Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 220 complaints across the 6 model-year 2012 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

Severe frame rot on driver side beneath the cab. Just noticed it today July 13, 2026.

    • Filed Jul 2026

I noticed the gas tank was listing to one end and not level. I noticed one of the tank straps had rusted away and I took the truck to a mechanic to replace the strap. The mechanic showed me that practically the majority of the frame was rusted away. There was nothing substantial enough for the straps to attach to. Are there many cases of the frame disintegrating on this model truck. I would be satisfied if the frame was replaced as I believe the manufacturer failed in protecting these frames from rusting away. I have been looking for a frame for a reasonable price and have not found one yet. I will also need someone to remove the old one and install the new one. I have not driven the truck because I am afraid it could collapse on the road if driven.

Airbag light came on indicating an issue. Went to dealer and the codes that came up are B0030 (Passenger Instrument Panel Air Bag Deployment Loop Stage 2 Short to Ground) and B0413 (Temperature Control 1 Feed back Circuit Actuator Stuck). It cost $597.67 to have a new airbag installed. I worry others couldn't afford this and it should be covered by the mfg due to the safety risk created from the vendor creating airbags that do not last the life of the vehicle.

Oil consumption on 2011 to 2014 Chevy Silverado engine related issues on the 5.3 liter v8 flex fuel engine. Vehicle produced a service engine soon light on 9/27/2022 so I took it to the local Chevy dealer mechanic. They inspect it and determine that it was a misfire in cylinder 7. They went to run it through my warranty that I purchased when I baught the vehicle 2 years ago. They advised that it would not be covered so to it being an oil consumption issue. They advised that to fix the issue permanently it would cost $3,600 to fix. Being that this is a known issue GM should be issuing a recall to correct this. I only have 60000 miles on the vehicle and the engine is basically junk without the fix. I do not have the repair invoice at the this time as it is currently in the shop with the local Chevy dealer The mechanic advised that this is a known issue with all Silverado’s between 2011 and 2014 and that GM knew this was an issue and that eventually the engine will sieze if you don’t have the pistons and rings replaced. This is a country wide problem and appears there is a possible class action lawsuit due to GM knowing this was an issue and in 2014 GM re-engineered the 5.3 vortec to correct this issue. In addition it is a known issue another problem is the rear wheel wells rusting on all Silverado’s. This should also be looked into Thank you for your time and consideration!

While driving the motor completely cut off. Yes, the vehicle can be inspected. The vehicle just shut down without warning, causing the vehicle to rapidly slow down with no warning to other motorists behind me. Yes, a dealer has confirmed the problem and could not definitively determine what the problem is. they said it could be: A shielded wire, service dept. said its not available from GM and would have to purchase the entire wiring harness and install to see if it fixed the issue. They said it could be a bad power inverter, again had to install to see if it fixed the issue. Finally said it could be a bad transmission(??) The only people who has attempted to diagnose is at the GM dealer service department. Their was no warning that the vehicle was about to turn completely off prior to it doing so.

Problem has been confirmed by a licensed mechanic, AutoZone, oreillys, and an independent mechanic. There was absolutely no warning this was gonna happen. December 2022, General Motors-Onstar system was deactivated in million of vehicles across America. This system was sold as a MAIN SAFETY and SECURITY system, integrated in millions of General Motor products was advertised as next generation Safety. This system allowed active subscribers the peace of mind that in the event of an emergency, they had us covered. motor vehicle collision detection for the event that you crashed, they could send first responders. If the vehicle was stolen, they had safe methods to locate and disable the vehicle. If you locked your keys in the vehicle with your child or pet, they could unlock it for you. In 2015 Canada "sunsetted" their 2G network which in turn would have disable Onstar for millions of Canadian vehicle owners across Canada. General Motors-Onstar offered FREE HARDWARE UPGRADES to keep Onstar active for whomever wanted and chose to keep the Onstar system working for them. Please refer to https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/SB-10089229-2280.pdf and https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10166666-9999.pdf. What about the vehicles sold in America? What about the people who purchased General Motor products for the specific reason of Onstar peace of mind? The people who want the system to function as it should? What if I do not have my cell phone with me in a remote location and I crash my truck at 70 mph? No Onstar to alert first responders. What if I accidentally lock my grandchild and keys in my car? Must i now break a window instead of calling Onstar and asking for an emergency unlock? And a very important one for me as many others. What if my vehicle gets stolen. Now there is no way to locate it. There is no way for Onstar to SAFELY shut it down so it could be recovered. I paid yearly for Onstar services for that exact peace of mind as did MANY OTHERS. There is even a petition where people are saying that if given the choice, they, like myself, would gladly pay to have the system upgraded like they did for Canada.

