2018 Ram 3500
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 127 complaints across the 8 model-year 2018 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2013–2018 · 6.7L Cummins diesel, 6.4L and 5.7L Hemi V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
In 2013, Ram added diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to the 6.7L Cummins diesel, and in 2014 the 6.4L Hemi gas V8 joined the 5.7L Hemi. 2014 Ram 2500s also switched to coil springs in the rear.
We counted 5,984 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2013–2018 Ram 2500s and 3500s: 4,409 from diesel trucks, 1,154 from 6.4L Hemi trucks and 246 from 5.7L Hemi trucks (identified by VIN). Most of them are from 2017–2018 trucks, driven by the brake issue below. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Anti-lock brake (ABS) unit failures on 2017–2018 trucks are the most reported problem by far, and were recalled.
- The 6.7L Cummins in these years is generally well regarded. DEF heaters, NOx sensors and EGR coolers are the commonly reported repairs.
- Steering recalls cover the drag link and track bar brackets.
- A water pump recall on 2013–2017 diesels addresses a fire risk.
2017–2018: ABS and stability control failures
Brakes come up in 1,560 diesel and 505 6.4L Hemi complaints, mostly from 2017–2018 trucks. Owners describe ABS, traction control and "service electronic brake system" warning lights. Chrysler recalled these trucks because the ABS hydraulic control unit may fail, disabling anti-lock brakes and stability control (recall 24V896000). Many complaints say replacement parts took a long time to arrive.
When buying: confirm this recall is done. Any ABS or stability control warning light on the dash is a reason to walk away or get it fixed first.
Steering and front end
- The drag link can separate if a jam nut loosens on 2013–2018 trucks (recall 19V021000).
- Track bar frame bracket welds on some 2015 trucks (recall 16V559000).
- Front-end shake is reported far less than on older Rams, but still check the track bar, tie rods and ball joints.
6.7L Cummins
Generally considered a strong engine in these years. Commonly reported repairs:
- DEF heater failures that cause reduced power, especially in cold weather, and NOx and DEF quality sensors
- EGR cooler leaks (white smoke or coolant loss)
- Turbo actuator failures at higher mileage
- A water pump recall on 2013–2017 trucks with a certain brand of pump that can leak coolant (recall 17V562000)
6.4L Hemi
Owners on Ram forums discuss camshaft and lifter failures on the 6.4L, often announced by a ticking noise. A tick can also come from broken exhaust manifold bolts, which is a much cheaper fix. Have a mechanic diagnose any tick before buying.
Other recalls
Side curtain airbag inflators on 2016–2018 trucks (recalls 25V010000 and 25V592000), power tailgate latches, and a rear camera recall on 2018 trucks.

With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.
Risk and fix
Risk: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Fiat Chrysler issued a safety recall in 2024. The FCA recall number is C4B the NHTSA recall number is 24V – 896. This recall was issued almost 2 years ago, but Fiat Chrysler has made little to no effort to make parts available. I’ve attempted to have this recall repaired four times, and I am attempting again today. The dealership and Fiat recall department tell me there are no parts available. Per Fiat Chrysler, they are rolling out parts in stages. They are still working on 4550 & 5500 class trucks, two years later. They are rolling out the recall regardless of whether a truck is experiencing alerts on their dashboard or truck problems. Trucks that aren’t experiencing problems are getting parts before trucks that are, if they are not part of the current rollout. For over a year now, I’ve had the ABS light on my dashboard illuminated, with no antilock brakes in my truck and the truck constantly makes chime sounds while driving. Burlington Ram, in Burlington County New Jersey, has confirmed my lights and chimes are due to the part being replaced in this recall. I’ve complained directly to Fiat Chrysler and requested they make parts available. Two years later, they still will not make a part available although some dealerships somehow sell the parts to people who want to pay cash for them. Two of my coworkers have done this because their vehicles are out of warranty and they don’t want to wait for the recall. Fiat Chrysler has the parts, but they are rolling them out in a fashion they want to and not by what danger the parts are causing. They are not prioritizing vehicles that currently have no antilock brakes and are experiencing problems because of this part. I was hoping you could help intervene and convince Fiat Chrysler that vehicles experiencing an issue should be prioritized & parts be made available. I’ve been extremely patient, but driving such an expensive heavy duty vehicle with a recall being ignored is unacceptable. Thank you for anything you can do.

