Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 567 complaints across the 4 model-year 2006 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
Price & value
We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.
Is it a good deal?
- Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
- Enter that value and the asking price below.
Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.
The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.
Owner's manual
Get the free official owner's manual from Toyota's owner's manuals page. Choose 2006 Tundra. It covers maintenance schedules, fluids, towing limits and warning lights. Older years may not be listed online.
Recalls
A recall doesn't mean a truck still has the problem. Enter the truck's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a dealer to see whether the repair was done.

My frame is rotting, with literal holes in it. I spoke with a dealership and they stated the recall had been fixed in 2015, prior to me owning it. I was told to contact the manufacturer and they said it would be an out of pocket expense. When I research the recall, the affected area of the frame is the same, with no apparent fixes.

The frame on my 2006 Toyota Tundra SR5 has severe corrosion and multiple areas of rust perforation despite being treated under Toyota’s Limited Service Campaign D0D in 2015. During that campaign, the dealer removed the bed, documented active rust on the frame, cleaned it, and applied Corrosion-Resistant Compound (CRC) to key areas as the preventative remedy. As documented in multiple repairs the corrosion was already advancing at the time the CRC was applied, the steering shaft boot was replaced the same day as the compound was put on at 93,822 miles, several other critical safety failure shortly after; the brake pivots seized at 94900, Rotors rust pitted at 99537, bumper had perforations at 109407, 1 brake line from master cylinder and 1 brake line from ABS actuator leaking near the junction block on L/S of the frame at 113422, 52 days later the shift cable was broken at 114904. The current perforation and delamination indicate that the D0D remedy failed to prevent structural degradation as intended. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle’s structural integrity is severely compromised, creating a risk of frame failure while driving. This puts my safety and the safety of others at risk due to potential loss of control or component separation. The problem has not yet been inspected by the dealer in its current condition but has been escalated to Toyota Corporate. I have attached the communications with them. The truck has been fully serviced through Toyota since new, with the last documented service in January 2021. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages prior to the failure. Visible rust first appeared prior to the D0D treatment and has now progressed to full perforation. The vehicle is currently unsafe to drive.

I own a 2006 Toyota Tundra with severe frame corrosion and rot. The rust has eaten through major portions of the frame, especially around the rear crossmember and leaf spring mounts. It has compromised the vehicle’s safety and structural integrity. Toyota previously offered frame replacements and extended corrosion coverage for similar models (Tacoma, Sequoia, and certain Tundras), but my VIN was denied even though the issue is identical. The corrosion is so severe that it poses a risk of the frame snapping or suspension components detaching while driving. This is a serious safety defect, not just cosmetic rust. The frame can fail without warning, which could lead to loss of control or an accident. Toyota should be required to inspect and address this defect for all affected vehicles. Location of problem: Frame rails, rear crossmember, spare tire area, and control arm mounts. Date problem occurred: 07/09/2025 I’m requesting that NHTSA investigate and require Toyota to include my vehicle in their frame corrosion program or issue a new recall covering affected first-generation Tundras.

I have reached out to Toyota and my local dealer and have received the same answer from both saying its not something that Toyota will cover, despite the fact that there was a national safety recall that started in 2016 for rust related issues.

On April 6, 2024 I was driving my 2006 Toyota Tundra when the brakes gave out and the vehicle went through the back wall of my garage. The brake fluid spilled onto the street and onto my driveway. There are 3 witnesses to this including a police officer. I am lucky that I was not a highway when this happened. I had the Tundra towed to a repair garage and they put it on a hoist. Two mechanics showed me the underside which is completely rusted , including some holes. They told me I would have continuous problems because of the rust. They also said that Toyota may have had a recall for my vehicle. I did the research and found that to be accurate. The recall includes millions Toyotas, including my Toyota Tundra, built between 2004 and 2008. So mine is eligible. However, Toyota did not contact me about the recall. Toyota did contact me about another recall involving the air bags. Toyota sent me a letter about the air bags. I still have the letter and I can send a copy if you wish. So, they have my name, address, and they know that I own the Tundra. But they did not contact me about the frame rust. Had they done so, I would have acted immediately. I purchased the vehicle in 2012, so it was a used vehicle. So, Toyota, obviously has had plenty of time to notify me, but they did not. I called Toyota and gave the person I talked to the VIN. She looked it up and told me there is " no service history of rust frame repair" for my Tundra" on their system. Toyota needs to rectify this. I expect that Toyota will pay for the rust frame damage, as they have for millions of other Toyotas, and for other damage to my vehicle, and other costs including towing costs, taxi service, the insurance deductible that I must pay for damage to my garage, two new front tires and other costs as they become known. This is only fair.

