Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 384 complaints across the 7 model-year 2023 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
Price & value
We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.
Is it a good deal?
- Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
- Enter that value and the asking price below.
Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.
The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

Addendum to previous submission # 11760415. At 15,033 mileage again multiple codes present along with a rough running engine. Dealership service dept confirmed on 9/17/2026 verification of 10 active codes , 2 pending codes triggering check engine light. Onstar notification as well of engine issue. Prominently codes P0016 & P0340 lead the list. PICO testing was stated to have failed two out of 3 parameters. Officially stated now as an engine defect which is being directed to be replaced with a remanufactured , not new , motor. Very fortunate to not have experienced dramatic failure ( loss of propulsion ) at highway speeds far from home. Even though this vehicle warning's persisted prior to this ultimate conclusion it was insisted that ultimate failure was necessary before any resolution would be instituted. A safety conundrum if you will. A high probability safety risk of continued use ( based on historical data on this known engine failure risk ) to ‘ prove ‘ it would fail like many others already have. A fair assessment of my personal experience.

On 9-10-26 Engine spun rod bearings per the dealership repair order Miles 52,796 I was towing a car on a car trailer traveling down the interstate when the motor failed. I had my wife in the truck with me. No prior warnings just a check engine light right before engine failed. GMC dealer replaced engine and returned on 9-14-26. The truck had already had the recall to check the engine and replace the oil to a thicker oil.

Purchased above listed vehicle new in XXX. Immediately noticed a 'coolant' smell in cab. brought vehicle in for coolant smell issue on XXX and XXX. We were told that there was no issue until finally on XXX we were told the radiator needed to be replaced at OUR expense. XXX we received a letter from GMC advising the "engine coolant control valve" may fail. In XXX while driving on mountain roads (we live in [XXX]) the check engine light came on and while at 50 mph, the vehicle went into "limp mode" we lost power and speed was immediately reduced. We now know that a symptom of that valve failure is coolant smell in the cab of the car, a problem we had attempted to address with GMC from the beginning. We could have had a serious accident driving on a busy mountain road when this failure occurred. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Truck rear wheels locked up while going between 45 - 50 mph nearly causing accident. Driver behind me had to lock-up their breaks to avoid collision. This is happening every time I drive the truck for more than 30 minutes. It is happening multiple times a day now. I cannot drive truck - too unsafe to drive. Tried getting serviced, but local GMC dealer said they are backed up with truck transmission issues and can't get mine in until Sep 15 - 3 weeks after first reporting. No warning signs. The locking of rear wheels takes me by surprise.

I am reporting a serious safety concern involving a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali, 6.2L L87 V8, VIN [XXX]. This vehicle has now experienced two catastrophic powertrain failures at very low mileage. The first catastrophic engine failure occurred at approximately 23,696 miles. The vehicle was taken to a GMC dealer, where the repair documentation states that the engine had suffered significant internal damage, including damage to the #3 connecting rod, a missing connecting-rod bearing, bearing material throughout the engine, and a scored crankshaft. The dealer determined that the engine was seized and required replacement. GM replaced the engine under warranty with GM engine assembly part number 12740076. The vehicle has now experienced a second catastrophic failure. On [XXX], while traveling approximately 40 mph, experienced grinding, lurching, and knocking, followed by a complete loss of propulsion. The truck would no longer move and had to be towed to a GMC dealer. At the time of the incident, no warning lights or warning messages were observed. The transmission is also suspected to have failed, although the exact cause and extent of the transmission failure have not yet been determined by the dealer. I understand that NHTSA is currently investigating failures involving GM 6.2L L87 engines, including failures occurring after previous recall remedies and engine replacements. I am therefore requesting that this incident be included in NHTSA’s investigation and considered when evaluating the effectiveness of the existing recall remedy and the safety of replacement L87 engines. I am reaching out to NHTSA due to a vehicle that I believe will get me and/or my family in a major accident and cause serious injury or death. The vehicle that I had purchased in 07/08/2025 had a clean history report and was bought at 54,587 miles. It started having issues 8,563 miles later (odometer reading 63,150 ) on a trip that was 400 miles round trip. I was driving the vehicle on a highway at 65 mph and i felt a knocking vibration in the pedal it was not long before i could even pull over when the engine throttle had completely lost power causing the vehicle to almost come to a complete stop immediately having to steer onto the shoulder. after failing with no check engine light or warning present during the use of the vehicle on the road. it was giving off high temp/engine overheating with the engine making a continuous knocking sound in the engine. It eventually seized to work completely not being able to shift into neutral to push, and had to get it towed to the dealership 204 miles away. GM had advised the dealership to replace the whole engine which they did, and that second engine had given out 678 miles later (odometer reading 63,828.) I am now on my THIRD engine and i cannot trust or rely this vehicle for saftey or transporation. i have reached out to GM to file a claim and attempt to adress this issue to try and come to a resolution, however they denied my claim and have said that i am not "eligible" for a buyback program. I am considering getting legal attorney this is very frustrating to say the least GM is a terrible manufacturer for this issue