I am the owner of a 2018 Ram 3500 subject to Recall C4B (NHTSA Recall No. 24V-896) involving the Brake Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). The recall was announced on November 27, 2024. As of June 2026, NHTSA’s website still states that the recall is incomplete and that a remedy is not yet available for my vehicle. The defect causes active symptoms during operation. The vehicle continuously chimes while driving, similar to a seatbelt warning, and cruise control is disabled. These symptoms substantially interfere with normal operation, especially during long trips and towing. I have contacted authorized Ram dealerships and Ram Customer Care multiple times. Dealerships state that no remedy is available and refer me to Ram Customer Care. Ram Customer Care confirms that no remedy is available and provides no repair timeline or meaningful resolution. Most concerning, neither the dealerships nor Ram Customer Care will initiate a repair attempt because no repair procedure or parts exist. Owners are therefore unable to obtain repairs or even establish documented repair attempts despite the existence of an active safety recall. I was also advised that I could rent a vehicle at my own expense and potentially seek reimbursement if approved. Given that this recall has been open for more than 18 months with no available remedy or repair timeline, expecting owners to personally fund rental costs for an unknown period with only the possibility of reimbursement is unrealistic and inadequate. This open safety recall has negatively impacted the vehicle’s usability, resale value, and trade-in value while preventing owners from obtaining a repair. Stellantis acknowledges the safety defect, yet no practical remedy or alternative solution is available. I respectfully request that NHTSA review the continued lack of an available remedy, the extended delay in repairs, and the absence of a meaningful process for affected owners to obtain relief.

This is unacceptable and compromises me and my families safety. This is not a question of if it is going to happen, but when. My vehicle isn't under the category of "may be susceptible to failure" it has failed and I have permanently lost those BASIC and CRITICAL safety features. It is simply a matter of WHEN the lack of those features will cause an accident. There must be something done. . I have spoken with Mopar and several dealerships and nobody has given me any solution other than to say they will call me when a remedy is available. That is NOT ENOUGH. Recall language for C4B "The brake hydraulic control unit (HCU) on your vehicle [1] may be susceptible to failure or malfunction which may result in a reduction or change of Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) /Electronic Stability Control (ESC) /Traction Control performance. A failing HCU will initially result in the intermittent loss of ABS/ESC/Traction control progressing to permanent loss. The loss of ABS/ESC/Traction control may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. "

I am getting an error concerning the antilock brakes on my truck. This error is random shows up every few days. When it does show up it dings every thirty seconds and does not stop, which is very distracting. Also shuts off the cruise control. It took a copy of the recall to my local dodge dealer and they will not fix it.

My vehicle is included in safety recall 24V-896 for a defective HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit). I have contacted the dealership multiple times, but the replacement part is never available. This recall affects critical safety systems including ABS and Electronic Stability Control. Despite being a safety recall, there is no estimated timeline for repair due to part unavailability. I am concerned about driving a vehicle with an unresolved safety defect. The manufacturer has been unable to provide the recall repair for an extended period.

I have not been involved in an accident yet. You can’t drive the truck because the warning goes every 2 minutes. The brake hydraulic control unit has failed and they will not fix the truck. I can’t pull my camper. I have at least 6 hours on the phone with Ram and they say there is nothing they can do. The dealer ship says they have the part that is on the truck now, but Ram will not allow them to install it. It’s not the new part. Mean while my truck is useless until they fix it. They have been aware of this issue since 2017 and they still do not have a replacement part. The right thing for them to do is put the they have on hand on it so I can a least drive the truck. ABS and Traction control lights keep coming on intermittently. I know this is a known problem and a recall has already been issued. I feel like this is too important of an issue for Ram to be allowed 18 months and still no remedy. I could understand if this was a part availability wait but to not have a remedy after 18 months should require some sort of punishment for them or something should be done to make them fix this issue. There were previous models that didn't have this issue and there are replacement HCU modules out there for a 2011 - 2016 as well as 2019 and newer models that are good parts not under this recall, why can't the remedy be to use the parts used on these models to fix this issue. That is something that shouldn't take 18 months for a company to resolve. It appears they do not really plan to resolve this issues from what dealers are telling us. That is uncalled for.

