2012 Ram 3500

Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

About NHTSA's data for this year: For 2011–2012, NHTSA files Ram 3500 owner complaints together with the Ram 2500, so these complaint numbers cover both trucks.

What owners should know

Covers 2010–2012 · 6.7L Cummins diesel and 5.7L Hemi V8 gas · Updated 2026-10-01

The first heavy-duty trucks sold under the Ram brand. Engines are the 6.7L Cummins diesel and the 5.7L Hemi gas V8. Diesels in these years use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR but no diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which arrived in 2013.

We counted 758 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2010–2012 Ram 2500s and 3500s: 510 from diesel trucks and 166 from Hemi trucks (identified by VIN). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Steering parts are the most frequently reported problem, and the left tie rod was recalled.
  • Diesel emissions parts (DPF, EGR, turbo actuator) are the most commonly reported engine repairs.
  • Diesel fuel heater wiring was recalled for a fire risk.
  • Hemi trucks: ticking from exhaust manifold bolts or lifters.

Steering and front end

Steering parts come up in 116 complaints (about 1 in 6). Chrysler recalled these trucks because the left tie rod assembly may break (recall 13V529000), along with an earlier steering linkage recall on 2010–2011 trucks (11V350000). Front-end shake is reported less often than on the 2003–2009 trucks, but still check for it.

When buying: confirm the tie rod recalls are done, check the steering linkage and track bar for play, and hit bumps at highway speed.

6.7L Cummins

Without DEF, these engines run richer to control emissions, which creates more soot. Repair sources commonly report:

  • DPF clogging and frequent "regeneration" (exhaust cleaning) cycles, which are worse with short trips and idling
  • EGR valve and cooler problems
  • Turbo actuator failures, often after 100,000 miles, with codes for boost control

Chrysler recalled 2010–2014 diesels because the diesel fuel heater's electrical connectors may overheat and leak fuel, a fire risk (recall 14V635000).

Many of these trucks have had their emissions systems removed ("deleted"). That can cause inspection and legal problems depending on where you live.

5.7L Hemi

Owners commonly report a ticking noise. It can come from broken exhaust manifold bolts (a cheaper fix) or from lifter or camshaft wear (expensive). Have a mechanic diagnose any tick.

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 2012 Ram 3500. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • Left tie rod can break

    Dealer (recall)

Signs: Loose or wandering steering, clunks, or play in the steering linkage.

Fix: Covered by Chrysler recalls. Many owners also upgrade to a heavy-duty tie rod and drag link.

May be covered free by recall 13V529000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 6.7L Cummins turbo actuator failure

    Moderate DIY

Signs: Low power, boost control codes such as P00AF.

Fix: Replace or recalibrate the turbo actuator. Cleaning soot from the turbo vanes sometimes helps.

  • 6.7L Cummins EGR and DPF problems

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Frequent exhaust cleaning cycles, EGR codes, low power.

Fix: Clean or replace the EGR valve, and have the DPF cleaned or replaced. Highway driving helps the DPF clean itself.

  • Diesel fuel heater fire risk

    Dealer (recall)

    Signs: Often no warning.

Fix: Covered by a Chrysler recall for the fuel heater's electrical connectors.

May be covered free by recall 14V635000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 5.7L Hemi exhaust ticking

    Hard DIY

Signs: Ticking that's loudest on a cold start and fades as the engine warms up.

Fix: Usually broken exhaust manifold bolts. Replace the bolts and gasket. A tick that stays when warm can be a lifter, which needs a shop.

We purchased our 2012 Dodge Ram heavy duty with tow package new. At just over 152000 miles, the engine started knocking while on vacation. We were not towing at the time. We put in injector cleaner to try and help the knocking. During our vacation, we were on the freeway when we suddenly lost power, the service engine light popped on, and the engine died. We were literally driving one minute and the next were trying to get out of the traffic lane with no control. We restarted the engine, the knocking had stopped and power was restored. Two days later, another episode of power decrease but with no engine service light. We used premium gas, injector cleaner and listened for the knocking that came and went, to drive home. We were told by our local dealership it is a lifter failure and the truck needs a replacement engine.

Exhaust Manifold on passenger side is leaking. It has a broken bolt due to manifold warping. This is causing exhaust to leak into the cab.