While driving my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 at highway/interstate speed, the front upper grille molding/deflector unexpectedly detached from the vehicle. There was no collision or known impact immediately preceding the failure. I recovered the detached molding and inspected the vehicle afterward. Multiple molded attachment points on the back of the upper grille molding are fractured/broken. Several of the attachment retainers and mounting hardware remain attached to the vehicle. Photographs were taken of the detached molding, broken attachment points, mounting locations, and the vehicle after the incident. I have retained the failed part. I am aware of NHTSA Recall 25V060 / GM Safety Recall N242490120 concerning certain 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles in which front upper grille deflector attachment points may fracture over time, potentially allowing the deflector to detach from the vehicle and become a road hazard. My vehicle is a 2023 model and is not currently included in that recall, but the failure I experienced appears similar to the failure described in that campaign. I am reporting this incident because the component detached while the vehicle was traveling at highway speed and could have struck another vehicle or created a roadway hazard. I request that NHTSA document and evaluate this failure and determine whether similar failures are occurring in 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer. There were no warning lights, messages, looseness, or other symptoms noticed before the molding detached. The failure occurred suddenly while the vehicle was in motion and created a potential road hazard for following motorists. The failed molding remains in my possession and is available for inspection. My vehicle is a 2023 model and is not currently included in Recall 25V060 / GM N242490120, but the observed attachment-point fractures appear similar to the failure described in that recall.

600 miles and 3 months out of warranty the dash completely disappeared. Dealership says the costs is in excess of $1600 to fix the issue. I have researched this and it is a common problem with these trucks and it needs an instrument cluster. Given the fact that GMC controls the panels to these trucks I feel certain that this is actually caused by them and should be fixed under a recall. We have owned the truck 6 months. We are not able to see the speed limit, gas limits or anything on the dash any longer.

Scared to back up to a camper or trailer because it is unpredictable how far it will jerk. No alerts or warnings. Has been taken to the dealer shop many occasions. Accelerator pedal has been replaced. Transmission reprogrammed. The radio/electronics has been updated on multiple occasions. Still both problems exist. Hood Molding- While driving down highway 45 doing about 75 miles per hour the hood molding detached on the driver side and started beating against the hood. I was unable to reach and exit before the entire mood flew off and over car. Fortunately, there were no cars right behind me to cause and accident, except an 18-wheeler about 2 cars back and he ran over the molding. I contacted the dealership and GMC, but they said no recall on this issue. There were a recall 25V-060 for the 2022 (production dates NOV 09, 2021 - SEP 29, 2022). My vehicle production date is 08/19/2022 and they could have been using the same material. I feel this the same safety issue: If a front grille deflector detaches unexpectedly while driving, there is increased risk of a crash. My 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4WD currently at 67659 miles was taken in to the dealer because of excessive jerk when accelerating or trying to reverse, diagnostic scan failed for check engine and ABS trouble codes. The scan return code PO747 indicating transmission pressure control solenoid “A” was stuck on for a predetermined period of time. The recommended repair is replacement of automatic transmission, solenoid control valve body. I’m aware that GM has issued a TSB 25–NA-255 and special coverage N24245441–02 addressing this exact failure on the GM 10 speed and that GM previously issued a related recall N242454440 addressing this exact failure on the GM 10 speed transmissions, and that GM previously issued a related recall for this citing rear wheel lock up risk associated with transmission valve condition. My vehicle scan showed an ABS failure at the same time as a transmission. code, consistent with the safety risk. GM has already acknowledged and its own recall documentation however I was told to contact NHTSA to document the safety risk and request investigation of the scope of this defect across affected models years and vehicles as mine seems to have fallen short. I previously owned a 2021GMC vehicle same model that experience the identical transmission valve body failure that vehicle could not be repaired in a reasonable time and I ultimately experience financial loss and had to replace a vehicle now I’m experiencing the same defect on the vehicle purchased (this one) with significantly fewer miles than would be expected for a major transmission failure, indicating that this may be a reoccurring manufacturing design defect rather than an isolated incident. Thank you for your time and I hope this issue can be resolved as I do love the truck otherwise however safety first. Thank you