Good afternoon, my name is [name removed], and I live in south west Florida. I have a 2006 Toyota tundra and I absolutely love my truck I believe this is one of the best trucks on the road even though it was built in 2006 (275,000 miles) The issue I'm having is my frame is to the point where I will have to get rid of my truck. The other issue is the frame is so bad I can't even sell my truck. I know there was a recall several years back and I'm curious why my truck is not part of this recall. My truck is rusting right above the rear leaf spring shackles and right at the bend by the motor. I have taken extremely good care of this truck it stays in my garage and the frame has been sprayed with under coating professionally every two years. I even have a detailed list of everything that's been done with this truck since 40,000 miles. Since my truck has been taken care of very well, I have not had any issues until now. I know Toyota is a very reliable vehicle and was curious if there's anything you can do to help me with the situation. Please respond to this email, confirming or denying assistance on my frame repair. Thank you.

Luckily there has not been an incident as of yet. Shortly after I purchased truck in 4-2017 the steering rack rusted off, had that repaired, few months later noticed rear differential was dripping due to rust eating through entire casing. My mechanic informed me that there was a recall issue involving frame rust so I took it to Toyota service dept. where they inspected and said it was fine and that the recall had expired. I went ahead and spent $1100.00 for new tires and a few weeks later heard noise underneath, turns out exhaust reducer is rusted apart, but when I looked at frame I was shocked to see several holes, a couple the size of my fist and frame looks like it is starting to twist. I took it to dealer again to have them look at it and they just said there is nothing they can do for me at this point. The rest of truck is rust free, in great shape, it was 80% garage kept. Please let me know if there is any recourse for me with this potentially dangerous situation.

Frame failure at driver's side front wheel due to excessive rust. Dealership inspected frame 8 months prior to failure and said it was safe to drive. Wheel and steering components broke free from frame. Truck was suddenly unable to move or be driven. Luckily it happened in a parking lot and not while driving on road or on highway at high speed. Yes independent service center confirmed frame failure. No inspections have been done. No warnings.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM ANOTHER MAN. THE TRUCK WOULD STEER OFF WHEN IT WOULD HIT A SMALL BUMP OR HOLE IN THE ROAD. I TOOK IT TO GOODYEAR TO SEE IF IT WAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ALIGNMENT AND FOUND OUT THE WHOLE FRONT END SUSPENSION AND EVERYTHING ATTACHED TO IT NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE TRUCK IS MOTION AND HAVE HAD TO CHANGE AND ROTATE THE TIRES MORE THAN ONCE WITHIN THIS YEAR. THERE IS WEAR ON THE FRONT TIRES ON THE OUTSIDE. I WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THEM AGAIN WHEN WE FIX THE ALIGNMENT. THIS ALSO HAPPENS ON ANY STREET AND IS PRETTY SCARY WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE TIRES SOUND LIKE I'M PEELING OUT OR THE TIRE IS FLAT AS I'M DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I CAN'T MAKE SHARP TURNS BECAUSE THE TIRES START SKIPPING. I HAVE NOT MADE ANY REPAIRS TO IT BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY THE BILL AT THIS TIME. ONLY THING I'VE FIXED IS THE TIRES. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH SHOW THAT THE TIRES ARE LOW ON AIR. THE COST QUOTED TO ME WOULD BE CLOSE TO $2000. I ALSO HEARD FROM MANY PEOPLE THAT THE YEAR I HAVE WITH THE TUNDRA HAVE HAD THE SAME COMPLAINTS AS I HAVE. IT'S A 2006 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND IS MY FIRST TRUCK PURCHASE FOR MYSELF.. MY FIRST VEHICLE WAS A 1983 TOYOTA CAMRY AND I LOVED IT!! There have been other recalls such as the air bag recall Iam not sure that was done correctly. Recently I took my toyota to toyota of Keene NH. I was told that they found other issues like the yransfer case was cracked in half. And there was a priblem with the head lights. Yes I can see there was a problem with the lights, someone at toyota service did not plug them backin after they checked them. I had to move the battery to get at the head light think it was a bad bulb, not. And I lost the screw to the battery compartment some where intheengine area. The contact’s father owns a 2006 Toyota Tundra equipped with Cooper Tires, Tire Line: Discoverer Rugged Trek, Tire Size: 265/70/R16, DOT Number: (N/A). While the contact’s father was driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The contact’s father was able to regain control of the vehicle by releasing the accelerator pedal and allowing the vehicle to decelerate. The driver was able to pull over to the side of the road to inspect the vehicle. The driver became aware that the tread on the driver's side tire had separated, causing a portion of the tire near the seam to detach around the entire tire. The tire was a replacement tire. The driver replaced the tire with the spare. The contact sent an email to American Tire Depot where the tire was purchased. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 194,040, and the tire failure mileage was approximately 17,339.