My 2018 Ram 3500 had safety recall V06 (19V-021) performed, which involved welding the drag link. This recall remedy has caused a secondary safety defect: my vehicle is now severely out of alignment, causing rapid, uneven tire wear on the outside edges and compromising steering handling. I contacted FCA Customer Care (Case #97534845). They acknowledged TSB 19-001-19 exists for aligning welded trucks, yet my dealer refuses/is unable to align it. FCA representative 'May' then instructed me to 'pay out of pocket' to replace the steering components. FCA is refusing to honor the replacement clause outlined in their own STAR case 9100268. The manufacturer's recall remedy has ruined my steering geometry, and FCA is refusing to fix the safety hazard they created

Before the recall, I was driving my vehicle and the brakes and the power steering locked up. The vehicle felt like it was trying to drive with the emergency brake on. After this happened, I took the vehicle to Haley Jeep Jam, Richmond, VA, and they said they couldn't determine anything was wrong, but replaced the brake pads. Shortly after this visit to the service department, the recall appeared. Since the recall, we have contacted Haley Jeep Ram and Whitten Brothers multiple times, but they are unable to fix the recall due to no resolution from Daimler Chrysler. In August 2025, Whitten Brothers, Ashland, VA, replaced the part with a new, recalled part as a temporary fix. There is still no permanent fix for this recall which continues to be a safety risk. Since the vehicle has an outstanding safety recall, we are unable to sell or trade in this vehicle. We have been patiently waiting but believe this should no longer be our problem. Daimler Chrysler needs to do the right thing to assist the vehicle owners. We have mailed a corresponding letter to NHTSA. Thank you for your time.

My vehicle is experiencing an abnormal free play in the steering wheel during driving on mountain roads. The steering box will all of a sudden get “light” and over steer in a long corner and has been getting worse, I have had several other friends that have experienced total failure of the steering box and have reported that the problem gets worse over time, before complete failure of steering. My nearest dealer has confirmed that the steering box may need to be replaced but it is not a “recall”! Seems pretty dangerous to me if steering may fail. Many online forums have numerous customers with same issue and had to have steering box replaced for this exact senerio. This is a highly costly repair and my truck only has 73kmiles on it. I feel this is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed by Ram! Especially if they have replaced steering boxes due to this exact complaint. They quoted me over $2500 to replace, but said it was not covered under a recall? I am very nervous driving this truck when this situation has gotten worse and is very noticeable when driving.

On March 3rd, This dealership replaced the stop sale safety recall on our Commercial vehicle (C4B) with a part that was not created for our truck. This resulted in hydraulic brake fluid spewing out of the HCU all over significant areas under the hood, including the ABS Module and wiring. Upon realizing the HCU was spewing hydraulic brake fluid, we brought the truck back on March 7th, and again, the dealership replaced the HCU with the incorrect part (but assuring us it was the actual part for this specific recall) and Sam (service advisor) told us they would also be replacing the ABS Module and the wiring associated, as the ABS module had also been recently replaced and was still covered under warranty. When we received the car back, Sam (service advisor) explained that they would like the truck back at a later date to replace the wiring - that they have already replaced the ABS module so we will still see the ABS light, but only because the wiring needs to be redone. We picked up our truck on Friday March 8th, and when my fiancé began his route on [XXX] with his trailer attached, he made it about 20 miles before his truck completely shut down mid-drive while on a busy road- forcing him to have to coast over a 4 lane roadway and into a ditch avoiding collision of oncoming traffic with his trailer and equipment attached. We discovered that the mechanics had fraudulently replaced our HCU with another trucks HCU and had to force the recall through Mopar's reimbursement process, as it was rejected multiple times because the remedy is not currently available therefore unable to be completed. On May 3, 2025, while driving my 2018 RAM 2500 with approximately 46,000 miles, the check engine light came on and the engine immediately experienced a significant loss of power. The vehicle entered a limp mode condition, drastically reducing speed and acceleration. I was forced to pull into a nearby business as the truck could not maintain safe highway speeds, creating a traffic hazard and contributing to congestion. The vehicle was diagnosed by a repair facility as having a failed turbo actuator, a critical component in regulating turbo boost and engine power delivery. After researching this issue, I have found numerous similar complaints and reports from other RAM truck owners on various owner forums and websites, indicating this may be a recurring and potentially widespread defect in these vehicles. Given that this failure occurred at relatively low mileage, caused a hazardous driving condition, and seems to be a commonly reported problem, I believe this issue warrants investigation by NHTSA for potential safety risks and manufacturer accountability. No injuries or property damage occurred, but the incident posed a significant safety risk to myself and other drivers.

