Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 633 complaints across the 6 model-year 2017 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

The left-side or right-side roof rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

Risk: A detached end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape and project the end cap or fragments of the inflator into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace both RRAB modules, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 9, 2026. Owners may contact GMC customer service at [phone removed] or Chevrolet customer service at [phone removed]. GM's number for this recall is N262569920. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended and the vehicle lost power. The contact merged onto the right side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle worked as intended; however, after driving fifteen miles down the road, the failure persisted. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The transmission was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 113,800.

Torque converter clutch failed and sent metal chips through the transmission causing the transmission to fall and made the truck not drivable. The check engine light came on a few hours before the transmission finally gave out. The transmission would not shift out of first gear. We were on a family trip to [XXX] from [XXX] and this left us stranded with three kids in the truck on the side of the road. When I took the truck to the shop they asked several other transmission shops if they had seen this issue and they all confirmed they did with the same truck and the best case is to rebuild the transmission instead of replacing the just the torque converter clutch due to the amount of damage it did. Transmission failure at 120, 000 was replaced. Then factory thermostat went and then trickled down to the transmission. Got too hot and cooked the transmission. Come to find out it was also the radiator so that was replaced along with the thermostat and a second transmission. Put a transmission cooler on but still get very warm on the transaction fluid. Can't keep the temperature down in the summer while I'm towing. Trailer is well under the weight of the max capacity for the truck. And the latest problem I've had was to replace parts of the frame because that was rotted and beyond inspectable. Now I'm 14,000 in the negative with no reprieve. What is GM going to do for me as far as reimbursement? Cuz I still owe a little over $9,000 on the truck. This is ridiculous and I believe I'm going to another brand of truck when I can get out from underneath this one. Driving home on the interstate my truck started making a knocking sound and the vehicle would shake over 45 miles an hour. We took to a dealer that said the lifters were bad, and potentially caused damage to the cam shaft. There was no warranty. I asked how this happens under 60,000 miles and was told it’s just part failure. And with the 6.2 engines, it’s a known occurrence. I then see that Chevy 6.2L engines for earlier years had a recall for this same issue but our 2017 was excluded. The dealer quoted $10,500 for repair. But we found a local shop that did the work for around $7500.

The vehicle has experienced persistent engine performance issues that have not been resolved through standard repairs. Initial diagnostics indicated knock sensor faults, which were replaced at significant cost. However, the issue persisted and additional codes related to air fuel imbalance (P219B) appeared. The vehicle continues to exhibit reduced power, hesitation, and inconsistent acceleration while driving. This creates a safety concern, particularly when merging into traffic or attempting to accelerate in situations requiring reliable engine response. The dealership has quoted a minimum repair cost exceeding $7,000, with the possibility of increasing to $10,000 depending on further findings once the engine is opened. Due to the high cost and uncertainty of repair, the vehicle may remain in operation with an unresolved defect. Research indicates that similar issues have been reported by other owners of this vehicle generation, suggesting a potential broader defect that may impact vehicle safety. This issue affects the vehicle’s ability to deliver consistent power and safe acceleration. Given the relatively low mileage and the severity of the repair required, this may represent a defect that warrants further investigation. My truck only has 72,000 miles on it, yet the lifters in the engine are failing/ malfunctioning. While in drive, it has a hard time shifting into higher gears causing the engine to continue revving but not picking up more speed. A quick google search shows this to be a common issue. GM was made aware of the problem but did not offer much help in resolving the matter. GM specifically stated the NHTSA needs to say it is a safety issue before they will do anything about it.

A very bad ticking noise from the engine. Since I purchased this vehicle, all maintenance and any recall repairs have been completed by the dealership. I first thought that when the oil was changed they did not change the oil filter. Then after a diagnosis of possible lifters in the engine, I did a little research and it appears that Chevy knew this problem existed in 2016 and continued to allow the production of the vehicle through 2018 when the issue was fixed. Why do I as a senior citizen on a low income have to pay for an issue that Chevrolet knew about but continued production of that vehicle with that issue still not resolved. I do not have up to $10,000 to complete that repair and cannot drive the vehicle knowing it has this problem and it could potentially create a bigger problem from driving it.

One of the factory solder joints on the air conditioning condenser failed causing the refrigerant to leak out of the air conditioning system rendering the air conditioning notn functional. This is a safety issue because without functioning air conditioning the windshield defogger is ineffective and visibility is drastically reduced. This is a known issue with 2017 through 2018 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. The problem has not been diagnosed by a dealer as I confirmed the diagnosis myself. There were no warning lights when the failure occurred. The only indication of the failure was the loss of effectiveness of the windshield defogger. This failure first occurred on 3/6/26 with 58,485 miles on the vehicle. I am the only one who has inspected the vehicle and it is available for third party inspection upon request.

I am submitting a complaint regarding my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT. My truck currently has approximately 80,000 miles, and it has recently been diagnosed by a Chevrolet dealership as needing a complete transmission replacement. This vehicle has been lightly driven and very well maintained, and I rarely drive it. Because of this, I am extremely concerned and disappointed that such a major mechanical component has failed at such relatively low mileage. A transmission should reasonably last well beyond 80,000 miles under normal driving conditions. The dealership informed me that the entire transmission needs to be replaced, which is a very costly repair. Given the mileage and the way the vehicle has been used, I believe this may indicate a defect or premature failure rather than normal wear and tear. I am requesting that General Motors review this situation and consider goodwill assistance or coverage for the repair. I purchased this vehicle with the expectation that it would be reliable for many more miles, and this issue has significantly affected my confidence in the vehicle. I would appreciate a review of my case and any assistance GM can provide toward resolving this problem