SOMETIME IN AUGUST OF 2008 I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN MY 2006 TOYOTA TUNDRA, THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME WAS DRIVING VERY SLOW. I GOT IRRITATED, CHANGED LANES AND PUNCHED MY GAS PEDAL. WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL MY TRUCK KEPT ACCELERATING. I PUT ON THE BRAKE AND IT STILL DIDN'T STOP ACCELERATING, ONLY WHEN I TRIED AGAIN AND PUT THE BRAKE ON AS HARD AS I COULD, I HEARD A "POP" NOISE AND THE ACCELERATOR WENT BACK TO NORMAL. I DIDN'T TAKE MY TRUCK IN TO BE REPAIRED RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE I HAD IT FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS AND IT NEVER DID THAT BEFORE AND IT ONLY DID IT WHEN I PUNCHED THE GAS PEDAL. I ALSO HAD NO EYE WITNESSES AND DIDN'T TRUST THE DEALER. SO I TRIED TO REPRODUCE THE ACCELERATION 3 OR 4 MORE TIMES SUCCESSFULLY DURING LIGHT TRAFFIC AND WITH WITNESSES, EACH TIME WHEN I PUT ON THE BRAKE VERY HARD I HEARD A "POP" AND THE ACCELERATOR WENT BACK TO NORMAL. BEFORE I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE DEALER ABOUT 2 MONTHS LATER I WENT ON THE FREEWAY DURING LIGHT TRAFFIC TO SEE HOW FAST THE TUNDRA WOULD GO AND IF IT WOULD STOP BY ITSELF. THE TRUCK ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 75 MPH AND MADE THE "POP" SOUND AND WENT BACK TO NORMAL WITHOUT PUTTING ON THE BRAKE. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED EVERYTHING THAT HAD HAPPENED AND THAT I HAD WITNESSES. THEY SAID THEY WOULD CHECK IT OUT AND SEEMED LIKE THEY ALREADY KNEW ABOUT IT. WHEN I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER TO PICK UP MY TRUCK I BROUGHT MY WIFE. THE SERVICE REP. TOOK ME ASIDE SO MY WIFE COULDN'T HEAR AND TOLD ME "OFFICIALLY WE DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, UNOFFICIALLY IT DID WHAT YOU SAID". THEN HE WENT ON TO EXPLAIN THAT THE OLD ACCELERATORS USED TO USE CABLES TO GIVE THE ENGINE MORE GAS, BUT THE NEW ACCELERATORS LIKE MINE USE A VACUUM SYSTEM TO GIVE THE ENGINE MORE GAS. HE SAID THAT MY VACUUM SYSTEM HAD GOTTEN DIRTY INSIDE, THEY CLEANED IT OUT AND THEY DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT WITH REFERENCE TO ODI #' S 10183308 AND 10288886. THESE ODI'S WERE PUT IN BY ME. THESE ARE LEAD UP'S TO THIS COMPLAINT. AFTER THE COLLISION WITH THE POLARIS I DROVE MY VEHICLE HOME. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO TIM'S TOYOTA IN PRESCOTT AZ. WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THEY LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE AND SAID THAT THEY WOULD CALL FOR A FACTORY REP. TO LOOK AT MY VEHICLE. THIS WAS TO BE ON NOV. 9, 2009. I DID DRIVE MY VEHICLE TO YARNELL AZ FOR DEER SEASON. I DROVE THE VEHICLE BACK TO PRESCOTT TO MEET WITH THE FACTORY REP. HE DID WHATEVER THEY DO AND SAID HE HAD ALL THE INFORMATION HE NEEDED. HE ALSO TOLD ME TO GO AHEAD AND GET AN ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIRS BUT NOT TO HAVE IT REPAIRED UNTIL I HEARD FROM TOYOTA. THE PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE IS JUST SHY OF $2000.00. THIS ESTIMATE WAS GIVEN TO JEFF LOCKE TO BE SENT TO TOYOTA. MY QUESTION TO ALL OF THIS IS, WHY DID TOYOTA ALLOW ME TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AFTER THE MEETING, WHEN THEY KNOW THAT I AM DRIVING A TIME BOMB. ALSO WHY HASN'T NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY INVOLVED ITSELF INTO AN INVESTIGATION OF ITS OWN? I NOW KNOW THE VERBIAGE FOR THE INCIDENT. IT IS CALLED " SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" WHICH IS TIED TOGETHER WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL, THROTTLE BODY AND OTHER ELECTRICAL, VACUUM CONTROLLED , MECHANICAL UNITS. LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELVES. IT WILL OPEN YOUR EYES TO WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS CONDITION. MY VEHICLE SITS IN MY GARAGE SO ANYTIME NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY WANTS TO DO AN INVESTIGATION IS FINE WITH ME. TOYOTA HAS NOT DONE A PROPER EVALUATION OF THE ISSUE. MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS BEHIND ME 100% AND IS NOW GOING TO CONTACT TOYOTA TO TRY TO FIND THE CAUSE FOR "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" AND CRUISE CONTROL UNITS TO BEHAVE THE WAY THAT THEY ARE. RACING TO OVER 5000 RPM'S AND HUNTING GEARS THE WAY THEY DO IS JUST NOT THE WAY THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO OPERATE. I WAS TOLD THAT MOISTURE GETS INTO THE PUMP WHICH CAUSES THE PUMP TO SEND INSULATION INTO THE VALVES. THIS SENDS THE VEHICLE INTO LIMP MODE CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER. I'M LUCKY I WAS NOT ON THE INTERSTATE OR IT MAY HAVE KILLED ME. TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THIS DEFECT AND REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. I QUICKLY PULLED OVER THE TRUCK, RAN TO THE BACK AND TOOK THE UNIT OUT OF MY SON'S HANDS BEFORE HE WAS INJURED. THE UNIT WAS EXTREMELY HOT.

