2015 Ram 3500
Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 178 complaints across the 8 model-year 2015 heavy-duty trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
What owners should know
Covers 2013–2018 · 6.7L Cummins diesel, 6.4L and 5.7L Hemi V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01
In 2013, Ram added diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to the 6.7L Cummins diesel, and in 2014 the 6.4L Hemi gas V8 joined the 5.7L Hemi. 2014 Ram 2500s also switched to coil springs in the rear.
We counted 5,984 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2013–2018 Ram 2500s and 3500s: 4,409 from diesel trucks, 1,154 from 6.4L Hemi trucks and 246 from 5.7L Hemi trucks (identified by VIN). Most of them are from 2017–2018 trucks, driven by the brake issue below. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Anti-lock brake (ABS) unit failures on 2017–2018 trucks are the most reported problem by far, and were recalled.
- The 6.7L Cummins in these years is generally well regarded. DEF heaters, NOx sensors and EGR coolers are the commonly reported repairs.
- Steering recalls cover the drag link and track bar brackets.
- A water pump recall on 2013–2017 diesels addresses a fire risk.
2017–2018: ABS and stability control failures
Brakes come up in 1,560 diesel and 505 6.4L Hemi complaints, mostly from 2017–2018 trucks. Owners describe ABS, traction control and "service electronic brake system" warning lights. Chrysler recalled these trucks because the ABS hydraulic control unit may fail, disabling anti-lock brakes and stability control (recall 24V896000). Many complaints say replacement parts took a long time to arrive.
When buying: confirm this recall is done. Any ABS or stability control warning light on the dash is a reason to walk away or get it fixed first.
Steering and front end
- The drag link can separate if a jam nut loosens on 2013–2018 trucks (recall 19V021000).
- Track bar frame bracket welds on some 2015 trucks (recall 16V559000).
- Front-end shake is reported far less than on older Rams, but still check the track bar, tie rods and ball joints.
6.7L Cummins
Generally considered a strong engine in these years. Commonly reported repairs:
- DEF heater failures that cause reduced power, especially in cold weather, and NOx and DEF quality sensors
- EGR cooler leaks (white smoke or coolant loss)
- Turbo actuator failures at higher mileage
- A water pump recall on 2013–2017 trucks with a certain brand of pump that can leak coolant (recall 17V562000)
6.4L Hemi
Owners on Ram forums discuss camshaft and lifter failures on the 6.4L, often announced by a ticking noise. A tick can also come from broken exhaust manifold bolts, which is a much cheaper fix. Have a mechanic diagnose any tick before buying.
Other recalls
Side curtain airbag inflators on 2016–2018 trucks (recalls 25V010000 and 25V592000), power tailgate latches, and a rear camera recall on 2018 trucks.
Before you buy

I am filing this report to highlight ongoing safety and warranty issues with my 2015 Dodge Ram 3500, which is severely impacted by Recall 67A. This recall was intended to address emissions tampering, involving significant obligations for Stellantis/Cummins Inc. under the emissions extended warranty, termed the "Special Extended Warranty." Since the completion of the recall in January 2024, my vehicle has been inoperable for a total of 148 days due to significant defects. The vehicle has required six service visits to address these issues, with the most recent visit occurring on October 31, 2024, when it was towed back to the dealership. Throughout this process, I have encountered a lack of effective communication from both Cummins and FCA, and my attempts to resolve these issues were largely ignored until I escalated the matter to federal authorities, including Randall Stone from the U.S. DOJ. The ongoing failure to address these defects has not only violated warranty obligations but also poses a risk to safety, as the vehicle remains inoperable. Impact of the Problem: The inability to use my vehicle has caused considerable disruption to my daily life, preventing me from performing essential tasks, including towing a camper and transporting heavy items. This situation has also led to significant emotional distress, given the prolonged nature of the issues and the lack of adequate responses from the manufacturer. Action Requested: I seek the NHTSA's assistance in investigating these ongoing issues with my vehicle and holding the manufacturer accountable for their failure to uphold warranty obligations and address safety concerns related to emissions defects.

humming from the hydroboost pump, actual issue is the high pressure steering line has a nylon tube inside the hose that breaks apart and moves throughout the system. Dodge had one revision of the hose on the early model years but this issue has gone unresolved. I am afraid if i cant get it fixed it may possibly cause the brakes or steering assistance to fail.

