Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 633 complaints across the 6 model-year 2017 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

My son was driving my truck when the power steering went out and felt like it was locked up. Luckily, he was not near a major road but became stuck on the side of the road. Now being told that this is common with this truck. Told that the entire steering rack now has to be replaced, $4,000.00. This is not right and could have seriously hurt my son or my family.

    • Filed Sep 2026

Vehicle experienced a sudden loss and binding of electric power steering (EPS) assist, creating an unreasonable safety hazard requiring excessive manual effort to control. The dashboard power steering warning lamp is now actively illuminated. While this 2017 Ram 1500 is currently excluded from automated VIN recall lists (S19/VB9), physical inspection confirms it contains the identical contaminated circuit board architecture and part design under federal investigation in NHTSA probe RQ 23-003 (covering 2013–2024 Ram power steering failures). Manufacturer is incorrectly denying coverage based strictly on a narrow VIN rollout while identical hardware fails in the field. While no vehicle crash occurred, the sudden loss of power assist and steering binding requires severe physical force to control, directly aggravating driver physical strain and chronic back pain. Component is available for inspection.

The power steering completely stopped working during normal driving conditions. It is not a blown fuse, as those have been checked. My safety and the safety of others on the road was impaired by the sudden loss of power steering. The warning of servicing power steering only came on AFTER the power steering was lost. There were no prior symptoms that would have let us know there was any kind of issue with the steering.

    • Filed Feb 2026 · Also filed under Power Train, Vehicle Speed Control

I am reporting a persistent safety defect involving loss of intended drivability in my 2017 Ram 1500 with an 8-speed automatic transmission. For the past 3 years, on almost every use of the vehicle, the transmission enters an abnormal operating state where it becomes stuck in a single gear (most often 3rd or 4th) and will not upshift or downshift. When this occurs, the vehicle experiences reduced ability to accelerate and loss of normal drivability. The condition does not resolve while driving and requires me to pull over, shut the vehicle off, and restart it to restore operation. This defect has occurred multiple times at freeway speeds, requiring me to pull over onto the highway shoulder due to loss of vehicle function. A vehicle that cannot reliably shift or accelerate at highway speed presents a clear safety hazard to the driver and surrounding traffic. Requiring a stop-and-restart is not a safe or reasonable mitigation strategy in real-world traffic conditions. The issue occurs more frequently when the vehicle is cold, indicating a predictable and repeatable failure mode, not driver error or misuse. I have had to alter normal driving behavior, including extended warm-up periods and avoiding highways, to reduce risk. I was informed by repair facilities that this is a known issue related to transmission control module (TCM) software, and that Chrysler has issued Technical Service Bulletin(s) describing TCM software updates to address abnormal shifting and drivability behavior. The existence of these TSBs demonstrates manufacturer knowledge of the failure mode and a defined corrective action, yet the issue has not been addressed as a safety recall. I am submitting this complaint so the issue can be evaluated based on objective safety criteria. A vehicle that routinely loses drivability and requires emergency stops on freeways warrants formal safety investigation.

To Whom It May Concern at NHTSA, I am filing this safety complaint regarding a defective ABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) on my 2017 Ram 1500 TRADESMAN CREW CAB 4x4 5.7L Hemi with approximately 92,000 miles. DEFECT DESCRIPTION: The ABS HCU has failed, resulting in complete loss of anti-lock braking, traction control, electronic stability control, 4WD and cruise control. This is an identical failure mode to the defect addressed under NHTSA Recall 24V-896, which covered 2017-2018 Ram 2500-5500 trucks. My 2017 Ram 1500 uses the same or substantially similar HCU component and is experiencing the identical failure. SAFETY RISK: The loss of ABS, ESC, 4WD and traction control significantly increases the risk of a crash, particularly in adverse weather conditions. This is not a minor inconvenience — it is a serious safety hazard that FCA/Stellantis has already acknowledged in heavier-duty Ram platforms. MANUFACTURER KNOWLEDGE: FCA was aware of this defect as early as 2016 based on warranty claims and customer complaints. Despite issuing Recall 24V-896 for heavier Ram trucks with the same HCU failure, FCA has failed to extend recall coverage to the 2017 Ram 1500, leaving thousands of owners without remedy. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Repair estimates range from $1,200 to $2,000. The part (OEM #XXX) remains on backorder or engineering hold, making timely repair impossible through normal channels. REQUESTED ACTION: I respectfully request that NHTSA: 1. Open a formal investigation into the 2017 Ram 1500 ABS HCU failures for thousands of trucks, 2. Compel FCA/Stellantis to expand Recall 24V-896 or issue a new recall to include the 2017 Ram 1500 3. Require FCA to reimburse owners who have already paid for this repair out of pocket I am happy to provide any additional documentation, repair invoices, or diagnostic reports upon request, or 4. Compel FCA/Stellantis to purchase defective owner vehicles at fair market value.

