2,390. I had been told that the 2009-2011 Chevy 5.3L engines with the AFM had problems using oil starting around 60,000 miles. 4 qts of oil usage in 2,390 miles is not right.

The contact owns a 2009Chevrolet Silverado LD. The contact stated that he purchased his vehicle 2 months ago and when driving his vehicle at approximately 10 MPH, pulling off from a red traffic light, his vehicle's tailpipe had fallen off. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated at the time, nor an indication that something was wrong with his vehicle. The contact stated that he then took his vehicle to the dealer who advised him of a third party who could look at his vehicle and make the proper diagnoses, however, he would have to pay out of pocket. The contact stated he was unable to have the third party look at his vehicle, so he was able to fix the vehicle himself. The contact stated that shortly after he fixed the failure on his vehicle he went to start the vehicle with the remote start but the vehicle would not turn on. The contact stated the check engine warning light did illuminate at that time. The contact stated that he then manually started his vehicle and drove it to the dealer where it remains. The contact stated he was then advised by the dealer that his engine was bad amongst several other components. The contact has not contacted the manufacturer at this time. The failure mileage was 208,000.

The TCM failed in rush hour traffic! In Minneapolis Minnesota, the stability control light came on, traction control light came on, no throttle, no power. We backed up traffic, got push to the side of the road, towed to the service shop, and was told the Transmission control module (TCM) failed. Then told they are on national backorder from GM. The truck has been down for 3 months with no answers or parts in sight.

For the last few months, my Silverado 1500 Hybrid has been experiencing "bump jerk" phenomenon related to the Hybrid mode auto stop mode and the auxiliary transmission pump intermittently not operating correctly. This issue is intermittent. Sometimes in autostop, the truck behaves normally in Hybrid mode. However, when the auxiliary transmission pump is not operating correctly in auto stop mode and below 25 mph, the truck is at risk of not moving forward in proportion to throttle response as well as rolling backward if my foot is let off the brake while in traffic. After some research, this issue is described in PIP4751G.

THE MESSAGE CENTER INDICATED TO 'CHECK OIL PRESSURE.' DURING THIS FAILURE, I LOST ALL MOTIVE POWER AND HAD TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE HIGHWAY'S TRAFFIC AS OTHER VEHICLES WERE FOLLOWING ME, ONE OF WHICH CAME VERY CLOSE TO REAR-ENDING ME. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY IN WHICH THEY HAD INDICATED THAT THIS WAS SOMETHING THEY HAD REPLACED, ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS WITH THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE ON AT LEAST FOUR PREVIOUS OCCASIONS. THE REPAIR FACILITY HAS INDICATED THAT IT WAS DUE TO AN 'OIL PUMP FAILURE' THAT IS LOCATED INSIDE THE ENGINE. THE MILEAGE IS 112,651; I SURE WOULD NOT EXPECT SUCH A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT ENDANGERED OTHER MOTORISTS AND MYSELF. THERE WAS NOT ANY WARNING OF THIS FAILURE; THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD NOT BEEN ILLUMINATED BEFORE THIS FAILURE.

The steering column steering shaft disconnected from the back of the steering wheel. There was no warning signs prior to the accident. I contacted GM. They sent out a adjuster. And denied my claim but did not give me a reason why. My safety was at risk because I lost my steering. The steering wheel turned but the steering shaft became disconnected from the back of the steering wheel and there was no steering. This is a huge safety concern. If this happens to other people. Some one will get killed. I have pictures of the defective part.

My seat belt retracted pressing against my chest. i got out but there were no cars in sight. I walked around the truck to look for damage or if something like rear end locked or dropped. To my Surprise Everything looked fine. I was really shook up and Shaking. It was loud and really forced seat belt tight against me. I slowly started to drive off but my seat belt was stuck in the retracted position. I kept trying to free it up, but it was jammed. I did do a Internet search and found similar occurrences of seat belt malfunction. So to my best guess, the seat belt fired off and prematurely locked in tight position.

This is a malfunction due to faulty parts in the GM tire pressure reading system and they need to fix it. 2009 CHEVY SILVERADO LOST TRACTION ON HIGHWAY DURING SLIPPERY ROAD CONDITIONS, VEHICLE SPUN OUT AND HIT A METAL ROPED FENCE HEAD ON AND ALSO WENT ACROSS THE MEDIAN AND SLAMMED THE FRONT END OF VEHICLE INTO A GUARD RAIL STOPPING IT INSTANTLY FROM GOING INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLES DAMAGE WAS ON THE FRONT END DIRECTLY IN THE CENTER CAUSING A WEDGE INTO THE RADIATOR, ENGINE AND BENT THE FRONT OF THE FRAME. THE IMPACT WAS VERY LOUD AND SOLID. THE IMPACT CAUSED THE TRUCK TO STAND ON THE FRONT OF VEHICLE, SLAMMING THE BACK END OF THE VEHICLE ON THE GROUND WITH GREAT FORCE. THE AIRBAG DIDN'T DEPLOY WHICH AT THE SPEED OF AROUND 60 MPH AND THE PLACE THE VEHICLE WAS HIT IN, MAKES ME VERY CONCERNED ON THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE. MY 5 YEAR OLD SON SAID HIS RIGHT ARM WAS HURTING AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND WITH IN THE HOUR OF HAVING THE ACCIDENT MYSELF ENDED UP IN THE HOSPITAL WITH A STIFF NECK AND A VERY SOAR AND BRUISED BACK, I WAS RELEASED WITH MINOR INJURIES AND I CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS SITUATION AND THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY SON. *TR

WHILE DRIVING 60MPH ON A HIGHWAY, THE TRUCK SUDDENLY LURCHED AND TWO WARNINGS CAME ON THE DASH; SERVICE STABILITRAC AND SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL. THE TRUCK ALSO OPERATED UNDER REDUCED POWER AND I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE ACCELERATOR. GOING UP HILLS WAS AN ADVENTURE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD FOR THIS TO HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING AT ANYTIME ANYWHERE. DID EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ONLINE, AND FOUND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH GM STABILITRAC. BROUGHT TRUCK TO DEALER FOR REPAIR AND THEY SAID THIS IS THE FIRST ONE THEY HAD SEEN WITH THIS CONDITION. TRUCK HAD 37,400 MILES. DEALER REPLACED THROTTLE CONTROL BODY FOR FREE UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. TRUCK CURRENTLY RUNS FINE, BUT THE TRUCK DOES NOT IDLE AS WELL AS IT USED TO, SLIGHT VIBRATION AND STUTTER, DEALER SAID GM SAID THIS IS COMMON AND NOT A PROBLEM, IT IS SET ELECTRONICALLY AND CANNOT BE ADJUSTED. DO WE REALLY NEED ALL THIS ELECTRONIC CRAP? *TR

WHILE PULLING ONTO I83 I PUSHED DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL TO QUICKLY ACCELERATE TO MERGE. THE PEDAL BECAME STUCK ON THE FLOOR MAT STICKING IT IN THE DOWN POSITION CAUSING THE TRUCK TO RAPIDLY ACCELERATE AFTER I LEFT MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. I HAD TO USE MY FEET TO PULL THE FLOOR MAT BACK TOWARDS THE SEAT TO RELEASE THE GAS PEDAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, MOST RECENTLY NOVEMBER 20, 2012. *TR
