Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 799 complaints across the 5 model-year 2016 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

Vehicle suffered a failure cascade of the brake booster vacuum pump system. During a low-speed bumper collision on July 4 and a boat ramp slide, the pedal triggered abnormal ABS-like pulsing as the computer tried to hydraulically compensate for dropping vacuum pressure. This resulted in truck front bumper damage and boat trailer fender damage. On July 10, total failure occurred in a drive-thru, rendering the pedal rock-hard and sopping mear impossible. All marked parts and logs are available for inspection. Onboard diagnostic data reveals the electronic brake control module has driven continuously without a master clear for 22,665 miles, locking the last system initialization to 78,468 miles. This continuous data loop proves code C0299-00 was actively visible in the history log during the subsequent dealer service visits. Instead of performing the hardware pump remedy under Recall N192268490 (NHTSA 19V650). At the Jan 24 dealer visit (78,482 mi), dealer applied a software update and charged out-of-pocket fees to clear symptoms. They also ignored subsequent communication regarding the billing discrepancy. Technicians completely neglected the history logs despite explicit complaints regarding low-speed ABS sensations, trailer brake messages, park assist, and brake assist warnings. The 2026 dealers (and 2024) falsified multipoint inspections stating brakes required NO service until after winter. Jan '26 dealer delayed further diagnostics until June '26. May '26 dealer ignored texts regarding a crooked steering wheel and unstable tracking after alignment service. The truck was intentionally misdiagnosed as functional to avoid the warranty period repair. This unaddressed mechanical failure caused a destructive system cascade requiring replacement of the vacuum pump, oil-contaminated vacuum lines lines, oil-saturated booster, master cylinder, glazed pads, warped rotors, fluid flush, tires from module drag, alongside the resulting bumper and trailer property damage.

I was pulling up behind a vehicle that was entering the highway when I noticed that the driver had to yield to oncoming traffic and did not continue driving. I applied my brakes, but the vehicle did not come to a complete stop, and as a result, I struck the vehicle in front of me. My safety was put at risk, as this could have resulted in a major accident. Additionally, my car insurance premiums increased because of this incident. I was never informed about the recall, nor did I receive any phone calls or mail notifications regarding it. I only became aware of the recall recently after seeing posts on social media, which prompted me to contact my dealership. Upon doing so, I was advised that my vehicle does in fact have an active recall. I don't have any warning lamps or anything advising me of this issue.

Approximately one week ago I was driving at a safe speed on a two-lane highway. Suddenly, my steering wheel and truck jerked to the right. For 8-10 seconds a warning message was displayed "Power Steering ... Drive Carefully." I took the truck to my local dealership. They scanned for trouble codes. The technician said something about an interruption communicating with the electrical system. My service advisor took the truck on a 15-mile drive and had no problem. They scanned again and there were no trouble codes. The service advisor said they could not fix the problem if they did not know the cause of the problem. I left the dealership. Since then, I have had 4 more incidents. Once the warning message appeared again, but no jerk of the steering wheel or truck; once there was the same warning message and a jerk of the steering wheel and truck; and twice there were sudden jerks of the steering wheel and truck but no warning message. I have reported each of these incidents to the dealership. I also called Chevrolet Customer Assistance. I explained the problem and asked if they would assign a Field Service Engineer to assist the dealership. hey declined my request. Because I momentarily lose control of steering the truck, I fear for my safety and the safety of others.

For the past 2 years ive been having issues of losing power steering. Lots of parts and modules have been replaced out of pocket. Still not fixed. When it goes out it can be out for days to weeks and is extremely hard to steer. Its gone out or come back in during a turn which is very problematic and unsafe. I always get the same dash message, "service power steering drive with care". The dealership is aware and has seen the malfunctioning steering. So far the rack and pinion gear box has been replaced at $2700, then it was a terminal resistor that was replaced for $2,100, and several other trips in costing more money just to get the steering fixed but technicians have been unsuccessful so far despite their best efforts.