There is a bracket under the drivers seat, left side of seat, that is cracked all the way through just above the weld where it attachs to the horizontal tube that rotates when the power lever is pushed forward or backward. This bracket is associated with the "seat back" tilting forward or backward. This bracket being broken, allows the drivers seatback to be unstable and can be tilted forward in the event of an accident.

I HAVE A FIBERGLASS CAP ON THE BED OF MY PICKUP TRUCK. WHEN IT RAINS OR SNOWS, OR DURING ANY INCLEMENT WEATHER, I CAN NOT SEE OUT THE BACK WINDOW OF THE CAP. THERE IS NO WIPER FOR THE BACK WINDOW.. ALL SUV TYPE VEHICLES HAVE A WIPER, BUT NOT TRUCK CAPS. WHY? I UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR FMVSS NO. 111, REAR VIEW MIRRORS, STATES THAT I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE OUT THE REAR WINDOW, TO THE HORIZON, CLEARLY. WITHOUT A WIPER THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE. WHEN THE CAPS ARE INSTALLED ON THE TRUCKS IT BLOCKS THE UPPER BRAKE LIGHT, AND YOU MADE THE CAP MANUFACTURERS PUT AN UPPER REAR BRAKE LIGHT ON THE BACK OF THE CAPS. SINCE THE CAP MANUFACTURERS ARE IN VIOLATION OF THE RULE, YOU SHOULD FORCE THEM TO INSTALL WIPERS ON ALL THEIR CAPS. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I READ ON A MICHELIN WIPER BLADE ADVERTISEMENT THAT 40% OF ALL ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY REDUCED VISION. A WIPER SYSTEM IS AVAILABLE ON WWW.TRUCKCAPWIPER.COM.THEY SHOULD BUY THEM THERE AND INSTALL THEM ON ALL CAPS.