While driving the vehicle the passenger side of my rear window shattered due to the rear defroster circuit overheating. I brought the vehicle into my local Chevrolet Cerified dealership to examine - they stated that my vin number is not included in the wide spread recall affecting over 150k vehicles having the same exact issue. I did call GM and she told me how the recall could only be specific to vehicles manufactured at certain locations, or many other factors could lead to my truck not being covered. My vehicle has the power sliding center window - I have researched and have seen a ton of vehicles with this same rear window have the exact same issue as I did. Even the same side breaks. I don't understand how mine is not covered under the recall so many others are. This currently has not been fixed - I am concerned that the same issue will occur even after getting it fixed. I feel it should be not only covered under the recall, but the faulty part causing the issue should be replaced just as it has been with all the covered vehicles. I am asking for this to be reviewed further and expanding the vehicles covered under this recall. It is a very unsafe problem that can cause fire and injury. I don't know how bad this could have been if someone were sitting in the back seat when this happened.

When driving all gauges go to zero, truck doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, warning lights come on (service 4WD, service stabilitrak, service traction control, reduced power steering, service traction control, service trailer brake system ). When NOT driving if these issues show on the dash when parked and the car doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, it does not crank over, does not start, there is no clicking noise either like if it was a bad starter. All the dash lights, gauges, radio goes black as if I turn the vehicle off instead of on. This has been happening since around 2020-2021 in Colorado. It was in a shop for over a month with no resolution. In Idaho in 2022-2024 in a shop for a month with no resolution, and now CA in 2025. No mechanic shop can figure out what is wrong, no “certified GM” shop or “certified GM engineer/technician can tell me what’s wrong. I have had the following replaced already and still having issues. Issue is based off of this service bulletin, but GM has failed to call a recall on this for coverage. I was driving my daughter to softball practice. Every few minutes there would be a "stabilitrak" message showing on the driving information area. Then in slower speeds my dashboard screen would blank out and then go back to CarPlay. Then once I approached a parking lot at slower speeds my vehicle lost total power and shut down. Then had to switching the gear to park, then turn off the ignition key, then wait a few seconds and turn the key on to start the truck. It started as normal and was able to park in the parking space. Very scary and this is a very serious issue, I could have been in an accident with my daughter. This has to be addressed, I can't be the only one having this issue.

Engine shuts down on its own causing steering wheel to jerk and almost locks preventing control. Has been doing this for three weeks and is now getting much worse. Seems to do when making slow speed sharp turn. Almost hit another car in intersection yesterday due to steering control loss. I have seen numerous mentions of this on the internet but seems GM does not have a fix. The truck is now dangerous to drive as it can completely shut down in the middle of an intersection.

In light of the recalls for other Silverado Fuel Pumps, I believe an investigation should be initiated for vehicles like mine that are part of the same manufacturer but were not part of the original recall. Right when this recall was announced my Silverado which is in excellent condition and has only 73,000 miles on it has a failing fuel pump, communicated by a check engine light and coded for the fuel pump failure. According to my dealer the cost to replace is almost 2,000 dollars. A fuel pump in a heavy duty truck should not fail after only 73000 miles.

FRONT WHEELS SIMPLY JUST PEEL APART IN CHIPS. REAR WHEELS APPEAR TO BE FINE, SO THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH TURNING OR FRICTION ON THE FRONT WHEELS. THE TIRES CHIP AWAY THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE SURFACE OF THE THREAD, LEAVING VOIDS AND GASHES ON THE SURFACE. WE DRIVE ON PAVED ROADS, SO THERE REALLY SHOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE WITH EXCESSIVE WEAR SUCH AS DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. I DID SHOW THIS TO OUR LOCAL DEALER, THEY CLAIM THE VEHICLE NEEDS AN ALIGNMENT, BUT KEEP IN MIND THE VEHICLE HAS UNDER 15K MILES FROM THE DEALER. ALREADY, WE CAN SEE THESE TIRES NOT EVEN COMING CLOSE TO THE WARRANTY THREAD WEAR LIMIT. PER DEALER, NO RECALLS ON OUR VIN.

The AFM system is a faulty system that starved my lifters of oil and they ended up collapsing causing a flat spot on my cam. The engine code would come up as a misfire but the code is caused by the flat spot created on the cam by the lifter it's a faulty system that cost me $7,000. My 8spd transmission also has a hard shift from 1st to 2nd pushing the vehicle forward and jerking it when it shifts. The dealer and GM said this was natural with this type of transmissions which we now know is a lie.

My 2017 Chevy Silverado has four General Tires 285/45 R22 114 H installed. DOT HW6T HMW1 on all four tires. We had driven to Ohio from NY over the weekend and on the return trip (about 900 miles into the trip) the air pressure light came on and I noticed the Rear Driver side tire had 23 lbs of air. The leak was slow enough that I was able to drive 2 miles to a exit and stop at a gas station. When I got out I could hear the air leaking from the tire but could not see any visible issue yet. After jacking up the truck and removing the tire that's when I notice the tread was completely splitting away from the tire. See pictures. The tread had split about 3/4 of the way around the tire. Although this tire is not on the list for the recall 21T001000 the defect description matches.

The system that failed is the speedometer display and radio display while driving. This can be dangerous as I do not know the speed I am driving. This can also be dangerous as the display includes the screen for the backup camera that turns off without notice while backing up. The problem has happened many times in the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado owned by the company I work for. I own a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and the issue occurs in it, as well. I notified the GM dealership where both vehicles were purchased and they said the screen could be replaced but would be very expensive. No warning lamps or messages occurred. The screen jumps around a lot and occurs at various times (morning, afternoon, warm or cold weather, etc.).

I spoke with another gentleman who has a 2018 silverado lt and said his radio goes on and off and the screen is unresponsive. Yes the vehicle is available upon inspection.