The seatbelt did not appear to lock or tighten as expected during impact. It is unknown whether the seatbelt pretensioner or airbag system activated properly. This created a serious safety risk, as the seatbelt did not perform its intended function of restraining the occupant during a crash. The vehicle was declared a total loss following the incident and is no longer available for inspection. The incident was documented through insurance and/or police reports. There were no known warning lights or prior indications of a problem with the seatbelt system before the crash. This failure resulted in occupant injury risk due to lack of proper restraint during the collision.

This happened at 41,786 miles. This happened again at 46,000 miles because of faulty GM parts and they needed to be replaced again. The parts were under warranty so there was no charge. This happened again at 59,000 miles and now both side lifters are bad and mechanic suggested engine replacement since he is sure this will happen again. Now it’s costing us 15,300 to repair it and GM/Chevrolet is not helping or do they care! First incident was in April 2023, second in November 2023 and now in December 2025.

I am reporting a manufacturing defect involving General Motors’ Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. In October 2024, my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT, at 96,000 miles, experienced a lifter collapse which caused sufficient wear to the camshaft that the engine needed to be replaced, which was performed. The malfunction indicator lamp turned on and the truck was driven an additional 2 miles to a safe location and subsequently towed to the repair shop. Before then, there had been no indication that a lifter had collapsed or that there was damage to the engine sufficient to warrant a replacement. In November 2025, I experienced another lifter collapse (on the replaced engine). While the mechanic recommended an engine replacement, the warranty company only authorized a replacement of the affected side cylinder head and lifter, which was performed. In February 2026, I experienced another lifter collapse, and the truck is currently being evaluated by a repair shop. These failures have occurred without warning and aligns with thousands of consumer complaints regarding AFM-related oil consumption, lifter collapse, and engine damage in GM vehicles. This is a known design defect that GM has tried to address through Technical Service Bulletins and engine redesigns, yet many consumers continue to experience premature failures at low mileage. This defect presents a safety and reliability concern, including loss of power while driving and significant financial burden to vehicle owners. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this ongoing defect.

The engine light displayed "Engine Power Is Reduced". This has occurred three times, twice in 2023 and again recently in 2024. We have taken the vehicle to a qualified shop on each occasion. The second time we took the truck to the shop, after keeping it for almost two weeks, it was returned to us, and according to the mechanic, the engine light would not come on with test driving and he stated there was not a problem. Although the engine runs roughly, we are able to drive it at low speeds. Currently, the engine light comes on intermittently. This past few weeks, it happened again while traveling 65 mph on a busy freeway. The engine slowed down and I was able to get it up to a max of 30 mph until I could get to a frontage road. We made it back to our destination at 30 - 40mph using flashers at some points because the engine felt as if it was going to stall. This issue could result in a rear end collision and serious injury. Although the engine runs roughly, we are able to drive it at low speeds. Currently, the engine light comes on intermittently. We will be returning the truck for service. However, we are not confident that the problem will be resolved.

The rear 3rd brake light above the back glass started leaking because the seal/gasket went bad. Water leaked into the cab and now the headliner has to be replace as well as that seal. I works for a glass company and this is a known problem for this year. There should be a recall or service campaign put out for this. I'm not the only one with this issue.

Truck lost power and died while making a low speed right turn. Attempted to start vehicle but was unable to immediately after losing power, after trying again for about 30 seconds I was able to get it to start and pull it off the road. I lost control of the steering as the steering wheel locked up. When I turned it back on the truck required me to roll the driver window down and back up and radio stations went back to the default station, letting me know that the truck lost power. This typically happens at low speed, but I have had it lose power while driving on the highway at night and my headlights shut off, luckily it immediately came back on.

I purchased a 2016 Silverado in 2021.I am writing regarding previously completed recall (N192265660) for my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, which addresses issues related to the rear window defroster overheating and the potential for thermal events. The recall repair was performed in 2020, but I am experiencing a recurrence of the issue. We live in Wisconsin, on a cold morning last week, the rear window of my vehicle shattered while I was inside. I believe this was caused by overheating of the rear defroster, since I literally watched it happen in my rear-view mirror, despite the recall repair having been completed. The fracture lines in the glass very distinctly show the source where it shattered, leading directly to the heating element for the defroster. This was a known issue addressed by the recall, and I am concerned that the problem was not fully resolved, as the damage was substantial and could have escalated into a fire hazard. On [XXX], the day of the incident, I tried to get a service appointment to have it looked at and was told there was nothing they could do since the "recall had already been done" to my truck. I contacted customer service and was able to have the truck looked at by a GM Service Center after they set up an appointment for me. The Customer Service manager even documented and diagnosed the cause as being the rear defroster that shattered the window, yet they still denied any help or offer to repair it. After nearly 6 weeks of back and forth with GM customer service, and then eventually escalating to the "Product Assistance Claims Team" I was still denied any help having the issue resolved even with every piece of evidence showing this was a failed recall repair. The vehicle struck a deer, and during the collision, the passenger seatbelt failed to properly restrain me. I was thrown forward and struck the windshield.