My truck all of sudden put up the ABS light, traction control light, emergency brake light and loss of cruise control. Had it test at an O'reilly and has a C-2200-49 ABS module failure internal module failure.

    • Filed Sep 2026 · Also filed under Service Brakes

The ABS/brake warning lights illuminated on my 2017 Ram 1500. I have not noticed a difference in normal braking performance. Diagnostic testing identified codes C2200-49 related to an internal ABS module electronic failure and C0020-01, ABS pump motor control/general electrical failure. I was advised that the ABS module and/or hydraulic control unit may require replacement. I am concerned that the ABS system may not function properly when needed. I am also aware that certain 2017-2018 Ram 2500 and other heavy-duty Ram models have been recalled under NHTSA Campaign 24V-896 for HCU failure resulting in loss of ABS, stability control and traction control. I have found reports of similar ABS failures involving Ram 1500 vehicles, which are not included in that recall. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can evaluate whether this represents a broader safety defect.

The part remains on backorder or engineering hold, making timely repair impossible through normal channels. REQUESTED ACTION: I respectfully request that NHTSA: 1. Open a formal investigation into the 2017 Ram 1500 ABS HCU failures for thousands of trucks, 2. Compel FCA/Stellantis to expand Recall 24V-896 or issue a new recall to include the 2017 Ram 1500, 3. Require FCA to reimburse owners who have already paid for this repair out of pocket. I am happy to provide any additional documentation, repair invoices, or diagnostic reports upon request, or 4. Compel FCA/Stellantis to purchase defective owner vehicles at fair market value.

While driving on I70 in downtown Indianapolis, I was alerted by a semi driver that something was wrong with my vehicle, or he was attempting to get my attention for something. Once he got my attention, I could see a trail of liquid pouring out from behind me. Thankfully, I was able to get over and get off the highway. I tried to get somewhere safe, but eventually the truck sputtered out. We have now learned that the fuel tank straps failed, and since then we now knoww Chrysler is aware that they are faulty, and that this is something Chrysler is aware of and they have an extension warranty X75 for the 2017. However, they do not have a recall. And I have been attempting to handle things with them directly. They have agreed to take care of the faulty fuel tank straps, but they are not responsible for any consequential damage. I could have been killed that day, if traffic was more severe, or someone flicked a cigarette and it hit the fuel. I could have burnt alive in the truck. Chrysler keeps sending me up the chain, and i'm just told they only owe for the fuel straps. So far I have missed work, had to pay out of pocket for a rental and there is at minimum of $2000 in repair and $200 in out of pocket tows.

The front fuel tank strap mount rusted out causing the fuel tank to drop and dangle by only the rear strap. The resulting pressure from the tank pushed the, now detached, front strap onto the rear drive shaft and gouging it to un-safe condition. Thankfully it did not wear completely through the drive shaft as seen in other reports. This is a know issue with these trucks. There is a extended warranty campaign but this needs to be a full on recall. And replacing items damaged from this failure ie drive shaft.

Also potentially run out of fuel at anytime and not being able to move vehicle to a safe location. Even the side of the road. Out of gas. Can not move at all. Dealership has replaced twice already the fuel level sensor. Multiple vehicles I’ve seen with this problem. Could leave someone in a dangerous situation.