    • Filed May 2022

The exhaust manifold bolts on both sides of the engine warp due to two different metals being put together under heat. Steel and aluminum expand at different temperatures. This causes the bolts to break off of the exhaust manifold creating an exhaust leak into the engine bay. Yes, this can be inspected upon request. The safety of myself and the general public is at risk due to the exhaust leak into the engine bay being pulled into the cab via the heating or airconditioning system. The exhaust fumes are pulled into the cab of the truck via the heating and airconditioning system. When running, the truck has a very noticeable smell inside the cab. It has caused me headaches as well. This poses a risk to the public if the driver were to pass out from said fumes. The problem can be reproduced and is a known issue with Dodge. It is very well documented online that this problem happens to nearly all Dodge Ram trucks. It has never been recalled because Dodge says its not a "safety" concern. This is very much so a safety issue. The components have been inspected by others, and verified as broken. I will not take it to a dealership to have it inspected as they want to charge 150$/hr to diagnose something that even they recognize as a known issue. There were no warning lamps, messages or any visible indication of this problem. A loud ticking noise and a strong smell of exhaust fumes are what brought the issues to attention.

My Dodge Ram 2500, 2012 Hemi engine started making a ticking sound so got a tune up. The machinic changed the spark plugs and distributors around after I complained. Nothing he was able to do enable the truck to function properly. I spoke with the Dodge dealership, the spoken informed me that when Dodge merged with MERCEDE the problem persisted and to this date a fix was not provided. I spoke with other Dodge owner who experience the same problem. The engine was not functioning properly because of internal damage. The cost of repair would cost between $8K and $10K to replace or repair the engine. The dealership stated that NHTSA nor Dodge have provided a fix and that the problem still persist to this day.

I HAVE MY MECHANIC LOOK AT IT AND SAY THE VIBRATION CAUSED MY BOLTS THAT HOLD THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT TO THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL SHEARED OFF AND THE SHAFT GOT LODGED INTO THE GROUND CAUSING IT TO BREAK THE TRANSFER CASE IN HALF. FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD THIS IS MORE OF AN ISSUE THAN RAM WANTS TO LEAD ON. TRANSFER CASES ARE HARD TO GET AHOLD OF SAME AS THE DRIVE SHAFT. SO FAR I HAVE GOTTEN THE SLAVE CYLINDER MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED FOR 150 DOLLARS. I'VE BEEN QUOTED UPWARDS TO 2000 DOLLARS FOR A REMANUFACTURED TRANSFER CASE. SINCE THEY DON'T COME WITH THE MOTOR THAT IS ANOTHER 300 DOLLARS. THEN THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT COST AROUND 700 TO 750 DOLLARS. TO PAY MY MECHANIC FOR THE WORK HE IS GOING TO DO IT FOR 500 DOLLARS. A TOTAL OF 3650 WITH ANOTHER 150 TO TOW IT BACK FROM THE SHOP SINCE MY INSURANCE REFUSED TO DO THAT FOR ME. A TOTAL OF 3800 DOLLARS BECAUSE THE CV JOINT WENT OUT WITHOUT ANY WARNINGS SIGNS.

When driving at highway speed, if I hit the seam between the road and a bridge and it is not smooth my truck goes into a, "Death wobble." The steering wheel and the whole truck shakes uncontrollably. I can barely keep it in the road. It will only stop when the vehicle slows below 30mph. This problem started about 48,000 miles, I only have a little over 56,000 now. I have changed the stabilizer, got new tires and an alignment. I will be taking it to a mechanic on the 17th but I really believe the manufacture should have a recall on this vehicle. It is very dangerous. I am not the only person to own one of these trucks and this happens to.

AT APPRX.38,000 MI,ON A FREEWAY AT 65 MPH, RAN OVER A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD THE TRUCK BEGAN SHAKING VIOLENTLY, AS IF IT WAS GOING TO FLY APART.TOOK FOOT OF THE GAS, HIT THE BRAKES UNTIL SLOWED TO APPROX.. 40 MPH. I'M A SMALL FEMALE IT WAS ALL I COULD DO TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE OFF RAMP. THIS WAS NOT A NORMAL TIRE OUT OF BALANCE SITUATION.IF SO IT WOULD DO THAT CONSISTENTLY. A FEW WEEKS LATER IT OCCURRED WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING IT.HE'S DEFINITION IS LIKE A BUCKING BRONCO. WE PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM THE DEALERSHIP LAKE NORMAN CHRYSLER DODGE. TOOK THE TRUCK IN WE THOROUGHLY EXPLAINED TO THE SERVICE WRITER HOW DANGEROUS THIS IS, IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. HE WROTE IT UP AS A VERY BAD VIBRATION. THEIR FINDINGS WAS A STEERING STABALIZER AND REPLACED IT. MILEAGE WAS 42722. IT DOESN'T DO THIS WITH EVERY BUMP YOU HIT. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVEN OFTEN. NOW ONLY A FEW HUNDRED MILES LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN TWICE. BOTH TIMES WHILE TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY 60 TO 65 MPH. WHEN YOU'RE ON A FREEWAY AND A TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK IS BEHIND YOU, IT IS LIFE THREATENING TO TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS AND HIT THE BRAKES. THE TRUCK IS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN THERE FOR 1 1/2 WEEKS. THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WE HAVE DISCOVERED THIS IS CALLED THE DEATH WOBBLE AND DODGE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND HAS NEVER SOLVED THE PROBLEM.THIS HAS BEEN A MAJOR PROBLEM ON THE DODGE RAM 2500 AND JEEP WRANGLERS. NORMALLY IT OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS 150,000 MILES ON IT OR BETTER WHEN PARTS HAVE WORN OUT, NOT AT 40,000.IF THE DEALER SAYS THAT ALL THE PARTS AND BUSHINGS ARE GOOD, IF SO, THEN THIS IS A DODGE RAM DESIGN FLAW. THERE ARE REPORTS ALL OVER THE INTERNET OF OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM AND HOW DANGEROUS IT IS. WE PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE AND NOW CAN'T EVEN DRIVE IT.