My 2023 GNC Sierra 1500 has experienced a recurring electrical and safety-related malfunction on multiple occasions while driving. The dashboard and warning lights intermittently flash on, and off and numerous warning messages appear simultaneously. During previous occurrences, warnings included power steering service, safety restraint system, check engine and transmission related messages, including a message instructing me to pull over and shut the vehicle off. During one occurrence, the electric power steering assist stopped working while I was driving. The vehicle was taken to an authorized GMC dealership multiple times while under the factory warranty. The dealer replaced the Brake System Control Module and performed vehicle-wide software/programming updates. When the problem continued, the dealer contacted GM Technical Assistance. The Dealer subsequently diagnosed an intermittent open circuit involving the electric power steering rack-and-pinion/steering gear assembly and replaced the complete steering gear assembly. Despite these repairs, the malfunction has occurred again, during another occurrence while driving on the freeway, the dashboard flashed on and off and multiple warning lights and messages repeatedly appeared, similar to the condition that occurred before the steering gear was replaced. This complaint involves a sudden failure of my vehicle’s Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Forward Collision Warning system, both of which are critical safety systems. While driving my [XXX] son to school, multiple warning lights suddenly appeared on the dashboard without any prior indication of a problem. The vehicle displayed a warning message instructing me not to exceed 36 miles per hour, and several system alerts activated simultaneously, my ABS brake system failed and a transmission failure warning. These issues appeared suddenly while the vehicle was in normal operation. Prior to this incident, the vehicle had been functioning perfectly. The evening before, I had driven the vehicle to pick up my son from wrestling practice with no issues. The following morning, during a routine trip to school, these critical safety warnings appeared without warning. Because the warnings involved the braking system, I immediately took the vehicle to Beach Buick GMC for inspection. The dealership diagnosed the issue as a software failure affecting the braking system and informed me that the vehicle required a software update and system download in order to restore proper operation of the brakes and related safety systems. I was required to pay over $300 for this repair because my vehicle is approximately 3,000 miles outside of the warranty period. However, I believe a failure involving the braking system and safety warnings should not occur suddenly in a properly functioning vehicle and should not be treated as a normal maintenance expense. I contacted **General Motors customer service to ask why a failure involving a critical safety system would not be covered or investigated further. The only explanation provided was that the vehicle was outside of the warranty period. I requested a written explanation of their decision for my records, but I was told that providing written explanations is against company policy. I have more to say but I am out of characters... I brought this truck brand new. Had issues the first couple days of purchase that was a quick fix, but as time went on things got worse. Truck always stalling out, engine has been replaced once already due to a recall and months after the first replacement, it stalled out on me again in the middle of the freeway and I just got a call from the dealership that it needs another new engine! How is this right! How is this safe! I could've lost my life on every occasion it has happened.

On March 13, 2026 I purchased a 2023 GMC Sierra AT4 Pickup with 3.0 Diesel Engine. While driving on a state highway in a 35 mph zone I started to accelerate as the speed zone changed. The truck suddenly had the rear wheel lock up for a brief time about quarter to half second then the truck proceeded on. This happened as the transmission was downshifting. Then on or about March 24, 2026 I was using the same truck and towing a 4,000 pound enclosed trailer. This trailer was hooked up within all recommended hookup requirements. In a 225 mile trip I experienced the same rear wheel lock up happen 4 random times during the trip. Once this happened at 65 miles and hour had there been snow or ice on the highway the truck may have crashed. This lock up happened while using the truck in tow haul mode. Two times it happened while the truck was being towed with cruise control active and two times it happened while not using cruise control. Truck was brought to Authorized GM Dealer and inspected and truck had no stored codes from transmission related issues. Dealer blamed this for using cruise while towing. I informed dealer this happened while not using cruise as well. Was told to turn off adaptive cruise when towing. I was unable to find anything in the GMC Manual regarding not using cruise while towing. This appears to be an issue with the valve body in the transmission and customer explained this to the dealer but they denied this claim. When these quick moment lockups happen no codes or engine lights show everything on dash appears normal. Customer is bringing truck to another GM Dealer to be tested and examined.

The vehicle currently has approximately 55,000 miles. The condition remains intermittent despite multiple repair attempts. I am concerned that this recuring electrical or vehicle communication failure could again cause loss of power steering assistance or affect other safety-related vehicle systems while driving.