The output voltage to the Trailer Braking system is low, only 7.5 volts. Other owners have the same problem. From what I understand there is an issue with the computer that keeps the Original Equipment trailer brake controller from delivering full power at speeds below 30 MPH. This is a safety hazard in stop and go driving. There are many complaints about this same problem in the Ram Forumz. Ram should be able to do a software update to fix the problem. One of the posts in the forum stated that Ram has the software update available but will charge a lot of money for it. This is a safety issue and these trucks should be recalled to fix the problem.

At about 3,000 miles I noticed a periodical head light flicker and intermittent radio issues. Shortly after that the truck has presented with periodical brake issues. My front brakes parodically drag and get hot. Typically on one front side or the other. However on [XXX] my wife and I took the truck out for a drive and both front brakes began dragging and heated up. I had to be towed 40+ miles back home. Two of my neighbors can verify I've had issues with the brakes on multiple occasions for several years now. I've had to limp the truck home on several occasions while in town and in Feb. 2025 it put my wife and I in what a consider a dangerous situation by stranding us on the side of the highway. I don't remember any warning lamps coming on but I did a scan after I got the truck back home. B170-15, B210A-16, B222C, B2861-15, P2509 & P2560 were present. I used my scanner to delete the codes and reset the EMC but am a bit hesitant to take the truck out on the road. Note: The truck has experienced a weird and harsh vibration on back of truck as well. I stop, shut engine off - do a walk around but haven't been able to pinpoint anything. Crank engine back up and problem has seemingly resolved itself. I think it's possibly a brake issue as well. At present this truck has less than 11,000 miles on it. Yes, LOL, less than 11,000 miles. Calipers and pads are in excellent functioning order. Fluid is easily pushed back into reservoir with no restrictions and no apparent degradation of flexible lines. I considered the brake fluid might have moisture built up in the system so I had a complete fluid replacement done but problem has persisted.I did read there's a recall on the the HCU/ABS unit and my truck seems to be in that category but haven't received anything from FCA. [XXX] Your attention and assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2015 Ram 3500. While attempting to have an alignment performed, the contact was informed that the steering drag link and the tie rod were both cracked. The failure caused rapid, premature wear on the tire. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V021000 (Steering); and believed that the welding that was performed in the recall repair had directly caused the current failure. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where the technicians diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the previous recall repair made it impossible to perform a proper wheel alignment. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 193,000.

There was a recall forced by the NTSB for a condition where the track bar adjustment nut would come loose and the truck would lose steering. The recall on the track bar was rectified by the dealer by welding the nut on the track bar. Now that the nut has been welded a proper alignment can not be preformed. There is no longer adjustment available due to the welded nut. The only way to properly fix this is to replace the track bar. I have had many communications with ram (stellantis) and they refuse to remedy this as they tell me they have complied with the NTSB’s resolution.

The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH in the left lane, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle simultaneously went into LIMP Mode. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway. The contact was able to continue driving, but the vehicle failed to exceed 5 MPH. Upon arriving to the residence, the vehicle was scanned, and it was determined that the turbo charger actuator had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact purchased an aftermarket part and repaired the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted. The contact later became aware that the failure was related to Chrysler Extended Warranty Coverage Number: X99; however, the contact had not received a notification from the manufacturer. The contact requested reimbursement from the manufacturer; however, the reimbursement was denied because the vehicle was not repaired by a dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