THE FIX, REPLACE GAS TANK AND SENDING UNIT, $900. I ASKED ABOUT THE WARRANTY, AND I WAS TOLD PAST MILEAGE, I'M AT 39000. I DIDN'T BELIEVE THIS COULD BE POSSIBLE THAT A 4-YEAR-OLD TRUCK COULD ROT OUT SO SOON THAT THERE MUST BE A PROBLEM WITH THESE TANKS. I CALLED GM TO ASK, AND THE WOMAN COULD NOT HAVE CARED LESS JUST LISTEN TO ME COMPLAIN AND SAID SHE WOULD CALL THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP TO CONTACT ME. THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. ALSO SAID THAT THE CORROSION WARRANTY DOESN'T COVER TANKS AND IT'S UP TO ME TO PAY FOR THIS. I SPENT $36000 ON THIS TRUCK AND DIDN'T HAVE A SCRATCH ON IT BUT NOW FIND OUT IT IS ROTTING THROUGH LIKE A TIN CAN. MY QUESTIONS ARE; SHOULD THIS HAVE BEEN COVERED OR RECALLED? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP?

Electric power steering motor failed while driving. The failure happened at such a time that it did not cause loss of control or a collision. The repair has yet to be completed at a local GM dealer due to awaiting parts. The failure of the electric power steering motor while driving the vehicle poses a massive safety risk to occupants of the vehicle and others due to there not being an apparent fail safe when the part failed, the steering wheel was completely locked in position and was not able to be turned. The local GM dealer reproduced the problem and diagnosed the electric power steering motor as the culprit and determined that the entire steering rack must be replaced due to the electric motor being a non-serviceable part. To my knowledge the defective part is still in the vehicle awaiting replacement at the dealer. There were no warning signs of a steering problem prior to the steering wheel being unusable and the dash displaying “service power steering” message.

I HAD A TIRE BLOW OUT AND DEFLATION WITHIN 10 SECONDS ON A DIRT ROAD. I LOOSENED THE LUG NUTS WITH THE SUPPLIED TIRE IRON AND PULLED MY LOWER BACK MUSCLES (TIRE IRON TOO SHORT). THE LUG NUTS CORNERS ROUNDED OFF (NOT HARDENED STEEL AS THEY SHOULD BE), AND MOST SERIOUS, THE JACK IS A POTENTIAL KILLER. IT HAS A SMALL DIAMETER DISK (APPROX 1AND 1/2 INCH DIAMETER) ON TOP, WITH FOUR SMALL BUMPS ON IT AT 90 DEGREES FROM EACH OTHER. THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE TO LOCATE THE JACK UNDER THE REAR AXLE APPROXIMATELY 2 INCHES INBOARD FROM THE SHOCK ABSORBER ALL BY PUSHING THE JACK WITH THE 4 FOOT LONG JACK HANDLE. VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCATE IT PROPERLY UNDER THE AXLE. I CRAWLED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND GAVE UP AS I COULD NOT HOLD IT IN PLACE UNDER THE AXLE AND CRANK THE HANDLE AT THE SAME TIME. A GOOD SAMARITAN PASSERBY STOPPED AND HE TRIED TO HOLD THE JACK IN PLACE (REACHING OVER THE TOP OF THE FLAT TIRE) AS I CRANKED THE HANDLE. THE VEHICLE WENT UP AND IMMEDIATELY SLIPPED OFF THE AXLE (ON A GRAVEL ROAD). THERE IS NO WAY THAT FOUR LITTLE BUMPS ON THE TOP OF THE JACK WILL HOLD THE JACK IN PLACE UNDER THE AXLE WHILE A PERSON JACKS IT UP. IF YOU CAN KEEP IT IN PLACE AND MANAGE TO JACK THE TRUCK UP, TRY TO REMOVE THE WHEEL AND PUT THE SPARE ON WITHOUT THE JACK FLIPPING OUT OF POSITION AND THE VEHICLE CRASHING DOWN.. IT IS A POTENTIAL KILLER. I WILL NEVER USE THE TIRE JACK AGAIN.... THIS ALL WAS WITH PERFECT CONDITIONS; (EXCEPT THE GRAVEL ROAD) OFF THE HIGHWAY, PERFECT WEATHER, AND DAYLIGHT. TRY IT IN THE RAIN OR SNOW ON THE SIDE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY IN THE DARK.... *TR