The vehicle has suffered repeated systemic electrical failures all while being under 8,000 miles. What component/system failed? Power distribution/fuse block, starter, fuel pump control module, horn circuit, body control module, instrument cluster, and charging system. Error codes documented include P0627 (Fuel Pump Control Circuit), U0100 (Lost Comm ECM/PCM), B1325 (Control Module Power Low), U0140 (Lost Comm BCM), and B1000 (ECM fault). All repairs are documented by the dealer, and the truck remains available for inspection. How was safety at risk? The truck lost propulsion at speed, emitted smoke from the engine bay, and became disabled in traffic, placing my family, including my toddler, in immediate danger of collision and fire. Electrical defects also disabled horn and instrument cluster, removing critical warning and signaling functions. These electrical issues have been ongoing for months and GM refuses to replace and can't seem to fix it. Has it been confirmed? Yes. Each failure was diagnosed and confirmed by an authorized GM dealer. Components replaced include fuse block, starter, fuel system computer, horn assembly, and cluster. Despite repairs, issues recur. Inspected by others? GM corporate case managers are aware and have acknowledged defects, though they have refused to issue written determinations. Insurance has not yet been involved, but records are available. The dealer has attempted to repaid more than 4 times with no success. Warning lamps/messages? Yes. Prior to and during failures, vehicle displayed repeated “Service Electrical System,” “Low Voltage,” and communication fault codes. Cluster intermittently blacked out. Smoke in engine bay indicated immediate fire hazard. Cumulative out-of-service days exceeding 20. The failures pose unacceptable risk of fire, sudden propulsion loss, and loss of critical safety functions. I have ALL calls with GM recorded and transcribed as I am in SC (single party recording state) and can provide those.

I began driving and within 0.25 miles I received an info enter message that stated my vehicle would have reduced acceleration and to please drive safely. My engine fans became noticeably louder and ran the entire trip home (about 15 minutes). After pulling into my driveway I sat in the vehicle and listen to the fans continue to operate. Additionally, my OnStar system, WiFi, and navigation systems quit working. A P1098 Code was returned when using a diagnostic code device. Disconnecting the battery would cause the check engine light to extinguish and for the truck to operate without reduced acceleration; however, OnStar, navigation and WiFi would not work. After shutting off the engine and then restarting the check engine light would once again illuminate and the reduced acceleration message reappeared.

The plastic upper rail glass guide frame on the rear sliding window assembly of my 2023 GMC Sierra developed structural micro-cracks during normal vehicle operation. This manufacturing defect is a known issue tracked internally by the manufacturer under Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #18-NA-383.This structural failure allows severe water intrusion into the passenger cabin. The leaking water runs straight down the inside back wall of the cab, completely flooding and corroding sensitive, factory-installed electronic safety modules mounted directly beneath the leak path. This continuous water intrusion caused the catastrophic electrical failure and corrosion of the video processing control module located behind the rear seat. The sudden failure of this module completely disabled the rearview digital mirror camera and the 360-degree perimeter driver assistance cameras, creating immediate blind spots and an active driving safety hazard while operating the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected and repaired by an authorized dealership, confirming the rear window leak as the direct cause of the electronic destruction. The out-of-pocket cost to replace the water-damaged safety components was $2,747.00. Because the manufacturer refused to cover the replacement of the defective rear glass assembly, the structural leak remains unresolved. This active water intrusion continues to flood the cabin, creating a health hazard via mold growth and guaranteeing that the newly replaced safety cameras will inevitably short-circuit and fail again.

The issues with my vehicle began when the radio intermittently cut off or froze. Despite several attempts by the dealer to resolve the problem, they were unsuccessful. Early on, various electrical components failed to load or perform correctly, with the dealer attributing this to software updates. Currently, when the radio cuts off or freezes, I experience additional problems: the headlights randomly flash between dim and bright, the heads-up display fails to load or shows incomplete information, the collision detection activates with no objects around, and dynamic cruise control becomes unreliable or fails to engage. The wipers operate randomly, and the vehicle stalls when the auto start/stop feature is engaged. Random warning lights appear on the dash, and each day brings new, different issues. A new symptom involves the vehicle not recognizing the keys are inside, causing it to shut off and lock me inside. This recently happened while I was driving at low speed in a parking lot, which poses a serious safety risk. On the interstate, safety issues are more concerning: headlights flashing on and off, dynamic cruise control failing, BLIS and collision control activating unexpectedly, and the vehicle locking me inside with keys in the truck. My children are scared to ride in the vehicle due to these issues. The dealer claims they cannot replicate the problems, despite videos I’ve provided showing malfunctions. They acknowledge the issues but blame them on software updates. Multiple updates have been applied, but the problems continue and are becoming more frequent, affecting more systems. The vehicle is under warranty, but as of December 13, 2024, the dealer has refused to service it. After the dealer completed some work, an independent inspection confirmed the issues persist. Warning messages and malfunctioning lamps have been captured on video. Problem has been reported from first service approximately 6/2023 as radio malfunction / electrical issues