Since purchasing this truck brand new in 2018 we have had nothing but problems with this vehicle. Dodge Ram failed us every time. They failed to work with the dealer and ignored every attempt to find solutions. It started with vehicle loosing power on very dangerous locations a specially freeway located in curves in the middle of nowhere. It took years to fix that problem. Multiple times we drove from the shop being told that it was fixed and it wasn't. We would drive right back in after 15 min. It took over 3 years to get dodge and dealer to replace the transmission and all electrical issues. The other problem that we have had since buying this truck is the AC. Its been always a problem we are continuously trying to fix it and its been very hard. This entire summer my children have been suffering. We are driving in extreme heat with zero ac and Dodge Ram can not produce part for the dealership to fix it. What is really unfair that original dealer tried again to charge us for something that it waste the problem. We would have paid for it and would have been back within an hour. The new dealer Peterson Dodge understood the problem and was honest with us that there is a lot more then a filter. It was me who requested to get a second opinion and get a way from Larry H Miller Dodge.

Trailer King RST 235/80R16: six of them on a triple axle boat trailer. Was towing a boat and experienced a blowout on the passenger rear trailer tire, of which we did not hit a pothole or strike debris. It bent the boat trailer fender and damaged several components of the trailer. It was identified by Discount Tire that the passenger side lead tire experienced belt separation, which is a manufacturer defect and was most likely the cause of the passenger side rear trailer tire to blow out and cause excessive damage to the trailer. There are numerous other customers of this tire who experienced significant blowouts on their trailer, which poses a safety risk to all who own trailers with these Trailer King RST tires and those who travel the roads with them. The belt separation was confirmed by a third-party tire shop recognized nationally. I submitted a claim for the blown out tire with the company manufacturer, and they claim it was not due to manufacturer defect. Unicorn tire does not accept responsibility for the manufacturer defect, even though it was confirmed by the company discount tire. These trailer tires are unsafe. Bottom line: two of six trailer tires that were two years old and had less than 3000 miles on them experienced belt separation, one of which had a significant blowout that could’ve caused serious accidents. This is not an isolated case as other reviews have shown these tires to be unreliable and unsafe disregard the VIN associated with this complaint as it would not accept my trailer VIN.

Bought truck brand new in 2019. I brought back to the dealership, replaced with the same brand as I was unaware of these issues. I now have 36,000 total miles on my truck and about 19,000 miles on this new set and the issue just occurred again. There is something wrong with this brad of tire that these belts continue to shift inside the tire and will eventually cause larger issues. The Bosch CP4 fuel pump internally disintegrated sending metal shavings throughout the fuel system. On the highway accelerating out of a toll both without warning, the truck lost almost all acceleration power and began to shudder. There weren't any preexisting warning lamps or messages. Any time after that when accelerating up to highway speeds quickly or attempting to maintain highway speeds the truck would lose acceleration and begin to shudder. When I took it to a mechanic, they informed me the CP4 fuel pump had "grenaded" and the whole fuel system needed to be replaced. If this had happened when merging into traffic or crossing at an intersection, I could have been hit because I couldn't accelerate as needed. The manufacturer (Ram) is aware of the malfunction and has issued recalls for the 2019 and 2020 years, but not 2018s which have the same exact part. The repairs have been completed on the truck and I have copies of the invoice.

At any time the vehicle will and can shut off and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. Let alone the air bag issues. It’s a huge huge safety issue. Please listen and read this. I care about others on the road. Being a victim of a head on collision, I take safety very seriously. Vehicle backed into a Chrysler town and country & caused major damage to the van, bc the break slipped on the dodge ram 3500. No air bags deployed. I’m not the owner I personally know the driver. I had the ABS recall repaired 3 years ago when Ram was refusing to acknowledge this as a defective product. I paid for this repair. Under the recall I'm elgiible for reimbursement but the company is refusing to reimburse me for the repair after I sent them an invoice showing proof of work and my payment. This can't stand. Please force them to issue a refund for the $100 I am owed.