I am filing a formal safety complaint regarding my 2017 Ram 1500. The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) module has been non-functional for approximately one year. I have been informed the replacement part has been on national backorder for nearly two years, with no clear timeline for repair. The ABS system is a critical safety component designed to prevent wheel lock-up, maintain steering control during emergency braking, and reduce stopping distances in wet or icy conditions. Without a functioning ABS module, the vehicle is at increased risk of skidding, loss of steering control, and extended stopping distances. In a full-size pickup truck, this creates a substantial risk of serious injury or death to occupants and others on the road. Additionally, related systems such as traction control and electronic stability control may be compromised. Online owner forums indicate this is an ongoing issue affecting many Stellantis-built vehicles, including Ram 1500 models. While recalls have been issued for other model years for braking-related defects, no recall has been issued for the 2017 model year despite similar failures. It is unacceptable for a manufacturer to leave owners operating vehicles with a known safety defect while critical braking components remain unavailable for extended periods. If a safety system cannot be repaired within a reasonable timeframe, regulatory intervention is warranted. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a recall is necessary. Should an accident, injury, or fatality occur due to this unresolved ABS defect, the manufacturer should be held accountable.

I have a bad ABS Module. Due to this, I dont not have ABS, traction control, or cruise control. I have been trying to get one for years, since roughly 2021... Again, I do not have ABS or tractions control, which are federally mandated to have. I have been told that the chips on this module is bad and that nothing that can be done. This is just wrong, and is a major safety concern on the road that I would hold the dealer liable for. Safety is a major concern here if I have to brake abruptly, or it is raining without traction control I fear for myself and others lives are at risk ... There were no warning, the light indicators just went off and started flashing... I feel this needs to be fixed asap, and I just recently learned that I could reach out here in hopes to find a resolution. If it cant be fixed, then I believe the dealer should have to buy the vehicle back as they are federally mandated to provide ABS and traction control on vehicles. Thank you for your time.

My airbags did not deploy during this impact. I have never had an issue with the air bag system on this vehicle, but believe the dealership had performed a recall or flashed some software within the last 3 years pertaining to the airbag. I'm not sure if the computer detected the impact and decided not to deploy the airbags, or if they should have deployed and the system was faulty? I am a larger man and am glad the seatbelt restrained me, but am afraid someone with smaller stature, or unable to brace themselves before impact would not have faired as well. As it is, I am on day 4 of neck, back and whole body aches and whiplash which has caused a constant unbearable headache with light and sound sensitivity in the harsh summer that probably could have been lessened had the airbag stopped me?

Electronic Power Steering just stopped all of a sudden while I was going up the mountain into North Carolina that almost caused an accident the only reason it didn’t is because of the pull off right after the curve I was going through when I lost all steering! With the truck already in the pull off I stopped to see if I had lost a serpentine belt unaware this Ram is equipped with the EPS System. I had no phone service luckily someone came by when they did because of the snow storm seeing vehicles was few and far between! After letting the truck sit for about 20mins with the positive cable unhooked I started the truck and had steering again. So the nice gentleman that stopped said he would follow me to the nearest cell service area so I could call someone, No warning light the first time at all the second time the only warning light was service ABS system which shouldn’t affect having power steering. So I repeated the steps as I did the first time and had steering again the service ABS System light was gone and we made it 11 Minutes up the mountain before it happened again only this time all kinds of service lights came on all at once, Service Electronic brake system,Service ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM, SERVICE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER, SERVICE POWER STEERING SYSTEM, traction control was disabled which isn’t good in snowy weather conditions and i had no choice but to continue 3mins to the next town with no power steering no traction control and all these other warning lights because it wouldn’t fix it anymore temporarily by in hooking the positive battery cable and waiting 20 minutes which I attempted 3 times with no success once we reached the town I was able to call and have someone come pick me and my truck up and brought a scan tool I cleared the codes only for them to come right back as soon as I would crank the truck! Had it professionally scanned with same results! Very dangerous issue! Yes it can be inspected yes professionally inspected $2300part only not labor to!

Replaced the frozen suspension last year. Now that it’s cold again, similar codes are being thrown with new ones: Service Trailer Brake System, Service Air Suspension System, Service Electronic Braking System. To note, I’ve had a “Check Fuel Cap” code for years. It’s tied to 3 sensors along the fuel tank and absolutely nothing to do with the fuel cap itself. For the air suspension sensors (WHICH I’VE ALREADY REPLACED ONCE), and the fuel cap sensors— they all run nearly $300 a pop and that isn’t including labor. I personally cannot financially keep up with the vehicle’s maintenance costs. The fact that Canada had a class action lawsuit against FCA for the air suspension but we don’t is baffling. I pray nothing comes from these defective parts because I will be suing.