After I brought my truck in for recall Y26 they inspected the studs and said they were fine (not stretched which is what the recall is for). I took a trip and put 6,700 after the inspection and the dealer re-torqued the wheels. When I got back there seemed to be something wrong with the brakes and so I brought it back to the same dealer that inspected it before and verified the studs were not stretched, now found that the pads and rotors were damaged and the studs were studs now stretched. No problem before the recall but after the recall and new torque for the wheels the studs are stretched. Dodge said they will pay for the studs to be replaced but not the brakes. The brakes were fine before. If it were just the pads I would understand that this could be normal wear but the rotors being destroyed only on the wheels that now had stretched studs does not make any sense and given that it was inspected beforehand and only after the new torque did the studs stretch and damage the rotors it seems like they may not be fixing the issue that the recall was originally issued for, in fact, they may have made the problem worse. The representative from Dodge said they have not had any other complaints so the brake damage must not have been caused by the stretched studs.

THE TUCK HAS A HORRIBLE LAG IN THE THROTTLE RESPONSE. WHEN TRYING TO PULL OUT INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC THE TRUCK LAGS MORE THAN IT SHOULD. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT IT NEW WITH 16 MILES ON IT. IF YOU PRESS THE PEDAL MORE THAN HALF DOWN FROM A STOP YOU CAN COUNT TO 30 BEFORE IT ACTUALLY STARTS MOVING. THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE TIMES WHERE THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE BEEN READING FORUMS ABOUT THIS ISSUES AND HAVE COME UP WITH 2 CAUSES. 1 THE THROTTLE CONTROL PROGRAMING IS SET EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE WHICH WILL CAUSE THIS. 2 THE ONE THAT ALMOST EVERYONE IS REPORTING IS THAT THE DPF REGEN SYSTEM IS CAUSING TOO MUCH BACK PRESSURE. PEOPLE ARE REPORTING THAT WHEN THEY DELETE THE EXHAUST AND EGR OFF THE TRUCK IT GETS ITS POWER BACK. THESE SYSTEMS NEVER SEEM TO COMPLETELY CLEAN OUT AND ALL WISE HAS HIGH BACK PRESSURE.

WHEN ACCELERATING (EITHER FROM A STOP OR A ROLLING STOP) AND THEN BRAKING AND THEN ACCELERATING AGAIN, THE ENGINE WILL HESITATE. SOME CALL THIS "DEAD PEDAL" BUT I FEEL IT'S DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT LEAVES VULNERABLE IN TRAFFIC TO A COLLISION. IT'S HAPPENED TO ME NUMEROUS TIMES AND AGAIN TODAY. I WAS AT A 4 WAY STOP AND PROCEEDED TO ACCELERATE WHEN IT WAS MY TURN, ABOUT 1/3 WAY INTO THE INTERSECTION, A VEHICLE TRAFFIC IGNORED THE STOP SIGN AND ATTEMPTED TO CROSS MY LINE OF TRAVEL. I HAD TO BREAK AND THEN IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATE AND THE TRUCK HESITATED WHICH LEFT ME IN THE INTERSECTION. IF THE OTHER VEHICLE HAD BEEN TRAVELING AT A FASTER RATE, IT WOULD HAVE T-BONED ME. AS IT WAS, THE OTHER DRIVER WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER HIS VEHICLE AROUND ME. TO ME, THIS ISN'T A DELAY IN WHICH THE TURBO SPOOLS UP TO HELP DELIVER POWER. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE THE THROTTLE IS DEAD HOWEVER THE TRUCK IS STILL RUNNING. THE HESITATION CAN LAST ABOUT A SECOND OR SO BUT IN THAT TIME, I FEEL THE TRUCK IS UNSAFE.