THE DEALER HAS COMPLETED A ROAD FORCE BALANCE THAT THEY SAY MEETS GM SPECS. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALER SAYS HE TOO CAN FEEL THE VIBRATION, BUT HAS NO AUTHORIZATION TO PROCEED. IT HAS BEEN A DOG AND PONY DANCE FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS. GM HAS DONE NOTHING TO FIX MY ISSUE. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE EXACT TIRES ON MY TRUCK FOR THE SAME ISSUE, BUT MY TIRES DO NOT FALL IN THE LOT OF TIRES RECALLED. I BELIEVE THERE IS STILL A MANUFACTURE DEFECT IN MY TIRES! THE RECALL NOTICE IS AS FOLLOWS:NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16T016000 . I HAVE LOGGED A COMPLAINT WITH CONTINENTAL. I HAVE VISITED DISCOUNT TIRE STORE IN WOODSTOCK GA. THEY ARE AN AUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTOR FOR CONTINENTAL. CONTINENTAL EXPECTS ME TO PAY FOR A NEW SET OF TIRES AND WAIT OR THEIR ANALYSIS TO DECIDE IF I WILL BE REIMBURSED. MEANWHILE, GM IS DOING NOTHING AS OF YET EXCEPT STALLING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NO PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE I BELIEVE THERE IS STILL AN ISSUE WITH THESE TIRES. THE DISCOUNT TIRE STORE MANAGER SAID HE HAD ANOTHER SILVERADO CUSTOMER WITH THE SAME TIRE AND COMPLAINT COME IN A WEEK PRIOR TO ME . THAT CUSTOMER WAS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES WITH A DIFFERENT DEALER HE PURCHASED THE TRUCK FROM. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THE TIRE ISSUE IS ADDRESSED? I WAS TOLD THEY COULD DO NOTHING UNTIL I HAD 1000 MILES ON THE TRUCK (THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT GET PAID BY CHEVY FOR WARRANTY ITEMS). THAT TICKET STATED THEY REBALANCED MY TIRES. THIS HAD NO CHANGE. I TOOK THE TRUCK BACK AFTER 1000 MILES. THE DEALER DID A ROAD FORCE BALANCE. THIS HELPED VERY LITTLE. NOW, AT 1345 MILES, IT IS BACK IN THE SHOP. THEY STATE THEY WILL DO A PICOSCOPE ON THE TRUCK AND CHECK THE AXLE. I SHOULD MENTION THE UNDERLYING ISSUE IS A VIBRATION THAT CAN BE FELT AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 65-70MPH. IT IS MORE PREVALENT FROM 70-75MPH. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM, REFERENCE CASE 82405350103. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE SAME ISSUE FOR THE 2014-2015 MODELS REFERRED TO AS THE "CHEVY SHAKE". ONE MORE ATTEMPT AND I WILL LIKELY START LEMON LAW PROCEDURES IN GA. I WOULD LIKE SOMEONE TO SERIOUSLY INVESTIGATE GM ON THIS COMPLAINT. HEADRESTS ARE DESIGNED IN A MANNER THAT YOUR HEAD IS CONSTANTLY PUSHED FORWARD. THIS LIMITS THE DRIVER BEING ABLE TO LOOK UP. IT IS VERY DISTRACTING TO HAVE TO KEEP THE SEAT BELT LOOSE IN ORDER TO LEAN FORWARD TO GET YOUR HEAD AWAY FROM THE HEADREST AND LOOK UP AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT OR READ SIGNS ON THE HIGHWAY. THE REMEDY SUGGESTED BY THE DEALERSHIP IS TO TURN THE HEADREST AROUND BACKWARD, WHICH LEAVES NO SUPPORT FOR YOUR HEAD IN CASE OF A REAR END COLLISION. MOST OWNERS I HAVE TALKED TO HAVE SIMPLY REMOVED THE HEADREST TO ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM. OTHERS HAVE RECLINED THE SEATS BACK, WHICH MAKES THE DRIVER VULNERABLE IN A FRONT END COLLISION OF SLIDING OUT UNDERNEATH THE SEAT BELT UNDER THE DASH. ACCORDING TO A GENERAL MOTORS REPRESENTATIVE THIS COMPLAINT HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE THE 2010 YEAR MODEL VEHICLES.