My Tailgate Came Open Unexpectedly, while my trailer was hooked up. I was in a development going around a turn very shortly after pulling off from my starting point. The tailgate crushed on the jack, causing significant tailgate damage. I have been In contacts with Turnersville Dodge, and they directed me to Maple Shade NJ Alfa Romeo/ Fiat. I have been on the phone with Them numerous times, as well as sent emails. This has been going on for over a year now. There is an open recall on the tailgate latch for my particular truck. This is the reason that my tailgate came open unexpectedly and caused significant damage. I have mentioned this recall, and I get alerts weekly about the open recall on the tailgate. Nothing is being done. I run a business , and have already had the inconvenience and unsafe operations, ongoing for over a year now. I am extremely busy, and it is extremely frustrating calling and emailing, with no fix in site. It’s insanity.

We have paid for everything out of pocket and we are still having all these problems and the mechanics can not figure out the problem, but are guessing it the fuel pump or fuel injectors.

1.The components that failed were the entire rear dif. It will be available for inspection and I will make certain that my mechanic takes photos. 2. My brakes completely locked up on me TWICE and the vehicle stalled. I was left in the middle of the road on a downward slope and on a curve, a blind spot. I was extremely fortunate that this didn't take place on the interstate and that there wasn't a tractor trailer following behind me!! 3. My mechanic verified that it was in fact the rear differential that was destroyed. The inside of the casing was "chewed up" by the gears. He called around and was able to locate a slightly used one to attempt to save me money and it was easier for him to complete the task of replacing it. 4. There are no police reports or insurance claims. 5. There were no warning lamps to alert me that anything was wrong. The only thing that took place was the truck lost power TWICE while traveling on the interstate where I was forced to stop in the break down lane. Both situations could have ended MUCH WORSE for me.

I am writing this letter about a vehicle I purchased in November 2023. The vehicle purchased was a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 Diesel from Rick Chevrolet in Virginia Beach VA. The truck has many defects. The first month I took it back for a leaking tire, broken windshield, oil leak and because it drove funny and I did not know what was wrong with it, but I knew something was wrong. They kept the truck for approximately a week or two. In April I hit a pothole in Norfolk off [XXX] and I didn’t know what had happened to the truck. I left it in Norfolk until the next morning because I could not get a tow truck to come out that night. I had my truck towed to Dodge, Ram and FIAT in Norfolk VA. They told me the Tie Rod, Axle, had broken. The Dealer then, told me that the truck would not align so they sent it to the Collision Center. The collision center told me that the truck had a bent frame and it did not happen due to the pothole. That the truck was a death trap and I need not to drive it that the dealer should not have sold me that truck. I went and talked to the Manager at Rick Chevrolet named Kerry and he said we could swap the truck, but I had to make a down payment of an excessive amount due to my credit. I did not know that this truck was a nightmare and I feel why should I have to pay for someone selling me a truck that can kill me and whoever is riding with me. I bought the truck because they are supposed to be safe. This is ridiculous and the dealership is not trying to help me out of this by putting me in a safe vehicle. I am paying for something that is going to cause me bodily harm or my life, and they want me to pay more to get into a safe vehicle. This truck should not have been sold and because it was, they need to take responsibility and swap me out of this death trap. Can you please look into this matter. The collision center gave me copies of what they did, and what they found wrong with the truck and a picture of frame being bent. While traveling on a paved state maintained road at approximately 45-50 miles per hour, the driver side front tire on my 2017 RAM 1500 exploded. The condition of the road at the time was clear and there were no foreign objects laying in the lane of travel. Upon the tire exploding, I was immediately pulled left into the opposing lane of traffic. No injuries or crash were reported during this incident, however had my rate of speed been higher, lack of driving skills, or oncoming traffic, the results could have proved to be fatal. After finding a safe location off of the travelled roadway, I replaced the faulty tire with a spare. I observed damage to my inner fender liner as a result of the explosion. The tire has not been inspected by the police, insurance company, or the manufacturer. No warning lamps or other indicators provided notification of any problems prior to the incident. The faulty tire in question is Identified as a Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, P275/60R20. This tire is an original installation from the vehicle manufacturer and has been in service for 20,300 miles. This particular tire blew out in a straight line fashion across the tread section of the tire from sidewall to the opposite sidewall. This is the first time that I have ever reported a safety matter, however due to the unique circumstances of the failure of this tire, I feel that this matter should be investigated and this tire removed from service. I have conducted internet searches and found other consumers have experienced the exact same tire failure scenario. I will be replacing all four Gooodyear tires on my RAM truck tomorrow with a completely different manufacturer. The tire can be retained for inspection if necessary, although it will be disposed of if no such request is received.