I BOUGHT MY 2012 CHEVROLET SILVERADO TEXAS EDITION ON, MAY 26, 2012, FROM CLASSIC CHEVROLET OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS. I PAID $31,622.80 FOR THE TRUCK. I FEEL THAT A NEW VEHICLE SOLD IN AMERICA SHOULD HAVE AN IMPLIED WARRANTY ATTACHED TO IT THAT GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND EXPRESS WARRANTIES WHEN IT COMES TO THE VEHICLE'S SAFETY. AFTER TWO YEARS AS AN OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE I NOTICED A STAIN ON MY REAR CARPET. THE MORE I RUBBED IT THE MORE IT SPREAD. I FIGURED THAT ONE OF MY GRAND CHILDREN PROBABLY SPILLED SOMETHING AND SO I JUST DECIDED TO TRY TO LIVE WITH IT. IN LATE 2019 I NOTICED THAT MY CARPET BEHIND MY DRIVER'S SEAT WAS WET AFTER A HEAVY RAIN. SO I TOWEL DRIED IT AND TOOK A PAPER RECEIPT FROM MY CONSOLE AND ATTEMPTED TO ADJUST THE HEADER PRESSURE ON THE REAR DOOR BY STRIKING THE ROCKER PANEL STRIKER. THIS YEAR I TOOK A TRIP TO KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI IN FEBRUARY. I FOUND MYSELF HAVING TO DRIVE UNDER RAINY, MISTING, WINDSHIELD, FREEZING AND FOGGING, UP. MY DEFROSTER WAS NO MATCH FOR IT BECAUSE IT NEVER WAS ABLE TO CLEAR MY WINDSHIELD SUFFICIENTLY. ON THE WAY BACK TO TEXAS I LEFT K.C. AT 4:00 AM. THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER WAS STILL PERSISTING. MY BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEARTBEAT RACED A FEW TIMES WHEN I TRIED TO MOVE AHEAD OF TRUCKS TO AVOID THE SPLASHING FROM THEIR WAKE. IN JUNE I DISCOVERED POOLING OF WATER BEHIND MY DRIVER'S SEAT. IT WAS SO RIDICULOUS I HAD TO TAKE IT TO CLASSIC. AFTER 3 HOURS IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THE SERVICE MANAGER RETURNED TO ME AND ESCORTED ME TO THE TECHNICIAN. THE TECH SHOWED ME THAT THE WATER WAS COMING FROM AN UNSEALED OVERLAP AT MY FIREWALL. HE EXPLAINED THAT THE LEAK'S BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME TIME. THIS AREA AT THE TOP OF YOUR FENDER IS WHERE THE WATER IS ENTERING AND IT FILLS UP AN AREA INSIDE YOUR FINDER AND THEN IT LEAKS THROUGH YOUR FIREWALL AND RUNS DOWN YOUR ROCKER AND SETTLES AT THE BACK SEAT WELL. THAT REPORT COST ME $145.00.*DT*JB*JB