MY FIRST THOUGHT AFTER BEING COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY BY THE FACT THAT A LIGHTLY USED TRUCK THAT HADN'T EVEN BEEN DRIVEN COULD SPONTANEOUSLY CATCH ITSELF ON FIRE WAS THAT THANK GOODNESS THE TRUCK WAS PARKED OUTSIDE AND NOT IN MY GARAGE. WHEN I GOT TO MY TRUCK I SAW THAT THE FUSE BOX WAS MELTED AS WELL AS ALL THE WIRES LEADING TO AND FROM THE FUSE BOX. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO A LOCAL RAM DEALERSHIP AND I CONTACTED RAM AND CHRYSLER SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS WHO REFUSED TO PROVIDE ME WITH ANY DETAILS OTHER THAN THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY.

I purchased a pair of Treadwright warden tires for the rear of my wife’s truck. In less than 100 miles the tread separated from the casing on one of the tires. I caught it before it completely blew out and have pictures. The replacement they sent has a blown sidewall. I mounted it and a bubble started to form that was 1/2” high and 3” around with just 20psi, operating PSI for the tire is 80PSI. I immediately stopped inflation and contacted Treadwright. They tried to convince me that it was “overlap” and safe to use. I told them it is not over lap and showed them multiple pictures of the tire from different angles to prove it has a blown belt. They still insisted it was a serviceable tire. It’s not and I have pictures. I’ve used Treadwright tires for the last 5 or so years. Over the last year and a half to 2 years I’ve received 6 defective tires. All defects were fatal defects, all being broken belts. That’s 1 out of every 4.5 tires purchased. If I’ve received that many fault tires I can be the only one. On top of that the insistence of Treadwright trying to convince people to use fatally defective tires is negligent, reckless and dangerous.

WHILE DRIVING MY TRUCK ON THE INTERSTATE AND PULLING A TRAVEL TRAILER, THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE HAD A BLOWOUT WITHOUT WARNING. MY TRUCK AND TRAILER MOMENTARILY SWERVED BUT I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL AND PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I HEARD THE REMAINING TIRE TREAD STRIKE THE WHEEL WELL REPEATEDLY BEFORE I COULD STOP THE TRUCK. THE BLOWOUT CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FENDER, WHEEL WELL LINER, BATTERY, HEADLIGHT BRACKET, BUMPER AND WIRING HARNESS. ASIDE FROM THE BODY DAMAGE, NUMEROUS WIRES WERE TORN AND RENDERED THE TRUCK INOPERABLE. DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE, MY INSURANCE CARRIER DEEMED THE VEHICLE A TOTAL LOSS. I'M SHOCKED AND DISMAYED THAT THE TIRE FAILED. THE TIRES HAD A 60,000-MILE WARRANTY ON THEM, BUT HAD BEEN IN SERVICE FOR LESS THAN 22,000 MILES. I CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE BEFORE STARTING THE TRIP. MY TPMS DID NOT INDICATE A LOSS OF PRESSURE DURING MY TRAVELS. THE ROAD WAS FLAT AND IN GOOD CONDITION. I DID NOT STRIKE ANY OBJECTS ON THE ROAD. BECAUSE I WAS PULLING A TRAILER, MY SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 50-55 MPH. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION AFTER THE BLOWOUT, I NOTICED A LARGE HOLE IN THE TIRE CASING. I PRESUME THAT THE TIRE DETERIORATED FROM THE INSIDE OUT, AND ULTIMATELY RESULTED IN FAILURE. I'M LUCKY THAT TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND THAT I WAS NOT NEAR THE EDGE OF A CLIFF OR MOUNTAIN ROAD. ALTHOUGH I LOST MY TRUCK, THIS BLOWOUT COULD HAVE HAD MUCH MORE SERIOUS AND DIRE CONSEQUENCES FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS.