THIS IS DISTRACTING DURING OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING ME TO NOT BE ABLE TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE IN A SAFE MANNER. AS I COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS DURING PURCHASE, THE SALESPERSON SUGGESTED THAT THE HEADREST COULD BE TURNED BACKWARDS, AS DONE BY OTHER OWNERS. AS HE TRIED THIS TWO ITEMS WERE APPARENT, FIRST WAS NO SUPPORT FOR MY HEAD DURING A REAR END CRASH, AND SECOND THERE WAS NO POSITION HOLDS FOR RAISING OR LOWERING THE HEADREST. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO WORK WITH GM FOR A HEADREST PROPERLY DESIGNED TO SUPPORT MY HEAD AND BE COMFORTABLE DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. THEY HAVE STATED THE HEADREST IS WORKING ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURERS DESIGN, AND SAID I NEED TO READJUST THE SEAT. TO READJUST THE SEAT MEANS TO LEAN IT BACKWARD. THIS ACTION PUTS ME AT RISK FOR A FRONTAL CRASH BECAUSE NOW THE SEAT-BELT AND AIR BAG BECOME INEFFECTIVE ALLOWING ME TO SLIDE OUT UNDERNEATH BOTH. LEANING BACK IS NOT A COMFORTABLE POSITION FOR ME TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE. AGAIN WE GET INTO THE DISTRACTED DRIVING SCENARIO. ONE GM PERSON SUGGESTED I PURCHASE AN AFTERMARKET HEADREST, BUT WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT APPROVED AFTERMARKET HEADRESTS. I ASKED HIM ALSO ABOUT WHO WOULD BE HAVING THE LIABILITY IN CASE OF A CRASH. HE REFUSED TO ANSWER. ONE GM PERSON ALSO COMMENTED THAT THIS COMPLAINT WAS FIRST DOCUMENTED DURING THE 2010 YEAR MODEL LIGHT TRUCKS. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING INVOLVED WITH AN INCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE HEADREST.

PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT AT WORK AT LOW SPEED WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE TO BACKUP I NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS VERY HARD. I PUT MY TRUCK IN REVERSE TO BACK INTO A PARKING SPOT, THE BRAKE WAS VERY HARD AND WOULDN'T STOP. WHEN HIT THE FENCE THE TRUCK FINALLY STOPPED. CALLED THE DEARLER WHERE I GOT THE TRUCK, THEY SAID THERE'S A RECALL AND THE BRAKE SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED BUT THAT WASN'T GOING TO FIX IT. 2019 I TOOK THE TRUCK IN @ 60,000 MILES, THEY DID A REPROGRAM AND SAID THEY COULDN'T DO ANY THING ELSE UNLESS THERE WAS ANOTHER BRAKE RECALL. THE BAD THING ABOUT THIS WHOLE BRAKE PROBLEM IS GM KNOWS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND WON'T FIX IT. GM HAS AND WILL FIX THE PROBLEM IF YOU PAY 12 TO 1,600 DOLLARS. SINCE THEY DID THE REPROGRAM I HAVE 80, 000 MILES ON THE TRUCK AND AT LOW SPEED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR IN PARKING LOTS THE BRAKE IS VERY HARD AND THE ABS SYSTEM WILL ACTIVATE. SAME PROBLEM DIFFERENT DAY. I NEED NEW BOMBERS NOW. I GUESS GM IS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO GET HURT.