THE NEW DODGE RAM EQUIPPED WITH CUMMINS DIESEL EXPERIENCE A DEAD PEDAL, OR PEDAL DELAY WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL 3/4 TO FULL THROTTLE. THIS POSES A SERIOUS RISK WHEN NEEDING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY, OR MOVE THE VEHICLE UNDER EMERGENCY CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS HAPPENS UNDER ALL CONDITIONS: STOPPED, ROLLING, UNDER ACCELERATION ETC. IF YOU PUSH THE PEDAL TOO FAR THE TRUCK WILL NOT RESPOND TO OPERATOR COMMANDS AND WILL TAKE 1.5-2 SECONDS TO START PICKING UP SPEED. THIS IS A SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED. THERE IS NOT EXCUSE FOR A VEHICLE NOT RESPONDING TO DRIVER INPUT. MANUFACTURE CLAIMS "TURBO LAG", THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. YOU CAN BUILD TURBO BOOST, MONITORED ON THE VEHICLE GAUGE, THEN PRESS THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, THE TRUCK WILL NOT RESPOND FOR 1.5 TO 2 SECONDS. NEXEN ROADIAN HTX RH5 LT235R/80-17 LR E. RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAS STARTED TO HAVE AN INTERNAL ISSUE. THE TIRE HAS "CROWNED" ON THE TREAD LINE. MEANING IT HAS AN ARC ON TREAD AREA FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND IS HIGHER IN THE CENTER. VEHICLE VIBRATES WHILE DRIVING IT BETWEEN 40 TO 70 MPH. ALL TIRES WERE ROTATED AT ABOUT 6,500 MILES. THE VEHICLE IS AT 7,900 MILES CURRENTLY. THE VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS HAD SOME SHAKING TO IT SINCE IT WAS NEW. IT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. I WON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH A WARRANTY CLAIM. THESE TIRES SHOULD BE BANNED FROM US DOT APPROVAL AND FCA SHOULD BE FINED HEVAVELY FOR BEING ALLOWED TO PUT NEXEN TIRES ON IT'S TRUCKS PERIOD. ALL OWNERS SHOULD BE GIVEN CREDIT TOWARDS PURCHASING REPLACEMENT TIRES. THERE ARE MANY FORUMS WITH VARIOUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE NEXEN TIRES BEING INSTALLED ON RAM TRUCKS. FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND FELLOW RAM OWNERS THE NEXEN TIRES SHOULD BE BANNED FROM ENTERING THE USA EITHER VIA OEM CHOICE OR ANY RETAILER OR COMMERCIAL SELLER. THESE TIRES HAVE AN EARLY 2014 DATE CODE. I'LL BE PURCHASING A NICE NEW PAIR OF BRIDGESTONE TIRES FOR MY TRUCK.

TAKATA RECALL WHEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY OR FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS OF 65 TO 80 MPH THE WHOLE TRUCK BEGINS TO VIBRATE.HAVE GOTTEN IT CHECKED MECHANICALLY FOR FAULTS.TIRES HAVE BEEN CHECKED AS WELL AS STEERING COMPONENTS AND SUSPENSION AND EVERYTHING IS IN GOOD SHAPE.WAS TOLD THAT ITS NORMAL FOR A 2015 RAM 3500 DUALLY TO VIBRATE SO MUCH .ITS NOT.THERE ABSOLUTELY NO READON WHY A NEWISH TRUCK SHOULD VIBRATE SO MUCH THAT IT FEELS LIKE ITS GOING TO FALL APART ON ITS OWN.ITS NOT NORMAL AND ALL THE PEOPLE ON THE FORUMS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALERS THAT IT IS NORMAL.IT IS A DRIVING HAZARD THAT ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE DODGE HAS LAWSUITS ON ITS FRONT DOOR FOR NEGLICENCE ON THEIR PART FOR THE BAD VIBRATIONS MAKING BOLTS FALL OFF AND CAUSING A WRECK.
Safety ratings
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings from government crash tests. Ratings can differ by cab style and 2WD/4WD.
NHTSA hasn't published star ratings for this truck. Many heavy-duty pickups aren't included in NHTSA's crash-test program, so this doesn't mean the truck is unsafe.