Hello and good day, I purchased a 2018 DODGE RAM 3500 with 82k miles for $31k back in March 2024 @ Cambridge Truck located 5640 Glenn Hwy, Cambridge, OH 43725; Phone number 740-255-5200. My down payment was $8500 and my financial agreement was for $800 a month. My family and I were moving back to Connecticut and we needed a truck for all of our furniture/belongings, and for my fiancé's new landscaping business. On our way home the shifter wasn't shifting properly into gears but we still made it home, thank GOD. We contacted Capitol Garage Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM which was the closest Dodge. I brought the truck in for a diagnostic and the truck was diagnosed with a faulty/failed transmission. Parts were ordered back in July and expedited in September. I've been in contact with Cambridge Truck and I've been unsuccessful getting anywhere with Cambridge or Dodge even though I purchase an extended warranty the day of purchase. I was having a full blown anxiety attack the day of purchase as well, as I was overwhelmed. I have [XXX] and a [XXX]. I've made every payment including $400 a month for insurance for a vehicle I had on the road for a week. Not to mention I had to extend my Mercedes benz lease as I had no truck to rely on. My Mercedes mileage contract was broken and I was unable to recover my $15,000 down payment. I also had to pay $1200 in lease extension costs, and $800 for insurance. I finally had to purchase another car in October with all of had in my bank $3,700. The truck was for my fiancé's business which has been on hold for 10 mouths, another $100k we're out. This is a huge loss and I'm being ignored and offered nothing. The dealership is well aware of what I'm out as I've requested a refund several times via text to the sales team. After further investigation the 2018 Dodge RAM 3500 has many recalls since 2017. THIS TRUCK CAN'T BE FIXED, THERE'S NO REMEDY OR UPDATES AVAILABLE. I NEED A REFUND! I was driving in dense traffic at 55mph. The rear window suddenly, and without warning, exploded. Glass shards peppered my wife’s and my back neck. The window is protected by a headache rack (see pictures). My thought is the glass is improperly made, in that it should not explode; or improperly factory installed.

EARLY ON (BEFORE I NOTICED A RECURRING PROBLEM), WHILE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, THE REAR VIEW CAMERA DID NOT DISPLAY IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. AFTER SHIFTING TO FORWARD, THE REAR VIEW CAMERA DISPLAYED IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR SHOWING WHAT WAS BEHIND ME DURING THE DRIVE. AFTER THAT, (OCCASIONALLY) WHILE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, THE REAR VIEW CAMERA LOCATED IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR DOES NOT DISPLAY. AFTER RESEARCHING BLOWN FUSES AND SUCH (BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING), I FOUND I HAVE TO TURN THE TRUCK IGNITION OFF AND THEN BACK ON TO GET THE DISPLAY TO WORK. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE AND FINDING A RECALL NUMBERED: NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 18V398000, I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD BE ADJUSTED TO REFLECT (AT A MINIMUM OF DATE OF DATE OF MANUFACTURE OF MY VEHICLE) THE 2018 RAM 3500 AND ALL OTHER VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS RECALL.

Ram 3500 Larime Crew Cab Deisel with 47,800 miles. We were driving home from our seasonal campsite, (about a 2 hour trip on highway) and it began to rain (about 15 minutes into the trip) it continued to rain very hard at times the whole trip home. Around 30 minutes into our trip the ABS warning light, Check Engine light, & Traction Control light came on. I pulled to the shoulder of the road and waited for a lull in the rain. I then opened the hood and inspected to see if something was shorting out electrically. I couldn't see or smell anything, so we decided to continue on our way. We exited the highway and took non-highway route home. I did not notice any issues while braking or driving that concerned me enough to have it towed. I pulled the truck into the garage (under our house) and unloaded our belongings from the weekend. I went down to the garage about 2 hours later (the key fob was upstairs) when I walked behind the truck, the cargo light and interior lights came on. This didn't make sense to me because the key fob was not anywhere near the truck. It was still raining so I decided to disconnect the batteries (2 batteries on the Cummins) rather than put the truck outside in the rain. Didn't want to take the chance of burning my house down. This was the first time this has happened (7-16-2023) I research to see if anyone else had similar issues and found a considerable number of owners with this similar complaint. The vehicle has not been taken to the dealer as of this writing. Having to pull to the side of the highway during heavy rain, put my family and others at risk. Given the number of complaints that I was able to read, I would say these issues should warrant a recall.

On Sept 11, 2022, we experienced a heavy rain shower while traveling along I64 westbound in VA. My 7 year old daughter in the back seat informed me the headliner was wet in the rear driver side corner. Upon further inspection the passenger side headliner rear corner was also wet. I inspected the top of the ruck, no damage was noted and the seals all appeared to be in place. There is a Jereco High Rise cap on the bed of the truck and we were pulling a 38' travel trailer at the time. The posted speed limit was 70mph on the stretch of road where the rain was encountered, however we were traveling between 40-60 mph during the rain event. No immediate safety risk was present. However, I'm concerned water intrusion may eventually result in an electrical fire or failure of a required safety device. Should water find it's way into a hidden harness or other electrical component such as the CHMSL (VOQ 10968851) or factory subwoofer which is located below the area which leaked. The vehicle has not been inspected or repaired by a dealer as it is just out of warranty. I did report this to RAM via Ram trucks on-line owner's portal. No warning lamps, messages have been observed at this time.