Thank you

At 12,018 miles on my 2024 gmc sierra 1500 I experienced a rear wheel lock up. I have 4wheel drive capability but I had the truck in rear wheel drive only. Thankfully I was not going fast at the time. I was going between 35-45 mph when experiencing the lock up. As I was going down a straight away, I experienced a rear wheel lock up of my 10L80 transmission. My tires were squealing like crazy. I pulled off onto the side of the road. After shifting to reverse and then park and then drive the problem corrected itself. When I brought it into the dealership, they could not find anything wrong with it. Additionally my trucks software was up to date and not lacking any updates. I don’t drive this truck very far and only drive about 150 miles a week. A rear wheel lock up of this magnitude at this low of miles is concerning. I’m not rough on the truck by any means. It’s more so a family vehicle than a hauler. I have got the truck serviced 3 times since I bought it for regular maintenance so that’s not an issue either. There were no warning indicators that this problem was occurring when I experienced the rear wheel lock up. This could have resulted in a collision with vehicles around me if I had not been aware of what was occurring.

It was snowy/icy conditions so the back end of my pick-up slid out to the right a little bit before the wheels unlocked and I was able to regain control. I could have slid off the road or into another vehicle had the wheels remained locked. The computer system then alerted me to a transmission issue and to reduce speed immediately and call for service. The pickup was then unable to shift out of 1st gear. The vehicle has been towed to a dealer and I have been informed the valve body in the transmission has to be replaced which is 8-12 weeks backorder.

Subject: Safety Complaint Regarding Steering Airbag Trim and Steering Axle Issues Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding serious safety issues with my GMC vehicle. Specifically: 1.The steering airbag trim has begun to crack, which raises concerns about its structural integrity and potential interference with airbag deployment in the event of a collision. 2.The steering axle is making unusual noises due to loose bolts and worn bushings, posing a potential risk to steering control and overall vehicle safety. I recently took the vehicle to an authorized GMC dealership for inspection and repair. However, the dealership refused to address these issues despite their clear impact on safety and their apparent connection to manufacturing defects. Given the critical nature of these problems, I urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly. These defects not only compromise the safety of the vehicle but also endanger the lives of the driver, passengers, and others on the road. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am happy to provide any additional information or documentation required for your investigation.

On several occasions this Saris Superclamp bike rack has dropped from an upright position to a tilted position when there is a bump/dip in the road. A driver following has later reported to me that the rack/bikes falling quickly startled him and led to him braking. The bikes have not fallen from the rack when it drops down but I am concerned about the possibility. I have contacted the manufacturer and they will send me parts to repair if I can provide the original sales slip which I can not find. The part is available for purchase for 200 which is nearly half the cost of the rack. I have communicated to the manufacturer that this defect is a safety hazard and they should rectify the issue at no cost. They have refused.

I bought a 2023 GMC Sierra Elevation pickup truck and I need towing mirrors and GM will not sell me them. They offer them if you order a truck which takes a long time. I had to buy my truck off the dealers lot because I had an accident with my previous truck. I tow a 34' long 8' wide travel trailer and feel it is a safety hazard not having towing mirrors to safely see, drive and maneuver my travel trailer driving. I don't buy any excuses that they're not available due to shortages. I talked to my dealer, GMC customer support who also transferred me to their accessory representative who wouldn't talk to me because I wasn't a dealer.

The infotainment system loses all audio through the speakers intermittently. when this happens I also lose the Safety warning chimes as well. shutting off the vehicle for an extended period of time resets something and it resumes normal function. I have contacted GM customer service and spoke to 3 different representatives and requested an escalation to a Senior Advisor, which i was told could take up to 4 days to hear back. the vehicle has 800 miles and is 1 month old, this has occurred 4 times. it has not been looked at by the manufacturer as i am waiting for return communication. Other than no sound, everything else on the touch screen seemed to be working normal, but im no technician to determine that. i feel this is a safety concern as i travel with my 13 month old daily.