The 8.4" infotainment screen freezes up at random times. This is an ongoing recurring issue. This is not only a comfort/convenience/entertainment annoyance. This also disables safety equipment, for example the back-up camera and the windshield defrosting via the climate control system. While I have reached out to the manufacturer for guidance, I have not taken it in for service. There are no warning lamps or indicators of malfunction. This has not resulted in any accidents yet, although I can plainly see the potential.

UNCOMMON VEHICLE VIBRATIONS FELT WHILE IDLING. WHILE DRIVING, VEHICLE SHAKES AT ALL SPEEDS AND BECOMES MORE PRONOUNCED THE FASTER THE VELOCITY. AFTER HAVING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE PERFORMED AT CHAPMAN LAS VEGAS VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO ME. WHEN I TOOK POSSESSION AND STARTED THE VEHICLE AT CHAPMAN LAS VEGAS IT MISFIRED (UNCONTROLLABLY SHAKING) AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. DEALER ENDED UP KEEPING VEHICLE ANOTHER DAY TO INSPECT MISFIRE/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ISSUE. ACCORDING TO CHAPMAN LAS VEGAS THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE REASON FOR THE MISFIRE/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND HAD ME PICK UP THE VEHICLE THE NEXT DAY. EVER SINCE THAT INCIDENT THE VEHICLE HAS BECOME UNSTABLE AND CONSTANTLY SHAKES. I WAS ADVISE BY CHAPMAN LAS VEGAS TO "CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNTIL ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON" AS THEY CAN'T FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM FOR THE CONTINUED SHAKING. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A FEW WEEKS NOW. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE CONTINUING TO DRIVE A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. I'M NOW STARTING TO FEEL AND HEAR RATTLING SOUNDS WHILE MAKING TURNS. NOT SURE IF ITS AT ALL CONNECTED BUT AGAIN THE VEHICLE DOES NOT FEEL SAFE. SPOKE WITH [name removed] AGENT TODAY AND WILL BE DROPPING THE VEHICLE OFF AGAIN. ON TOP OF THE SHAKING NOW THE REAR VIEW CAMERA IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. IVE TAKEN VIDEOS OF THE REARVIEW CAMERA ISSUES. UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T VIDEO THE VIBRATING VEHICLE. ON 9/14/2020 AT APPROXIMATELY 9:30 AM AN EMPLOYEE OF CHAPMAN LAS VEGAS (MECHANIC MARK) DID A DRIVE ALONG WITH ME SO THAT HE COULD ASSES THE SHAKING OF THE VEHICLE. HE CONFIRMED THAT IN FACT IT WAS SHAKING. HE ADVISED THAT HE THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE AN ISSUE WITH THE TIRES. I IMMEDIATELY (1 HOUR LATER) WENT AND HAD THE TIRE TREAD CHECKED, TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED. THE SHAKING STILL CONTINUES!

NOTICED A SMELL FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW CONSISTENT WITH WET AND MOLDY CARPET AFTER IT RAINS. I NOTICED UNDER MY BACK SEATS IN THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT THAT THERE WAS STAGNANT WATER PUDDLING UP. BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC SHOP IN CORAL SPRINGS ( DR. BRAKES W/ MIKE.) AND HAD THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED FOR A FEE. FOUND OUT THAT THE REAR GLASS WITH THE OPERABLE WINDOW WAS LEAKING DOWN THE PASSENGERS SIDE, WETTING THE BACK INSULATION GOING DOWN TO THE CARPET FLOORING, AND FINALLY INTO THE STORAGE COMPARTMENTS. I CALLED COOPERATE IN REGARDS TO THIS ISSUE AND THE FIRST REP WAS PROFESSIONAL AND ASSISTED ME WITH A "GOOD WILL" CLAIM BEING THAT THIS IS MY FIRST DODGE VEHICLE AND EVEN INSISTED ON MY BROTHER PURCHASING ONE (WHICH HE DID, 2019 RAM SPORT ORANGE IN COLOR).THE REP HELPED ME SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED.