R03 (REPLACES L25) WIRELESS IGNITION NODE (WIN) MODULE WIN MODULE FAILURE. WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN MOTION, THE ENGINE AND POWER SHUTS OFF TO THE VEHICLE, CAUSING LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKING POWER. THIS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THIS HAS BEEN RECALLED DUE TO THE SAME SITUATION ON MULTIPLE OTHER DODGE/CHRYSLER VEHICLES THAT HAVE THE SAME WIN MODULE PART/PART# AS MY 2012 RAM. 'THE WIRELESS IGNITION NODE (WIN) MODULE ON THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE UNINTENTIONAL MOVEMENT OF THE FREQUENCY OPERATED BUTTON IGNITION KEY, OR FOBIK, FROM THE 'ON' TO THE 'ACCESSORY' POSITION WHILE DRIVING. THIS COULD CAUSE UNINTENDED ENGINE SHUT OFF AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.' HTTPS://STATIC.NHTSA.GOV/ODI/RCL/2016/RCMN-16V240-9929.PDF

I WAS DRIVING AT 60 MPH WHEN I HAD TO COME TO A STOP BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC AND THE THROTTLE APPARENTLY DID NOT DISENGAGE CAUSING ME TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES HARD. ONLY AFTER A FEW SECONDS WHEN I STOPPED DID THE VEHICLE DOWNSHIFT AND RETURNED TO IDLE FUNCTION.THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE AND SINCE THIS INCIDENT.THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO IDLED HIGH AT TIMES AND WILL NOT SLOW DOWN WHEN REMOVING PRESSURE TO THE FUEL PEDAL.IT IS AS IF THE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY STICKS WHICH IS AN APPARENT ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION.THIS IS AND HAS BECOME A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE MADE A COMPLAINT BEFORE AND CONTACTED DODGE RAM ABOUT THIS WITH NO SATISFACTION.I WILL BE DRAFTING A REGISTERED LETTER TO NHTS BOARD AND DODGE RAM RELEASING LIABILITY FROM THIS ISSUE UNTIL IT IS RESOLVED. I ALSO HAVE A RECALL ABOUT THE FUEL FILTER HEATER FROM DECEMBER AND STILL THE MANUFACTURE HAS NOT PROVIDED THE PARTS SO AS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WHICH CAN CAUSE FIRES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. *TR

DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLES IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK SLAMMED ON BRAKES. I WAS ROUGHLY 30 FT BEHIND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES AND THE PEDAL FELT SPONGY BEFORE GOING TO THE FLOOR. THE TIRES DID NOT LOCK UP, AND THE TRUCK SLOWED 20MPH IN ABOUT 30 FT. THE TRUCK MADE IMPACT WITH A CHEVROLET TAHOE AT 50 MPH. THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AND THE SEATBELT FAILED TO LOCK, THROWING MY KNEES INTO THE DASH. THE CHEVROLET TAHOE WAS TOTALED. THE CURRENT ESTIMATE TO REPAIR THE RAM IS $5,448. THE BUMPER, DRIVER FENDER, GRILLE, AND HOOD WERE DAMAGED. UPON REMOVING THOSE ITEMS THE SHOP FOUND ALMOST EVERY BRACKET IN THE FRONT END HAD BEEN BROKEN AND THE FRAME HORNS BENT UPWARDS FROM THE COLLISION. THE IMPACT WAS HARD ENOUGH TO BREAK A RATCHET STRAP IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK, SENDING A LADDER THAT I WAS CARRYING INTO THE CAB CORNER, LEAVING A SOFTBALL SIZED DENT. WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE AWAY FROM THE INCIDENT AND THE BRAKES WERE FUNCTIONAL ON THE TRIP TO THE BODY SHOP, HOWEVER ANY ATTEMPT TO DEPRESS THE PEDAL RAPIDLY WOULD RESULT IN A SPONGY PEDAL. MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS 81,110. RAM WAS CONTACTED AND AFTER A WEEK OF BACK AND FORTH RAM AGREED TO SEND SOMEONE TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A FAULT IN THE TRUCK.

THE SPRAY NOZZLES ON ALL DODGES ARE BREAKING WAY BEFORE THEY SHOULD. THE HARD PLASTIC NOZZLE BREAKS WHERE IT IS ATTACHED TO THE FLUID TUBE. THIS MAKES IT SO THE NOZZLE DOES NOT SPRAY THE WINDSHIELD TO CLEAN IT WITH THE WIPERS. MY TRUCK IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND BOTH NOZZLES HAVE BEEN REPLACED.
